The reviews for Microsoft‘s Surface Windows 8 Pro are in, and they’re less than enthusiastic. Even in the most positive reviews, a common thread of complaints come up: Battery life is weak, critics say, and the hardware is thick and heavy compared to most tablets. When propped up like a laptop, the Surface Pro is tricky to use in cramped quarters, due to its wide stance, single angle of incline and floppy keyboard covers. My colleague Harry McCracken’s Surface Pro review sums it up: If I were shopping for an Ultrabook and my budget allowed, I’d consider it. But used with the applications I tried, Surface Pro doesn’t prove that one computing device can do everything well. Instead, it makes clear that there’s no such thing as no-compromise computing. That’s not the lesson Microsoft intended, but it’s a useful one nonetheless — for consumers, for the industry and maybe even for Microsoft. It’s easy to chalk up these reviews as evidence that Microsoft can’t pull off a single operating system for all kinds of hardware. But as someone who’s always liked the idea of Windows 8, I look at it a different way: The right hardware hasn’t arrived yet. Note that most Surface Pro reviews didn’t take umbrage with the software. The biggest problems with Surface Pro–its battery life and its bulkiness–are a result of the processor inside of it. Intel‘s Core processors aren’t meant for tablets. They’re too power hungry, so they need big batteries and fans for ventilation. A tablet can’t accommodate those needs while staying reasonably thin and light. Microsoft could have used Intel’s Clover Trail-based Atom processor instead. But while Atom chips allow for slimmer tablets and longer battery life, they’re still too underpowered to handle everything Windows 8 has to offer. Jared Newman / TIME.com So part of my hope for Windows 8 is tangled up in Intel’s product roadmap. A future version of Atom, called Bay Trail, promises more computing muscle and even slimmer devices without sacrificing battery life. Meanwhile, the next version of Intel’s laptop processors, called

Out of the entire first wave of Windows 8 hybrids that launched late last year, Acer’s Iconia W510 was the one that interested me most. With a 10.1-inch screen, it’s smaller than all the other hybrids, and more manageable when used as a tablet. When plugged into its dock, the W510 becomes a small laptop (a netbook, if you will), with a keyboard, trackpad, a full-sized USB port and extended battery life. The W510 is also a bit cheaper than some other Windows 8 hybrids, at $750 for the 64 GB version and dock, or $500 for a 32 GB tablet alone. It’s all the more heartbreaking, then, that Acer’s Iconia W510 isn’t very good. As a tablet, it feels underpowered, unable to play even some basic games like Jetpack Joyride at consistently smooth framerates. As a laptop, it’s even worse, not only because of a weak processor and meager amount of memory, but because of a glaring flaw in the dock’s trackpad, which I’ll talk about later. The W510 looks cool, at least. The tablet, while not as slim as an iPad or some Android tablets, feels so much more inviting to hold than Windows 8 tablets with 11.6-inch displays. The mechanism by which the tablet connects to the W510 keyboard dock has a clever design: The tablet slides right into the dock’s wide brace, and automatically latches on. To remove the tablet from the dock, you just slide a little latch on the front of the brace, and pull the tablet up. Although the tablet does wobble in its brace if you jiggle it, the laptop hinge is stiff enough to keep the screen upright at any angle. Jared Newman / TIME.com But that’s where the solid design ends. Both the tablet and the dock are made of cheap plastic, and the tablet itself is particularly flimsy. Hold it in both hands and flex gently, and you can watch the whole thing bend out of shape. When the tablet and dock are connected, the entire construction becomes screen-heavy, so

Walk around the PC section of a Best Buy right now, and it won’t look drastically different than it did before the launch of Windows 8. Sure, all the laptops are now running Microsoft‘s new operating system. A few of them will have touch screens, and Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga convertible will sit on an endcap. But for the most part, the store’s shelves are still lined with the same old laptop designs we’ve been seeing for years, not the new categories of laptop-tablet hybrids and convertibles that Windows 8 has ushered in. That may change over the next six to nine months, as the nation’s largest electronics chain carries more devices and creates new sections for them, according to Jason Bonfig, Best Buy’s vice president of merchant computing. I recently spoke with Bonfig about why so many interesting Windows 8 tablets and hybrids are absent from the retailer’s stores right now, and he offered a couple of key reasons. One of them is that PC makers haven’t been able to deliver their tablets and hybrids in time for Windows 8′s launch due to issues with manufacturing. Many Windows 8 tablets use touchscreens larger than 10 inches, which has been the standard for Android tablets from companies like Samsung, Asus and Acer. Production is still ramping up for the larger screens, Bonfig said, and while the manufacturing process for 10-inch panels has been refined over several years, the process for larger panels is still more likely to produce defective units. The mechanical aspect of hybrid designs is also new, Bonfig said, so manufacturers are still trying to improve quality standards there as well. “The launch date in the October timeframe for Windows 8 was very limited,” Bonfig said, “and we needed to place our bets on a handful of exclusive products.” (A couple of reports have also claimed that Intel‘s Clover Trail-based Atom chips were delayed in the lead-up to Windows 8, but Intel insists that it’s not to blame for the current bottleneck.) Supply issues aren’t the only reason for

For laptop makers, now is a time of experimentation. After years in pursuit of the same old goals — thinner, lighter, faster, cheaper — Windows 8 has provided a novel challenge: Create laptops that can transform into tablets, or vice versa. Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 13, which starts at $1,000, is just one attempt to take advantage of Microsoft’s dual-sided operating system. Out of the box, it looks like a traditional notebook, but keep tilting the 13-inch touchscreen back along its hinge, and it folds all the way around until the clamshell is closed again. Only now, the screen is face-up, and the keyboard hangs from the underbelly. You can also open the Yoga partway, keys down, so the screen is facing outward, or stand the device on both of its edges in a tent-like configuration. This approach is simple and logical enough, but after spending a week with a Lenovo Yoga review unit, I think it’s a better laptop than it is a tablet. The Yoga is clad in plastic, but it’s a soft-touch material that doesn’t feel like the cheap shells of budget laptops, and the area where you rest your palms almost has a leathery feel. Among Windows laptops, it’s the rare high-end design that doesn’t feel ripped off from Apple‘s MacBooks, yet its keyboard and trackpad are just as good. Jared Newman / TIME.com The trackpad is generously sized and covered in glass, so your fingers glide over it smoothly, and the entire surface clicks with ease. It also supports multi-touch gestures, such as two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom and the ability to simulate right-clicks by depressing the pane with both fingers. The Yoga’s keyboard is also a pleasure to type on, with island-style keys that let out a satisfying clack. One particularly nice touch is the rounded edge on the bottom of each key, which seems to leave just a bit more room for your fingers to land. The display isn’t too chintzy, either, though it does beg for the occasional swipe of a cloth as fingerprints build up.

With the arrival of Windows 8 at the end of October, I thought the weekend would be a great time to go out and play with some tablets. So on Saturday, I dragged my wife along to our nearest Best Buy and Micro Center, figuring there would be lots of new devices to try. I was wrong. The Micro Center near Cincinnati only had one Windows tablet on display, Asus’ Vivo Tab RT. It was set up at a small table near the center of the store’s main aisle, next to an Asus Zenbook laptop and an HP TouchSmart all in one. The clerk confirmed that the store had no other Windows tablets — but plenty of traditional laptops — in stock. (Strangely, he also said tablets running Windows 8, as opposed to Windows RT, wouldn’t hit the market until next year, which isn’t true.) Next stop, Best Buy, where the situation wasn’t much better. The store’s tablet and laptop section had an endcap for Lenovo’s 13-in. IdeaPad Yoga — a laptop that flips around into a tablet — but nothing else. A clerk told me that the store also had Asus’ Vivo Tab RT, but didn’t have a display for it yet, so it was locked away. He offered to find it and let me try it if I wanted. As with Micro Center, Best Buy had lots of laptops running Windows 8, but no other tablets or convertibles. On Monday, I also tried Staples, whose website said the Samsung ATIV Smart PC and Lenovo ThinkPad Twist were available in stores only. All I could find was the Twist, but it was out of stock. Just to make sure I wasn’t crazy, I consulted my list of Windows 8 tablets and hybrids from a couple weeks ago. Nine of them have ship dates of Oct. 26, including the Yoga, Vivo Tab RT and Microsoft’s Surface with Windows RT. That leaves six hybrids that should be available by now, but are difficult or impossible to find in stores: Samsung’s ATIV Smart PC

Want to do 0 to 60 in under three seconds and up to 200 miles per hour on flats? You’ve got two options: Splash yourself with a shelf’s worth of random chemicals while holding a lightning rod in a thunderstorm, or pick up a C-X75 hybrid electric supercar courtesy India-based Tata Motors’ boutique car wing, Jaguar. And you can have one, fully loaded and taxed, for the cut-rate price of $1.5 million. Stop-your-heart cheap, I know. Hey, there’s always the chemical-lightning-bath (it worked for Barry Allen and Wally West!). “The C-X75 is absolutely at the forefront of technology, it’s as good as you can get right now,” said Tata Chief Executive Officer Carl-Peter Forster at a London press conference (via Bloomberg). “For me it’s also proof that the automobile is not the technology of the last century. It has a future.” What’ll the future look like? Try that concept car shot up top. Tata trotted that out last September at a show in Paris, and says the final version will be more or less the same. In the car: two–count them two–electric motors, plus a gas-based engine with “very low carbon emissions.” It’ll let you be twice as foolish as I’ve ever been in a vehicle (if you must know, a 1987 Ford Tempo doing 100 m.p.h. on countrified blacktop at night–thank you, fate, for not throwing up any deer) and take you 31 miles (50 kilometers) on electric power alone (presumably not at top speeds). Just don’t crash, because this thing’s made out of carbon-fiber, which makes it lightweight, but–having owned both bikes and laptops made of same–like silly-putty in a high-speed smash-up. You’d best hurry if you want one, though: Jaguar says it only plans to make 250 (for a whopping $375 million in top-end spend). That, and you’ll have to wait to collect on your big-ticket purchase until they’re officially deployed, sometime late 2013.

Seeking to capture that sadly underserved market of billionaire tech-crazed environmentalists, the folks at Porsche have announced that they are taking orders for a $845,000, 500-hp plug-in hybrid. I’ll pause a moment, while you scribble out a check. Known as the 918 Spyder — a name that evokes both the glory and gruesomeness of the James-Dean-killing 550 Spyder — this modest offering from Porsche is simply the latest in its expanding line of hybrid rides. (The Panamera sedan and the Cayenne SUV both come in eco-friendly versions.) Only 918 of these 918s will be made, limiting the company’s possible gross revenue on the vehicle to a paltry $775 million or so. Cutting-edge stuff includes a carbon fiber and plastic body, electric motors on both front and rear axles, and “a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be recharged from a standard household outlet.” Should you eschew fuel entirely, you can recharge the batteries in seven hours. (Happily, Porsche is a working on a quick charge option.) So, what’s all this eco-friendliness get you, performance-wise? Well, prepare to go from zero to 60 in 3.1 seconds, and should you really, really, need to get to Whole Foods in a hurry, you can top 200-mph in full hybrid mode, and even hit 94 mph in electric only mode. Of course, at 94 mph you’ll run out of juice in about ten minutes. But no one said that saving the earth was going to be convenient.

The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show has officially drawn to a close. The biggest tech show around, CES covers over 3 million square feet of floor space and draws over 100,000 industry insiders to Las Vegas in early January every year to set the tone for what we can expect to see from the world of technology in the not-too-distant future.
Lenovo’s IdeaPad U1 Hybrid aims to offer those of us hemming and hawing between a tablet and a full-fledged laptop the best of both worlds. It looks and behaves like a standard 10.1-inch Windows notebook with the key difference being that the screen pops out of the computer’s chassis to become a standalone touchscreen Android tablet. The product has actually been in development for a while. At last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Lenovo showed off virtually the same setup except at the time, the company was in the midst of polishing its own proprietary tablet operating system. A few months later, Lenovo announced that it’d switch gears in favor of using Android on the tablet instead. At this year’s show, Lenovo had the hybrid system on display yet again but pointed out that the package is currently only available in China. A company rep wouldn’t give me specific details on a U.S. version except to hint that we’d see something similar here in the coming months, but it wouldn’t be called the same thing as the system available in China. The tablet, called “LePad” in China, can be purchased separately from the notebook portion for around the U.S. equivalent of $500. The notebook dock, which features separate processor, memory, and runs Windows 7, brings the total package price up to around the U.S. equivalent of $1300. It’s a very interesting product and worked impressively well during the brief period of time I spent with it here at the show. It’s still a little expensive and clunky overall, but the idea represents a good first step in what we may expect to see from more and more manufacturers in the future—thin and light laptops that feature a standard operating system, processor and keyboard for getting work done, and double as tablets for more recreational tasks.

This thing is crazy, and maybe in a good way. At Intel’s developers conference today, Dell showed off what appeared to be a netbook at first glance. Then the guy holding it apparently swiveled the 10-inch touchscreen around 180 degrees inside its own frame, closed the computer as one would do with a standard notebook, and then—boom—it’s a tablet. So basically when the screen is facing the “outside” of the computer, it’s a tablet. Swivel the screen back around while exposing the keyboard and it’s a computer. The machine will apparently run Windows 7 atop a dual-core Intel processor and be available “later this year” according to UMPC Portal. This may very well be a good look at where tablets and notebooks are heading. While this particular configuration reportedly runs Windows 7 in both netbook and tablet modes, we’ll likely see similar devices that may run a more power- and finger-friendly operating system while in tablet mode (Android, webOS, Chrome OS, etc.) and then leverage a full operating system when in notebook mode. Lenovo is on the right path with its IdeaPad U1, though it’s unclear if the machine will ever see the light of day. Eventually, of course, the hardware will be able to support full operating systems without any of the tradeoffs associated with the upcoming crop of Windows-based slates and tablets (battery life, mostly). It appears that Dell is taking an early run at that ideal with the introduction of this hybrid machine.
