Pity the poor iMac. In an ecosystem that boasts iPad 2s, MacBook Airs and iPhone 4s, Apple’s all-in-one desktop stalwart looks like the old stand-by. It’s had a few design changes over the years, going from a plastic enclosure to aluminum and getting that glossy edge-to-edge glass display, but it’s never been quite as sexy [...]
And all at once, the sound of an infinite number of ripped pants pockets could be heard around the world as Apple fans removed their wallets with total disregard for the square-shaped denim enclosures that had held them safely in place. Those poor brass rivets never even saw it coming.
Apple filed a patent back in January outlining an all-in-one iMac that would function as a standard mouse-and-keyboard computer when the screen was positioned at an upright angle and, when tilted toward the user, would turn into a touchscreen computer running in “a low-resolution input mode, such as a touch-based interface.”
Apple intends to remind us all today that it still makes computers. Remember Apple computers? They’re like the iPhone but much, much bigger and faster.
