Playing music in multiple rooms around the house can be an expensive endeavor, with products like Sonos costing upwards of $300 per speaker. If you’ve already got a handful of phones, tablets and laptops connected to existing speakers around the house, why not sync them together so they’re all playing the same songs at the same time? Speakerfy, an app that officially launches on iPhone and iPad this week, and on Windows and Android next week, is a quick and dirty way to make it happen. It allows you to synchronize audio playback on multiple phones, tablets and laptops, so you can listen to the same music while wandering from room to room. (Whole-home audio isn’t Speakerfy’s primary intended function. It’s actually billed as a “social sound” app, allowing people to listen to music together across devices. Yes, it’s an app for silent discos. No, I’m not hip enough to partake in said discos. Whole-home audio it is.) Speakerfy streams audio over your local Wi-Fi network, or over a shared mobile hotspot, to any device that’s also running the app. Just send an invite to the devices you want to connect, then choose a song, album or playlist from your music collection. The other devices will start playing music in time with the host device. Right now, Speakerfy isn’t perfect. Every time you play a new song, there’s a delay of a few seconds as the devices get in sync, and once playback begins, the receiving devices stutter for a moment while the audio falls in line. John Wright, Speakerfy’s president, told me that the company’s working on the issue. The app itself is also aesthetically rough around the edges, and it’s prone to strange behavior. When I first tried the app, my iPhone and iPad failed to get in sync, and a message told me to force-close and restart the app. I had to do that again later on, when I’d left both devices idle for a while. Jared Newman / TIME.com Finally, there’s one major limitation to Speakerfy: It

There's too much other stuff to do, and I can't sit still through an entire movie or TV show without succumbing to the tablet's many other distractions.
The rumors were true, and it’s finally here: a native Gmail app for your Apple device. You’ll get push notifications, inbox searching, autocompleting e-mail addresses, photo uploads and—if you’re an iPad user—a split view with your inbox on the left and your messages on the right. You’ll also have access to Gmail’s “Priority Inbox” features, message starring, labeling, and spam reporting. The app is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, provided you’ve got iOS version 4 or above—which should be just about everyone by now. It’s available in the App Store here… UPDATE (2:22pm): And just like that, she’s gone. Google has updated its blog post with the following: “Earlier today we launched a new Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app. We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it.” Here’s the offending error message, too: Introducing the Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch [Google]

A year and a half after Apple launched the iPad, Facebook has launched an official iPad app. Um, whoopie? While it’s nice to see Facebook finally take part in the biggest personal computing phenomenon since the laptop, Facebook’s iPad app has left me feeling cold. For one thing, it’s barely distinguishable from unofficial Facebook apps like MyPad and Friendly. (One exception: It links to iPad versions of any Facebook-powered apps you use, such as Zynga Poker.) More importantly, the lack of integration throughout iOS is a big letdown in light of what other platforms have done with Facebook, and what Apple has done with Twitter. (MORE: 10 Things You Shouldn’t Do On Facebook) Twitter is a big part of iOS 5, so users can tweet directly from built-in apps such as Safari, Photos and YouTube. Third-party apps will be able to tap these abilities as well, essentially letting you tweet from anywhere. No such functionality exists on iOS devices for Facebook. Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, meanwhile, has full Facebook integration. It can show Facebook messages alongside incoming text messages. It can show new Facebook photos right on the home screen. You can easily share and tag photos in Facebook directly in the camera app. I’m sure these capabilities will extend to Windows 8 tablets next year. Android also has some Facebook integration thanks to the way the operating system lets apps share information. Whenever you see the “Share” button in an Android app—for example, in the camera, the web browser or some social networks—there’s a good chance you’ll be able to post that photo, link or status update to Facebook. Even HP’s fallen TouchPad has a touch of Facebook integration, showing photos from the social network inside the main Photos app, and letting users populate their contacts and calendars with Facebook data. (Mashable recently reported that Facebook’s TouchPad app infuriated Apple and further sullied relations between the two companies.) Compared to all these advancements, Facebook’s iPad app is like a lonely island, unable to communicate with the outside world of iOS.

Who can forget where they were on September 11th? In a few weeks from now, it will be the event’s 10th anniversary, and there will be an exclusive iPad app to commemorate it. The upcoming “9/11 Memorial: Past, Present and Future” app will be filled with photographs and videos detailing the event, and the creation of the World Trade Center Memorial and 9/11 museum. The app will be available September 1st and free from September 1st to the 12th, but after that it will cost you $9.95. It is all courtesy of producer Steve Rosenbaum, who also directed a documentary about the tragic event. (PHOTOS: Remembering 9/11: The Evolution of Ground Zero) While it may have been a controversial decision to make it iPad-only (say, not on Android), I’ve got to wonder what the whole point was of making the app altogether—and selling it? I suppose it’s not a stretch, given that Hollywood makes films over wars long past. But when only 1,629 out of nearly 2,800 victims have been identified nearly 10 years later, it’s a hard pill to swallow. MORE: The Interrupted Reading: The Kids with George W.
And so it begins. Let’s jump in the Wayback Machine and set our coordinates for June 11, 2007. Apple had just announced something called the “iPhone” and with it, an “innovative new way to create applications” for the device. The premise was simple: In lieu of an actual app store, Apple urged developers to “create Web 2.0 applications which look and behave just like the applications built into iPhone”—it was just called “iPhone” back then, not “the iPhone.” Basically, if you wanted to make an app, you built it on the web. (MORE: Adobe Helps Turn Flash into HTML5, Targets Apple Devices) About a year later, the actual App Store was launched and developers could build applications that lived on the phone itself instead of on the web. Web-based apps hadn’t been quite as slick as promised, and having a central repository like the App Store gave Apple a little more control over which apps ran on the iPhone and, more importantly, a 30% cut of any app sold. Fast forward to the current day and Apple has a bit of a problem on its hands. As it turns out, certain web-based apps can actually perform well enough that app makers don’t need to build them for Apple’s App Store any more. And app makers that sell content from inside their apps don’t want to play by Apple’s new-ish rules stating that each piece of content sold within an app commands a 30% cut to Apple—and linking to an outside website to sell content from within the apps is a no-no. (MORE: Apple Tightens App Store Rules on In-App Purchases) Let’s say you’re Amazon and you’ve been selling e-books for the past couple years at around $10 a pop. That’s your pricing model. And all of a sudden, the books you sell on the apps that you’ve developed for some of the most popular mobile devices around—iPhone and iPad—will now see a 30% cut go right to Apple. That’s not going to work for you, especially considering that Apple sells

Barely making the announced August deadline, BBC Worldwide has finally launched its “Global iPlayer” iPad app—but only for those in western Europe, reports paidContent. Originally announced in November last year, the Global iPlayer brings what is being called “editorially curated” content from multiple British broadcasters and producers to an international audience, with many shows being made available digitally (legally) for the first time. (MORE: Global iPlayer to Offer BBC, British Video-On-Demand Internationally) The service is launching first in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, with programming available for a €6.99—around $10 U.S.—for a monthly subscription; annual subscriptions of €49.99, or $71.50 U.S., are also available. No U.S. launch date has been announced for the service, although as recently as March, BBC Director General Mark Thompson was talking in terms of dollar cost for American subscribers. With the size of the U.S. market, success in the U.S. of shows like Doctor Who and Downton Abbey, and the creation in recent years of an American production arm of BBC Worldwide, it’s only got to be a matter of time. Personally, I can’t wait. MORE: BBC’s Global iPlayer to Cost Less Than $10 A Month, Offer Uncut British Shows Graeme McMillan is a reporter at TIME.
During my first year out of college, I worked as a technical writer for a small medical insurance company out in Orange County. We were required to work carefully with doctors to put together comprehensive reports for patients, making sense out of other doctors’ notes and fact checking them against medical handbooks. Of course, it’s no secret that doctors—like lots of people—have horrible, often indecipherable handwriting. Not only is it dangerous, but lots of needless time was wasted placing phone calls to the doctors themselves to figure out what a particular piece of chicken scratch actually said. Once in a while, those patient packets happened to be as thick as phonebooks, too. (MORE: Why I Want The Watson Computer to (Help) Take Care of My Baby) Which is just one reason I’m behind this iPad app, DrChrono. Its goal is to digitize patient information as electronic health records (EHR) and modernize a highly inefficient system for keeping charts. The company just announced that it’s closed $675,000 in second round funding. According to TechCrunch, one out of every five doctors with a private practice already own an iPad. As tablets continue to proliferate, that number is likely to grow accordingly. The advantages of using a tablet to store information almost go without saying: Illegibility becomes a non-issue, for starters, and data can be accessed from anywhere. The app itself contains many sensible additives, like medical speech to text, paperless billing, customized clinical note forms, photos and videos (incredibly useful), and even a feature called eRx ePrescribing, which helps doctors send error free prescriptions to any pharmacy in the U.S. The company is also investing in a team of security experts to make sure the EMRs are secure and HIPAA compliant. “Our goal is for physicians to be able to treat patients and manage their medical practice without getting distracted by complicated computer software”, says Daniel Kivatinos, cofounder and COO of DrChrono.
My iPad is bursting at the seams with wonderful applications. If I had to pick just one of them as the romantic ideal of what a tablet app can and should be, it would be Flipboard. This “social magazine”–which brings together stuff from Facebook, Twitter, and the entire Web into a wonderfully browsable package–simply couldn’t have existed in the pre-iPad era. And its user interface is a thing of wonder: an amazingly polished, fun experience that both feels like a magazine and like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s not just the best one I’ve seen on an iPad app; it’s one of the best ones I’ve seen on anything. (MORE: Flipboard iPad App Makes a Magazine from Twitter, Facebook) Can you tell that I kind of like this program? Well, now I like it even more. The company just rolled out an update, and cofounder Mike McCue briefed me on it last week and gave me the chance to spend a couple of days with it before it hit the App Store. Flipboard hasn’t changed radically, but there are a bunch of improvements that make it even more….well, Flipboardy. Until now, the only way to read a feed within Flipboard was to add it as a section–a requirement akin to forcing you to subscribe to a magazine without having the chance to flip through it at the newsstand. The new version revamps the browser you use to find sources, giving you commitment-free access to all of its sources. You can still add your favorites as sections, but you can also peruse stuff willy-nilly if you choose. You can now connect your Linked In account to Flipboard, creating a section of stories recommended by your business connections there. Stories from Flipboard partners such as All Things Digital, The New Yorker, and National Geographic–which are displayed in customized formats that look particularly magazine-like–are more artfully woven into the interface. (You used to have to tap your way through an intermediary page that showed articles in shrunken form; now you go straight

Opera’s littlest web browser, Opera Mini, just got a big update for iOS, with optimization for the iPad. This free browser underdog provides a great experience on Apple’s tablet, but it has too many frustrations to fully replace the iPad’s default Safari browser. There’s a lot to like about Opera Mini on the iPad. The browser’s signature “speed dial” — a customizable grid of your favorite websites — looks quite inviting on the big screen, and tabs are handled through a drop-down box, which is faster to use than the clunky tab window in iPad Safari. Webpages scroll and zoom with ease, and using the forward and back buttons creates a slick-looking swipe effect across the screen. There’s also a share button for quick linking on Facebook and Twitter. The hallmark feature of Opera Mini is server-side compression, which squishes web pages by about 90 percent. This cuts down on data use and loads pages faster when there’s not a lot of bandwidth to go around. In other words, it’s a handy browser when you’ve got a slow internet connection. But on the iPad, Opera Mini’s zeal for speed is also its greatest weakness. In addition to compressing pages, Opera Mini loads the mobile versions of websites when available. As a result, you get feature-limited versions of Google Search, Gmail, Bing and countless other sites that are optimized for weak feature phones. That may fly on an iPhone, but on the iPad, it just looks silly. I’ve got other nitpicks as well: Speed Dial is limited to nine slots when the iPad’s large screen should afford more; there are no suggested searches, like the kind offered on Safari and other alternative iPad browsers; and there’s no print utility, if you’re into that sort of thing. But basically, I’m pining for an iPad version of Opera Mobile, the big brother to Opera Mini that’s already available on Android phones and tablets. This may not be possible, because Opera Mobile renders webpages in ways that Apple does not allow for third-party developers,

This post originally appeared on Technologizer. In the past, I’ve said some nasty things about the WordPress iPad app. For the tasks I needed to do here and on other blogs — add and resize images, format text and link like crazy — the app’s barebones approach was simply inadequate. The app was also pretty buggy. WordPress released a big update to the app for all iOS devices. Most of the bugs are apparently gone, and there are some new features, including a quick photo button for camera-equipped devices, access to stats and support for 10 new languages. Unfortunately, WordPress’ latest app update is still missing major features that no blogging tool should be without. That means I can’t use it for anything but rough drafts. It’s inconceivable to me that a blogging tool would lack the ability to create links, but there’s still no easy way to do it in WordPress. Oddly enough, WordPress offers to make a link if you start typing out the HTML tag, but if it’s so easy to drop in the code, why isn’t there a link button specifically for that purpose? For that matter, the WordPress app offers none of the HTML buttons that you find on the proper website. There are no lists, block quotes, italics, page breaks or strikethroughs, and the lack of spell check is particularly dangerous given the difficulties of using a virtual keyboard. I’d stick with the WordPress website, but it’s too crash-prone to rely on, and it’s not formatted for the iPad. The last time I wrote this rant, a helpful commenter pointed out BlogPress as an alternative. Indeed, it’s miles ahead of the official WordPress app, complete with HTML tags and the ability to resize images while maintaining proportions, but it has drawbacks of its own. You can’t, for instance, preview exactly how a blog post will look on the web, and I can never get images to nest perfectly in an upper corner as they do in many of our blogs here. There’s no spell
