Dead Space for iOS Publisher: Electronic Arts Developer: IronMonkey Studios Systems it’s available on: iPhone, iPad System reviewed on: iPhone 3GS Whoever is out there saying that iPhone and iPad games will never be as good needs to download Dead Space for iOS. Not only does it show off the graphics, sound and touch screen capabilities of the iOS devices, at $7 it’s much cheaper than buying a traditional game for a handheld gaming device. Dead Space for iOS is a completely new adventure in the franchise where you follow an engineer named Vandal as he’s guided by someone as he tries to escape from an underground facility. It brings back the saw gun, kinesis and plasma cutter that fans loved from the console versions of the game, but because you’re playing on a touch screen surface it gives new toys for players to tinker with whether you are new games or not. With three modes to try out, even though the whole game doesn’t take that long to go through (it’s 12 short chapters and about five hours of gameplay), there’s some replay value especially since you gain new weapons as you progress and can use them upon replay. I have to admit even I was skeptical that I would get smooth gameplay on my iPhone 3GS because my phone takes forever to download new emails or load Google maps. However, for the hours that I played the game, it did not crash even once and used relatively little of my already depleted battery. I was pleased to find that by pausing the game you could do a quick battery check, instead of having to press the home button and then go back into the game. Controls on how to move did take me a few minutes to get used to – I kept zooming in instead of running in the beginning because of how sensitive the touch screen was – and I did wish that there was some sort of calibration function or at least some option to change how I viewed the game

Dead Space made a name for itself on the consoles in 2008. The title was named one of the top games of the year by numerous publications including Game Informer and Game Spot. With a new sequel set to be released tomorrow in the United States, publisher EA Games and developer Visceral Games have high hopes for the franchise. But, they’re not just content with expanding the title’s offerings on the console. In addition to Dead Space 2, the companies have also created a Dead Space for iOS game to also be released tomorrow, capable of play on the iPhone and iPad. This move from console to mobile gaming is certainly not a new one for video game titles, but it is an option that is growing increasingly popular for many game developers as they see the iPhone and iPad growing in prevalence as a handheld gaming device. “Your phone is something you carry with you everywhere,” lead designer of Dead Space for iOS Jarrad Trudgen said to Techland. “It’s just getting harder to justify carrying two pieces of equipment.” As a fan of Dead Space, Trudgen said he was excited about adapting the horror, third-person shooter title for mobile gaming. Wanting to do the franchise justice, he was nervous especially because the team decided that they wanted to bring the horror experience to the iOS platform, something they believed hadn’t been successfully done before. It was one of the major challenges they faced: trying to appeal to hardcore gamers who want the console style experience while trying to adapt the capabilities of the touchscreen. Trudget said a lot of the problems resided in making the controls feel right, especially for someone who was used to playing the game with a traditional controller. “The controls are really precise in terms of aiming,” he explained about the iOS game. “You have to carefully aim and chop the limbs of the enemies you are fighting.” “It is an area of the platform that does receive criticism especially from hardcore gamers,” Trudget added. ”What I think the problem is

Just in time for Christmas, when you’re going to be stuck in that car for the long car ride to your grandma’s house, we’re bringing you some tips to make playing Infinity Blade on your iPod a little easier. Combo King You can also mix any of these moves starting with Right/Down/Up and changing the relative direction in the pattern and learn how to do a 5-hit combo! - Left, Right, Left = Huge Hit: Does the most damage you can in a three hit window - Left, Left, Right, Right = Mega Hit: Does the most damage you can in a four hit window - Left, Right, Up, Down, Left = Ultra Hit: Best, this does the most damage you can in a five or greater hit window (More on TIME.com: “Infinity Blade” to Get Free Content Update, New Enemy) Shield Your Gaze Use your shield wisely. Block with shield, slide off of shield to swipe – no need to lift your finger. Save your shield for the end of the fight when your health is low since it is the easiest to use. Be careful: Some boss attacks can get past the shield so know which ones are effective and dodge them. Try using block and dodge to defend the first few attacks of an enemy combo to get in more scratch hits between enemy moves. After the third or fourth enemy attack, try parrying to score the larger damage window at the end of the combo, especially if you get a stab or sword clash opportunity. Clash of the Titans When fighting the 15-foot Titans (like the Feral Troll), pay attention to which side he smashes his weapon on the ground. If he smashes on the right side, dodge to the right shortly afterward. If he smashes on the left side do the same on the left. It’s a good indicator of which way to dodge. Also, pay attention to the Titan’s info. For example, if he is immune to fire, be sure to equip an Ice Sword, Ice Ring and a Fire

How do you take a highly successful multiplayer video game and turn it into a mobile game? The folks at Harmonix figured it out. Rock Band, which has sold over 4 million copies and made upwards of $600 million in revenue, has turned it into one of the top rated and downloaded games in the App Store. Now they’re trying to do it again with Rock Band Reloaded, an updated version of the game which includes all-new songs and several new features. “Reloaded is basically a new game,” Rock Band Reloaded producer Olivier Proulx explained. “We reviewed all the app store feedback, and people made interesting suggestions.” “We’re a little biased of course, but I think we have the highest production value of all the apps in the app store,” product manager Autumn Brown added. “We view Rock Band as a great music experience, it’s a social game. You can really do that with these new devices.” Converting the functionalities of a large video game with many different controllers into a pocket-sized mechanism was not an easy task, but Brown admits they had an advantage in the fact that they could use the brand name of the product. People were already familiar with the title, so getting licensed songs was quite easy since all of the music used also appears in the console version of Rock Band. Besides horizontal game play and full 3D graphics in the mobile game, the vocal function that had been turned into a silent beat driven mode in the first mobile game could actually be used. Gameplay with friends with iPads and iPhones is also encouraged. ”We’ve had a lot of interesting sessions I was recommended not to be the singer,” Proulx said laughing. One of the biggest challenges was taking the game and making it fit the vast options that are afforded to people on the iPad. Proulx added that EA, the game’s publisher, really pushed developers to adapt the game for the platform. Whereas on the console version you had actual drums and a plastic guitar to jam on,

Most of us have had delusions of grandeur where we were in a world-famous rock band, jamming on stage with our closest friends. The truth is, most of us lack the talent to pick up the guitar or drums, or even open our mouths and exercise our vocal chords. The Rock Band video game series has at least let us pretend that we had some skill (and we could work on improving in the comfort of our own homes). But now the new iPhone version of Rock Band lets users take the game on the go. (More on TIME.com: Rock Band 3 Review: You Might Accidentally Learn an Instrument) Rock Band Reloaded is the revamped version of that game for iPad and iPhone, allowing more multiplayer aspects and corrects some of the gaming console glitches that seemed to always shut down the song when you were most in the groove. In addition to the upgraded graphics and ability to brag about your scores to your friends more easily, you can actually play the vocal part this time, singing into your device instead of using the track pad tapping option. (Although that option is still available if you don’t want to bother those riding on the subway with you with your nasal voice.) Gameplay is now horizontal instead of vertical, so you don’t have to squeeze your fingers into impossible positions to hit all those notes. Plus with an additional expert mode, there’s tons more to master. It’s Harmonix’s highest production value to date: With the characters moving to the music, it almost seems like you’re playing the console game… on a much smaller screen. The iPad version allows a dueling banjo mode where you literally face off with a friend on either side of an iPad on the same song. You can also play on the same team however on the same device and connect with other iPhones and iPads that may want to join your virtual band. But, don’t fret if all the changes won’t make you loose all those hours of
