While we’d certainly like to see an iPad Mini with a Retina display this year, months of rumors have produced no compelling evidence that it’s going to happen. If anything, we’re less certain about the prospect than ever in light of several conflicting reports. Thanks for nothing, rumor mill! The latest scuttlebutt is a puzzler, courtesy of Richard Shim at NPD DisplaySearch (via CNet and Business Insider). Shim says Apple is on track to ship an iPad Mini with a Retina display this fall, but with the same A5 processor as the current model. A more powerful version, he said, will follow in the first quarter of 2014. Unless Apple has pulled off some miraculous engineering, in which a two year-old processor can power quadruple the pixels at no apparent cost to overall performance, NPD’s story doesn’t add up. At a resolution of 2048-by-1536, a Retina-display iPad Mini would have four times as many pixels as the non-Retina model. It takes more power to handle all those pixels, which is why Apple introduced the A5x chip in the third-generation iPad last year. Speaking to Business Insider, Shim had no explanation for why Apple might use an A5 chip instead, or how that would even work. At this point, I’d usually turn to other rumors to figure out some sort of consensus — an Apple tea leaf triangulation, if you will — but consensus on the next iPad Mini is hard to find. Here’s a sampling of other recent rumors with conflicting information: In December, Chinese website Zol.com.cn said a Retina iPad Mini would soon begin mass production, with an A6X processor. Contradicting that report, Chinese-language site, MyDrivers.com, claimed that small-scale production had begun on a Retina iPad Mini 2, but with an A5X processor. In March, Chinese website CNYes said the Retina-equipped Mini was on track to launch in the fall, with no word on processing power. iMore, a fairly reliable Apple rumor source, claimed that the next iPads could debut “as soon as April.” Didn’t happen. The site cautioned that a Retina

I am a very big fan of books. Over the years I have collected a library of close to 2,500 books of all kinds, with 300-plus dedicated to cooking and 200-plus focused on travel. I even have some first editions of Hemingway and Steinbeck favorites. And for decades, books were my travel companions on my many trips to Europe and Asia. In this regard, I am old school. I love the feel of the book and the tactile feel of turning a page. I can spend hours in an old used bookstore seeking out gems for my collection. I even enjoy the musty smell of these bookstores that house thousands of old books. And for many years, I would curl up by my fireplace in the living room and read for hours as I cradle a book in my hands. I pored over its text, and let my imagination run wild as I read the adventures of travel writer Paul Theroux. I read dozens of books on food literature and drooled as I tried to imagine the eating experiences being recorded by M.F.K. Fisher or, my favorite, Calvin Trillin in his Tummy Trilogy. Yet, when electronic books first came out, I embraced them wholeheartedly. In fact, I was one of the first to buy Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader the second it was available. And since then I have owned at least six or seven dedicated e-book readers and use the book apps on my iPad or Kindle Fire HD tablets all the time. Now I admit that when I first started reading books on an e-reader, I felt very guilty about turning my back on my physical books. But once I realized that the words on the pages of my hardcovers were the exact, same words on my e-reader, it made my move to e-books very easy. Interestingly, the main reason for my fast embracement of e-books was mostly related to travel. For 25 years, I would have to carry onto a plane a separate book bag along with my

With the iPad Mini, Apple has decided to enter the cheap tablet fray–sort of. Apple’s smaller, lighter iPad costs $329 and up, quite a bit more than Google’s Nexus 7, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and Barnes & Noble’s Nook HD, all of which start at $200. Still, it’s clearly aimed at sapping some customers from the realm of inexpensive tablets, so a comparison is in order. Here’s a look at what each budget tablet has to offer compared to the rest: Apple’s iPad Mini Pros: A 7.9-inch display doesn’t sound like much over other 7-inch tablets, but because the iPad Mini’s aspect ratio is 4:3, compared to 16:9 or 16:10 on other tablets, it’s a lot wider in portrait mode and taller in landscape. Yet it’s also thinner and lighter than the other tablets available, and it has both front- and rear-facing cameras. The main advantage, though, is in the software. No other app store comes close to Apple’s selection of 275,000 tablet-optimized apps, and Apple’s iOS operating system is as smooth and stable as it gets. Cons: The price could be a dealbreaker, especially if you want more than 16 GB of storage. Apple charges $429 for a 32 GB iPad Mini, and $529 for a 64 GB one. And 4G LTE models are available, but they’re also pricey, adding $130 to the total cost. (See Also: Pricing Guide: iPad Mini, iPad 2 and iPad with Retina Display) Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD Pros: Out of all the $200 tablets, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD has the largest selection of movies, shows, music and books, and if you have an Amazon Prime subscription ($79 per year), you get a selection of streaming videos and e-book rentals at at no extra charge. Amazon is further ahead than its competitors on support for connected TV devices, so you can start watching a video on the tablet and resume it on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Roku and lots of other set-top boxes. It also includes a useful children’s mode called FreeTime, which lets parents

With Apple‘s recent unveiling of the iPad Mini and the fourth-generation iPad with Retina display, the company now sells 14 different versions of the iPad. Prices range from $329 to $829 and include three base models: the 7.9-inch iPad Mini, the 9.7-inch iPad 2 and the 9.7-inch iPad with Retina display (the iPad 2 is the oldest of the bunch). Apple’s basic pricing formula for iPads is as follows: Each model begins with 16 gigabytes of storage and a Wi-Fi connection. Doubling the storage adds an extra $100 to the price. Adding a 3G or 4G LTE connection adds an extra $130 to the price. Which model of iPad is “best” depends on your needs, but here are a few stats: The iPad Mini and iPad 2 both sport a dual-core A5 processor and a 1024×768-resolution screen. BUT! The iPad Mini features better front- and rear-facing cameras than the iPad 2 and the cellular models feature faster connections than the iPad 2. Also, the same amount of pixels on a 7.9-inch screen versus a 9.7-inch screen will look better on the smaller screen. The iPad 2 cellular model features a slower 3G connection from either AT&T or Verizon, while the cellular models of the iPad Mini and iPad with Retina display feature faster 4G LTE connections from AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. Performance-wise, the iPad with Retina display could be considered the “best” since it has the newest processor: Apple’s dual-core A6X with quad-core graphics. The 2048×1536-resolution screen is also better than the screens on the iPad Mini and iPad 2. The iPad 2 is technologically the least advanced of all the available iPad models. It’s slightly lighter and thinner than the newer iPad with Retina display, however. Unsurprisingly, the iPad Mini is the most portable of the bunch. It measures 7.87 inches long by 5.3 inches wide by 0.28 inches thick and weighs just shy of 0.7 pounds. Apple claims that all three models will get the same battery life: up to 10 hours when using the Wi-Fi connections or

With the $329 iPad Mini, Apple is betting that slim design, a larger screen and a bigger app selection can lure people away from other small tablets. The iPad Mini has a 7.9-inch, 1024-by-768 resolution display. Although it’s smaller than the 9.7-inch display on current iPads, it has the same 1024-by-768 resolution as Apple’s first- and second-generation tablets. That means it’s wider than competing 7-inch tablets, and it can run all the same apps as current iPads. The app compatibility is important, considering that tablet-optimized apps are the iPad’s greatest strength over competing tablets. During a press event, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the iTunes App Store now has more than 275,000 iPad apps that have been optimized for the larger display. The iPad Mini looks a lot like the leaked cases and product renders that have been popping up for the last few months. It’s 7.2 mm thick, making it 23 percent thinner than the larger iPad, and it’s 53 percent lighter, at 0.68 pounds. (Apple says the iPad Mini is as thin as a pencil and as light as a pad of paper.) Other specs include an A5 processor, HD front-facing camera, a 5-megapixel rear camera and optional 4G LTE connectivity. The iPad Mini gets 10 hours of battery life, and uses the same Lightning connector found in the iPhone 5. Prices for the iPad Mini start at $329 with 16 GB of storage and Wi-Fi; 32 GB and 64 GB models are available for $429 and $529, respectively, and 4G LTE costs an additional $130. It’ll be available in black or white, and has its own optional Smart Covers, similar to those of the larger iPad. The price leaves a bit of breathing room for $200 tablets such as Google’s Nexus 7, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and Barnes & Noble’s Nook HD. Pre-orders for the iPad Mini begin on Friday. The Wi-Fi version goes on sale November 2, and the 4G LTE version will arrive two weeks later in the U.S. and several other countries.
