By now, it’s clear that anyone who thought tablets were a fad is dead wrong. According to IDC, tablet makers shipped 49.2 million units during the first quarter of 2013, for an increase of 142 percent over the same period a year ago. PC sales, meanwhile, are down to 76.3 million units shipped. At this rate, it’s safe to assume tablets will overtake PCs by the end of the year. IDC’s figures aren’t gospel, because for the most part they aren’t based on official numbers from hardware vendors. But as a general sense of what’s going on, they provide us with a few interesting takeaways: Apple Isn’t In Tablet Trouble Percentage-wise, Apple’s tablet shipments aren’t growing as quickly as the competition. Samsung, for instance, enjoyed 283 percent year-over-year growth. Asus’ shipments went up by 350 percent, while Amazon’s shipments went up by 157 percent. Apple’s growth? A mere 65 percent. The difference led CNet to wonder whether Apple is “losing its edge” to other tablet makers. No, it’s not. For one thing, the numbers for Apple represent sales to end users, rather than shipments, so it’s possible that the company has shipped many more units than IDC’s figures let on. Even if we ignore that discrepancy, iPad “shipments” increased by 7.7 million, compared to 10.6 million for the next four tablet makers combined. And most of those companies only boosted their market share by sacrificing profits and selling tablets for dirt-cheap–something Apple hasn’t done to nearly the same extent. Other tablet makers are addressing a part of the market that Apple hasn’t, but that doesn’t mean they’re eating Apple’s lunch. Amazon Isn’t Destroying Android Just like last year, Amazon’s tablet shipments dropped off big time after the holidays, with just 1.8 million Kindle Fires shipped, compared to 6 million in Q4 2012, but it’s not as bad as it looks. Shipments don’t equal sales to end-users, and as NPD analyst Stephen Baker pointed out a year ago, Amazon tends to ship lots of units during the holidays, and then sell them

The odds are looking good that Apple will ditch the textured, bubbly look of its iOS software in favor of something more modern. Citing “multiple people who have either seen or have been briefed” on iOS 7, 9to5Mac reports that the software for iPhones and iPads will sport a flatter look: The new interface is said to be ‘very, very flat,’ according to one source. Another person said that the interface loses all signs of gloss, shine, and skeuomorphism seen across current and past versions of iOS. Another source framed the new OS as having a level of ‘flatness’ approaching recent releases of Microsoft’s Windows Phone ‘Metro’ [user interface]. We’ve heard a similar story before. Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Jonathan Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, was pushing for a flatter look across iOS. A few questions come to mind: Given that both Windows Phone and Android have pushed toward modern software aesthetics, this seems like a rare instance where Apple is following the pack. Can Apple flatten out iOS in a way that seems fresh and original? How big of a shift will this be for users? Will user-interface elements work differently or is this strictly an aesthetic change? To what extent will the changes affect third-party apps, and how much work will they have to do to flatten out their own software? We’ll likely find out on June 10, when Apple kicks off its Worldwide Developers Conference. The company is promising an “in-depth look at what’s next in iOS and OS X” during the event.

It’s been a plausible-sounding rumor for a while. And now it’s reality: Google Now, Google’s voice-controlled assistant, is available for Apple’s iOS. To be specific, it’s launching today as a new feature in the Google Search app for iPhone and iPad, giving users of Apple gadgets a feature which has been unique to Android phones until now. (I was going to say that Now is “finally” arriving on iOS, but it actually didn’t take all that long — the feature debuted only 10 months ago, when Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was announced. It’s just that it’s so clever and useful that it quickly felt like a fundamental Android feature.) Google If you were going to lump Google Now into a category of mobile apps, you’d categorize it with Apple’s own Siri. The emphasis of the two apps is quite different, though. Google Now, like Siri, lets you do stuff by talking to it. But its distinguishing characteristic are its cards — tidy little summaries which show up based on cues such as your location and past actions rather than waiting until you’ve explicitly asked for them to appear. They can tell you about the weather, local attractions, news and sports, travel stuff like flights and hotels and more. I don’t know if I’d call it the best version of Google, but it’s probably the one that most closely tells us where Google thinks it’ll be going over the next few years. I haven’t used the new iOS Google Search yet. (The current version has vaguely Google Now-like aspects without actually being Google Now.) I’m curious about how close it can come to replicating the Android version of Now when it’s part of an app on an operating system that Google doesn’t control. It also won’t be able to do some things which Siri, with its direct integration into the operating system, can do, such as popping up with a press of the Home button and letting you set alarms. But if Google Now retains a decent percentage of its appeal

There’s no question about it: the perils are deep and wide for companies whose primary business is making PCs. There are many layers to the problem and unfortunately, the perfect storm hit the PC sector and there will be collateral damage. The PC Is Only Mostly Dead It would be silly to argue that the PC is dead. Desktops and portable desktops (a.k.a. notebooks) will remain in the marketplace. The PC is not going away. However, something which has been critical for PC manufacturers to thrive is going away: value. The bottom line is that PCs have lost their value to the mass market. Even if the iPad had not been invented, I still believe the PC market would be in the same position it’s in today. Granted, the decline may not have been as steep, but I am convinced that growth would still be flat to slightly negative. In the minds of consumers, PCs have become like cars. People hold on to their PCs as long as possible and resist upgrading because they feel no pressing need. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they will never upgrade, just that they will wait as long as possible. This is the key point I want to get across because the lagging refresh cycles, which are now the norm, demonstrate that value has left the traditional PC segment. Is It Windows 8′s Fault? Many are blaming Windows 8, but I do not believe Microsoft‘s latest operating system is the problem. However, it’s also not the solution. I believe in the premise of Windows 8 and its concept of merging mobility and touch-based user interfaces with powerful desktop computing. That being said, Windows 8 is a transition OS for Microsoft as the company truly looks to unify platforms. My guess is that unity will come with Windows 9; we will have to wait and see whether Microsoft has the answer that it and its partners desperately need. iPad Is the Culprit Realistically, the netbook is the real culprit. The netbook showed many consumers that

Release dates for new Apple products have been tougher to predict lately, with the end of the yearly refresh for new iPads and the ever-shifting launch window of new iPhones. Fortunately, Rene Ritchie at iMore has some unnamed sources who claim to know what’s up: iMore has learned that Apple is planning the release of the iPhone 5S for this summer, currently for August. Next generation iPads, presumably the iPad 5 and potentially the iPad mini 2, may also debut as soon as this April. iMore has a developed a solid track record for Apple rumors, and the timing doesn’t seem too far-fetched for the iPhone, at least. However, even Ritchie seems a bit skeptical about the chances of new iPads next month. Apple just launched its fourth-generation iPad and the iPad Mini in October, and a Retina display for the latter would probably take more time to implement. The iPhone 5S is rumored to have a similar design to the iPhone 5, but with an improved camera and possibly a built-in fingerprint sensor. The next full-sized iPad is expected to be much thinner and lighter than its predecessors, with a design that hews closer to the iPad Mini. iPhone 5S planned for August, next iPads may debut as soon as April [iMore.com]

Personally, I believe change is good. If I look at the history of the computing industry, I can point to countless changes and paradigm shifts that led us to where we are today. However, most of the change we can point to have been more evolutionary than revolutionary. Most of the change we’ve seen hasn’t been disruptive—until now. The PC industry is observing one of the most significant times of change it has ever seen. If I am being entirely honest with myself, I do not believe every company will survive this disruption, or at least continue in their current form. The State of the PC Industry For years, the PC industry, which we would classify to include desktop and notebook sales at a worldwide level, was growing. It was growing anywhere from 5-12% percent annually over the last 5 years, and in its early days it grew over 30% each year. I think many believed that someday every person on the planet would own one of these types of computers. For a point of reference, the PC industry was sustaining growth and for a brief time sold between 380 million and 400 million units worldwide for a couple of years. A good chunk of this was thanks to netbooks — low cost, highly portable computers. At one point in time, netbooks hit just over 30 million in unit sales. For most companies in the PC industry, things were good. Then the iPad happened. For the past two years, the emergence of the iPad has caused PC industry growth to slow and even decline. Last year, sales of desktops and notebooks were off between 5-7% depending whose numbers you look at. But perhaps the most telling was the 4th quarter, which traditionally is a strong quarter for PCs. Holiday 2012 PC sales were off over 10% worldwide according to our estimates. The story is not better for 2013, as our firm and many other analyst firms predict the PC industry to be in negative numbers again. To be honest, I

Starting Tuesday, February 5, Apple’s latest-generation full-size iPad will be available with 128 gigabytes of storage. Current models are available in 16-, 32- and 64-gigabyte flavors with prices beginning at $499, $599 and $699, respectively. The 128-gigabyte version will start at $799 for the Wi-Fi-only model, while the model featuring either an AT&T or Verizon 4G LTE cellular connection will run $929. As a refresher, Apple’s iPad pricing structure is as follows: iPad with just Wi-Fi: $499, $599, $699 or $799 for 16, 32, 64 or 128 gigabytes, respectively. iPad with Wi-Fi + Verizon/AT&T: $629, $729, $829 or $929 for 16, 32, 64 or 128 gigabytes, respectively. As you can see, each model costs $100 more and doubles the storage of the one before it; models with cellular connections cost $130 more than the Wi-Fi-only models with comparable storage. Aside from increasing storage, however, there are no additional performance gains for spending an extra $100 on the next-highest model.
A much slimmer iPad, an iPad Mini with a Retina display and an iPhone with a built-in fingerprint reader could all be on tap for 2013, according to one industry analyst. As MacRumors reports, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has published a research report that tries to predict Apple‘s entire 2013 product lineup. Although analysts tend to have terrible track records with Apple rumors, Kuo is a notable exception. Let’s do a quick look at some of his past forecasts: Kuo’s January 2011 predictions about the iPad 2, including the dual-core processor, camera specs and screen resolution turned out mostly accurate. (He was off by 0.2 GHz on the clock speed of the A5 chip.) Apple’s iPhone 5 achieved a thickness of under 8 mm, thanks to in-cell touch technology and the use of a metal back plate instead of glass, just as Kuo predicted five months before launch. As Kuo expected, Apple discontinued the 17-inch MacBook Pro last year and redesigned its iMacs, but without Retina displays. That’s a pretty good track record. So let’s hear out Kuo’s predictions for 2013: The iPhone 5S will be similar to its predecessor, but with a faster processor, a better camera with smart LED flash and a fingerprint reader built into the home button, which would reduce the need for passwords everywhere. Keep in mind that Apple acquired AuthenTec, a maker of fingerprint sensor technology, last year. A cheaper iPhone for prepaid and emerging markets–a popular rumor these days–would be a lot like the iPhone 5, but with a plastic enclosure, available in six colors. The next iPad will be considerably slimmer and lighter. That’d make sense given that Apple had to add bulk to its third-generation iPad to accommodate a Retina display. Kuo expects the iPad Mini to get a Retina display as well this year. Non-Retina display MacBook Pros will meet their maker this year, as Apple moves to an all-Retina lineup at lower prices than before. The MacBook Air line won’t get Retina displays this year, Kuo believes. Their main improvement will be

With Apple‘s recent unveiling of the iPad Mini and the fourth-generation iPad with Retina display, the company now sells 14 different versions of the iPad. Prices range from $329 to $829 and include three base models: the 7.9-inch iPad Mini, the 9.7-inch iPad 2 and the 9.7-inch iPad with Retina display (the iPad 2 is the oldest of the bunch). Apple’s basic pricing formula for iPads is as follows: Each model begins with 16 gigabytes of storage and a Wi-Fi connection. Doubling the storage adds an extra $100 to the price. Adding a 3G or 4G LTE connection adds an extra $130 to the price. Which model of iPad is “best” depends on your needs, but here are a few stats: The iPad Mini and iPad 2 both sport a dual-core A5 processor and a 1024×768-resolution screen. BUT! The iPad Mini features better front- and rear-facing cameras than the iPad 2 and the cellular models feature faster connections than the iPad 2. Also, the same amount of pixels on a 7.9-inch screen versus a 9.7-inch screen will look better on the smaller screen. The iPad 2 cellular model features a slower 3G connection from either AT&T or Verizon, while the cellular models of the iPad Mini and iPad with Retina display feature faster 4G LTE connections from AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. Performance-wise, the iPad with Retina display could be considered the “best” since it has the newest processor: Apple’s dual-core A6X with quad-core graphics. The 2048×1536-resolution screen is also better than the screens on the iPad Mini and iPad 2. The iPad 2 is technologically the least advanced of all the available iPad models. It’s slightly lighter and thinner than the newer iPad with Retina display, however. Unsurprisingly, the iPad Mini is the most portable of the bunch. It measures 7.87 inches long by 5.3 inches wide by 0.28 inches thick and weighs just shy of 0.7 pounds. Apple claims that all three models will get the same battery life: up to 10 hours when using the Wi-Fi connections or

With the $329 iPad Mini, Apple is betting that slim design, a larger screen and a bigger app selection can lure people away from other small tablets. The iPad Mini has a 7.9-inch, 1024-by-768 resolution display. Although it’s smaller than the 9.7-inch display on current iPads, it has the same 1024-by-768 resolution as Apple’s first- and second-generation tablets. That means it’s wider than competing 7-inch tablets, and it can run all the same apps as current iPads. The app compatibility is important, considering that tablet-optimized apps are the iPad’s greatest strength over competing tablets. During a press event, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the iTunes App Store now has more than 275,000 iPad apps that have been optimized for the larger display. The iPad Mini looks a lot like the leaked cases and product renders that have been popping up for the last few months. It’s 7.2 mm thick, making it 23 percent thinner than the larger iPad, and it’s 53 percent lighter, at 0.68 pounds. (Apple says the iPad Mini is as thin as a pencil and as light as a pad of paper.) Other specs include an A5 processor, HD front-facing camera, a 5-megapixel rear camera and optional 4G LTE connectivity. The iPad Mini gets 10 hours of battery life, and uses the same Lightning connector found in the iPhone 5. Prices for the iPad Mini start at $329 with 16 GB of storage and Wi-Fi; 32 GB and 64 GB models are available for $429 and $529, respectively, and 4G LTE costs an additional $130. It’ll be available in black or white, and has its own optional Smart Covers, similar to those of the larger iPad. The price leaves a bit of breathing room for $200 tablets such as Google’s Nexus 7, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and Barnes & Noble’s Nook HD. Pre-orders for the iPad Mini begin on Friday. The Wi-Fi version goes on sale November 2, and the 4G LTE version will arrive two weeks later in the U.S. and several other countries. Apple also
