To go along with its new contract-free wireless plans, T-Mobile is offering trade-in credit for iPhone owners. If you bring in an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S by June 16, T-Mobile will waive the $100 down payment on a new iPhone 5, and will also provide a $120 credit toward monthly payments, accessories or other phones. (Normally, the iPhone 5 on T-Mobile costs $100 down and $20 per month for two years, plus the cost of wireless service.) That brings the total savings to $220 with the trade-in credit, which is comparable to what you’d get by trading an iPhone 4S to a buyback service like Gazelle or Nextworth. There’s no reason not to trade directly to T-Mobile if that’s where you plan to subscribe anyway. Just keep in mind that you’d still be on the hook for any outstanding contract with your existing carrier, which would mean paying an early termination fee if you decide to leave. The iPhone 5 launches on T-Mobile this Friday, April 12. To figure out if T-Mobile’s new plans are a good deal for you, check out our guide to doing the math.

Good news, would-be iPhone 4S buyers still unconvinced Apple’s death-grip reception troubles with the iPhone 4 didn’t carry over to the lookalike iPhone 4S: Consumer Reports claims they’ve been banished. “In special reception tests of the iPhone 4S that duplicated those we did on the iPhone 4, the newer phone did not display the same reception flaw, which involves a loss of signal strength when you touch a spot on the phone’s lower left side while you’re in an area with a weak signal,” writes CR, adding the iPhone 4S to its list of “recommended” phones. (MORE: Apple iPhone 4S Battery Life Still Circling the Drain?) That’s an honor never bestowed upon the iPhone 4, which CR recently tested again using “new samples,” noting that the iPhone 4 “continues to exhibit that problem.” Because of the flaw, the magazine says it will “continue to omit the iPhone 4 from our list of recommended models, despite its otherwise fine performance.” It’s not a problem I’ve noticed, speaking as an iPhone 4 owner since Verizon got into the game last February. I use a protective plastic case, however, which wraps around the edges and prevents my hands from making direct contact with the phone’s looping silver-metal perimeter. Another interesting takeaway: CR says the iPhone 4S did “very well” on its standard battery tests, noting that both the iPhone 4S and new samples of the iPhone 4 “displayed no notable battery problems in additional special tests we carried out.” The magazine conducted the supplemental tests after noticing users complaining on various support forums that the 4S’s battery life was subpar, a problem Apple has since acknowledged and says will be fixed in an upcoming iOS 5 software update. CR‘s final take, no surprise: “Overall, the new iPhone 4S scores higher in the Ratings than the iPhone 4.” It certainly ought to, with its faster processor, superior camera and Siri voice command software. Whether those kinds of evolutionary updates—and now, declaration by a respected consumer advocacy mag that the phone is reception-issue-free—will be enough to nudge you

In the last few months, Apple’s security has been called into question more than once—not only for losing a pre-release iPhone 4S, but also for allegedly getting involved with the San Francisco Police Department’s investigation into the missing phone. It may come as no surprise, then, that Apple’s VP of Global Security recently left the company. The 9to5Mac blog is reporting that John Thirault has left Apple after four years of heading the company’s security efforts, including a rumored “World Wide Loyalty Team.” A former FBI agent, he came to Apple following more than a decade as Chief Security Officer at Pfizer. No official reason has been offered for his resignation, and Apple has declined to comment on his departure.
Look at that iPhone 4S, all sleek and new and, well, pretty much identical to the iPhone 4 on the outside. It’s what’s inside that counts, from the 4S’s superior camera and faster all-in-one processor to a voice assistant named Siri you can’t find anywhere else—anywhere else that’s not an Apple phone, anyway. It sounds like a Siri port to Apple’s older iPhone 4 is in the offing. Apple is, according to jailbreak news-watcher JBN, testing Siri on devices “other than the iPhone 4S.” The claim’s origin? “A source close to Apple,” writes JBN. Grab your salt shakers, everyone, because here we go… (MORE: What the Heck Happened to Siri?) JBN’s hearing the iPhone 4, specifically, but since the source claims “phones,” plural, JBN reasons we’ll see Siri running on older devices, too. While I’m assuming for performance reasons that wouldn’t include anything with the number ’3′ in its moniker, there’s always the iPad and iPad 2. The test, claims JBN’s source, involves a special version of Siri developed by Apple to work on “older devices” and handed out to select employees. Happy as I’d be to see an iPhone 4 port of Siri, speaking as an iPhone 4 owner looking at a late 2012 upgrade timeframe, I’m not sure this rumor passes the smell test. The iPhone 4S is a nominal update to the iPhone 4. The camera’s better, true, but not spectacularly so, and the faster A5 processor’s arguably overkill for a device with a tiny 3.5-inch display (to say nothing of its impact on the phone’s battery life). Siri remains one of the 4S’s key distinctions. Why, assuming the company was toying with giving Siri away to iPhone 4 users as a freebie upgrade, would Apple eliminate that distinction? Siri’s arrival on the iPad family is all but guaranteed, on the other hand, and it’s possible that’s what the scuttlebutt’s really about, say an iPad 2 version, perhaps to accompany the rumored iPad 2 update—not a full-on iPad 3—rumored to be in production now and shipping early next

Open mouth, insert foot: Siri apparently did something like that yesterday, responding to iPhone 4S owners’ questions with decidedly un-savvy answers. Answers like: “Sorry, I’m having trouble connecting to the network” and “Sorry I’m not able to connect right now” and “Sorry, I don’t have a network connection.” But users actually did have a network connection—it turns out Siri didn’t, because Siri needs one, right back to Apple HQ, in order to figure out what you’re talking about and deliver a helpful (or occasionally witty) reply, whether what you’re asking about pertains to local content or no. Because her brain’s part-online. Because…you know, the cloud. (MORE: Catfight! Siri, Meet Iris, Your 8-Hour-Old Android Rival) No one’s sure exactly what happened, and Apple hasn’t offered an official explanation. Some users called into Apple for assistance and mentioned on Apple’s official support forums that customer support representatives were stating Apple was having “server issues,” that the service had been “overloaded” and that Apple was working on a remedy. The recommended solution at the time: “Try later,” and if that doesn’t work, “call back tomorrow.” Word this morning is that Siri’s back, but without Apple’s official word on the apparent outage, it’s hard to say what’s going on. In a much longer complaint thread, users have been unloading on Apple for what they view as a gap between Siri’s promise and execution. “I swore up and down that I would never get an IPhone, but when they came out with Siri I just had to get one,” writes one user. “Now it never works and I’m kicking myself for switching over. I spent a lot of money on this phone just for Siri and it has been very disappointing so far.” “Normally I’ve had very few problems using Siri. She’s usually there and eager to assist me,” writes another. “Today, however, I think she’s joined the ‘OCCUPY’ movement and has joined the General Strike…cuz I’m getting no cooperation or work out of here any of the number of times I’ve tried throughout the day.” “Anyone

From one spat to the next, the latest footnote to the chapter in the book that’s part of an ongoing legal series of thrust and counters involves Samsung demanding that Apple pony up the source code for its just-released iPhone 4S. Make this salvo number “I’ve lost count,” following Apple putting the kibosh on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales in Australia a few weeks ago. According to Samsung’s legal counsel, Cynthia Cochrane (and by way of Smart Office), Samsung needs the cart to produce the horse, the cart being Apple’s iPhone 4S source code, and the horse being Cupertino’s alleged infringement of three Samsung wireless 3G patents. Apple denies the claim, stating that it’s covered under something called Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory terms, or FRAND, but Samsung argues FRAND may not be applicable in Oz. (MORE: Apple-Samsung Patent Battle: Apple’s Totally Winning) If you’re thinking it ends there, think again (as if Samsung would stop at just iPhone 4S source code). The South Korea-based electronics giant also wants a peek at the agreements Apple signed with Australia’s topmost mobile phone carriers, e.g. Vodafone, Telstra and Optus. That includes figuring out the subsidies said telcos pay Apple to sell the iPhones with plans. Samsung’s goal is to see the iPhone 4S banned down under, and Cochrane argues the company needs all of the above information to make its case. “It goes to show that since the iPhone 3G was made available in Australia in July 2008, the impact on the market for every iPhone product has been significant, and has lead to a substantial increase … in market share by revenue,” argued Cochrane in court, reports Smart Office. “If subsidies are given for the iPhone 4S, there are less to go around for my client’s products,” she added. Samsung’s chances of putting the brakes on the iPhone 4S? The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was banned before it went on sale, but the iPhone 4S has been available in Australia since October 14. Apple counsel’s take: “The horse has already bolted.” Reporting this stuff’s like tabulating

Apple iPhone 4S users are in the worst place Apple users can be: Somewhere between a possible iPhone 4S battery life pandemic and official acknowledgement of the issue by Cupertino with usage guidelines and a fix timeframe. Apple’s newest iPhone hit shelves in the U.S. on October 14, and since then threads have appeared across the web, including on Apple’s support site, with thousands of users reporting the iPhone 4S delivers far less than it’s supposed to in standby battery hours and minutes. Apple specs the iPhone 4S for 200 hours of standby time, compared to the iPhone 4′s 300 hours. But the 4S is supposed to offer an hour more of 3G talk time (eight versus iPhone 4′s seven hours), up to 14 hours of 2G talk time, up to six hours for 3G browsing, and up to nine hours browsing with Wi-Fi. (MORE: Siri Co-Founder Bids Apple Adieu (It’s Not What You Think)) But in practice, many claim the phone delivers far less, draining well beyond spec even when lying unused or powered off. “My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it’s [sic] terrible battery life,” wrote a user on Apple’s support forums a day after the iPhone 4S debuted, kickstarting a thread that’s seen 2,622 replies and 174,000 views since. “When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby!” Scan that thread and you’ll find a chorus of disenchanted Apple fans. One says the iPhone 4S “seems to lose 1% every 3-4 minutes, even when locked/asleep.” Another reports experiencing “a 10-15% drop per hour,” despite having “almost everything turned off.” A third says that after unplugging a fulling charged 4S, “after an hour” and “very little use, 10 percent of the battery is gone.” And so forth, for over 175 pages and roughly a dozen posts per page. To be fair, Apple users like to complain, sometimes about the most innocuous things. I remember a thread years ago about lines appearing across the

Siri Hacked onto iPhone 4, but Don’t Get Too Excited

Turns out you don’t need an iPhone 4S to run Siri, Apple’s new virtual assistant software. All you need instead are some serious hacking skills and, well, actually, a spare iPhone 4S. Unfortunately, reports of the iPhone 4 running Siri are a bit overblown at the moment. Although 9to5Mac has video proof of the hack in action, you may never achieve it on your own. (MORE: Siri Tricks and Tips: Do More with the iPhone 4S Virtual Assistant) A few reasons why: 1. The first thing you need is a jailbroken iPhone 4S, and to my knowledge an iPhone 4S jailbreak isn’t even publicly available yet. iPhone Dev Team, the group that usually releases iPhone jailbreaks, says the hack still needs lots of work before it can go public. 2. You also need “files from an iPhone 4S which aren’t ours to distribute,” the hacker, Steven Troughton-Smith, told 9to5Mac. And Troughton-Smith isn’t even interested in bringing Siri to a jailbroken app store such as Cydia. He’s only out to prove that the technology works on older devices. Anyone who does distribute Siri without Apple’s permission would be breaking the law. 3. To function, Siri must communicate with Apple’s servers. So even if you somehow got Siri working on an iPhone 4, there’s no guarantee that Apple won’t figure out how to detect unauthorized users and shut them down. The bigger takeaway from this development, as CNet points out, is simply that the iPhone 4 can technically run Siri. This seems to confirm the cynic’s view that Apple is withholding the software so more people buy the iPhone 4S. I have an alternate theory: Because Siri puts demand on Apple servers, Apple is limiting the software to new devices to prevent the servers from getting overwhelmed. That might’ve been the right call, given reports of Siri not responding for some iPhone 4S users. In any case, don’t get your hopes up for hacking Siri onto an iPhone 4, iPod Touch or iPad. Even though it’s technically possible, there’s still a lot of

Bad news for tech-loving Scots—the iPhone 4S doesn’t understand what you’re saying. Siri, Apple’s personal assistant, can recognize accents everywhere from Australia to London (and respond in-kind). It can even understand you if you speak to it in French or German. But live in Edinburgh or Aberdeen? Sorry, you’re out of luck. (PHOTOS: The Long, Extraordinary Career of Steve Jobs) Several British papers, including the Daily Mail and The Independent, have reported that people with strong Scottish accents are having a hard time getting Siri to understand them. The video above shows a man with a strong Scottish accent failing to get Siri to perform a simple task: creating a reminder. Another video shows Siri misinterpreting 12 o’clock as “trebilcock,” while this BBC report shows the iPhone 4S misunderstanding such simple questions as “Is it a nice day?” on the streets of Aberdeen. Ultimately, it might not make a difference; the man in the BBC video who claims he’ll buy the iPhone 4S regardless of whether or not it can understand his accent is not alone. According to the Daily Record, the phone, which retails for £499 in the U.K., still had people lining up—er, I mean, queueing—in front of Scotland’s three Apple stores on the day it was released. For all the attention Siri is getting, this is a reminder that it’s not the only reason people are buying the iPhone 4S. The crisp resolution, the A5 dual-core chip and people’s fanatic devotion to Apple might have something to do with it as well.
