Look out, your next iOS device may do away with that fussy charging cable and cradle. In its place? A pair of earbuds. Yep, I said earbuds. Those things you stick in your ears to listen to music, or maybe use to lasso a pen off your desk if you’re lazy (as well as adept at making lassos out of earphones, which probably means you’d be great in a circus, too). Don’t ditch your charge cables yet, but Patently Apple noticed a U.S. Patent & Trademark Office patent by Apple, published just this morning, for an “Inductive Charging System” compatible with iOS devices. Since you’re probably wondering, inductive charging involves plying the electromagnetic field to move energy between two objects—basically a kind of wireless energy transfer. If you have an electric toothbrush, specifically the kind you place on a plastic nub, it’s using inductive charging to juice up. (LIST: The Top 10 Everything of 2010) The trouble with inductive charging is that it can take a long time to move enough energy to power something like a smartphone or tablet (or an unwieldy charging coil). Thus inductive charging’s opposite, con-ductive charging, which involves physical contact between batteries and a charger. That’s how we charge most of our tech toys today. According to Patently Apple, Apple’s coming at this from several angles. One involves wrapping your earphone cable around a charging tower (pictured above) that looks a trifle ho-hum, almost like a wooden paper towel dowel. Your earbuds, connected to your iOS device, would contain a conductive metal mesh to initiate charging…all of which sounds like trading one sort of cable clutter for another. A variant idea’s less clumsy-sounding, and eliminates the charge tower. In fact it does away with connective wiring entirely. Imagine headphones designed to detect low frequency (inaudible to humans) audio, which would cause sensors in the earbuds to vibrate. Those vibrations could then be converted into electrical current by a transducer in the earbuds, in turn charging the connected iOS device. It’s called “acoustic charging,” or as someone living a hundred years ago (or you

Apple has apparently started manufacturing parts for the iPhone 5 (or 4s?), which in all likelihood will be available come October. But as curiosity would have it, speculation is already mounting as to what sort of features the next iteration of the iPhone after that will have. The latest report surfaced by the Wall Street Journal states that “[Apple] has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone,” so as to provide a clue to an impending overhaul. The version due this fall will reportedly resemble the iPhone 4, but thinner and lighter with an improved 8-megapixel camera (hence the possibility of it being named the 4s). If history does indeed repeat itself, the version following this year’s version should be the recipient of a full-fledged makeover. (LIST: Top 10 Apple Moments) Over at 9 to 5 Mac they’ve put two and two together, pointing to an earlier This is my next report saying that the iPhone 6, according to sources, will have a slew of new features including “some form of inductive or touch charging,” a sleeker compact body, and a bigger 3.7-inch screen to help rectify a slight dip in pixel density. A few phones on the market have already been experimenting with inductive charging, which uses electromagnetics to wirelessly charge a device’s batteries, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the feature was more common than not come next year. At the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, one of iOS 5‘s most promising new features was that it received updates wirelessly, meaning users will not longer have to to connect to a computer and use iTunes to transfer the latest operating system to the phone. Inductive cord-free charging would seem to reiterate Apple’s wireless strategy, as it’d certainly be a crest in Apple’s ardent minimalism.
I’m ready for my upgrade, by which I mean from a well-worn early 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro to a shiny new Thunderbolt-equipped 11.6-inch MacBook Air—if Apple does right by me spec-wise with its imminent MacBook Air refresh, anyway. The latest rumors (per DigiTimes) don’t tell us much about what to expect from Cupertino’s ultraportable not-a-netbook (but really, yes Apple, a netbook) product update, save that it’s due to happen in July. But wait, didn’t we already report as much nearly two weeks ago? (PHOTOS: The Long, Extraordinary Career of Steve Jobs) Sort of. We talked Apple’s putative mass order for 380,000 new units, about the new 32 nanometer ultra-low-voltage Core i5 and Core i7 processors and the memory maximum bump from 4GB to 8GB. And last Friday, we heard Apple was actually delaying the new MacBook Airs so they’d come out at the same time as OS X Lion—Apple’s eighth major Mac OS X release, due in July exclusively through Apple’s Mac App Store, though Apple has yet to say when in July specifically. What we hadn’t heard, is that Apple’s third-generation mobile processor, the A6, should show up in Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPad 3 at some point in 2012 (the iPhone 5, rumored to arrive in September, will reportedly use the iPad 2′s existing A5). Credit to DigiTimes for this one, too. What do we know about the A6 processor? Nothing a little baseless (but educated) speculation won’t fix. You know, like that it’ll be faster. And last but not least, looks for as many as 15 million iPhone 5s when Apple launches their fifth-generation iPhone this fall, reports DigiTimes. Manufacturer Pegatron Technology says it expects to reach that number (and share fulfillment responsibilities) with Foxconn Electronics in the first round of orders alone.
Just when you thought touch screen smartphones and tablets couldn’t get any thinner, a new development has paved the way for slimmer gadgets — possibly even the iPhone 6. Toshiba and Sharp are both developing a touch screen technology called low-temperature poly-silicon TFT LCD. Instead of putting sensors and signal processors on a separate system, this tech (dubbed “p-Si LCD” by the hip nerds) places the sensing system directly on the glass substrate. That’s an oversimplification, for sure, but the result is thinner, lighter touch screens that also consume less power. So when might we see this slimming technology on store shelves? Japanese newspaper Nikkan reports that Sharp is setting up one of its factories to build the displays for Apple’s iPhone 6, presumably arriving in 2012. Toshiba, meanwhile, has revealed its own 7-inch touch screen that measures less than a millimeter thick. It’s planning to stick them in automobiles for now, but The Register speculates that they’ll make their way to tablets once the technology becomes cheap enough. For now, you’ll have to make do with tablet and phone thicknesses of about 0.4 inches, give or take. Life’s tough.
