Playing music in multiple rooms around the house can be an expensive endeavor, with products like Sonos costing upwards of $300 per speaker. If you’ve already got a handful of phones, tablets and laptops connected to existing speakers around the house, why not sync them together so they’re all playing the same songs at the same time? Speakerfy, an app that officially launches on iPhone and iPad this week, and on Windows and Android next week, is a quick and dirty way to make it happen. It allows you to synchronize audio playback on multiple phones, tablets and laptops, so you can listen to the same music while wandering from room to room. (Whole-home audio isn’t Speakerfy’s primary intended function. It’s actually billed as a “social sound” app, allowing people to listen to music together across devices. Yes, it’s an app for silent discos. No, I’m not hip enough to partake in said discos. Whole-home audio it is.) Speakerfy streams audio over your local Wi-Fi network, or over a shared mobile hotspot, to any device that’s also running the app. Just send an invite to the devices you want to connect, then choose a song, album or playlist from your music collection. The other devices will start playing music in time with the host device. Right now, Speakerfy isn’t perfect. Every time you play a new song, there’s a delay of a few seconds as the devices get in sync, and once playback begins, the receiving devices stutter for a moment while the audio falls in line. John Wright, Speakerfy’s president, told me that the company’s working on the issue. The app itself is also aesthetically rough around the edges, and it’s prone to strange behavior. When I first tried the app, my iPhone and iPad failed to get in sync, and a message told me to force-close and restart the app. I had to do that again later on, when I’d left both devices idle for a while. Jared Newman / TIME.com Finally, there’s one major limitation to Speakerfy: It

You’re walking out of the grocery store when the idea hits you: The Greatest Song of All Time. All the elements are in your head–drums, bass, guitar, vocals–and ready to be recorded into reality. But alas, you don’t have your iPad, so you don’t have GarageBand! And by the time you get home, the idea is gone. That’ll never happen again, now that Apple has launched GarageBand for the iPhone. The app is just as capable as its iPad counterpart, letting you record tracks using virtual instruments, sound samples, your own voice or a guitar. And if you already have the iPad app, GarageBand is a free download on the iPhone 3GS or above, or the iPod Touch 3rd generation or higher. (LIST: 50 Best iPhone Apps of 2011) I gave GarageBand a whirl on my old iPhone 3GS. Although certain actions took a few moments to load on this outdated hardware, the instruments were responsive enough, and everything is laid out pretty much like it is on the iPad. Some options are stowed away on separate screens instead of drop-down boxes, as they should be, and there’s no dedicated Undo button (you’ve got to shake the device, like you would to undo text), but otherwise I had no trouble creating songs or getting around the interface. This may just be a personal preference, but for some instruments I was actually more comfortable on the iPhone than on the larger iPad. With drums, for example, it found it easier to tap out beats with my thumbs on the smaller, handheld device, instead of laying the iPad down and using my forefingers. I’m chalking it up to years of playing video games. With that in mind, my only nitpick is that you can’t wirelessly transfer song files from one iOS device to another. You have to go through iTunes, which is a cumbersome process. Otherwise, this app is good enough to make me regret, ever so slightly, going with Android for my current phone, because you never know when the muse will

The rumors were true, and it’s finally here: a native Gmail app for your Apple device. You’ll get push notifications, inbox searching, autocompleting e-mail addresses, photo uploads and—if you’re an iPad user—a split view with your inbox on the left and your messages on the right. You’ll also have access to Gmail’s “Priority Inbox” features, message starring, labeling, and spam reporting. The app is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, provided you’ve got iOS version 4 or above—which should be just about everyone by now. It’s available in the App Store here… UPDATE (2:22pm): And just like that, she’s gone. Google has updated its blog post with the following: “Earlier today we launched a new Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app. We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it.” Here’s the offending error message, too: Introducing the Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch [Google]

If you live with other people, you know the problem: On Wednesday you notice that you’re out of milk, but you’ve forgotten about that by the time your spouse goes shopping on Friday. Or you write a note on that pad on the fridge, but your handwriting is illegible. Or what if the two of you go shopping at different stores and both buy milk? We’re used to living with these problems, but we don’t have to any more. Cloud-based shopping list services combined with smartphone apps ease shopping chores. When you use your smartphone to mark what needs to be bought, the rest of the family will see it on their phones as well. Grocery Gadgets: On the Web and In Your Phone At least you can do that with the service I’m recommending, Grocery Gadgets. You can access the service on your browser for free, but that’s of limited use because the web site isn’t mobile-friendly. You probably don’t want to create this week’s shopping list on a computer, and you certainly don’t want to take one shopping. So you’re best off using Grocery Gadgets on your smartphone. And while that’s not free, it’s not exactly expensive, either. The iPhone app costs $4; the Android one, $3. These apps are almost functionally identical, although the iPhone one is prettier to look at. Apps are also available for BlackBerry, Nokia, and Windows Phone handsets. (LIST: 50 Best iPhone Apps of 2011) There are free apps, as well, but they’re too severely crippled to be useful. There are also no ongoing charges for the service. Grocery Gadgets syncs the data on your phone to the data in the cloud. You and your family will have the same shopping list on all of your phones. Grocery Gadgets has one other fault I want to bring up right now: The user interface isn’t as obvious as it should be, especially if you’re moving between the website and a phone app. For instance, the web version has a “Favorites” list which contains every

It’s hard to believe that Instagram launched only about a year ago. In a mere three months it accumulated its first million users, and now supports over eight million pocket photographers. Its success is in no small part due to its easy-to-understand value proposition: instantaneous photo sharing with a creative mix of filters. As founder and CEO Kevin Systrom told Fast Company back in February: “You have to explain everything you do, and people have to understand it, within seconds.” (MORE: Instagram CEO: ‘Android Is a Major Priority for Us’) The challenge, of course, is innovating upon the existing app without cutting into its simplicity. And yet, Instagram 2.0 manages to succeed at this beautifully. Here’s a list of some of the new features: Live Filters Previously users had to snap a picture and then apply a filter like X-pro II or Lomo-fi after the fact. That’s no longer the case. Now you’ll be able to see how a filter would look before taking a photo through the viewfinder. You’ll still be able to apply filters the old way if you please, too. New Filter Options The service added four new vintage filters. Here they are per the Instagram blog: Instant tilt-shift Tilt-shifting your photos is now 100x faster as you’ll be able to pinch, zoom and drag blurs around, giving your images dramatic depth. You’ll be able to use it in live view mode as well. Higher resolution photos This is major. In the older version of Instagram you were limited to a serviceable 612 x 612 pixels. Now photos are 3x larger: On the iPhone 4 the photos are 1936 x 1936 pixels, and on the iPhone 3GS it’s 1536 x 1536 pixels. If anything, it demonstrates the company is willing to move beyond (some would say) gimmicky applications of vintage-looking filters. Now you’ll be able to take and share large, detailed photos and share them via the app. Instagram’s growing up! Optional borders, one-click rotation and more Those frames around your photos to make them look like kitschy photographs? They’re now

Don’t get me wrong: I hate my iPhone. I only got one after I accidentally left my Droid on a bus. So I’m not coming to you as a wide-eyed enthusiast, the sort who thinks everything that Apple makes is pure gold. I don’t play Angry Birds, I don’t have a set of bejeweled Hello Kitty cases, and every day I think wistfully of the BlackBerry I had a few phones ago. That said, there are some awesome apps on the iPhone, especially for gastronomes. In no particular order, here are 10 of my favorites.

The FBI has released a free iPhone app that can be used if your child goes missing. Called “Child ID,” the app “provides a convenient place to electronically store photos and vital information about your children so that it’s literally right at hand if you need it,” according to an FBI press release. The release continues, “You can show the pictures and provide physical identifiers such as height and weight to security or police officers on the spot. Using a special tab on the app, you can also quickly and easily e-mail the information to authorities with a few clicks.” (LIST: Top 10 Brazen Heists) Aside from storing personal info about your children, the app also features a tips section along with a checklist that can be used if your child goes missing. Early reviews for the app on iTunes have praised the idea but criticized the lack of password protection. The app features a big, red “Call 911″ button that some users fear could be triggered by kids playing around with the phone. Others have voiced concerns that if the phone were to be stolen, detailed information about their children could fall into the wrong hands. As far as privacy goes, the app’s press release notes “the FBI (and iTunes for that matter) is not collecting or storing any photos or information that you enter in the app. All data resides solely on your mobile device unless you need to send it to authorities.” And implementing a password for the app is a pretty trivial fix, so don’t be surprised to see it added relatively quickly if enough users ask for it.
Instagram, the popular photo sharing service for the iPhone, just announced that it’s hit 150 million photo uploads thanks in no small part to its user base of 7 million picture snappers. For perspective, that’s about 15 photos being uploaded every single second. (MORE: Ask Techland: How Can I Take Better Food Photos with My iPhone?) Per the company’s official blog: “We’re constantly amazed by the range of photos shared on Instagram. People use Instagram to snap photos of everyday moments with friends and family and also to document significant personal moments, like weddings and honeymoons. There are Instagram photos from major events like the World Series and the Grammys, and some Instagram photos have even made the national news. Artists and celebrities have begun to give fans a unique look into their lives through photos, while brands like Burberry have started to realize the power of communicating with their followers through images.” The service has experienced enormous growth since it launched in the App Store just last October. The app is perpetually in Apple’s Top 25 “Free Apps” (currently it sits pretty at number 18), and seems poised to accumulate even more mobile photographers. But 150 million photo uploads is a pretty monumental achievement, and champagne is indeed in order, though we’re pretty sure Justin Bieber is responsible for about 100 million of them. Maybe 125 million. Chris Gayomali is a writer-reporter at TIME. Find him on Twitter at @chrigz, on Facebook, or on Google+.
Will a New Mobile Partnership Help Revitalize Zagat?

It’s no secret that crowdsourced review services like Yelp and Citysearch are directly responsible for the downfall of Zagat, whose city guides once reigned over the restaurant review space. If anything, it’s a testament to the Internet as the great leveler: Not only were the other services free, but the reviews were submitted by other like-minded restaurant-goers and aggregated to form a composite score. Essentially, what Yelp did was de-anonymize restaurant reviews to lend them credibility; no longer were they some faceless number in a guide. But now, Zagat’s entered into a partnership with a new location-based discovery service called Picksie. The service launched in June, but was recently updated and is available to iPhone users for free through iTunes. (MORE: Ask Techland: How Can I Take Better Food Photos with My iPhone?) It’s a fine service that uses geo-location and search to find stuff to do in your area. For instance, if you type in “Chinese food,” it’ll aggregate surrounding restaurants and show their location relative to you on a map (with the Zagat score tacked on, if applicable). Picksie also has a partnership with Fandango, so when you’re interested in finding movie theaters you can click-through directly to buy your movie tickets. The interface itself is smooth, and it uses cutesy icons to help users find their way around. It’s an interesting approach on Zagat’s part. I found myself more drawn to a restaurant if it was marked as “Zagat Rated,” though when I clicked around, I wasn’t able to easily navigate my way to an official review or synopsis. The official Zagat app itself ($9.99) rates a woeful two (out of five) stars in the App Store, with plenty of user outrage to boot. One user is calling the current iteration “brazen, and frankly, incompetent” while others deem it “a complete waste of money.” Which is, quite frankly, a bummer, especially as far more competent apps like the voice-activated Dragon Go! (which I’ve been using extensively) and even Foursquare (who’ve been stepping up their discovery game) are being

Despite a few incompatibility issues that were causing it to crash with developer versions of iOS 5, the Google+ iPhone app is a hit. It’s already the top free app in Apple’s app store (though it’s noticeably missing from both the “Featured” tab and the “What’s Hot” tab— what gives, Apple?), and it’s already amassed 1,664 ratings with an average of three stars. That number will probably grow considerably today, even though G+ is still in beta. Here’s a look at some of the new-ish features after spending some time with it this morning. (Or you can just skip to the end. I’m fine either way!) A Much Faster, More User-Friendly Stream Like the mobile web app (which in itself was already pretty impressive), the iPhone’s native interface allows users to intuitively swipe left and right to navigate between three types of Streams: Circles, Nearby and Incoming (users who are aren’t in your Circles that you may be interested in). However, whereas the web version seemed to hit walls causing you to change your swipe’s directions, the app allows users to swipe continuously either left or right. Not only does it make an already fast experience even faster, but the directive nature of it is pretty damn comfortable. Even the “Checking in” option (with the checkbox in the upper-right hand corner) is incredibly quick (the menus open faster than Foursquare!) and the list of places in your proximity is as accurate as it should be. (It automatically checked me into 52nd Street even though I’m on 50th.) (PHOTOS: A History of Google Doodles) However, I encountered a few bugs when actually trying to post an update into the Stream. Every few times I clicked into the share screen it would freeze up; it’s a bug worth noting, even though it passed after a few seconds. Also, whenever I tried to tag other users with the “+” sign, it’d bring up people I’d corresponded with over Gmail, or people I deliberately hadn’t placed in Circles. It’s a minor irk that’ll hopefully
