With details on millions of events of all sorts all over the world, Facebook is — among many other things — the closest thing the world has to a universal repository of things to do, such as concerts, parties, book readings and a whole lot more. But Facebook Events doesn’t seem to be all that high up on Facebook’s list of priorities. The feature hasn’t changed much over the years, and isn’t radically different on a phone than it is on a PC browser. Enter Hangtime. The product of a startup of the same name, founded by veteran entrepreneur Karl Jacob, it’s an iPhone app — and web-based service — which aims to make it much easier to find stuff you’ll like to do among all the options in Facebook Events and other sources. The app debuted for the SXSW conference in March; version 2.0, a substantial upgrade, arrived on the App Store this week. Overall, Hangtime has a nicely done interface: with a few swipes of your thumb, you can view the events in your vicinity on a given day, pull up specific information on a particular activity, see which of your friends are attending or considering doing so and RSVP. Using a map, you can also pinch-and-zoom to specify how big (or small) a geographic area you want to cover. In all cases, the Facebook events you’re seeing are ones with settings that make them visible to you. But you’ll probably see plenty of events you wouldn’t have otherwise encountered — they’re a lot more browsable on Hangtime than they are on Facebook. The app is aimed especially at young people with active social lives, but even not-so-young types should find activities of interest. The new version of the app pulls in the billboard-like artwork associated with an event from Facebook. It also includes events listed on Eventbrite, although with less detail than for Facebook events. You can now specify interests — such as Rock, Comedy, Dance and Books — so other topics you don’t care about are winnowed

Break the law and Apple may follow up by breaking into your iPhone, reports CNET, though if you represent the long arm of the law asking Cupertino to give you a hand (or would the proper term be demanding?), it sounds like you’ll have to wait in line: up to seven weeks, in seems. Why? Because requests from law enforcement officials to hack into someone’s iPhone have been so overwhelming that Apple’s had to create a waiting list to manage them all. Using a highly secure password on your phone (think long and completely random) should keep just about everyone at bay — but not someone with backdoor access. You knew there were rumors of a backdoor on the iPhone, right? Still, even if those rumors haven’t been wildly exaggerated, it sounds like there’s a significant waiting period to enlist Apple’s help. Cnet unearthed court documents revealing that an agent at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (the ATF) tried for three months last summer to find someone “with the forensic capabilities to unlock” an iPhone 4S. Failing that, the agent turned to Apple for help in a case involving a Kentucky man accused of distributing crack cocaine. But according to case opinion filed by U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell, the ATF was “placed on a waiting list” by Cupertino — a waiting list with an up to seven-week delay, says the ATF agent, claiming he was told this by someone in Apple’s legal department. Cnet isn’t sure how long the process ultimately took, but notes it “appears to have been at least four months.” As Ars Technica notes, it’s not clear how much information Apple can access by hacking an iPhone (it’s much easier to get at data replicated to the cloud), but the ATF agent claimed in a sworn statement that Apple “has the capabilities to bypass the security software” on the iPhone, and could “download the contents of the phone to an external memory device” (like a USB key). Apple, as you’d expect, isn’t commenting on the matter, but it’s interesting

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — T-Mobile US Inc., the last of the major U.S. carriers to start carrying iPhones, is selling them at a brisk pace, it reported Wednesday. T-Mobile US, the No. 4 U.S. carrier, said it has sold half a million iPhones since it started on April 12. That puts its sales at roughly the same rate as Sprint Nextel Corp., the No. 3 carrier, which has far more customers. The company said late last year that it planned to sell the iPhone, which helped it keep customers in the first three months of the year. As previously reported, it saw a small increase in customers under its own brand for the first time in four years. Analysts believe the customers were holding out for the iPhone. T-Mobile US’s parent Deutsche Telekom AG, discussed the U.S. business as it reported a 3.5 percent increase in net profit in the first quarter to 564 million euros ($739 million) from 545 million euros in the same quarter a year ago. Earnings rose in part because the company saw smaller deductions for the depreciation of its U.S. business. Deutsche Telekom completed a merger of T-Mobile USA with MetroPCS Communications Inc. on April 30, creating the new T-Mobile US Inc. Deutsche Telekom owns 74 percent of the new company, while the rest went to MetroPCS shareholders. T-Mobile USA, which had been losing contract customers, switched to a new “Un-carrier” approach in March and started selling phones on installment plans. Deutsche Telekom AG also said it had 300 million euros less in accounting-related reductions related to the merger, which is part of a turnaround effort. As the No. 4 mobile provider, T-Mobile USA has struggled against bigger competitors. Otherwise, sales and earnings slipped at Deutsche Telekom. Revenue fell 4.5 percent to 58.7 billion euros, while adjusted operating earnings – which exclude financial items such as depreciation related to the merger – declined 4.3 percent to 4.29 billion euros. That still exceeded the analyst predictions for 4.24 billion euros compiled by financial information provider FactSet.

Just in time for Outdoor Drinking Season (capitalized because of its importance), here’s the iFlask. This $25 iPhone lookalike’s only app is the ability to make you drunk. Phone calls? Nope. E-mail? Who needs it? Internet? Inner-wet… with booze. Though not at all the first iPhone-style flask on the market, the iFlask looks to fancy things up a bit: It holds five ounces of your favorite libation, features a polycarbonate and stainless steel frame, and ships with a collapsible funnel. Just as a USB cord transfers songs to your real iPhone, so does the collapsible funnel transfer liquid that will make you sing… all alone… at a urinal… while you’re at church. You’re a monster, man. There are kids around! Pony up another $10 for the iFlask Ultimate Kit, and you’ll get everything listed above, plus an extra collapsible funnel and a collapsible metal shot glass keychain. Your car key and a shot glass — two items that should always be in close proximity, am I right? (I am not right.) The iFlask is available for preorder, but has no definitive ship date other than “could be late May.” iFlask [GoiFlask.com via This Is Why I'm Broke]

The Future of iOS Is Looking Flat

The odds are looking good that Apple will ditch the textured, bubbly look of its iOS software in favor of something more modern. Citing “multiple people who have either seen or have been briefed” on iOS 7, 9to5Mac reports that the software for iPhones and iPads will sport a flatter look: The new interface is said to be ‘very, very flat,’ according to one source. Another person said that the interface loses all signs of gloss, shine, and skeuomorphism seen across current and past versions of iOS. Another source framed the new OS as having a level of ‘flatness’ approaching recent releases of Microsoft’s Windows Phone ‘Metro’ [user interface]. We’ve heard a similar story before. Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Jonathan Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, was pushing for a flatter look across iOS. A few questions come to mind: Given that both Windows Phone and Android have pushed toward modern software aesthetics, this seems like a rare instance where Apple is following the pack. Can Apple flatten out iOS in a way that seems fresh and original? How big of a shift will this be for users? Will user-interface elements work differently or is this strictly an aesthetic change? To what extent will the changes affect third-party apps, and how much work will they have to do to flatten out their own software? We’ll likely find out on June 10, when Apple kicks off its Worldwide Developers Conference. The company is promising an “in-depth look at what’s next in iOS and OS X” during the event.

It’s been a plausible-sounding rumor for a while. And now it’s reality: Google Now, Google’s voice-controlled assistant, is available for Apple’s iOS. To be specific, it’s launching today as a new feature in the Google Search app for iPhone and iPad, giving users of Apple gadgets a feature which has been unique to Android phones until now. (I was going to say that Now is “finally” arriving on iOS, but it actually didn’t take all that long — the feature debuted only 10 months ago, when Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was announced. It’s just that it’s so clever and useful that it quickly felt like a fundamental Android feature.) Google If you were going to lump Google Now into a category of mobile apps, you’d categorize it with Apple’s own Siri. The emphasis of the two apps is quite different, though. Google Now, like Siri, lets you do stuff by talking to it. But its distinguishing characteristic are its cards — tidy little summaries which show up based on cues such as your location and past actions rather than waiting until you’ve explicitly asked for them to appear. They can tell you about the weather, local attractions, news and sports, travel stuff like flights and hotels and more. I don’t know if I’d call it the best version of Google, but it’s probably the one that most closely tells us where Google thinks it’ll be going over the next few years. I haven’t used the new iOS Google Search yet. (The current version has vaguely Google Now-like aspects without actually being Google Now.) I’m curious about how close it can come to replicating the Android version of Now when it’s part of an app on an operating system that Google doesn’t control. It also won’t be able to do some things which Siri, with its direct integration into the operating system, can do, such as popping up with a press of the Home button and letting you set alarms. But if Google Now retains a decent percentage of its appeal

T-Mobile has announced that it’ll be selling the iPhone 5 starting April 12; it’ll be priced at $100 plus a $20-per-month equipment fee that must be paid for 24 months. “I can finally announce that the phone that redefined the industry has come to T-Mobile,” company president and CEO John Legere said at a New York press event on Tuesday. As reported yesterday, T-Mobile’s no-contract plans are available starting at $50 per month for individual users and include unlimited text messages, unlimited voice minutes, data tethering, and data plans that don’t include overage fees, but are slowed down to 2G data speeds once you’ve hit your cap. The $50 plan includes 500 megabytes of 4G data; there’s a $60 plan with 2.5 gigabytes of 4G data and a $70 plan with unlimited 4G data. (MORE: 5 Things You Should Know About T-Mobile’s New No-Contract Plans) The T-Mobile iPhone 5 will work on the company’s existing HSPA+ network as well as its new 4G LTE network, which was launched today in Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Phoenix, San Jose, and Washington, D.C. and will expand over the coming months. Customers will also be able to purchase the iPhone 4S for $70 down, plus $20 per month for 24 months; the iPhone 4 will cost $15 down, plus $15 per month for 24 months. Both will work on T-Mobile’s existing HSPA+ network and will be available “in select markets and select channels,” according to a company spokesperson. “We are the only carrier that’s going to have HD Voice on the iPhone 5,” said Legere. With HD Voice, T-Mobile promises “nationwide crystal-clear high-definition calling and significantly reduced background noise.” In a Q&A session, a T-Mobile representative mentioned that if a customer were to buy an iPhone 5 for $100 plus the $20-per-month equipment payment plan and that customer wanted to leave T-Mobile, the customer could do so. Though locked to T-Mobile until the handset has been paid off, the phone would work with SIM cards from compatible networks such as AT&T; the customer would simply need

Longtime tech journalist Andy Ihnatko is, it’s safe to say, best known for writing about Apple products. But he’s also a very level-headed guy. And over at TechHive, he’s published a great piece — the first of a three-parter — on why he switched from an iPhone 4S to a Samsung Galaxy S III. A sample: After just a couple of weeks with the Samsung Galaxy S III, my iPhone 4S screen stopped seeming “normal-sized.” At first it became “small” and ultimately it became “too small.” And when I put my phone in a car dock, the iPhone now seems minuscule. There’s almost always more information on the Samsung’s screen. It’s all easier to read, and the controls are either larger, or they’re or grouped less tightly, which makes them easier to hit. The iPhone seems to disappear in the dash. Mind you, I’ve been driving with iPhones for years and I was always very happy with them. But to me, the difference between an iPhone 4S or even an iPhone 5 screen and the 4.8″ display of the GS3 is like the 24″ color TV in my parents’ living room and the 45″ HDTV in mine. The whole story is worth your time whether you’re a diehard iPhone fan, an Android partisan or someone who — like me — has wavered back and forth between platforms and will probably continue to do so. (At the moment, I’m on an iPhone 5, mostly because I still find the overall quality of its App Store offerings markedly superior to those in Google Play.) Why I switched from iPhone to Android [TechHive]

Release dates for new Apple products have been tougher to predict lately, with the end of the yearly refresh for new iPads and the ever-shifting launch window of new iPhones. Fortunately, Rene Ritchie at iMore has some unnamed sources who claim to know what’s up: iMore has learned that Apple is planning the release of the iPhone 5S for this summer, currently for August. Next generation iPads, presumably the iPad 5 and potentially the iPad mini 2, may also debut as soon as this April. iMore has a developed a solid track record for Apple rumors, and the timing doesn’t seem too far-fetched for the iPhone, at least. However, even Ritchie seems a bit skeptical about the chances of new iPads next month. Apple just launched its fourth-generation iPad and the iPad Mini in October, and a Retina display for the latter would probably take more time to implement. The iPhone 5S is rumored to have a similar design to the iPhone 5, but with an improved camera and possibly a built-in fingerprint sensor. The next full-sized iPad is expected to be much thinner and lighter than its predecessors, with a design that hews closer to the iPad Mini. iPhone 5S planned for August, next iPads may debut as soon as April [iMore.com]

A much slimmer iPad, an iPad Mini with a Retina display and an iPhone with a built-in fingerprint reader could all be on tap for 2013, according to one industry analyst. As MacRumors reports, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has published a research report that tries to predict Apple‘s entire 2013 product lineup. Although analysts tend to have terrible track records with Apple rumors, Kuo is a notable exception. Let’s do a quick look at some of his past forecasts: Kuo’s January 2011 predictions about the iPad 2, including the dual-core processor, camera specs and screen resolution turned out mostly accurate. (He was off by 0.2 GHz on the clock speed of the A5 chip.) Apple’s iPhone 5 achieved a thickness of under 8 mm, thanks to in-cell touch technology and the use of a metal back plate instead of glass, just as Kuo predicted five months before launch. As Kuo expected, Apple discontinued the 17-inch MacBook Pro last year and redesigned its iMacs, but without Retina displays. That’s a pretty good track record. So let’s hear out Kuo’s predictions for 2013: The iPhone 5S will be similar to its predecessor, but with a faster processor, a better camera with smart LED flash and a fingerprint reader built into the home button, which would reduce the need for passwords everywhere. Keep in mind that Apple acquired AuthenTec, a maker of fingerprint sensor technology, last year. A cheaper iPhone for prepaid and emerging markets–a popular rumor these days–would be a lot like the iPhone 5, but with a plastic enclosure, available in six colors. The next iPad will be considerably slimmer and lighter. That’d make sense given that Apple had to add bulk to its third-generation iPad to accommodate a Retina display. Kuo expects the iPad Mini to get a Retina display as well this year. Non-Retina display MacBook Pros will meet their maker this year, as Apple moves to an all-Retina lineup at lower prices than before. The MacBook Air line won’t get Retina displays this year, Kuo believes. Their main improvement will be

If you ever wished your fat fingers would stop getting in the way of your iPhone’s touch screen, a company called Canopy thinks it has an answer. It’s come up with an iPhone case, called Sensus, that adds touch-sensitive panels to the rear and sides of the phone. To get a feel for it, I tried a short demo of a space shooting game, where you must drag a small spaceship around while firing at incoming enemies. Controlling the ship through the rear touch panel instead of the iPhone’s touch screen prevents your fingers from obscuring the action. (This may sound familiar to owners of Sony’s PlayStation Vita, which has a rear touch panel built-in.) Canopy has other uses in mind for Sensus. For instance, it’s developed its own camera app with functions mapped to the touch sensitive strips on the sides of the phone. That way, you can tap the edge of the phone to turn the flash on or off, or to adjust other settings. Sensus relies on the iPhone for power, but doesn’t eat away any battery life when its touch functions aren’t in use. (MORE: Check out TIME Tech’s complete coverage of the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show) It’s an interesting concept, but one that will have a tough time gaining momentum. The usefulness of the device will be entirely dependent on app developers, who must add Sensus functionality to their software. At launch, Canopy expects support from roughly 20 to 50 apps–an insignificant sliver of the hundreds of thousands of apps in Apple’s store. Still, Canopy’s chief strategy officer, Matt Pacyga, said that several large game publishers have shown interest. Canopy plans to launch Sensus this summer, priced somewhere between $59 and $99. It’ll be available for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5. Pacyga seemed unsure about the possibility of an Android version, given how many different-sized phones are on the market. You can check out a video of the Sensus case in action below.

As my colleague Harry McCracken reported last night, Google has come to the rescue of lost iPhone users with its own Google Maps app. Although the app has been rumored for some time now, one of the big questions was whether Apple would actually approve it for the App Store. Harry says he was never worried; Apple doesn’t decline apps for competitive reasons any more, and the arrival of Google Maps just makes the iPhone a better competitor to Android. No problem, right? Well, not exactly. Google Maps does make the iPhone better, but it also poses a threat to Apple on its very own platform. With a native Maps app, Google is starting to sink its hooks deeper into iOS. The app itself is just the beginning. I thought TechCrunch’s interview with Daniel Graf, director of Google Maps for mobile, was an interesting read — particularly this exchange: TechCrunch: How does Google feel about Apple now allowing another Maps app to be the default and Safari clicks not opening up Google Maps? [Note: I think this question was supposed to say "not allowing," as is the case on iOS.] Daniel Graf: We want our native Chrome and Search apps to give you the opportunity to jump into Google Maps. With our new SDK, this is up to the developers to integrate into their apps if they like. Safari is out of our control. (MORE: Problem Resolved: Google Maps for iPhone Is Here, Looks Good) Apple doesn’t allow the user to decide which apps perform certain functions by default. For instance, if you tap on a link in Mail, it always opens in Safari, even if you prefer to use Chrome or another alternative browser. Likewise, if you try to get directions to a restaurant through Yelp’s app, you’ll be taken directly into Apple Maps, even if you prefer to use Google Maps instead.
The rumor mill is buzzing about what might be next for Apple’s iPhone, and it’s not all stuff we’ve heard before. In addition to the usual chatter about NFC, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek thinks the next iPhone–or “iPhone 5S” as he calls it–will have a “super HD” display, and will come in six to eight colors, just like the new iPod Touch. Misek believes the phone will launch in June, breaking with Apple’s recent fall release schedule. (More on that shortly.) Before we go any further, allow me to put up a big fat disclaimer: When it comes to Apple rumors, Misek has an iffy track record. His bad predictions include a T-Mobile iPhone in 2011 (he’ll be off by two years), an Apple-made Netflix rival in 2011 (hasn’t happened), a Verizon iPhone in 2010 (off by a year) and an Apple television late this year (not happening). I should know better than to recirculate this stuff. But! Apple did launch its iPod Touch in eight colors. And colorful phones are kind of an in-thing right now, with handsets like the Windows Phone 8x, Lumia 920 and Galaxy S III coming in hues beyond white, silver and gray. The idea of more color options for the iPhone seems plausible, not that it matters, since you’re going to wrap your iPhone in a bulky, multicolored case anyway. Two iPhones Per Year? The other, more credible and semi-related bit of rumor-mongering comes from Asymco analyst Horace Dediu, who makes the case for Apple switching to a twice-a-year product cycle for new iPhones and iPads. Among Dediu’s reasons for thinking so: All of Apple’s major products were updated this fall, which leaves a huge gap in the first half of next year; a spring launch would shake up an iPhone product cycle so predictable that consumers hold off on buying iPhones until the fall (a problem that Apple has acknowledged); and capital expenditures seem to be outpacing production. Also, Apple did launch new 9.7-inch iPads in March and November of this year, which could be
