Now that 2012 is over, the Wall Street Journal is pondering whether the e-reader era is coming to an end. Although the story stops short of using the D word, it notes that e-reader sales hit their peak in 2011, fell sharply in 2012 and will continue to slide in the years ahead, citing forecasts from IDC and IHS iSuppli. The story harps on the standard reasons for the e-reader’s impending troubles: full-featured tablets can read e-books and do a whole lot more, and the price gap between e-readers and cheap tablets has narrowed, so it’s harder to justify buying a single-purpose reader like the Kindle Paperwhite or Nook Simple Touch. While it’s provocative to declare in general terms that once popular technologies or products are on their way out, I’d rather think about what the actual effects may be. For one thing, e-readers aren’t going away anytime soon, at least not until their unique properties can be matched by inexpensive tablets. The fact that e-readers are cheap, are easy to read even in sunlight and can last for a month or two on a single battery charge means they can be nice to have around, even if you own a more expensive tablet. There’s also something to be said for their mandatory focus on reading, which eliminates the myriad distractions that tablets provide. There’s no threat of forced retirement either, because the e-reader business is different from televisions or other electronics, where vendors must push newer and better technologies in hopes of raising profit margins. Companies like Amazon and Barnes & Noble aren’t making money on hardware; they’re making money on books purchased through the device, so even as the cost of an e-reader approaches zero, it remains a worthy business. If anything, e-readers are more of a sure bet for e-book sales than tablets, where users can stay entertained with free apps and the Web. (It’s worth noting that most e-reader companies that relied on hardware sales for profits gave up the fight years ago.) The question, then, is whether

I am a very big fan of books. Over the years I have collected a library of close to 2,500 books of all kinds, with 300-plus dedicated to cooking and 200-plus focused on travel. I even have some first editions of Hemingway and Steinbeck favorites. And for decades, books were my travel companions on my many trips to Europe and Asia. In this regard, I am old school. I love the feel of the book and the tactile feel of turning a page. I can spend hours in an old used bookstore seeking out gems for my collection. I even enjoy the musty smell of these bookstores that house thousands of old books. And for many years, I would curl up by my fireplace in the living room and read for hours as I cradle a book in my hands. I pored over its text, and let my imagination run wild as I read the adventures of travel writer Paul Theroux. I read dozens of books on food literature and drooled as I tried to imagine the eating experiences being recorded by M.F.K. Fisher or, my favorite, Calvin Trillin in his Tummy Trilogy. Yet, when electronic books first came out, I embraced them wholeheartedly. In fact, I was one of the first to buy Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader the second it was available. And since then I have owned at least six or seven dedicated e-book readers and use the book apps on my iPad or Kindle Fire HD tablets all the time. Now I admit that when I first started reading books on an e-reader, I felt very guilty about turning my back on my physical books. But once I realized that the words on the pages of my hardcovers were the exact, same words on my e-reader, it made my move to e-books very easy. Interestingly, the main reason for my fast embracement of e-books was mostly related to travel. For 25 years, I would have to carry onto a plane a separate book bag along with my

Until now, the general sentiment has been that Barnes & Noble's 7-inch Nook Tablet is a great option for a low-price Android tablet... if only it didn't cost $50 more than Amazon's 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet. Starting today, there's a new version of the Nook Tablet available for $199, putting it directly in line with the Kindle Fire's $199 price tag.

Michael Kozlowski of Good E-Reader is reporting that Amazon.com plans to open a retail store in the Seattle area in the coming months. The store will supposedly feature Kindle e-readers and tablets as well as other products, and is said to be an experiment to see if a chain of such outlets would make sense. As a long-time Amazon addict–I suspect I give it more of my money than I do any other single merchant–I instinctively like the idea of an Amazon store. (MORE: Amazon Said to Be Opening Its First Brick-and-Mortar Store) I also understand why Amazon itself might like like the idea of such an establishment. Lots of people will order a Kindle over the web, sight unseen, but some folks would prefer to try one in person. And while Kindles are available at a bevy of retailers these days–everywhere from RadioShack to airport shops–Amazon has little or no control over the quality of the salesmanship provided by its retail partners. None of them offer an Apple Store-level shopping experience. Or, really, anything as pleasant as Amazon’s own website. But how should Amazon translate its (mostly) wonderful online experience into a retail environment? Part of Amazon’s online wonderfulness is the phenomenal selection–gazillions of products offered by Amazon itself, and gazillions more from third-party sellers. No store that Amazon is likely to open will try to recreate that endless choice in brick-and-mortar form, and that’s OK. It would be cool, however, if Amazon tried its hand at other sorts of gadgets besides e-readers and tablets. It already several house brands and offers a somewhat random assortment of AmazonBasics products. If there were Amazon HDTVs or Amazon set-top boxes or Amazon phones, I’d consider buying them at an Amazon store. Aggressive pricing is another defining aspect of the Amazon experience. For books, the company usually aggressively undercuts real-world archival Barnes & Noble’s prices, for instance. It even sells Apple products for a bit less than you’ll pay at the Apple Store or Best Buy. It’s unclear whether Amazon plans to

The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library sounds like a good deal, with more than 5,000 Kindle e-books available for free if you have an Amazon Prime subscription. But many of the most popular titles are filler in the form of public domain books, self-help books and video-based workout instructions. Amazon started offering free e-book rentals through Amazon Prime last week, letting members take out one book at a time in one-month increments. Amazon Prime, which also includes free two-day shipping on most retail items and a Netflix-style streaming video service, costs $79 per year. The top six major U.S. book publishers aren’t participating in the subscription program. (MORE: Amazon ‘Prime’ Members Now Get Free Kindle E-Book Rentals) The entire list of free Prime eligible Kindle e-books is now online, as discovered by CNet. After sifting through the top 100 titles, I’ve found that 22 are based on public domain works. In fairness, the rental versions of these books have been abridged by an editor or enhanced with extra features, but the original versions of these classic works—books like Dracula and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland—are downloadable from Project Gutenberg, or directly through a Kindle device without an Amazon Prime subscription. Toward the middle of the top 100 Lending Library titles, I also found some instructional workout e-books with video components—books like “Hotel Room Workout: The Video Guide,” and “Plyometric Workouts at Home.” These videos won’t be viewable on an e-ink Kindle. Out of the 100 most popular Prime-eligible Kindle e-books, I counted 10 that fell into this category. I also counted 18 books that were of an instructional nature, including cookbooks and self-help books (for instance, Angry Birds: Video Game Guide). So out of the 100 most popular books in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, roughly half are novels or literary non-fiction. That’s not to say you won’t find anything worth reading among the Prime eligible free e-books. While sorting through the top 100, I found some gems like Moneyball and Kitchen Confidential. But to find the good stuff, you’ll have to do

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has found that the new Silk browser in Amazon’s forthcoming Kindle Fire tablet, which speeds browsing by routing users’ traffic through Amazon’s cloud servers, does not pose a privacy threat to users. “We are generally satisfied with the privacy design of Silk, and happy that the end user has control over whether to use cloud acceleration,” said EFF technologist Dan Auerback in a statement. The finding couldn’t have come at a better time for Amazon, which was facing some tough questions from Capitol Hill. Last week, Massachusetts Democrat Ed Markey sent Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos a letter demanding to know what the company will do with data collected from Silk users. And at a privacy hearing on Thursday, Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) expressed outrage at the thought of Silk collecting user data. (MORE: Amazon’s Services, Not Pricing, Is Why the Kindle Fire Is Disruptive) “My staff yesterday told me that one of our leading Internet companies, Amazon, is going to create their own server and their own system and they’re going to force everybody that uses Amazon to go through their server and they’re going to collect all this information on each person who does that without that person’s knowledge,” he said. “Enough is enough.” Barton’s staff, however, must have been misinformed. In its investigation, EFF found that Silk users will not be forced to use its split browsing mode. “Cloud acceleration mode is the default setting, but Amazon has assured us it will be easy to turn off on the first page of the browser settings menu,” Auerback said. “When turned off, Silk operates as a normal web browser, sending the requests directly to the web sites you are visiting.” Additionally, Amazon will not intercept any encrypted traffic, so any communications over HTTPS–popular on Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter, among other services–will not be recorded. The EFF did say that as companies create innovations that push more of our data to the cloud, it’s important that laws keep up with the technology, and they advocate an

It’s still more than a month away from release, but the Amazon Kindle Fire is already drawing the wrong kind of attention from a company called Smartphone Technologies. Namely, the kind of attention that involves touchscreens and a patent infringement lawsuit. Smartphone Technologies has made a name for itself by suing Apple, Research in Motion and other well-known companies over its ownership of U.S. Patent #6956562, which centers around touch-sensitive screens. (MORE: Amazon Services, Not Pricing, Is Why the Kindle Fire Is Disruptive) That isn’t the only patent named in the company’s new lawsuit against Amazon, however; there are three others also mentioned, including one owned by Palm for a “System and Method For Displaying and Manipulating Multiple Calendars on a Personal Digital Assistant.” Amazon has not responded to the lawsuit as yet, but judging by the success—or lack thereof—of previous Smartphone Technologies’ patent lawsuits, we can expect a lengthy legal dispute that may, ultimately, be resolved by any of Smartphone Technologies’ earlier patent infringement suits being conclusively settled in the defendants’ favor.
Well there went the Kindle Touch 3G’s appeal straight out the window: Amazon now admits that while its upcoming touch-based Kindle will indeed be 3G-enabled, the places it’ll be allowed to visit along the information superhighway are actually not so super. Where can the Kindle Touch go? Try the Kindle Store, no surprise, and—wait for it—Wikipedia, that fount of immaculate, always-reliable and scholarly information, and encyclopedic repository for whoever your favorite celebrities are dating. (MORE: Amazon Unveils $199 ‘Kindle Fire’ Android Tablet, $99 ‘Kindle Touch’) Amazon unveiled two Kindle Touch models last Wednesday: a $99 Wi-Fi model and a $149 3G alternative. That’s right, for $50 or 33% more, you can have significantly slower “anywhere” access to a fraction of a fraction (of a fraction—keep repeating silently until you’ve not quite infinitely regressed) of the Internet. Chalk it up to browsing’s “experimental” status on the Kindle platform (the Android-based Kindle Fire notwithstanding). Amazon advertises the Kindle Touch 3G with “free 3G wireless,” noting you can “download books anywhere” and that it “works globally.” There’s also a note about “free cloud backup.” But—perhaps misleadingly—the company neglects to mention you’ll be limited to synchronizing books, and fails altogether to mention the Wikipedia restriction. All Amazon says is that while browsing books using its new X-Ray feature, you’ll have access to “more detailed descriptions from Wikipedia and Shelfari, Amazon’s community-powered encyclopedia for book lovers.” Why put these devices on Internet training wheels? Probably because the company expects to sell boatloads when they launch on November 21, and $50 markup or no, they’re not prepared to subsidize all the extra web traffic they’d have to handle if they opened the floodgates. That’s the safe bet anyway. Amazon’s sort-of-kind-of official acknowledgement of the browsing limitation? Here’s what the company wrote a few days ago in response to customer questions about 3G access: We apologize for the confusion. Our new Kindle Touch 3G enables you to connect to the Kindle Store, download books and periodicals, and access Wikipedia – all over 3G or Wi-Fi. Experimental web browsing (outside of

Estimates for how much it costs Amazon to produce a single Kindle Fire tablet have started to roll in and, as CNET reports, the estimates hover between $150 and $250, depending whom you ask. UBM rounds out the low-end, speculating that the $199 Kindle Fire only costs Amazon $150 to cobble together. This is based on UBM’s estimate that the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook tablet costs RIM $170 to build and that the Kindle Fire appears to have similar specs as the PlayBook, while halving the internal memory and cutting out both cameras. (VIDEO: How to Choose a Kindle) On the high end, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster estimates the Kindle Fire to cost Amazon $250, resulting in a $50 loss for each tablet sold. Research firm IHS iSuppli’s estimate falls somewhere in the middle at just shy of $210, which includes component costs of $191.65 along with additional manufacturing expenses making up the rest. Whatever the case, Amazon’s pricing strategy is good for consumers. If the company is indeed making $50 on each tablet, as UBM suggests, that leaves the door wide open for one-day sales between now and the holidays and permanent price drops down the line. Even at IHS iSupply’s estimate of $210, Amazon only needs to sell $10 worth of content to break even—not to mention that those component prices will trend downward in the future. At $250, it’s a bigger gap but, again, nothing that content and falling component prices can’t cover in due time. Aside from just selling digital content—movies, music, electronic books and apps—don’t forget that Amazon sells a mind-boggling selection of tangible goods as well. The company is giving away a free month of its expedited shipping service, Amazon Prime, to Kindle Fire owners in the hopes that they’ll use it to buy stuff from Amazon’s online store. It’s a strategy similar to the razor-razor blade model and the video game console model: break even or lose money on the initial equipment, then make it up with consumables. As UBM’s Jeffrey Brown comments, “The
