In January, Logitech announced that it’s trying to sell off its division that makes Harmony universal remotes. But it’s going out with a bang: the company has announced its highest-end Harmony model to date, plus one aimed at people who don’t realize that they need a universal remote at all. The top-of-the-line model is the Harmony Ultimate, a $350 unit with a 2.4″ color touchscreen along with tactile buttons for standard actions such as changing channels and adjusting the volume. As with all Harmonies, you set it up by telling it what devices you’ve got in your living room — it knows 225,000 of them by name. (This initialization process can now be performed without a PC.) You can set up multiple-device sequences of actions, so that, for instance, one command switches your TV to the right input for your Blu-ray player and starts a movie playing. Logitech Unlike most Harmonies, the Ultimate comes with a little box called the Harmony Hub, which serves as a middleman between the remote and your living-room gear. The Hub communicates with the remote via RF wireless; unlike infrared, it doesn’t require a clear line of site to work, and can sit inside a closed entertainment center. It talks to most consumer-electronics boxes using infrared, but (in a new feature) can also control the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 via Bluetooth. Oh, and the Ultimate can control Philips’ Wi-Fi-enabled Hue lightbulbs, letting you dim the lights when you watch a movie. It’s the first time that a Harmony remote has dabbled in home automation, although the company says that more such features might be on the way. The Ultimate also lets you download iPhone and Android apps that let your phone serve as a remote with features similar to the Ultimate itself. But if that sounds exciting, you might be better off with the Harmony Smart Control, a $129.99 product based the concept of BYOR — bring your own remote. That’s because with it, the app is your primary remote. Logitech Like the Ultimate,

I couldn’t live without an iPad Bluetooth keyboard — but there’s no one wireless iPad Bluetooth keyboard I can’t live without. Actually, I like to try as many of them as possible. And it looks like the next one I’ll be test driving is a new model from Logitech, the Keyboard Folio. The Folio uses a keyboard similar to the one in Logitech’s Ultrathin Keyboard Cover, but builds it into a case which protects both sides of the tablet. (It’s a different design than Logitech’s existing Solar Folio– a keyboard powered by the sun — and also presumably avoids one problem I’ve had with the Ultrathin, which is the tendency of its magnets to refuse to snap snugly enough to the iPad to keep the keyboard from plopping off.) Unfolded, it lets you prop up the iPad at two different viewing angles. Logitech A version of the Keyboard Folio for the full-sized iPad will ship in April for $99.99; a similar one for the iPad Mini (shown at right) will follow in May for $89.99. More thoughts once I’ve had the opportunity to touch one or both for myself. In case you’re curious: the iPad keyboard I’m currently using is Zagg’s ZAGGkeys PROfolio+. Like Logitech’s new Folio, it’s a protective case, and I’m pretty pleased with it overall. But the build quality seems iffy (the covering of mine is coming off in two spots) and while I like the fact that the keyboard is backlit, I wish it weren’t so very easy to accidentally switch on the light when I don’t need it (it’s done with a key to the immediate right of the space bar). It also has a tendency to collapse when I balance it on my lap at certain angles, something which doesn’t happen with Logitech’s Ultrathin. The search for the perfect iPad keyboard goes on.

Poor Mark Evanier is trying to get his Logitech Harmony universal remote to work with his Philips TV. He’s writing up his experiences with Logitech support, and they make for surprisingly entertaining reading. 5:49 PM — Dmitri returns to me and says that he’s sent my case to the Level Two technicians and they can’t take my call now and want to call me tomorrow. I argue a bit about this: Isn’t there a chance one of those guys could talk to me now? Dmitri goes off to check and I’m on hold for a minute or two before he returns and tells me no, it’ll have to be tomorrow. I try to arrange a time for this but Dmitri, who is obviously not on the same continent with me, doesn’t grasp the concept of North American time zones. I keep telling him I’d like that call at 10 AM Pacific Time. He keeps telling me they don’t open until 10 AM Eastern Time. I finally convince him that 1 PM Eastern Time is 10 AM Pacific Time and he says that Ben will phone me at 10 AM. [UPDATE: Ben did indeed call Mark...and solved the problem.]

The most fully-baked thing about Logitech’s Revue Google TV box from last year wasn’t the Google TV part. It was Harmony Link, Logitech’s technology, drawn from its venerable Harmony line of universal remotes, for controlling an entertainment center full of gadgets from one remote. Now Logitech is readying a stand-alone Harmony Link that lets you use an iPad, an iPhone, or an Android phone as a Harmony remote. The setup includes a flying saucer-shaped gizmo that talks to entertainment devices via infrared and iPads and phones via Wi-Fi, plus iOS and Android apps. And it uses the same online configuration and database of 225,000 devices as traditional Harmony remotes to let you configure it for your entertainment setup with minimal fuss. Unlike similar newfangled universal-remote systems such as Peel and Griffin’s Beacon, Harmony Link emphasizes the iPad over smartphones: Its iPad app is more fully-featured, with searchable, browsable TV listings integrated into the user interface so you can abandon your cable company’s endless grid of listings altogether. (For now, the iPhone and Android apps let you control devices, but don’t have the listings.) I haven’t tried Harmony Link for myself yet, but it looked slick when Logitech gave me a sneak peek recently. It’ll cost $99 and Logitech says it’ll be available next month.
Logitech is taking a beating for throwing early support behind Google TV. The company announced that it will cut the price of its Logitech Revue Google TV box to $99, which means each unit will be sold at a loss. And just in case there was any question of whether Google TV was a flop, Logitech offered an embarrassing statistic: The Revue saw more returns than sales last quarter. (MORE: Logitech Revue with Google TV Review) This isn’t the end of Google TV. Google plans to revamp the software this summer with an interface based on Android Honeycomb, with access to the Android Market. But to make Google TV a living room powerhouse, Google and its hardware partners need to learn a few lessons from the first generation’s flop: Google TV set-top boxes must be $100 or less Google can argue all it wants that the services Google TV offers are worth a premium price, but the reality is that Apple TV costs $99 and Roku starts at $59. A $99 Google TV box may be unsustainable for Logitech, but anything significantly costlier will have a hard time proving its worth to consumers who want to augment their existing TV experience. Google TV software needs to be complete Tech companies, and especially Google, have a tendency to ship incomplete hardware these days. While that may fly on the new frontiers of phones and tablets, TV watchers are accustomed to getting their content without much trouble. At launch, Google TV was buggy, it lacked support for Android remote controls and its Netflix app could only stream from users’ instant queues. Whatever features Google promises next time around need to be available right away without serious hiccups. Google needs to make nice with TV networks Soon after Google TV launched, one of its big value propositions—access to the full web in all of its streaming video glory—fell apart. All the major networks blocked Google TV, as did Viacom, for obvious reasons: Google TV circumvented paid television while threatening to become a presence in

Logitech has announced its K750 Wireless Solar Keyboard, due this month for $80. The keyboard measures just 1/3 of an inch thick and "charges itself whenever there’s light." Once fully charged, it’ll work in complete darkness for three months or more. Logitech will launch an application in the middle of November that’ll tell you how much light the keyboard is getting soaking up, so you can make sure to position it accordingly. While $80 may seem a tad steep for a keyboard with solar panels, never having to pay for batteries coupled with a razor thin profile ought to entice plenty of typists.
I’m bullish on Google TV. Bullish. Well, bullish on the concept of Google TV and how it integrates with the current way most people consume television and the way we’ll all consume television in the future. Whether Google TV as a platform ultimately succeeds or fails doesn’t matter as much as the method with which Google has fused TV and the web together. It sets a standard that potential competitors should closely emulate with future products. Setup Google TV is not like Apple TV or Boxee or Roku or any of those boxes that connect to your television set. It does some of the same things that those boxes do, but it does a whole lot more. The standard internet-connected TV box connects to an auxiliary input on your TV and exists separately from however you normally watch TV—TiVo, your cable company’s DVR, over-the-air, etc. Your cable box, for instance, connects to the primary input on your TV and when you want to watch something on your Apple TV, you switch to input two. Google TV is a primary input device. It sits between your cable box and your television set and acts as a layer over the top of however you normally watch TV. This is crucially important and is the fundamental difference between Google TV and everything else that’s out there. Everything. So in my case, Comcast goes into the back of my TiVo box, the HDMI output from my TiVo box goes into the HDMI input on the Logitech Revue, and then the HDMI output on the Logitech Revue goes into the HDMI input on my TV. The end result is a TiVo interface that works just like it normally does and, when I want it, a Google TV interface that I can bring up over the top of TiVo when I want to do something more advanced than TiVo offers. You could literally hook Google TV up in your house and nobody would notice that it’s there. That makes it a great option for households where

Following up on our earlier coverage of Logitech’s plans to bundle a HD video conferencing service into Google TV, we now have the official details. During today’s press conference it was revealed that Logitech’s HD video service Logitech Vid HD would come preinstalled as an Android app (Android Market for Google TV will not launch until 2011) on Revue set-top boxes. The service will work between Google TV-enabled sets, as well as PCs and Macs with the Logitech Vid HD software installed. Calls won’t interrupt your TV viewing, we’re told. The service is free (take that, Cisco!) but you will need to purchase a Revue and separate HD webcam that’s been built specifically for Google TV. When we spoke to Eric Kintz from Logitech earlier he mentioned something about hardware compatibility and what could or couldn’t support certain protocols. But he was on his cell phone and the signal kept cutting out. I’m assuming he was on an iPhone. The new camera has a wide-angle lens and the ability to pan, tilt and zoom. It even includes noise cancellation and stereo audio and will retail for $149.99. The $299.99 Revue bundle includes a keyboard (integrated touch and directional pad), one IR blaster, and an HDMI cable. A separate app for Android and iPhone will also be released. You can also purchase DiNovo Mini controller specific to Revue for $129.99. Dish Network subscribers will be able to purchase the Revue bundle for $179.
Details are scant at the moment but I just had a quick conversation with Logitech’s video business VP and GM, Eric Kintz about Cisco’s video teleconferencing announcement. “We congratulate Cisco on bringing video calling to the living room – it’s a great day for consumers and the video communications industry. We’re excited to introduce our own HD video calling offering for the living room with our Logitech Revue with Google TV announcement later today. We believe consumers want the best and most seamless experience which means HD video calling not only from TV to TV, but also TV to PC or Mac (or vice versa). We also believe consumers will want a free service and one that is integrated into a broader entertainment experience, which is why Logitech is excited to introduce an integrated HD video calling offering with Google TV.” And now it’s official.

Logitech is hoping to woo the gaming community with its new G-series line of high-end peripherals. The company’s press release says that the products are available now through Logitech’s site (some are backordered already) “and will be rolling out soon with major retailers.” There’s the $160 G930 Wireless Gaming Headset, with 7.1 surround sound, memory foam-lined headband, noise canceling microphone, ten-hour rechargeable battery, real-time voice morphing, and three programmable buttons used to launch programs directly from the headset. The $100 G700 Wireless Gaming Mouse features individually sculpted buttons “carefully designed and placed to be easily identifiable by touch,” the ability to assign up to 13 custom keystroke combinations, rechargeable battery, and an included cable that you can attach to the mouse if you don’t trust the wireless connection—it’s also used to recharge the battery. And finally there’s the $120 G510 Gaming Keyboard (it’s not wireless). It’s got a built-in LCD screen that relays text-based stats and information while playing compatible games, backlit keys, built-in USB audio connections for use with analog headsets, 18 programmable keys, multiple key press recognition, and media playback buttons.
Google TV will be here in the fall and hardware partners are hard at work on their own set-top boxes. Logitech’s box has just been officially named “Revue,” though few details beyond the name have been revealed. The idea is that you’ll purchase the Revue box and then use your Android phone or iPhone to run a remote controller app with similar features to Logitech’s line of Harmony universal remotes. It looks like an actual remote control will be included with the box, too, “combining a compact keyboard, remote control, and touchpad.” Logitech’s also planning an HD video conferencing camera that can be used with Google TV as well. While the release date’s been given a loose “fall” timeframe, the price tag has remained much more elusive. It doesn’t appear that Logitech’s box has any internal storage, so assuming it’s little more than a box that provides the user interface and internet connection, I’d venture a guess that it might (should) cost under $50 if they want to sell the things. The fancy remote that’s going to come with the Revue actually sounds like it might add a bit to the price but, who knows, maybe they’ll sell a version without a remote for people with compatible smartphones. Here’s a quick video explaining Google TV, if you’re interested: via AndroidCentral.com More on Techland: Google Brings The Web To TV With Google TV Google’s Rumored Music Store and Why It Just Might Work Apple Working on Cloud Based AppleTV With $99 Price Tag?

The Internet is coming to a TV near you. Google unveiled a new platform today called Google TV at their developer conference in San Francisco that it says “will change the future of television.” Google’s move into the living room should come as no surprise given the amount of time we all spend consuming video through our mobile phone or computer. Google TV brings everything you love about the Web onto your TV. (More on Techland: Poll: Are you Gaga over Google TV?) Sounds familiar, right? Google admits that it’s not the first to enter a space where many have failed to mash together the Internet and television. But the integration of Android and the Chrome browser are what set Google TV apart from others. Google TV will be built into televisions and available through companion set-top boxes and Blu-ray players from the likes of Sony and Logitech this fall. Logitech has been working with Google on GTV for 12 months, says Eric Kintz, VP & GM of Logitech’s video business group. Logitech will offer what they call a “companion” set-top box that enables the Google TV software to run on existing television sets as well as new Harmony remote bundles that have integrated Google TV shortcuts. Logitech’s companion set-top box will also enable video calling and what Logitech’s VP of products Junien Labrousse calls “social tv.” They also plan to release a Harmony app for the Android and iPhone platform to work with Google TV.

The LA Times is reporting that Google will unveil their Internet TV tomorrow at the I/O conference in San Francisco. It’s unclear what the service will entail but Sony, Intel and Logitech are expected to join Google on stage to announce Smart TV. Like any Google product, Smart TV is probably half cooked and Google will release dev tools for others to round out the service before launch. There’s no word on an exact timeline for Smart TV enabled products (TVs, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes), but we’ll probably hear more about it tomorrow during Day 2 of I/O. Is this a big deal? Intel thinks so. In a call with analysts last week Intel CEO Paul Otellini had this to say, “The revolution we’re about to go through is the biggest single change in television since it went color.” So Intel will provide the chips for Sony’s TVs, but what the heck is Logitech’s role? Will it be any different than services offered by Verizon FiOS (Facebook and Twitter widgets) or those TVs that come equipped with Yahoo! widgets?

On Friday, Logitech pushed out the Touch Mouse app that turns your iPhone and/or iPod Touch into – you guessed it – a mouse that works over the network. (I wonder what this will be like on the iPad.) The app is free (iTunes link) and you’re going to have to download the Touch Mouse Server software (link to Logitech), but it’s pretty neat, no? The app more or less turns your iPhone into a Magic Mouse, I think. I’ll test it out when I get home. Here’s a list of supported features: • Multi-touch trackpad with the option for two or three mouse buttons • Two-finger scrolling • Keyboard with Control, Alt, Command/Windows keys • On-screen text display while typing • Show or hide the keyboard at any time • Trackpad and keyboard are available in landscape and portrait modes

I might actually buy this thing. Logitech’s Speaker Lapdesk N700 (USB powered) has a built-in fan to keep your crotch cool (unlike mine at the moment since I’m in the middle seat in coach on a Delta flight) and embedded speakers (two 2-inch speakers) to get your nether regions jumpin’. Oh, and it has a wide padded base! Get one next month for $80. European crotches will be privy to one in March.

There’s a rumor going around that Logitech is making a UMD add-on accessory for the PSPGo. It’s a pretty dumb rumor. Rather than circulating rumors, I’ve decided to share Penny Arcade’s latest webcomic with you. It sums up the situation nicely. I excluded the last panel in the hopes that those of you who don’t read Penny Arcade will hop on over to their sandbox to catch the rest. (I hope Tycho and Gabe are okay with that.) Go now. It’s worth it.
