Announced in October, Apple’s 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro carried a starting price of $1,700. Apple has now cut that to $1,500. The high-end model now costs $1,700 and includes a faster processor. The 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro models, announced in June, have gotten processor upgrades as well, but no price cuts. The price of the high-end 13-inch MacBook Air has been lowered to $1,400, too. Per Apple: The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now starts at $1,499 for 128GB of flash, and $1,699 for a new 2.6 GHz processor and 256GB of flash. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now features a faster 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, and the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook comes with a new 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of memory. Apple today also announced that the 13-inch MacBook Air with 256GB of flash has a new lower price of $1,399.
A much slimmer iPad, an iPad Mini with a Retina display and an iPhone with a built-in fingerprint reader could all be on tap for 2013, according to one industry analyst. As MacRumors reports, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has published a research report that tries to predict Apple‘s entire 2013 product lineup. Although analysts tend to have terrible track records with Apple rumors, Kuo is a notable exception. Let’s do a quick look at some of his past forecasts: Kuo’s January 2011 predictions about the iPad 2, including the dual-core processor, camera specs and screen resolution turned out mostly accurate. (He was off by 0.2 GHz on the clock speed of the A5 chip.) Apple’s iPhone 5 achieved a thickness of under 8 mm, thanks to in-cell touch technology and the use of a metal back plate instead of glass, just as Kuo predicted five months before launch. As Kuo expected, Apple discontinued the 17-inch MacBook Pro last year and redesigned its iMacs, but without Retina displays. That’s a pretty good track record. So let’s hear out Kuo’s predictions for 2013: The iPhone 5S will be similar to its predecessor, but with a faster processor, a better camera with smart LED flash and a fingerprint reader built into the home button, which would reduce the need for passwords everywhere. Keep in mind that Apple acquired AuthenTec, a maker of fingerprint sensor technology, last year. A cheaper iPhone for prepaid and emerging markets–a popular rumor these days–would be a lot like the iPhone 5, but with a plastic enclosure, available in six colors. The next iPad will be considerably slimmer and lighter. That’d make sense given that Apple had to add bulk to its third-generation iPad to accommodate a Retina display. Kuo expects the iPad Mini to get a Retina display as well this year. Non-Retina display MacBook Pros will meet their maker this year, as Apple moves to an all-Retina lineup at lower prices than before. The MacBook Air line won’t get Retina displays this year, Kuo believes. Their main improvement will be

We’ve heard a lot of analyst and supply chain scuttlebutt over the past year about the MacBook Pro folding into the MacBook Air lineup, or the MacBook Air outright supplanting the entire MacBook spread. Power-wise, the Air’s already closing in, packing considerable power under the hood—enough to get me to switch one for the other. I traded my souped-up 13-inch MacBook Pro (2010) for an even more powerful 11-inch MacBook Air a few months ago, swapping the Pro’s poky Core 2 Duo processor for a 1.6GHz Intel i5 capable of ramping up to 2.3GHz in turbo boost mode. That, and the solid state drives in the Air absolutely destroy the plodding spindle-driven default ones in the Pro. The only thing I’m losing, compared with a 15-inch Pro, is screen real estate: 1366 x 768 pixels on 11 inches versus the Pro’s 1440 x 900 on 15. (MORE: Apple’s Hush-Hush MacBook Pro Refresh) Apple quietly refreshed the MacBook Pro just last week, bumping up the i5 and i7 processors in the 13-, 15- and 17-inch models by a few hundred megahertz each, but the Pro’s chunkier, heavier aluminum frame remained untouched. It sounds like that could soon change, as work on an ultra-thin 15-inch Mac is rumored to be wrapping up. Japanese blog Macotakara cites a July MacRumors story about Apple “finishing up work” on an ultra-thin 15-inch Mac laptop, then adds that, according to an “asian source,” Apple has already completed development of a 15-inch MacBook Air LCD and will be adding it to the MacBook Air lineup. We’re talking rumors built on rumors, mind you, but it’s not inconceivable, and actually makes a lot of sense. A 15-inch frame that shares the Air’s blade-like tapering and absent optical drive would still be slightly thicker, possibly big enough to accommodate the faster i5 and i7 CPUs and perhaps even one of AMD’s dedicated graphics cards, like the current Pro’s AMD Radeon HD 6490M. The Radeon HD 6490M would be a boon to ultra-mobile 3D artists, as well as gamers flipping over

No, Apple’s surprise MacBook Pro updates this weekend don’t involve a MacBook Air-like tapered chassis or major graphics manufacturer rethink, in which, say, Nvidia reclaims its spot from rival AMD. Instead, Apple’s simply nipped and tucked its pro-grade laptop lineup, tweaking speed, video and storage prowess across its 13-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch models. What’s more, the updates magically appeared on Apple’s website this weekend—no pomp, no circumstance. Let’s do this highest to lowest end: That’s right, they still sell a 17-inch model for $2,499. I’d almost forgotten about that. Crazier still: It weighs just 6.6 pounds (the lightest 11-inch MacBook Air still weighs nearly 2.4 pounds). The Intel i7 processor maximum’s been modestly bumped from 2.2 GHz to 2.4 GHz, with a maximum turbo frequency of 2.93 GHz, but the video’s been upgraded from the AMD Radeon HD 6750M to a Radeon HD 6770M, the same chip with core, shader and memory speeds notably up-clocked, assuming Apple’s running at AMD’s guidelines speeds. (MORE: A Super Thin 15-inch MacBook Pro Means Apple’s Going Cloud or Bust) Step down to the mid-grade $1,799 15-inch MacBook Pro and you’ll enjoy a slightly faster 2.2 GHz i7 processor, up from 2 GHz. The graphics processor’s likewise been upgraded from an AMD Radeon HD 6490M with 256 MB to a Radeon HD 6750M with 512 MB. That’s a pretty radical upgrade, compared to the 17-inch model, moving from an “entry level” graphics card to a “fast middle class” part, according to Notebook Check. Last up, the $1,199 13-inch entry-level MacBook Pro, whose i5 processor’s gone up a tick from 2.3 GHz to 2.4 GHz. It’s also enjoyed a storage upgrade from 320 GB to 500 GB. If you’d rather have a 2.8 GHz i5 processor and 750 GB hard drive, there’s the $1,499 13-inch MacBook Pro, up from 2.7 GHz and 500 GB specs respectively. If you’d prefer to tweak those specs, Apple’s offering the usual modest custom options. The 15- and 17-inch models support down-stepping to 200 MHz slower processors, as well as an optional higher-end 2.5

After rolling out new models in February, Apple is reportedly planning a marginal speed bump to its line of MacBook Pro notebooks before the end of the year. That’s according to a rumor from Apple Insider, which quotes not the standard “people familiar with the plans” but “people with proven insight into Apple’s future product plans.” In other words, take this news with a grain of salt, as with all rumors, but maybe make this particular salt grain a bit coarser and larger than normal. Perhaps a grain of sea salt if you’ve got one handy. (MORE: New Lighter, Faster MacBook Pros Have Landed) Anyhoo, here’s the supposed skinny: “Word of the new models comes just one week after Intel quietly refreshed its Sandy Bridge lineup of processors, adding four new Core i7 chips suited for adoption by the MacBook Pro in addition to slashing prices on some other chips, while phasing out a handful of others. In particular, the chipmaker introduced new 2.4GHz, 2.5GHz and 2.7GHz quad-core Core i7 processors that could replace the 2.0GHz, 2.2GHz and 2.3GHz versions offered in the current 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros, in addition to a 2.8GHz dual-core Core i7 that could serve as an upgrade path for the current 2.7GHz 13-inch MacBook Pro. As for the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, Intel continues to list a couple of Core i5 chips at speeds of 2.5GHz to 2.6GHz that Apple could elect to use to bump 2.3GHz Core i5 MacBook Pro for little to no cost increase.” As for timing, these mysterious product-plan-insight people say that the new models may be introduced as early as the end of the month. Hmmm, if only Apple had something else to announce soon. Something smaller and capable of making phone calls and whatnot. My, wouldn’t that be convenient to announce everything at the same event sometime in the not-too-distant future?
Apple made a 3G-enabled MacBook Pro? Who knew! And did you know someone got their hands on one and listed it on eBay earlier this month, where it almost sold for a whopping $70,000? Apple put the kibosh on that one, of course, contacting eBay to have the auction liquidated. And now they’re after North Carolina resident Carl Frega to repossess the thing. It looks like an older-style 15-inch MacBook Pro, circa 2007, and Frega bumped into it on Craigslist, where he apparently thought he was buying something that’d serve as spare parts for his repair biz. When he got it, however, he noticed a slide-up antenna along the right-hand side of the screen and something that looks an awful lot like a SIM-card slot. It also had an oddly red-colored circuit board. According to AppleInsider, “Red circuit boards and the lack of an EMC Number serve as evidence that the machine is a pre-production prototype.” (LIST: Best Inventions of 2008) So a 3G MacBook Pro. Not that the notion’s far out. Tablets like the iPad and Amazon’s Kindle have inbuilt 3G, after all, and anyone who’s used a 3G USB modem or tethered their 3G (or faster) mobile phone to a laptop knows how this works. Apple was probably fiddling with the idea years ago, before it realized most folks won’t crack open a laptop unless they’re near a wireless hotspot, or if they are somewhere remote, tethering works as well (that is, if you can’t simply do what you need to direct on your phone in the first place). Patent watchers will note Apple filed a patent for precisely this sort of device in April 2008: Electronic devices may be provided with sensors for determining the presence and position of extendable and removable antennas. The antennas may extend by rotating about an axis, by reciprocating along their length, or by flexing from a retracted position to an extended position… The electronic device may determine the extent to which an antenna has been extended using signals from the sensors.
A bit of Apple news for you this morning: MacRumors is reporting that Apple is late-stage testing a new 15-inch, ultra-thin laptop with features similar to the MacBook Air; TUAW is betting that it’s going to be a sveltely redesigned MacBook Pro. Currently, MacBook Airs are available in 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch sizes with a starting price point of $999. The new 15-inch laptop is assumed to be ditching optical drives (like CDs) and traditional hard drives in favor of integrated solid-state drives (SSDs), which have allowed the Airs to achieve their brand of tapered thinness and portability. (MORE: A Brief History of the Computer) It’s no secret that as technology becomes more powerful, it inevitably shrinks to become more compact. Recently I dug out my old third-generation iPod, which held a tiny 10GB worth of data and an unfamiliar amount of heft. It was basically a brick. Apple’s laptop lines will be treated no different: The Air’s design features have long been expected to translate over to Apple’s Pro line, which is currently marketed as the company’s portable workstation. But in shedding the optical drive from all their laptop lines, it essentially means Apple’s going all in on the cloud. MacRumors stated, “Apple has had no problem leaving physical media behind,” and they’re right. It makes sense: When Apple announced their coming iCloud just last month (doesn’t it feel like an eternity ago?), they outlined the strategy behind all upcoming hardware from the iPod on up. Harry McCracken’s posited that the cloud may just replace all physical storage in the near future, which, if it isn’t indicated in the maybe-release of this 15-incher this holiday season, will come soon enough. The cloud’s already setting cornerstones for hardware design—such as Google’s Chromebooks—but will consumers be comfortable moving their data to the cloud? Apple and Google certainly think so. So do other parties like Intel with their optical drive-less Ultrabooks. Apple and other companies are hedging their bets on the cloud, and if this 15-incher comes out as speculated, it’ll be combining form

Oops, we screwed up—that’s the gist of 9to5Mac‘s story correction this morning. The Apple rumor-gathering tech blog admits it bungled both its super-secret part number pre-read as well as the timing of Apple’s Mac Pro refresh. Sorry Mac Pro fans, looks like you’ll have to wait until later this month, or early next. Instead? Looks like we’re getting a new white MacBook with a faster processor and Intel’s Thunderbolt media port slapped on the side. (LIST: Apple iPad 2 – 15 Fantastic Gadgets for Father’s Day) The white MacBook, which sports a unibody polycarbonate (in other words, plastic) frame, was last updated in mid-2010. It currently sports a 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy screen (1280 by 800 pixel resolution, just like the 13-inch MacBook Pro), 2GB of system memory (expandable to 8GB), a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo and Nvidia’s GeForce 320M graphics card with 256MB video memory. What’s likely in the new white MacBook? Thunderbolt, of course. Probably a Sandy Bridge processor of some sort. Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro sports a 2.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, so it’s reasonable to suspect a dual-core equivalent, maybe clocked at 2.0 or 2.2 GHz. We’ll probably also see a shift to the slower Intel HD Graphics 3000 or AMD Radeon 6000M series video card—a real bummer for older Nvidia GeForce 320M MacBook owners (the latter’s the reason I skipped Apple’s last MacBook Pro refresh in February 2011). And who knows, perhaps Apple will finally drop the price on this thing. $999 still seems like $100-$200 too much for what’s essentially a cheapo plastic version of the in-every-way-superior only $200 pricier 13-inch MacBook Pro. If you’re instead looking for something like a Mac Mini, it looks like that’s happening, too, with three new models appearing “soon” and classified “best,” “better,” and “ultimate.” No word on what they’ll include, though faster latest-family processors are a given. And don’t forget Apple’s ballyhooed MacBook Air update, still very much on track, though whether any of this stuff manifests at OS X Lion’s digital-exclusive launch (supposedly tomorrow)
