Forget Street View. Now when I’m bored I can pretend I’m working in the Conde Nast cafeteria. Or at the Googleplex. Last May, Google announced that they would start taking interior views of stores. But why? It turns out that some of these images are now making their way online as part of a new feature showcased on Google Maps. Street View is finally going indoors (but not before I clean my apartment). (MORE: Ask Techland: How Can I Use Google Maps to Find My Next Apartment?) Don’t worry, privacy buffs. There are a couple steps before Google can get photo-happy. To even begin the process, store owners first have to submit an application to Google. The company will then pick which stores get featured, and then a Google-certified photographer will drop by. So much for showing off that swanky new couch in the lounge right away. Photos taken for the feature are owned by Google, so even if you object to an unflattering photo, they still have the right to keep one up (you were the one that submitted the application, weren’t you?). (MORE: Google Maps: An Invasion of Privacy?) According to VentureBeat, thousands of businesses have already worked with Google to get these shots put together, though some people have raised concerns that burglars could use the feature to glean information about a business before robbing it, a la Ocean’s Eleven. And as much as I’m up for another Clooney and Co. cinematic extravaganza, that’s just not cool. Erica Ho is a reporter at TIME. Find her on Twitter at @ericamho and Google+.
Google announced yesterday that it has added a new layer to Google Maps. Now, on top of seeing satellite images and street maps, users can see the weather all over the world as well. Clicking on a weather icon on the map will also show a four-day forecast, humidity and wind speed with more options to see hourly or 10-day forecasts from The Weather Channel. (PHOTOS: Top 10 Google Earth Finds) The service is offered in both Fahrenheit and Celsius and wind speeds in miles and kilometers per hour. When zoomed out enough, Google uses satellite imaging to show cloud cover, which can also be turned off individually while keeping the weather capability on.
If you’re going to risk towing 7 million tons of ice across the Atlantic Ocean to quench the thirst of drought-stricken communities, you better have a plan. Enterprising engineer Georges Mougin, 86, is using digital imaging to map the best possible routes to get the massive freshwater deposits 3,400 miles from Newfoundland to the thirsty people of the Canary Islands in Spain, who currently rely on desalinization to handle water shortages. At 7 million tons, an iceberg can theoretically meet the water consumption needs of 35,000 people per year. (PHOTOS: A Greenland Odyssey) Developed by Dassault Systems, the 3D mapping technology accounts for a host of external factors while answering three major questions: 1. Can they anticipate how much the iceberg will melt in transit? 2. Can the iceberg even be towed from Newfoundland to the Canary Islands? 3. What happens if the iceberg breaks up? Engineers working on the project have designed a special insulating textile to help keep the icebergs from melting under the sun’s rays. The special fabric would be unfurled underwater, theoretically ensuring that at least 4.3 tons make it to its destination. The frozen landmasses are currently an untapped resource for fresh water, with some 300 to 500 billion tons of iceberg released yearly. (PHOTOS: Giant Vanishing Ice) There are, of course, a host of external factors that could prove detrimental to the project, but the team is making the best of predictive technologies to make sure their journey proves fruitful. Ideal icebergs will be selected using radiosounding to eliminate structures prone to fracturing, and ocean currents will be used to optimize floatation and trip time. Tack on costs like fuel, crew and equipment, and each journey runs around $9.8 million. It’s a noble undertaking and, if successful, can possibly even be implemented in drought-stricken communities like Morocco, Namibia in Africa, western and south Australia, Chile and more. You can watch how the simulation technology works here. READ MORE ON TIME.COM: Just Thaw And Serve Chris Gayomali is a reporter at TIME.
Have you seen these new 3D city maps from Nokia’s Ovi Maps service? They’re pretty amazing. 20 global cities have been recreated in astonishing photorealistic 3D. These are not satellite images, nor are they traditional maps. They’re something different. Nokia didn’t do all the work in-house. They bought the technology from Swedish image technology company C3. They build their 3D models from extremely high-res photography combined with great geographical precision. The exact position of every pixel photographed is worked out by C3′s flying eye in-a-box. The kit is small enough (and smart enough) to be fitted to pretty much any aircraft you can think of. That makes it easy to contract out the aerial survey work to third parties, and concentrate on crunching the data back at HQ. You don’t have to have a Nokia phone to try it out. Run along to maps.ovi.com/3d and you can play with it yourself (note: you’ll probably be asked to install a browser plug-in first). I just took a tour of New York and the imagery really is pretty good. It only takes you so far, though, without the slick all-the-way-down-to-the-ground zooming that you get in Google Maps. Then again, this is just a beta phase. More cities, and more of the stuff that lies between them, are hopefully on the way.

If you’ve ever used a traffic map on a smartphone to find the best way home, you know that it can be pretty unreliable. Road conditions are always changing, and a green line in Google Maps can quickly turn to red, signaling massive congestion. Enter IBM, which is starting a research project to make commuting easier. The so-called Smarter Traveler project aims to give you the shortest commute possible by predicting traffic before it happens. As VentureBeat explains, IBM’s initiative combines existing traffic data from road sensors with users’ individual travel histories, gathered from GPS data. Based on this data, a prediction model determines the best route to take and the estimated travel time. Before the commute begins, users can get e-mails and text messages alerting them to potential traffic jams. As a Los Angeles resident, this sounds like something I want right now. But IBM is only testing the project in the San Francisco Bay Area at the moment, with help from the California Department of Transportation and UC Berkeley. Eventually, the project will become a smartphone app, available to all. Which begs the question: What happens when the prediction model sends everyone along the same alternative route?

Quilting for Data: How Google Gets Information from Inside People’s Heads

Data. Google wants it, and is good at getting it. And that’s fine and dandy when the data they need is already online, because they can send the Googlebot scurrying along to index everything it finds. But what about the data that isn’t online? Google’s cameras-on-cars collected data for Google Maps, but even they can’t drive everywhere, and can’t grok the essential knowledge about what it is they’re photographing. Sometimes, the data you need is inside people’s heads. All you need is a way to extract it. Google’s solution is a modern alternative to the quilting bee (as ReadWriteWeb puts it) or the Tupperware party (as British children of the 1970s will remember well). In this case, the search company asked women in Nairobi, Kenya, to join a “mapping party”. They were given some food, something to drink, a laptop, and plenty of bandwidth. Google already has the basic maps. The women provide their knowledge and experience of the local area. They know where real life happens, and they can mark the real world on top of Google’s maps of the area. The data’s out there. Sometimes you just have to think a little more laterally to get hold of it. Which is something else Google is good at.

Microsoft has added a useful feature to its Bing Maps service: mall maps. If you’ve ever been stuck in a mall and tried to find one of those map kiosks but your wife is like, “Don’t wander off, I’ll only be a minute,” and you’re like, “Can I at least go to Starbucks?” and she’s like, “You know you’ll get sidetracked and go into every electronics store between here and Starbucks,” and you’re like, “Me wandering into electronics stores is the reason I got a job as a technology blogger,” and she just looks at you until you give up, you’re probably thinking that mall maps are a good idea. Maybe it’s just me. Know what would be an even better idea? If the mall maps were available on the mobile version of Bing Maps. Like the Bing Maps app that comes with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 handsets, for instance. You’d be able to—get this—look at the mall map on your phone while you’re inside the mall! As of now, mall maps are only available via desktop browsers. The feature is still being rolled out, so it’s almost certain that it’ll eventually find its way onto mobile handsets. There are currently a handful of malls in the Seattle area, two in New York, and one in Massachusetts available, with new malls to be added “regularly” according to Microsoft.
The last Halo game by Bungie just keep breaking records. First, it generated $200 million in sales in its first day, rivaling the best movie releases of 2010, with 31,000,000 Games have been played during its first full week. And now comes news that the month-old sci-fi first-person shooter’s racked up more 3.3 million in sales since launch, via a tweet from Aaron Greenberg, Chief of Staff for Interactive Entertainment Business. Bungie–the development studio that originated the series–also announced that they’ll be rolling out new multiplayer map packs in about a month’s time. In the Noble Map Pack, players will get three new locales to battle it out in, for 800 Microsoft Points ($10). The DLC will also contain new Achievements worth 250 points, so you can buff your stats even more. The official description of the maps follows: Tempest – “Though we may never fully understand these devices, it is not our nature to leave ancient stones unturned.” This abandoned shoreline facility bends both sea and sky to an unnatural purpose, but the ground itself has quickly become another all too familiar battlefield. Though the two opposing symmetrical bases may never reveal their ancient purpose, both now offer makeshift shelter and access to strategic routes perfectly suited for small and large scale skirmishes alike. Tempest supports 8 – 16 players and offers a variety of modes including Free for All, Team Slayer, Team Objective and Big Team Battle. Tempest also provides players with a huge Forge palette, allowing them to create new custom map variants that can be shared with the community-at-large. Anchor 9 – “Orbital dockyards provide rapid refueling and repairs for a variety of UNSC vessels.”Within the confines of this low orbit dry-dock, UNSC craft undergo rapid repair and rearmament in support of the enduring war effort. But for the small squads of infantry who now fight over the mirrored interior hallways and open central hangar bay, this platform no longer provides any safe harbor – whether the close quarters combat is occurring inside or out of its
