Google Wallet is an app that gives smartphone owners the ability to “make your phone your wallet”—at least if you own Sprint’s Nexus S 4G, the only NFC-enabled Android phone available for the service’s limited launch here in the U.S. (MORE: Google Wallet is Coming: Don’t Be Afraid) The system works by first attaching your Citi Mastercard or Google Debit Card (which you can sync to a bank account) to the app. You’ll then be able to tap your card on a PayPass-enabled terminal to transfer money—after setting safeguards like a PIN number and a spending limit, of course. CNET points out that in addition to NFC payment features you’ll be able to store things like “gift cards from participating merchants” and loyalty cards for businesses you shop at most frequently. According to the Google Wallet microsite, companies like Subway, Jamba Juice, Radioshack, Foot Locker, Bloomingdale’s, Walgreens and more are already on board with the program. Google Wallet was announced back in May and was originally anticipated to launch at some point this summer. TechCrunch points out that an announcement today would make sense before the company’s next flagship Android phone launches next month: the Nexus Prime. We’ll keep you updated as the story progresses, but until then, check out the Google Wallet teaser posted last month starring Seinfeld‘s George Costanza: Read more about Google Wallet here.
Verizon Wireless is teaming up with mobile transaction service Payfone to bring a new mobile payment system to customers. The service will work across smartphones, tablets and PCs, and will charge purchases to participating customers’ Verizon statements or through their usual bank accounts, supplementing a partnership with mobile wallet service Isis to bring cashless transactions to the masses. “We approach the mobile payments arena from a customer’s perspective,” says Verizon Wireless marketing vice president Greg Haller in a press release. “As we move forward, the most important goals will be security, privacy and simplicity. Through our relationship with Payfone, we will be able to quickly offer value to our customers by offering them greater choice and a simple, safe and secure purchasing experience when shopping online from their smartphones, tablets and PCs.” (More on TIME.com: The Perils of Mobile Payments) Payfone was founded in 2008 and has seen backing from companies such as American Express, BlackBerry Partners Fund and more. Their goal, aside from creating a one-click payment platform, is to provide safe and secure transactions for customers on the go. “We tie the SIM card, device ID and location to each account, so when a mobile number is used on a different phone or in a different location – we know,” says the company’s website. The announcement reflects the latest in a trend among wireless carriers to usher customers into a new wallet-less era where transactions are carried out electronically. Late last month, Google unveiled their own Android app, Google Wallet, which promises a lot of the same payment functionality while syncing their newly rolled-out Google Offers system to Citibank checking accounts. Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are also building steam in the mobile payment space. (More on TIME.com: Mobile Payments Are Coming — But When?) While combining phone and wallet to consolidate the amount of daily baggage a person lugs around is an admirable undertaking, the keys to getting these initiatives to actually work will be A) to build a secure and reliable infrastructure for transactions, and B)

As rumored, Google has officially announced its new mobile payment system. The platform is called “Google Wallet” and is a joint venture between Google, MasterCard, Sprint and security company First Data. The system is currently available on just a single phone—the Nexus S 4G from Sprint—and works with MasterCard’s “PayPass” tap-to-pay kiosks in New York and San Francisco. “We are just getting started. This will take a while to come to fruition,” said a Google rep during a demonstration in New York today. How It Works Google Wallet will live as an app on the Nexus S smartphone. When you first launch the app, you’ll be asked to attach your Google Wallet to your Google account and then you’ll enter your credit card information. Initially, the system supports the Citi MasterCard and a Google debit card that can have funds added to it from any other credit card. When you add your Citi MasterCard, Citi verifies the card with First Data, which then “provisions” the card (gives it the okay) to be used by your phone. As for retail transactions, provided the store you’re shopping at has a PayPass-enabled terminal, you’ll be able to tap your phone against the terminal to have the money withdrawn from your account. Security On the software side, your phone will have to have its screen manually unlocked, the Google Wallet app will have to be opened, you’ll have to enter a PIN number and you’ll be able to set a spending limit. For instance, transactions over $100 can be verified with you via text messages or e-mails first. The credit card data itself is encrypted and your credit card number is never fully displayed on your phone’s screen. (See Also: Google Wallet Is Coming. Don’t Be Afraid.) On the hardware side, the near-field communications (NFC) chip used in the phone is the same type of smartcard chip used for passports and tap-to-pay credit cards. The chip will self-destruct if it’s physically tampered with, should someone attempt to crack open your phone and extract it.

Bloomberg is reporting that Google and Sprint will be launching a contact-less payment system this Thursday based on near-field communication, or NFC, technology. Google’s Nexus S 4G handset that’s available from Sprint already has NFC technology built into it, so most of the heavy lifting needs to be done on the retail side with NFC-equipped point-of-sale terminals. Bloomberg contends that Google may roll out the new payment service in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C. at first, according to a few of its sources. Google’s certainly rolling something out in New York on Thursday, as I’ve been invited by Google to attend a “partner event to experience our latest innovations,” at noon. When I pressed Google’s PR rep to tell me—off the record—what the event was about to see if it’d be worth my while to travel all the way from Boston to attend, I was told—besides, “No.”—that, “It’s a fairly prominent announcement, for what it’s worth, although I’m sure you hear that daily.” And that—my friends—is a refreshing response from someone in PR.
Intuit’s mobile payment service, GoPayment, which allows users to accept credit card payments on their smart phones, is trying to swipe its way back into the spotlight this week by going “freemium.” GoPayment is a downloadable mobile app that works in conjunction with a credit card reader to allow small businesses to accept credit card transactions via their smart phones. The service makes it cheap and easy for anyone from a vendor at a farmer’s market to a babysitter to a plumber to accept plastic on the go. By using a service like GoPayment, small businesses can give their customers the option of paying by card without having to invoice the payment or incur the hefty fees that usually come with accepting cards. So here’s the deal: in an effort to hamper fledgling competition from the likes of Square, PayPal and others, GoPayment is offering a free credit-card reader and no monthly fees for those who sign up by mid-February. The offer is actually more beneficial to businesses who don’t process a high volume of credit cards, since the company has slightly altered its rates in order to compensate for the lack of a monthly fee. This means that, as appealing as it sounds, the new deal isn’t right for everyone. And if you are a small business accepting a lot of credit cards, you may want to stick with the monthly fees plan. So how do the rates stack up to Square? The answer is that they’re about the same. But aside from the fees, there are a few key differences. While neither company supports absolutely every phone, GoPayment does boast compatibility with a wider variety of phones (like the BlackBerry). Although Square is well-known as the sleek device created by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, it had some serious security and hardware issues last summer. And while it appears that they’ve been resolved, these were some crucial flubs that may permanently cripple the startup, or at least lose some consumer trust.
Launched just three weeks back, version 2.0 of Paypal’s iPhone app has already been downloaded more than a million times, cementing the massive micropayment platform as the leading player in the mobile payment space. The press around the app didn’t hurt one bit. The latest version of Paypal’s app made deeper use of the iPhone’s functionality, letting you “bump” iPhones to settle a debt. Out at dinner and want to split the tab? Just click iPhones together and the app automatically exchanges payment information. If that’s not dead simple enough to understand, Paypal produced a cheeky video to explain the concept: Mobile payments is a burgeoning industry, with estimates placing the number of mobile payment users at some 75 million by the end of 2009. But there’s a big focus this year on making the process as frictionless as possible. A company dubbed Vendmo goes a step beyond Paypal in that it doesn’t even require you to get permission to debit your friend’s account, so long as he indicates he trusts you in advance. Zong lets you make payments using your mobile phone number (albeit taking a hefty cut in fees). But as flashy (and odd) as some of the slate of new micropayment providers are, Paypal comes into the game with a huge advantage. The service already has more than 150 million users, transferring $2 million around every hour. There’s also no fees for person-to-person transactions beneath a certain level, a huge advantage for the casual user. If the company can keep on the forefront with innovations like their new app, there’s little indication any of the newbies can threaten their position.
