Until recently, Libyan rebel had resorted to waving flags in order to communicate with each other in their fight against Muammar Gaddafi. Green flags signaled an advance, yellow flags signaled a retreat. A rebel commander told the Wall Street Journal that Gaddafi “forced us back to the stone age.” Libya’s cellphone network is under the control of one of Gaddafi’s sons, and all calls are routed through the capital city of Tripoli where they can be monitored and controlled by intelligence agents. But in early March, Libyan telecom executive Ousama Abushagur hatched a plan—drawn up on a napkin, no less—to split a section of the country’s cellphone network off so that calls could be made without being routed through Tripoli first. After Abushagur’s request for the parts needed to integrate with Libya’s network was turned down by Huawei, which built Libya’s existing cellphone infrastructure, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar gave Abushagur the “several million dollars of telecommunications equipment” he needed to build his rogue network and he set off for rebel-occupied Benghazi. Abushagur’s team then joined forces with Benghazi engineers and “fused the new equipment into the existing cellphone network, creating an independent data and routing system free from Tripoli’s command,” according to the Wall Street Journal report. Once the new network had been established, Abushagur’s team was able to get its hands on the database of phone numbers that had previously been routed through the system in Tripoli and re-route them through the new system, called “Free Libyana.” Calls are now handled via a satellite controlled by a company called Etisalat based in the United Arab Emirates. The rebel phone network has been up and running since April 2nd and currently works for free domestic calling throughout much of eastern Libya.
George Lucas, if you’re reading, there’s a good reason why Han would have shot first: because he, like German laser hacker AnselmoFanZero, knew that lasers are very dangerous things capable of zapping holes through metal, plastic, and green dudes called Greedo. What you see above is the result of 70 hours work. Its maker told Hacked Gadgets that the aim was to “create a handheld device as compact as possible. It’s 320mm long and weighs about 2 pounds.” This original device has already been sold, but the man who built it is happy to take orders. That’s kind of inspiring and kind of terrifying at the same time; you do not want to be on the wrong end of one of these things without protective eyewear. The only thing that’s missing is an authentic PEW PEW PEW sound when you press the trigger, but that is surely only a small upgrade – or at the very least, an iPhone app – away. Joking aside, be warned: lasers are capable of doing serious damage to your eyes and your body if you’re not careful with them. Do not try this at home.

I’m no lawyer, but this seems a bit frightening. As the story goes, a well-known hacker named George Hotz—also known as GeoHot—figured out how to “jailbreak” Sony’s PlayStation 3 video game console. The trick essentially lets PS3 owners load alternative operating systems or run games that haven’t been sanctioned by Sony on their consoles. This includes pirated games. Hotz made this jailbreaking software available for download on his personal website, and Sony brought legal action against him. However, Sony has also recently been granted the legal ability to collect the IP addresses of anybody who’s visited Hotz’s website since 2009. According to Wired: “Bluehost maintains Hotz’s geohot.com site. The approved subpoena requires the company to turn over ‘documents reproducing all server logs, IP address logs, account information, account access records and application or registration forms’ tied to Hotz’s hosting. The Bluehost subpoena also demands ‘any other identifying information corresponding to persons or computers who have accessed or downloaded files hosted using your service and associated’ with the http://www.geohot.com website, including but not limited to the ‘geohot.com/jailbreak.zip file.’” So even if you merely visited Hotz’ site between 2009 and present day, Sony can apparently get access to your IP address. I’ve visited the site since then for sure, as have plenty of other tech writers. The same judge granted subpoenas to Hotz’s Blogger.com account, Twitter account and YouTube account. The YouTube account contains a video called “Jailbroken PS3 3.55 with Homebrew,” and Sony has managed to convince the judge to grant the company access to the IP addresses of anyone who watched the video or posted comments on the video. The YouTube subpoena “demands data to identify who watched the video and ‘documents reproducing all records or usernames and IP addresses that have posted or published comments in response to the video,’” says Wired. Now might be a good time to grab some popcorn, pull up the old ottoman, and watch the backlash unfold.
Take the phone off the hook, send the kids to Grandma’s, and light some aromatherapy candles as you prepare to hunker down for a weekend of iPad modding. If you want to stuff a Verizon 3G connection into your iPad, that is. Assuming you have the chops to crack open your iPad, remove AT&T’s 3G module, and solder the innards of a Verizon MiFi router to various iPad parts, you’ll no doubt realize that you’ll be voiding the warranty on both your iPad and your MiFi. Also, you’ll lose GPS connectivity on the iPad as well. But—BUT!—you’ll gain the ability to use your iPad as a Wi-Fi hotspot. So there. If you’ve got the will, the talent, and the tools to do all this, then follow the instructions on this guy’s blog post. I don’t know what his name is, but let’s call him Ballsy McModderfingers. The end result, according to an initial speed test, is an 1192 kbps download speed and a 693 kbps upload speed on the Verizon-ified iPad versus a 193 kbps download speed and 42 kbps upload speed on an AT&T equipped iPhone 3G. Two different devices, yes, but it’s still a huge speed difference.
If you want to go old school–like REALLY old school–with your keyboard, then the USB Typewriter looks to be right up your alley. It’s available as one of six preconfigured typewriter models for between $400 and $500 or you can order a do-it-yourself kit for $75 if you’re feeling adventurous and want to convert your own typewriter for use with your PC, Mac, or even your iPad. Here’s the store link. And, of course, words can’t possibly do justice to an actual video of the USB typewriter “working as a Typewriter Dock for an Apple iPad,” so here you go: More on Techland: Portable Gaming Emulator Features External Gamepads Pentax Goes Retro With The Optio I-10 Happy Peripheral Day!

First there was the iPhone. Then came Android. And everyone was like, “Android’s great but it’s no iPhone!” Now everyone’s like, “Android’s great, look out iPhone!” Then David Wang cut the fluff and made it so you can install Android on your iPhone. The previously covered Android-to-iPhone hack now has a how-to writeup and code download over at PC World. And if you think it’s as simple as downloading an app to your phone and hitting the pretty little icon, you’re in for a bit of disappointment. It’s “not for the faint of heart” as they say. You’ll need: “A first-generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G with firmware versions between 2.0 and 3.1.2, jailbroken with Redsn0w, Blacksn0w, or PwnageTool. If you already updated your handset to 3.1.3 or to a 4.0 beta, you must use PwnageTool to create a jailbroken 3.1.2 .ipsw file to restore down to.” It’s also recommended that you familiarize yourself with how to get your iPhone into recovery mode and DFU mode, you’ll have to use the command-line interface, and there’s a whole bunch of other jibber jabber that makes this look like a weekend project. And to be clear, it doesn’t work on the iPhone 3GS, iPad, or iPod Touch models—just the iPhone and iPhone 3G. If you meet all the prerequisites, though, you can whip yourself up a dual-booting iPhone with some Android goodness. via Engadget More on Techland: Android Running On The iPhone A Practical Guide To Android [Update] Verizon Working With Google On Android Tablet
