Motorola’s laptop dock for the Atrix 4G smartphone is a taste of the future that’s way too expensive for the present at $500. Thankfully, that hasn’t discouraged Motorola from working on newer, cheaper versions. Motorola Chief Executive Sanjay Jha told investors to expect more laptop docks in the second half of this year, covering a broader range of prices than the Atrix 4G Lapdock. According to ZDNet, cheaper docks may have smaller screen sizes and resolutions. The existing Atrix dock is virtually an empty shell with a track pad, keyboard, battery and 11.6-inch display. All of the computing power comes from the phone itself, which loads up a full version of the Firefox browser when plugged into a slot behind the Lapdock screen. The advantage, in theory, is the ability to store important data on the phone and be able to access it on the big screen without transferring files. But that benefit is far outweighed by the Lapdock’s cost. A two-year tethering contract, when purchased with the $200 Atrix 4G phone, brings the dock price down to $300, but then you’ve got to pay an extra $20 per month on top of the basic $25 data plan for the life of the contract. For that matter, you can’t access AT&T’s network through the phone without a tethering plan. That, to me, is the biggest dealbreaker. Even though the dock isn’t a separate computer, it still requires the same monthly data charges as a tethered tablet or laptop. AT&T tries to justify this by saying the dock is more capable than a netbook. More likely, AT&T recognizes that modular computing is a threat to the carrier’s existing business model, which charges a premium to connect computers and tablets to its network. Rather than rock the boat, AT&T made tethering mandatory. In a perfect world, wireless subscribers would pay one price for a bunch of data, accessible on any device, whether it’s a smartphone, tablet, laptop or Lapdock, and not have to worry about secondary charges for tethering. I’m hoping some

AT&T is finally making good on its promise to enable 4G uploads for Motorola’s Atrix 4G. For reasons not entirely clear, AT&T was holding back upload speeds on the powerful smartphone, and was doing the same for HTC’s Inspire 4G. Although both phones are are capable of High-Speed Uplink Packet Access, or HSUPA, uploads were handled by a slower protocol at launch. So instead of getting maximum upload speeds of 5.5 Mbps, users were capped at measly 300 kbps. After weeks of complaints, AT&T finally came clean in late March, saying it needed more time for “testing and preparations,” and promising to turn on HSUPA through a software update in April. It looks like that time has come Atrix users can find details on the update, which will be delivered over the air, here. The update fixes some other odds and ends, such as the volume of Skype calls, data interruptions and general call functionality. I haven’t seen anything about an update for HTC’s Inspire 4G, but I’m assuming it’ll be close behind.
For weeks, AT&T customers have grumbled about slow uploads on their supposedly super-fast phones, the Motorola Atrix 4G and HTC Inspire 4G. Now, the carrier’s saying upload speeds will be crippled until some time in April. The issue lies with High-Speed Uplink Packet Access, or HSUPA, a data transfer protocol capable of 5.5 Mbps uploads. Although the Atrix and Inspire technically support HSUPA, AT&T hasn’t switched on the capability yet, thereby capping upload speeds at a meager 300 kbps. Until now, AT&T hasn’t made any public statements about the slow upload speeds, but in a statement to Wired, the carrier’s apparently clearing the air. “We will be turning HSUPA upload speeds on via a software update to the Motorola ATRIX 4G and HTC Inspire 4G planned for April,” an AT&T spokesman told Wired, adding that the upcoming Samsung Infuse 4G will support HSUPA at launch. This is frankly an embarrassment for AT&T, which in the wake of Verizon’s iPhone launch has expressed a newfound love for Android. Given iPhone 4 support for HSUPA, crippling new Android phones doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. AT&T’s vague statement about why these phones didn’t support HSUPA at launch is also a little disturbing. The company’s only explanation so far is that it’s “performing the testing and preparations necessary to ensure that, when we turn this feature on, you will continue to have a world class experience.” Fair enough. Just bear in mind that the next time AT&T–or any carrier for that matter–bandies the term “4G” at you, it doesn’t have to mean a thing.
Technology experts have been saying for years—YEARS!—that our personal computers will one day be so small and powerful that we’ll carry them around in our pockets. Motorola’s Atrix 4G smartphone and laptop dock have gotten an early jump on that future. The Android-based Atrix 4G phone is powerful in its own right—dual core processor, an entire gigabyte of RAM, 4-inch 960×540 screen—and that power is used to drive an entire laptop-sized interface with the addition of Motorola’s $500 Lapdock ($300 if you buy it when you buy the phone). It’s a cool, albeit very, very expensive glimpse into a future where your smartphone is your main computer that you pop into various docking stations at home, in the car, and at the office. The phone itself is worth the $200 asking price, though the $300 to $500 premium for a laptop dock that can’t do anything without the phone seems like it’d be a lot easier to swallow if its price tag was halved (at the very least). (More: The Motorola Atrix 4G: It’s a Nifty Phone, and It’s From AT&T) You’re also required to add a $45-per-month AT&T data plan in order to be able to use the laptop dock. So you’re looking at a minimum two-year outlay of almost $1,600 before even adding voice and texting to the mix. As it stands, the Atrix 4G smartphone and laptop dock combo represent a cool look at where the future is heading. The price tag keeps the experience relegated to eccentric billionaires and well-heeled IT departments, though. Want more video reviews? Click here.
I’ll admit to lusting after the idea of the Motorola Atrix for the past month. Announced at CES, the 4G phone runs Android atop a 1GHz dual-core processor, packs an entire gigabyte of RAM under the hood and sports a 4-inch, 960×540 resolution screen. It’s truly a tiny computer that’d give some netbooks a run for the money. As such, it kind of turns into a netbook itself. Motorola will be selling an optional 11.6-inch laptop shell that’s completely powered by the actual phone. You pop the phone into a dock on the back and you’re greeted with a custom interface and full Firefox web browser that you can navigate with a trackpad and keyboard. And with that, we’re one step closer to a future where your phone is your computer and it docks into any of a number of “dumb” terminals inside your home, office and car to provide an experience customized to the setting. Everything’s moving in the right direction but I have some reservations about this Motorola Atrix combination in general. For starters, while the phone costs a fair $200 (with two-year contract), you’ll need to shell out an additional $400 for the laptop dock and then wait for a $100 rebate. The total package price once the dust settles is $500 but it requires a two-year contract with AT&T’s $45-per-month “Data Pro smartphone plan and tethering add-on.” Add the minimum voice plan at $40 per month and you’re already up to $85 before adding text messaging or any additional services. You can purchase the laptop dock separately, but it’ll cost a whopping $500. Keep in mind that the dock itself requires the Atrix phone to function. That’s a lot of money for something that doesn’t actually do anything aside from providing a trackpad, keyboard, and a simple interface. And the thing still weighs almost two and a half pounds, so it’s not like it’s a razor-thin and super portable notebook from the future.
