Let’s get real: We have a password problem. People generally don’t use unique passwords for each site they visit. Some people just use plain awful passwords. Even if you use strong passwords, as recommended, sites still get hacked (over and over and over again). Getting rid of passwords altogether has been heralded as a possible solution, whether by fingerprint authentication, eyeball scanning, facial recognition or any number of tactics that use your body as a unique identifier. Former DARPA head Regina Dugan is now in charge of advanced research at Motorola. In an interview at the D11 conference this week, Dugan showed off two things her team has been working on: a digital tattoo and a once-daily pill, both of which would be used to authenticate you in some manner or another. All Things D She first showed off the tattoo, saying, “This is a developmental system made by MC10. It has an antenna and some sensors embedded in it, and what we plan to do is work with them to advance a tattoo that could be used for authentication.” It doesn’t appear to be a permanent tattoo — there’s a better look at the tattoos up close on MC10′s website — though Dugan joked that although kids don’t like wearing watches, they’d get electronic tattoos “if only to piss off their parents.” The basic concept behind this type of tattoo isn’t all that different from the keyfob you might use for work or the tap-to-pay credit card you might have. The main difference is that you’d be less likely to lose your tattoo. But why not turn your entire body into an authentication device? After demonstrating the authentication tattoo, Dugan continued, “And that’s something that you wear, but you could also imagine including authentication in just your daily habits. So, I take a vitamin every morning. What if I could take vitamin authentication?” All Things D “This pill has a small chip inside of it with a switch. It also has what amounts to an inside-out potato battery. When

At the D11 Conference yesterday, Motorola Mobility CEO Dennis Woodside teased the Moto X, possibly the first phone to earn the approval of the company’s overlords at Google. Google had previously distanced itself from Motorola’s products, despite having purchased the phone maker a year ago. In February, Google CFO Patrick Pichette said Motorola’s devices were not “wow” by the search giant’s standards, referring to them as “18 months of pipeline that we actually have to drain right now.” Ouch. It sounds like the two companies are finally in sync on the Moto X–formerly known in the rumor mill as the “Motorola X Phone.” Few official details are available, but between Woodside’s comments, a press release that followed, and the dozens of rumors that have been popping up over the last several months, we can piece together a picture of what the Moto X is about. Here’s what we know–and what we think we know–about Motorola’s next flagship phone: It’s Being Made in America While it’s not exactly a feature, Motorola says every Moto X phone shipped to the United States will be assembled in Fort Worth, Texas. According to Motorola, building in the U.S. allows the company to “iterate on design much faster, create a leaner supply chain, respond much more quickly to purchasing trends and demands, and deliver devices to people here much more quickly.” Some components will come from America, but others, including the screen and processor, will come from countries such as Taiwan and Korea. A manufacturing partner, Flextronics, will assemble phones in China and Brazil for shipping outside the United States. It Will Do Interesting Things with Sensors Woodside gave a couple of vague examples of how the Moto X would be “contextually aware,” using sensors like the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope. The phone will know when you’ve taken it out of your pocket, and may turn on the camera after somehow recognizing that you want to take a picture. It can also sense when you’re in a car and provide a different mode designed for safe

At the D11 conference‘s session this afternoon with Motorola Mobility CEO Dennis Woodside and Regina Dugan, the company’s senior VP of advanced technology and projects, Woodside began by recapping the company’s proud heritage of innovation. The cell phone was invented there. It created the phenomenally popular Razr. Even some of its failures, like the Iridium satellite phone, have been daring and noble. And then Mossberg cut him off with a question that hung over the room like a gloomy little cloud: “What has Motorola done for me lately?” Both Woodside’s and Mossberg’s points were reasonable. If you judge its entire 85-year history, Motorola has done amazing things. But it’s stumbled in the smartphone era. And the company has been awfully quiet since being acquired by Google in 2012. It hasn’t been clear why Google wanted to own a smartphone company or what it planned to do with it — especially since it’s maintained that it would give Moto no unfair advantages over other Android hardware makers such as Samsung and HTC. Woodside and Dugan’s D11 chat turned out to be, basically, the flipside of Tim Cook’s conversation the night before. Apple is an incredibly successful company that needs to keep on being incredibly successful, but won’t explain how it plans to do so until its new products are ready or very nearly so. Motorola, by contrast, needs to convince the world that it’s still in the game at all — and since it has little to lose, it was happy to share major tidbits about a phone it doesn’t plan to ship for months. One which Woodside said he had in his pocket, though he wouldn’t show it to us. That phone, Woodside confirmed, will be called the Moto X. It will use its sensors in creative ways, he said — such as to notice when you’ve removed your phone from your pocket and might want to do something with it. And unlike any phone that you own right now, it will be assembled in America, in a Flextronics factory

Motorola’s Droid Razr line of Android phones is getting a facelift, with three new handsets coming to Verizon Wireless this year. The Droid Razr HD, Razr Maxx HD and Razr M all share some common specs, such as processing power, camera quality and data speeds, but they differ in size, battery life and price. Let’s go through the differences first: Droid Razr HD The Razr HD is like a larger version of the original Droid Razr from 2011. Yes, Motorola’s getting in on the humongous screen trend with 4.7-inch, 720p display, compared to a 4.3-inch display in last year’s model. That boost in screen size allows for a 40 percent larger battery, but we’ll have to see if that translates to better battery life overall. Droid Razr Maxx HD The Razr Maxx HD is nearly identical to the Razr HD, but has a much bigger battery–3,300 mAh, compared to 2,500 in the Razr HD–despite a mere 0.35 inches in added thickness. Motorola promises 32 hours of normal use on a charge, 13 hours of straight video playback, up to 21 hours of talk time or up to eight hours of 4G web browsing. (Motorola says the regular Razr HD gets 24 hours of normal use and six hours of Web browsing.) Droid Razr M Think of the Razr M as a redesigned version of the original Droid Razr. Like last year’s model, it has a 4.3-inch display with 960-by-540 resolution, but the bezels around the sides of the screen are much thinner, so the phone won’t feel as monstrously wide. Three New Razrs, Similar Specs Here’s what all three phones have in common: 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, the same as several other high-end phones on the U.S. market right now 1 GB of RAM 8-megapixel rear camera Front-facing camera (1.3-megapixels for the Razr HD and Maxx, 0.3-megapixels for the Razr M) 4G LTE data speeds, of course MicroSD slots for extra storage (built-in storage capacities unspecified) “Global Ready” for voice and data service in 205 countries They all

Crazy as it sounds, Motorola Mobility — the mobile devices division of Motorola purchased by Google — just secured an injunction to prohibit the sale of major Microsoft products in Germany, including Windows 7 and the Xbox 360. A court in Mannheim ruled Wednesday that several Microsoft products, including Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, infringe on various Motorola patents relating to video compression technology, and that Microsoft must remove those items from German stores. But in a curious cross-national legal development, Motorola was preemptively ordered in April by a U.S. court not to enforce the German ban, were it granted, pending a ruling on a related patent dispute in Seattle. The chances Motorola would act to immediately enforce the German ban are thus nil, says Microsoft. What’s more, Reuters notes that Microsoft has already moved its European distribution operations from Germany to the Netherlands in anticipation of the German ruling. “This is one step in a long process, and we are confident that Motorola will eventually be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms for the benefit of consumers who enjoy video on the web,” said Microsoft in a statement. ”Motorola is prohibited from acting on today’s decision, and our business in Germany will continue as usual while we appeal this decision and pursue the fundamental issue of Motorola’s broken promise.” At issue in the Mannheim ruling, specifically, were two Motorola patents for H.264 video playback. H.264 is an industry standard for video compression, first published in 2003. On its website, Motorola lists H.264 as one of several major patent holdings that include 2G, 3G, 4G, MPEG-4, 802.11 and near field communications (NFC). The Mannheim ruling is the latest development in a rash of international patent lawsuits brought by companies like Apple, Samsung, Google and Microsoft as global sales of devices like mobile phones and tablets that depend on patented technologies skyrocket. Microsoft is working to have U.S. imports of Motorola’s Android-based phones blocked, for instance, while Motorola’s working to do the same to
