The news that Warner Bros. has purchased a movie pitch as the result of posts made on Reddit shouldn’t come as a surprise to many people; if there’s one thing that social media has proven over the years, it’s that it exists as fodder for the creation of “mainstream” media like movies, television shows and music—as well as numerous news stories along the line of “OMG The Internet Has Made A TV Show – Now It Is Real!” (MORE: Twitter Owns #OccupyWallStreet Chatter) What these stories—and, almost all reporting about the Reddit deal, which nonetheless consistently finds time to mention that the writer behind the Reddit posts is a two-time Jeopardy champion—fail to mention, however, is that almost all of these “mainstream” media projects that spin off from social media posts/personalities/whatever are appallingly bad, and seemingly the result of an executive or several saying “The kids like the internet, right? I don’t like it, but what the hell, let’s give it a shot.” Don’t believe me? Here are the greatest hits of the Social Media/Old Media collaboration machine. article continues on next page…

Ben Bajarin is the Director of Consumer Technology Analysis and Research at Creative Strategies, Inc, a technology industry analysis and market intelligence firm located in Silicon Valley. Social networks have been in the news lately. Last month MySpace was sold and we learned that Justin Timberlake and his partners have decided to try and help it be successful again. (MORE: Myspace Sold for $35 Million with ‘Significant Reduction’ of Staff Imminent) Google has just launched a new service called Google+ that has the blogosphere asking if it is a Facebook killer. So the question I want to explore is whether or not what happened to MySpace could happen to Facebook? Facebook Learned from MySpace’s Errors MySpace fell from grace for several reasons. First, they sacrificed the service’s integrity in pursuit of monetization. For those who remember, the user experience declined drastically once the service hit a critical mass. We were bombarded by ads—highly irrelevant ones and many of a sexual nature (at least mine were). There came a point in time where I literally said to myself that the service had become unusable. I heard the same from a plethora as others as well. The turning point was when they lost control to the advertisers. Their monetization strategy was poor and because of that the site went downhill. The second reason was because they failed to innovate in order to meet the needs of their users. In short, MySpace ran out of ideas. The site started with the humble idea of giving people their own spaces on the web but never evolved it into much more. Facebook, on the other hand, has taken a different approach. They have not only been innovating and evolving the service to meet the needs of their users, but they have also been employing a business model that actually works for the service and is valuable to people. This model includes the subtle yet relevant placing of ads. Facebook has innovated and monetized without sacrificing their network’s integrity for the almighty dollar. Facebook also has another

Myspace has been purchased by an advertising outfit called Specific Media to the tune of $35 million, reports All Things D. The once-ubiquitous social networking site was acquired by News Corp. back in 2005 for $580 million, with All Things D adding that the $35 million sale price “is well below the $100 million that News Corp. had been hoping for and a chasm away from Myspace’s one-time billion valuation.” In an apparent memo to Myspace employees obtained by TechCrunch, CEO Mike Jones relays the following: “In conjunction with the deal, we are conducting a series of restructuring initiatives, including a significant reduction in our workforce. I will assist Specific with the transition over the next two months before departing my role as Myspace CEO.” The “significant reduction” will amount to laying off half of the team at Myspace, from 400 employees to around 200, says All Things D, adding, “as well as other cost cuts.” (LIST: 5 Failed Social Networks Even Worse Than MySpace) In its heyday, Myspace boasted over 100 million users but as recently as February of this year was estimated to count just shy of 63 million members among its ranks. Facebook, by comparison, may have eclipsed 750 million users recently. It’s not entirely clear what Specific Media plans to do with Myspace, despite a buzzword-laden press release that reads as follows: “Specific Media, a digital media company, today announced it has acquired Myspace from News Corporation. As part of the agreement, News Corporation will take a minority equity stake in Specific Media. Additional terms of the agreement are confidential and will not be disclosed. ‘Myspace is a recognized leader that has pioneered the social media space. The company has transformed the ways in which audiences discover, consume and engage with content online,’ said Tim Vanderhook, Specific Media CEO. ‘There are many synergies between our companies as we are both focused on enhancing digital media experiences by fueling connections with relevance and interest. We look forward to combining our platforms to drive the next generation of

Things got so bad that Lady Gaga, the social network’s face, publically called the results “underwhelming,” while Apple’s once-promising service didn’t even warrant a mention during WWDC earlier this month. If anything, Ping highlights the inherent challenge of building a mass market social network around music, an industry that’s been more or less wrecked by the advent of MP3s and file sharing platforms. If users can download an album for free (and go largely unpunished), why would they go to an online service and listen to clips? (SPECIAL: The All-TIME 100 Albums) Take for instance MySpace, whose ascent to one of the world’s most trafficked sites was followed by one of the web’s more spectacular flameouts. The first mainstream social network, in trying to rebuild its identity, famously reinvented itself as a resource for bands and music fans – and look how well that turned out. “Music is something that is naturally social,” says Steve Jang, CEO of Soundtracking, a music sharing and discovery app that was launched at this past year’s South by Southwest conference. “Back in the day, it was an analog experience, such as playing music in your living room, going to concerts with friends and hanging out at the local record store.” The difference in today’s digital age, however, is that listening to music requires a certain degree of immersion. You have to be in a situation where you’re primed to actually listen (like at your work desk). Photosharing platforms like Instagram are currently booming because your reaction to an image is instantaneous – you can more or less decide if you like a photo right away – but with music? It takes time, even if it’s only for a few seconds.
Despite reports to the contrary, Vevo is not in talks to buy MySpace from News Corp. So says the one person who ought to know: Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff. “It’s not something I can really talk about,” Caraeff told PaidContent when asked about MySpace, “I’ve seen that reported. Our strategy is to focus on growing organically, building a global brand. We’re not in conversations to make [the MySpace purchase] happen – it’s not something that there’s any substance to.” It Caraeff isn’t playing semantics, it’s bad news for News Corp., which has been looking to offload the site for some time now. But with the once-great social network making such a massive financial hit, it’s hardly surprising that few companies are willing to buy it. Maybe News Corp. should just wait a bit, then turn to the sole remaining MySpace holdout who hasn’t switched to Facebook and try selling it to them.
One of these days, News Corp may get some good news from ailing social network MySpace, but today’s not that day: The media monolith’s being sued for sharing user data with third parties without consent. This, despite claiming it told users access to such information was restricted. The class-action lawsuit, Virtue vs. Myspace Inc., was filed in the Eastern District of New York, and seeks unspecified damages for “knowingly [serving] as and [profiting] handsomely from being a conduit through which details of the most intimate aspects of its members’ lives, as reflected in their Internet browsing history and otherwise, are transmitted to data aggregators, who package the information into profiles and sell it like any other commodity to advertisers.” None of that should come as a surprise to MySpace users, however–the MySpace mobile app had already been identified as one that shared data with advertisers without consent last year. News Corp. has declined to comment on the lawsuit, and it’s unknown whether this might impact the rumored talks the company is having with Vevo.com about a possible purchase of MySpace.
Apple, Comcast, MySpace, Skype and Verizon are most willing to throw users under the bus when it comes to privacy, says the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Looking to rally users around the issue of privacy, the EFF has drawn up a handy chart for how tech companies respond to government requests for data. The advocacy group has also launched a petition seeking better policies from these companies. When using web services or connected gadgets, users typically agree to terms of service, and these often lay out what happens to user data in response to government subpoenas. EFF activist Rainey Reitmann explained to Forbes that Apple, Skype and Verizon use vague language in their terms of service to give themselves leeway when handing user data to the government. Those companies also haven’t joined Digital Due Process, an industry lobbying group that wants stronger privacy protections for users and clearer policies from the government. Google and Twitter both earned higher marks than most companies. The latter successfully fought in court for the right to inform users that it was handing over account information for Julian Assange and four Wikileaks associates. The EFF’s report, pictured below, awards full stars for companies who are doing a “stellar job,” and half stars for companies who are moving in the right direction.

It might be the beginning of the end for troubled social network site Myspace. As News Corp. allows potential buyers to look at the company’s books, Myspace Music president Courtney Holt has stepped down from his position after two years on the job. Officially, Holt will stay with Myspace in an advisory position, and retains a place on the Myspace Music board, but he will not be immediately replaced as MSM president; instead, Myspace CEO Mike Jones will step in as interim president for an unspecified time, according to an internal memo on the situation. These changes come as News Corp. prepares to open negotiations with prospective buyers in the second week of March by allowing them to look at the financial history of the company. According to the Hollywood Reporter, approximately 20 parties have shown interest in a purchase, the majority of those parties being private equity and/or venture capital firms. MySpace was responsible for dragging losses for News Corp’s Digital Media Group from $31 million to $156 million in the same time period – the other two parts of the group, Fox Mobile and Digital’s outdoor business, grew in success during the same period – making it no surprise that News Corp. is continuing to look for some way of easing the strain the site brings. News Corp. COO Chase Carey told analysts, The new MySpace has been very well received by the market and we have some very encouraging metrics.
The once-king of social networks, MySpace has fallen beyond repair – or so say the hundreds of blogs calling for a mercy killing after this week’s massive employee layoffs. Just three years ago, News Corp.’s Rupert Murdoch pooh-poohed Facebook as it headed straight for them saying that MySpace was more than just “looking up friends.” Now, with 47% of the staff laid off, we’re willing to bet Murdoch would love to be Zuckerberg’s friend. MySpace is one of the greatest examples of the fickle state of Internet users. Either ingenuity persists, or you’ll leave holes for your competitors to come barreling through. But at least MySpace enjoyed success in the first place. Other fledgling social sites with high aspirations and even big names to back them, have become even bigger punchlines than MySpace. Here are five social networks even worse than MySpace:

The once-popular social network site is expected to lay off between 550-600 of its 1000 employees tomorrow, and is said to be finalizing the figure today. The cuts are said to be being made internationally, with MySpace China reportedly losing its CEO and the majority of its staff, and MySpace UK to similarly “significantly downsize”.
MySpace could use a few more friends of its own. The once-popular social networking site is not only likely to have a new owner by mid-year – or sooner, if News Corp. can find a buyer – but it’s also about to lose more than half of its current 1,100 employees before the end of the month. CNBC reported yesterday that News Corp. is looking to layoff 50% of the company’s staff by mid-month, adding that “the company’s likely to do many more layoffs than that.” The news echoed an earlier report in the Wall Street Journal, which pointed out that the site had already laid off a third of its staff last summer in an attempt to make the company more profitable. MySpace’s ad revenue fell by over 30% in 2010, with traffic falling 15% in November 2010 compared with the same period in 2009. Sources differ as to whether News Corp. is already in talks with prospective buyers, but a sale is expected by the middle of the year or sooner.
The potential of MySpace may be limitless – as long as it survives the next few months, it seems. Talking at the Reuters Global Media Summit conference earlier this week, the COO of MySpace parent News Corp., Chase Carey, said that that the company was open to all options concerning the site’s future, including selling it: There are opportunities here to do twenty things [with MySpace] but that doesn’t mean you’re going to do any of the twenty. If there’s something there that makes sense you ought to think about it. With ad revenue expected to fall 37% this year – and the site already operating at a loss – it’s no surprise that News Corp. wants to do something with MySpace. The recent recasting of it as a “Social Entertainment Destination” rather than a social networking site (including a link-up with Facebook) may have been triggered by any potential sale, he admitted: I think [without the upgrade] those options would have been pretty limited and I think probably would have undervalued it against what we think it can be. Comments like that make it sound as if someone at News Corp. thinks there’s still some potential left in MySpace, although I admit to some curiosity what that would be at this point, without an even more widescale overhaul or repurposing. Maybe it would be easier just to sell, after all… More On Techland: MySpace No Longer Competing With Facebook, CEO Says MySpace Integrates Facebook, Universe Doesn’t Collapse

It had to come sometime. MySpace has conceded the battle for supreme social network to Facebook, saying that they prefer to focus on “music entertainment content” on Fox Business Network. (More on TIME.com: The End Is Near: Will MySpace Sink After Departure Of Another CEO?) “We are no longer competing. MySpace is focused specifically on social entertainment,” said CEO Mike Jones to FBN. “MySpace has deep roots with music entertainment content,” he added. “We saw a big change in the way people were using the MySpace product and we had to embrace that and we had to create a new entertainment product that really played to our users interests.” (More on TIME.com: New MySpace Design to Feature Less Eyeball Hurting) Yesterday, MySpace allowed people to log into their website with their Facebook accounts, intertwining the former competitors. The feature, called “Mashup with Facebook,” sits in the middle of entertainment media content showing that MySpace has really given up personal networking all together. Let’s hope for a happy relationship between the two companies – that is, until Facebook decides to take over the music and film industries and then the world.
You can now log into the social network that nobody uses anymore with your username and password from the social network everyone uses. And with that, MySpace has pretty much given up on trying to be a social network in the interest of serving as a personalized entertainment site instead. That’s actually pretty smart. You can now not only log in with your Facebook credentials, but MySpace will create a basic profile for you and pull in the likes and interests from your Facebook account and leverage them to deliver customized content to you. You’ll also start seeing Facebook’s “Like” buttons all over MySpace, too. (More: Two Minute Video: Facebook’s New Messaging System Explained) The feature is being called “Mashup with Facebook.” Per the press release: “Users can visit Myspace.com and click on the Mashup with Facebook button to begin. In just a few simple steps, a basic Myspace profile is created and users can immediately begin building their personal profile based on information they’ve listed in their Facebook profile. Built into the feature are robust algorithms that help enable the discovery, expression, and connection to entertainment content for a user to customize their Myspace profile.” Notice how the new MySpace has a lowercase S now. This is not the old MySpace. This is a new MySpace (I can’t bring myself to type the new S). (More: New MySpace Design to Feature Less Eyeball Hurting) Again, this is smart. Whether people actually use this with MySpace or not isn’t really the point. Any new social network-type site should follow this same plan. Nobody wants to take the time to set up a new profile anywhere and Facebook’s “Connect” feature lets people synchronize most of the important stuff with any site that integrates with Facebook’s data. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Or at least use their data to let people quickly set up accounts on your site.
