Everyone keeps talking Nintendo. The latest scuttlebutt concerns a Japanese event happening on September 13th, which rumormongers seem to think could mean a redesign for the newly-cheaper Nintendo 3DS portable. The 3DS-centric happening is only two days before the start of the Tokyo Game Show, the perfect time to announce a new take on the beleaguered handheld. It’s also be a good time to announce new games, plans for celebrating Metroid’s 25th Anniversary or more details on Wii U. But the topic du jour is the 3DS. (MORE: The Nintendo Difference: What’s at Stake for Mario’s Kingdom) French site 01net.com [WARNING: French] quotes a source close to Nintendo as saying a new 3DS with a right analog stick will be the big reveal. Said stick would be an add-on peripheral that’d cost $10. While a major hardware revision like this at such a time seems unlikely, it’s good to remember how long the hue and cry for a second stick on the PSP went on for. And when it was finally made part of the Vita’s design, there was much rejoicing. If there are new 3DS developments on the horizon, I for one hope it’ll be the announcement of a 3DS XL. If Nintendo wants to continue its stereoscopic strategy, a bigger viewing screen would seem more attractive. It’d also make the movies and other 3D content that they’re making available more compelling. I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a right analog stick, either. But that elusive 3D sweet spot might be less annoying with a bigger screen to focus on. The Japanese event is only a few weeks away, so we’ll see what Nintendo has in store.
Last week, the fine folks at TechHeads asked yours truly and Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo to talk about the current status of Nintendo and gaming topics. You can see Stephen and me jaw it up below, but there were other points I didn’t have a chance to make that I wanted to add to the discussion: • Nintendo doesn’t bring loss-leader consoles to market The video games industry generally operates on the onerous razor-and-blades business model. That’s when the razor gets sold below what it actually costs to make, with the idea that customers will come back again and again to buy the blades. All of a sudden, it makes sense why a four-pack of blades costs $20, eh? For example, when the PS3 launched its baseline version at $500 in 2006, Sony was actually losing approximately $300 per unit. The lure of Blu-ray and a growing library of games was going to be what helped Sony recoup those losses. Microsoft endured a similar shortfall with the launches of both the original Xbox and the Xbox 360. (MORE: Nintendo’s Wii U: Gimmicky, Practical, Fascinating) Nintendo’s never conducted itself that way. They generally don’t take the onus of R&D upon themselves, preferring to use already extant technology in innovative ways. Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata says they see themselves as a software company first: “The point is not necessarily the limit of the technologies, but rather we should think in terms of the software, whether or not we would be able to come up with a new great software idea is the key. At Nintendo, it’s very different. The poor guys in hardware development always have to ask the software developers, ‘Is this the year that you are likely needing new hardware?’ [Laughter] Of course there are some people who really love high-tech at Nintendo and I have to admit that some of them must be sometimes frustrated. I will say, however, that everybody at Nintendo is pretty much aware that it’s not hardware nor is it software alone, but it’s

If you haven’t snatched up a 3DS yet (if not, we wouldn’t blame you, given the dearth of interesting games) Nintendo’s sweetening its upcoming price drop with a ‘Flame Red’ version. If red’s your thing—as opposed to “Aqua Blue” and “Cosmo Black”—Nintendo says it plans to offer the alternative color from September 9th, shortly after the handheld’s price plummets from $250 to $170 this month. Except wait a second, isn’t that supposed to happen this Friday, August 12th? That’s what Nintendo’s said, you know, all official-like. (LIST: All-TIME 100 Greatest Toys) But according to reports (and pictures of actual sales receipts), it seems some stores are selling the system at the new price already. Like Walmart, where you can reportedly get it for $169.96. (I know, does anyone seriously choose to buy, or not to buy, based on the cheap pennies discount gimmick?) If Walmart’s not your speed (or for some inexplicable reason, nowhere near you) it sounds like some stores may be price-matching, though reports of successful purchases are mixed. If you want the $170 price early, it sounds like Walmart’s the safe bet. The lure to buy early instead of just waiting a few more days? Getting the new system for cheap and getting access to Nintendo’s coveted “Ambassador Program.” That’s Nintendo’s mea culpa for gamers who already bought the system for $250, and it’s a pretty slick deal: 10 original Nintendo Entertainment System and 10 Game Boy Advance games, gratis, when Nintendo makes them available for download from its online store, come September 1st. The only catch: you have to register via your 3DS by the end of August 11th (tomorrow). Those waiting for the August 12th $170 price break had theoretically been shut out, and it sounds like they just got a 24 hours-plus reprieve.
In the wake of a $324 million net loss over the past quarter, Nintendo has announced that its flagship glasses-free 3D portable gaming machine, the Nintendo 3DS, will be discounted by $80—from $250 down to $170—starting August 12. That’s a pretty aggressive price drop, and one which is highlighted with an almost desperate quote from Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, who says, “For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now. We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.” (MORE: Nintendo 3DS: Great Potential, Partially Realized) Nintendo’s most recent earnings report revealed that the company is expecting earnings through March 2012 to be “down 82 percent from its previous outlook,” according to the Associated Press, which adds, “The Kyoto-based company blamed its lackluster sales on a dearth of hit titles for the Wii and 3DS, as well as a strong yen.” The Nintendo 3DS was launched in the U.S. back in late March, and Nintendo found its stock price at a 12-month low just two weeks later. The company reports that 830,000 people have purchased the system in the U.S. since it launched. People who purchased the 3DS before its price drop on August 12 will be able to download 20 free games from the system’s built-in “eShop” as a reward “for getting in on the action early,” says Nintendo.
Oops, it looks like you can’t buy the Nintendo 3DS direct from Amazon anymore, thanks to either a sales goof or some sort of actual manufacturing glitch. Nintendo’s notorious no-glasses 3D games handheld is officially not for sale from the site at this moment. You can still grab it from third-party resellers, like Target, of course, but Amazon’s dropped a disclaimer at the top of the page, noting the 3DS is an “item under review.” (LIST: The 10 Video Games You Have to Check Out at Comic-Con 2011) “While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described here,” writes Amazon, thanking users for the tip and adding it’s “working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.” No one’s sure what forced Amazon’s hand, but speculation is that the slender rubber feet (they look like grains of wild rice) situated at either side of the 3DS’s top screen may be inadequate (as in not thick enough) to protect the top screen from rubbing (or “wobbling”) against the bottom portion and scratching when the lid’s closed. While Nintendo’s said nothing about the alleged issue officially, some customers have claimed newer 3DS units don’t have the problem, because the rubber feet are longer. I admit I haven’t used my 3DS much since I got it—the games are lackluster, and the 3D effect can be difficult to maintain for extended periods, especially with games that require you physically tilt or pan the unit—but the screen remains scratch-free. That said, I can hear a sharp, distinctly plastic-on-plastic sounds when I close the clamshell, so who knows, though it could also be another case of “bunch ‘o customers read about so-called design flaw and opt to bug Amazon because they’re hyper-paranoid.” MORE: The Incredibly Cheap $100 Nintendo 3DS Matt Peckham is a reporter at TIME.
Let’s say you walk into your local video game emporium on the hunt for a Nintendo 3DS. Maybe it’s for your sweetie, your nephew or your own 3D-crazy self. Expecting the worst, you go up to a helpful sales person and hesitantly ask if they have any 3DSes in stock. “Why, yes,” he answers. “What color would you like?” Huh? Isn’t this thing supposed to be selling like ice water in Hades? Sure, the 3DS debuted with a record-setting first week with 400,000 units sold, but it was still very easy to find. Initial statements by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime claimed that Nintendo had adjusted its supply chain in accordance with what the company learned after months and months of Wii shortages. Then, it came out that the 3DS was outsold by its older sibling the DS during the first weeks of availability, largely on the strength of blockbuster Pokemon: Black and Pokemon: White. Well, according to Nintendo’s top man, their newest handheld is indeed under-performing and they’re not happy about it. At a recent investor meeting, president Satoru Iwata acknowledged that sales are not where they want them to be, saying, “The initial sales were healthy; however, the sales speed slowed down from the third week after its launch which is not what we had expected for the start-up transition.” Iwata said that it’s hard to market the 3DS’s main selling point, the stereoscopic capability, even in person. At retail locations where it’s been made available to try out, would-be consumers can still have the adjustable 3D slider at a setting that’s not ideal for them and walk away being less than impressed. He also indirectly noted that their launch software might’ve been a bit weak, too: There might be consumers who are interested in Nintendo 3DS, but they are unable to find software which they want to play, and they are in the “wait-and-see mode,” so I would like to inform you of the launch dates of software titles in Japan. Among the games Iwata mentioned

Early this morning, Nintendo released financial results for its just-ended 2010 financial year. They brag that the total combined sales of software for the DS handheld and Wii have surpassed 1.5 billion units, with 139 DS titles and 103 Wii titles breaking the 1 million mark. But, tucked away alongside all the fiscal cheerleading was the real news, that the House of Mario’s finally confirming a new home console that’s launching in 2012. A brief statement on Nintendo’s Investor Relations page reads: To whom it may concern: Re: Wii’s successor system Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011. We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles. Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012. The web’s been all abuzz about Project Café, the alleged codename for the follow-up to Nintendo’s blockbuster home video game system. Screenshots below are reportedly from development assets created for Project Cafe. There’ve been leaks abounding regarding the upcoming console and speculation’s posited that Project Cafe will be chock full of upgrades and innovations: Final name to be “Stream” Cost likely to fall between $350-$400 Output in 1080p full HD Three-core IBM PowerPC chipset paired with new GPU by ATI Controllers with a combination of touchscreen and stick/button inputs Screen Stream technology, which will send a hi-res portion of the main screen to controller screens Previous rumors have circulated about Nintendo’s next big thing, so all of the above’s to be taken with a grain of salt. However, the world’s first glimpse of the Wii 2/Stream will be coming in two short months when E3 2011 kicks off in June.

Nintendo’s 3DS portable flew off the shelves in late March, moving just shy of 400,000 units during its first week of U.S. sales, reports Nintendo. Couple with Nintendo’s other handhelds, and the company says it saw its best March ever (that’s “in U.S. history” ever) for portable hardware sales. Factor in dueling DS games Pokemon White and Black, both launched in early March with sales of nearly 2.5 million copies combined, and Nintendo says it moved over 460,000 Nintendo DS family systems in March, all told. “We had a great start to the Nintendo 3DS, and portables overall had their best March in history,” Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Bloomberg in a phone interview. On the flipside, the 3DS sold 100,000 units less than the DS did during its launch month, though sales tracker NPD Group notes the DS (the original 2004 model) had a holiday (November) launch advantage, was $100 cheaper, and wasn’t fending off mobile alternatives like smartphones and tablets. That, and the 3DS’s higher price tag means it generated more launch revenue for Nintendo. 3DS software sales were comparably feeble, averaging just one game sold per handheld, perhaps due to critical backlash aimed at Nintendo’s weak launch lineup (mostly recycled games with a new 3D coat and a few overly simplistic new ones). That said, NPD reports more 3DS games “sold through retail this month than did DS software in November 2004.” In console sales, the Wii moved over 290,000 units in March, though beat by Microsoft’s Xbox 360 with 433,000 units. Sony’s made a habit of declining to release PS3 unit sales, presumably because they don’t compare favorably with Microsoft’s or Nintendo’s. The company simply said the PlayStation brand “saw double digit growth across hardware and peripherals.” Video game industry revenue overall declined in March, from $876 million to $735 million year-on-year, though NPD analyst Anita Frazier noted digital distribution growth would “likely result in net industry growth when we release our full measure of the first quarter consumer spend on games in June.”

You really, really love the Nintendo 3DS, apparently enough to make it Nintendo’s fastest selling handheld ever. Not the fastest selling games console ever, mind you, but still pretty impressive for a company with nearly a dozen mobile gaming flavors on the books since the chubby gray-on-green-screen Game Boy debuted back in 1989. “U.S. day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo handheld system in our history,” said Nintendo in a statement. And that’s about all they said, though adding they’ll talk more come April 14, when NPD Group publishes its monthly retail games sales report Last Sunday’s U.S. 3DS launch came just weeks after the Japanese earthquake, tsunami, and grueling nuclear plant ordeal that’s still afflicting the country. A recent 3DS teardown discovered mostly Japanese-made internal bits and bobs, which given predicted slow-ups in Japanese tech-sector manufacturing, puts Nintendo’s supply-chain at risk. Despite that, Nintendo says it “worked hard to get as much product as possible to retailers on day one,” and that it’s continuing to work all-out to keep 3DS inventory flowing. But can it keep the 3D craze going? For all the 3DS’s early accolades, it sounds like Nintendo’s not committing to 3D everywhere just yet. Speaking to CNN on Saturday, Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime dismissed questions about the company’s Wii followup and 3D support. “Glasses-free [3D] is a big deal,” said Fils-Aime. “We’ve not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we’ve learned on 3D, likely, that won’t be it.” Who’s complaining? I’m no fan of 3D movies (with or without glasses) and won’t have the coin to snag a pricey 3D TV for years. It’s frankly hard enough getting the 3DS’s no-glasses 3D effect to line up with my eyeballs, absent bolting the handheld (and my head) to something else (like an anvil) to keep it rock steady.
So you managed to snatch a 3DS, your eyes haven’t exploded, you’re putting it through its paces, and probably realizing, like me, that the launch lineup’s pretty stale. What next? Hurry up and wait. Nintendo’s smack in the middle of their U.S. 3DS launch, and probably will be for the next few weeks. With nearly two dozen games already available, expect the company to bask in the launch afterglow and let those games–mediocre though many are–draft off the launch. (More on TIME.com: What Are Nintendo 3DS Buyers Saying?) But eventually you’ll itch for more, and significantly better. You have a right to. The 3DS has all sorts of potential, but except for the augmented reality games, no one’s tapped more than a fraction of it. Next up is Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 3D, shipping April 10 (and pictured above). Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s actually a souped up version of 2005′s Chaos Theory, probably the best-received installment in this sneaker series yet. So yes, it could be amazing–or it could be an abysmal port. Either way, it’s annoying that publishers seem to think gaming’s future looks a lot like its past. And then we pause for a full month before a May deluge, including Dream Trigger 3D (an original shooter by Art Co., who also did Coraline, Ant Nation, and Astro Boy: The Video Game), Dual Pen Sports (an action-sports game by Indies Zero, of America’s Test Kitchen: Let’s Get Cooking and Personal Trainer: Cooking fame), Thor: God of Thunder (a movie-tie in from Sega), LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean (Disney Interactive), Balloon Pop 2 (UFO Interactive), SpongeBob Squigglepants (THQ), and by mid-month, Dead or Alive Dimensions (Tecmo Koei’s fighter series). From there things get iffy. Sega’s making a Captain America: Super Soldier third-person action game to go with the July 22, 2011 film. There’s ostensibly a ‘Transformers Movie 2011′ tie-in to go with Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon on July 1. And don’t forget Capcom’s Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, currently tracking for a possible

After a year of promises, media events, and touring demos, the no-glasses 3D eagle has landed. The Nintendo 3DS finally debuted in the U.S. yesterday to tales of long lines, brisk sales, and roaring launch parties. Nintendo passed around oldie blue and red cellophane 3D glasses at an official midnight launch event in Manhattan outside the Union Square Best Buy, enjoining line-idling customers attired in hats, coats, and gloves to toss them away as the clock struck midnight. Not offered in trade for those glasses: Arm braces to keep the 3DS steady in your hands while viewing its finicky autostereoscopic 3DS (the screen requires that your eyes remain in a very narrow field-of-view for the 3D effect to work properly). (More on TIME.com: Nintendo 3DS First Impressions: Great Potential, Partially Realized) While it’s too soon for official launch figures or serious sales estimates, we know Nintendo sold around 375,000 units last month during the handheld’s initial 48 hours on sale in Japan, that it was Amazon UK’s most pre-ordered item, well, ever, and that in the U.S., Lazard Capital analyst Colin Sebastian believes pre-orders were about twice those for the Wii. We also know it’s making the rounds in some pretty unusual places–like gas stations. Yep, oil magnate BP’s begun selling the 3DS at around 100 of its service stops in the UK, reports Brand Republic. Rough impressions, scribbled around Twitter ’3DS’ hashtags, tell a partial tale of the user experience so far. “WOW!!! I didnt think #Nintendo could pull it off but the new #3DS really is 3D! Simply #Amazing,” cheered Twitter user PunkyBrew4. “Brought my #3DS to work today to see how much I actually walk in a day. Mondays are also our busy day. This’ll be fun,” wrote Drantis82. “Of COURSE the first thing I play in my 3DS is a DS game,” wrote MrMattJay. “Must say… #3DS is really motivating me to move more, the pedometer and coins I can earn work for me! Just need a way to spend some them,” wrote gcf_klaas.
Avatar‘s record-setting success aside, few entertainment trends have attracted more skepticism than 3D. When it comes to movies, even the best instances of stereoscopic filmmaking earn only begrudging respect. And the worst examples stand out for what they are: trend-driven examples of movie studios and cineplex companies trying to cash in on a fascination. People view the nascent 3DTV categories and 3D programming by network and cable TV in much the same way–as simply a method to extract premium package dollars from consumers. Thus it’s a whopper of a gamble for Nintendo–currently the leader in both the handheld and home console video game categories–to pin its hopes of future dominance on stereoscopic 3D. Part of Nintendo’s strategy is the glasses-free angle. Unlike just about every other type of 3D experience, this new 3DS handheld doesn’t require users to wear glasses. (Or in some cases, glasses over glasses.) So, will the 3DS be the magic bullet for convincing the masses of the awesomeness of 3D? Or is Nintendo risking its handheld gaming hegemony on what could be a passing fad? Here’s what I walked away with after my last few days with Nintendo’s latest handheld. Price of entry: Retailing for $250, the 3DS comes in at $50 more than the Wii and at $50 less than the more full-bodied 250 GB Xbox 360 currently on shelves. It’s a lot of money for a handheld that’s almost singularly focused on gaming. Games for the 3DS will run about $40 a pop, with pricing on downloadable games and entertainment content still to be determined. Compared to other similarly-priced multi-purpose gadgets, the 3DS feels like a big risk. It’s certainly not an impulse buy and probably not a purchase you want to make if you’re happy with an older, 3D-free DS system. Graphics and 3D: Visuals are one area the 3DS shows marked improvement. All of the things you look for in game graphics are demonstrably better on it: colors are brighter, more details show through, and greater variety of lighting effects are possible.

Good morning. Here’s what’s been breaking in tech news while you’ve been sleeping and enjoying your breakfast. Microsoft sues just about everybody The lawyers will be opening another crate of champagne today, as Microsoft announces lawsuits against Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec for patent infringement. What patents, exactly? Microsoft says: “The patents at issue cover a range of functionality embodied in Android devices that are essential to the user experience, including: natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need; surfing the Web more quickly, and interacting with documents and e-books.” … which hardly narrows it down much. Intellectual property expert Florian Mueller has a more detailed breakdown on his blog. Link: Macworld Free image stabilization in YouTube Notwithstanding its purchase just a few days ago of Irish video technology company Green Parrot, YouTube has just launched a free video smoothing feature inside its YouTube Editor toolkit for editing and adjusting video uploaded footage. The New York Times says this is the result of seven Google engineers spending their 20 per cent time on the project. Link: New York Times China: Oh no we didn’t On Monday, Google accused China of messing with people’s Gmail accounts. Today, China called that “an unacceptable accusation” during a regular news conference. Your turn, Google. Link: Reuters Galaxy specs revealed Pocket Now has the scoop on specs for the latest in Samsung’s range of Android tablets, the Galaxy 8.9. It’s just 8.6mm thin, weighs 470 grams, and the screen resolution is a decent 1280×800. Link: Pocket Now The Nintendo 3DS reviews are in Nintendo’s 3DS. Is it any good? Does the 3D bit actually work? Can it withstand Apple’s assault of iThings? Engadget likes what it sees and thinks the Augmented Reality games are cool, but thinks the three hour battery life is disappointing. PC Mag says that although the 3D element in some games is somewhat hit-and-miss, overall the device is “a top-notch upgrade” and “well worth” $250.
It’s a handheld, it plays games, it delivers no-glasses 3D, and–surprise–it’s not from Nintendo. Meet LG’s Thrill 4G, just announced by AT&T, and promoted as “the first U.S. smartphone to deliver a glasses-free 3D experience.” Glasses-free means it’ll employ some form of stereoscopic 3D, sending separate images to each of your eyes to create the illusion of depth without requiring you put junk on your face. Nintendo’s 3DS does it, and so (apparently0 will the AT&T-exclusive Thrill 4G. Due in “the coming months,” the Thrill 4G’s 3D display measures 4.3-inches and renders from a dual-core 1 GHz processor. The phone features 16GB of memory (8 onboard, 8 via a MicroSD card), a 5-megapixel dual-camera that supports both 3D high-definition video (720p) and still images, an HDMI-out port or wireless DLNA streaming for video playback, Android OS 2.2 (aka “Froyo”) and the ability to tap into AT&T’s fledgling high-speed 4G network. Android apps and games, check, but AT&T says it also plans to offer “special” 3D content through something dubbed “LG 3D Space”–basically a portal to 3D games, video clips, and images. The company adds the usual disclaimer about 3D content, noting that if you feel dizzy, nauseated, or like your eyes are doing push-ups in their sockets (“eye strain”), disable the 3D feature pronto until the symptoms pass. Frequent breaks, people, but then that’s what we’re already supposed to be doing with computer screens, right? AT&T also cautions parents to “speak to a physician” before allowing children 5 or younger to view 3D content. A simpler solution: Don’t let your 5-year-old anywhere near what’ll probably be another pricey smartphone. If you want totable glasses-free 3D now, Nintendo’s 3DS launches this coming Sunday, March 27. You’ll have to wait a little longer for the Thrill 4G, of course, though AT&T says it’ll be one of “more than 20″ 4G devices it’s launching in 2011.
So, Nintendo made a big show of hand-delivering their hotly-anticipated handheld all over Manhattan yesterday. The Time Inc. building–home to Techland HQ–was just one of many stops for the fancy bus and I recorded the event for all you readers to see. (Nintendo 3DS Launching on March 27th for $250) Witness the pageantry of gaming device delivery, effendi! Wish we could’ve done that inside… But, now that I’ve got Nintendo’s stereoscopic wonder in my hands, I ask you, gentle reader, what would you like to know? Ask me questions like: Which game should I play first? How long does the battery last? How quickly will my eyes tire? There’s still about two weeks to go until the 3DS hits store shelves, so consider your chance to get some attention for your burning queries before you have to plunk out any cash. I’ll give answers and impressions on the 3DS in an upcoming post.
In the eternal struggle to win over gamers’ thumbs on the go, Nintendo’s been the uncontested champ for decades now. The only other dedicated gaming device to ever mount a worthy challenge has been Sony’s Playstation Portable. Just a week after Nintendo announced its launch plans for their new 3DS, Sony pulled away the veil of secrecy from their Next Generation Portable or NGP. But, we can’t forget that the landscape’s changed significantly with the rise of smartphones with robust technology and game catalogs. These new handhelds by Sony and Nintendo will jockey for market share alongside the ever-growing Android device population and the inevitable new iOS hardware doubtlessly coming from Apple coming this year. With all this activity, it’s worth thinking about the pros and cons for each platform. 3D visuals Stereoscopic presentation is obviously the main selling point of the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime called the company’s new hardware “a category of one,” making the point that no other gadget will be capable of showing of 3D content. Many are still skeptical as to how 3D will ever enhance gameplay but the chance to watch movies and TV shows without glasses will surely appeal to some of the people who shell out for the experience at multiplexes. Meanwhile, Sony made no announcement with regard to 3D on their handheld. Still, the PlayStation division is part of a larger company, one that also happens to make 3DTVs. It’s been stated that Sony views 3D gaming as a big priority so it wouldn’t be beyond the pale for them to implement some sort of stereoscopy–either with or without glasses–into a NGP and charge a premium price for it. Also, it’s entirely possible that any of the buzzed-about 3D Android phones might have a killer game that uses stereoscopy in a clever way. But for now, Nintendo’s the company with a 3D handheld while the content that lives on Sony’s portables and other platforms stays stuck in two dimensions. Advantage: Nintendo Software development and distribution The thing

When Nintendo recently announced details on the American launch of the 3DS, they let folks play samples of the upcoming system’s titles. I had a chance to try out a number of games and came away with impressions on both the games and the 3DS itself. Working on the assumption that the 3DS models on hand were near-final production units, the stereoscopic effect on the 3D top screen looks pretty good when viewed straight on. But, the 3D noticeably breaks up when viewed from an angle. This means that you’ll have to be a lot more still when playing a game with the 3D on, lest movement degrade the depth effect. That’s going to be very tricky with a handheld system, especially one that people that succeeds a device that people have gotten used to playing on trains, airplanes and in cars. However, the graphics noticeably improve when the 3D’s turned completely off. The new analog nub feels looser than that of the PSP and gave a smooth experience when I played Kid Icarus: Uprising. (More on TIME.com: E3 2010: Masahiro Sakurai Makes Kid Icarus Fly Again on the Nintendo 3DS) That game was used to unveil the 3DS last year and for good reason. The flying combat shows off the added depth to good effect as I played demo sequences where airborne demons attacked heroic angel Pit above the clouds. Pit could choose from one of three weapons. Moving the stylus on the touchscreen on the bottom of the unit controlled the aiming of the targeting reticule. The transition to ground combat delivered some exploration along with the demon fighting, winding up with a dodge-then-shoot boss battle. Capcom showed two different approaches to adapting their games to 3DS. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D took the traditional over-the-shoulder third-person camera view point and lengthened the depth of field. The RE: TM 3D section that was made available played like a shooting gallery, but one where you roamed around the map and picked up health and ammo. It looked very similar to

Nintendo claims that the new 3DS will have the most sophisticated anti-piracy software out there (and is smartly remaining mum on the details). Not that it really matters though: Nintendo UK general manager David Yarnton told CVG that because of an influx of laws against piracy, the “heyday” of buying illegal games is pretty much over. ”There’s definitely a step change coming and you see it in various countries around the world,” he said to the website. “I think perhaps there’s been a ‘heyday of piracy’ and we’ve now seen a lot of rules come in to stop it,” he said. “Recently there’s been some quite significant cases where there were some grey areas as far as IP protection goes,” Yarnton added. ”Recently there have been a couple of rulings with R4s where people have been found guilty and had quite significant sentences against them…. This now makes a precedent that potentially in the future it won’t be a viable thing for people to do.” This comes out in the wake of the report that the Association of UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE) estimates that for every one legitimate game purchased, four are bought illegally. Even at a 1:1 ratio, the organization estimates it will cost about $2.38 billion U.S. dollars in sales a year and about 1,000 fewer jobs for people in the industry. For the 3DS, Nintendo must have come up with something innovative to say it is their toughest anti-piracy technology of all time, but the grim reality is chances are in a matter of weeks or months someone’s going to find a way to crack and mod it.
