Well, that’s certainly one way to complain about news coverage. Hackers claiming to represent Anonymous have announced plans to take down Fox News’ website on November 5 in protest over the network’s coverage of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. Calling the Fox coverage “continued right-wing, conservative propaganda against the occupations,” the hackers explained in a new video that “since [Fox] will not stop belittling the occupiers, we will simply shut them down.” Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and former Fox News personality Glenn Beck are named as “primary targets” for the attack, according to a caption. (MORE: ‘Anonymous’ Forces 40+ Child Pornography Sites Offline) The attack is planned for November 5th, the same day as a previously announced (and potentially fake) Facebook takedown is scheduled to occur. More importantly, it’s also Guy Fawkes’ Day in the U.K., in honor of the terrorist who tried to blow up parliament in the 17th century, and whose likeness has been adopted via the comic and movie V For Vendetta, by Anonymous and its supporters in public appearances. Fox News has not officially responded to the threat but, let’s face it, it’s only a matter of time before the issue is raised on air.
Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo—said to resemble the lovechild of Facebook and Twitter—is reportedly filtering out search results containing the word “occupy” when paired with the names of various places. China Digital Times (CDT) reports: “As the Occupy Wall Street movement goes global, China’s call for calm observation and reflection may have been followed by another round of censorship in cyberspace. A long list of banned keywords on Sina Weibo’s search function has been uncovered and tested by the CDT team yesterday. All the listed phrases stick to one simple rule: a combination of “occupy” (占领) and a place name–provincial capitals, economically developed regions, and few symbolic local areas.” This may not come as that big of a surprise, considering what TIME’s Global Spin blog reported back in August: “Earlier this month, a top Chinese Communist Party official admonished domestic microblog service Weibo to promote the ‘Internet’s healthy development,’ which China-watcher Russell Leigh Moses sees as ‘code words for staying away from topics which attack the rule of the Communist Party or hold officials up for public ridicule.’” [via Good.is]

Twitter is still the social media outlet of choice for Occupy Wall Street, but new analysis into the #OWS tweets has found a surprising gender imbalance in those who’re talking about the protests: Fewer women seem to be doing so, despite Twitter being a female-dominated service overall. According to analysis by Attention released yesterday, only 30% of tweets mentioning Occupy Wall Street were from female users, even though over 64% of all Twitter users are believed to be female as a result of a 2010 Pew survey. That number is actually up from where it was a month earlier; by mid-September, fewer than 20% of Occupy Wall Street tweets were from women. (MORE: Twitter Owns #OccupyWallStreet Chatter) An entirely separate study, carried out by social media monitoring firm Trendrr for AdAge Magazine, sees that number slightly higher; it puts the percentage of female OWS tweets around 38%. But the odd gender discrepancy remains: Is the reason that the women interested in Occupy Wall Street were more likely to get involved with the cause than tweet about it, that the female demographic for Twitter doesn’t have as large a crossover with the OWS demographic as men, or simply that fewer women were interested in tweeting about the subject in general?
If you were part of a network of demonstrators grabbing magazine covers and galvanizing activists across the country, how would you spread the word and keep the momentum building? Twitter? Facebook? Google+? Try Tumblr, the less-everyday-talked-about but no less powerful microblogging service that’s really a mashup of multiple social networking concepts. Think Twitter without the 140-character straitjacket, Facebook and Google+ without the sketchy privacy issues or “to-friend-or-not-friend” mentality, or WordPress, only more easily adapted to social activities like crowdsourcing. Think text, links, images, audio, video and a simple framework for short-form blogging. Tumblr boasts a total 11.4 billion posts and 31.4 million total blogs to date. The service claims just shy of 39 million posts have gone up (so far) today alone. (MORE: Tumblr Gets Much, Much Prettier for iPad and iPhone) And according to Discovery, it’s the platform of choice for the Occupy Wall Street movement, a loosely organized, intentionally leaderless series of demonstrations that began in New York City’s Zuccotti Park, but have since spread across the country. The movement’s goals include protesting economic and social disparity as well as the corrupting influence of corporate money on government. Some compare it to the so-called “Arab Spring” that swept through Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and over a dozen other countries this year. “It is remarkable what a little more than 100,000 Americans, showing up and staying awhile have done in three weeks,” writes consumer activist and five-time presidential candidate Ralph Nader in a piece about the movement. The group’s official site claims it’s preparing for a “day of action” this Saturday, October 15, in over 950 cities and 82 countries. And while OWS is using Facebook, Twitter, Livestream and Reddit to get the word out, the movement’s supporters are apparently flocking to Tumblr. “I am a public school teacher. I have 3 Master’s degrees and no student loan debt. My parents paid for all of my education,” reads a handwritten sign posted yesterday by one OWS supporter on We Are the 99 Percent, a Tumblr blog associated with the OWS movement. “My wife is also a public school

Even as concerns continue to be raised about the lack of media coverage of Occupy Wall Street, one thing is becoming clear: Twitter is handily picking up that slack. Information from data analysis company “Attention” shows that despite reports that activists themselves are moving away from the service, Twitter dominates the OWS social media conversation, with 82.5% of all social media discussion about the protest happening on the microblogging site. Facebook, in comparison, only contributes 2.8%; blogs took up 12.6%, with the remaining amount being split between Flickr, YouTube, news comments and message boards. The “tipping point” for Twitter coverage was found to be the Brooklyn Bridge arrests on October 1st, which caused a staggering 216% increase in the number of tweets about the protest in the following week. Although the number of tweets has decreased since that peak, more Twitter users are continuing to discuss the protests now than before the arrests. Maybe most interestingly, Attention’s analysis reveals that #OccupyWallStreet doesn’t follow the trend for popular Twitter subjects; it peaks on the weekends, and declines during weekdays, suggesting that it’s something more than just a way to kill time during the work day. “Rather than tweet at the convenience of their desks,” explains Attention’s Emily Chambliss, “they used their weekend time to spread awareness of a cause they truly believe in.” MORE: Move Over, Twitter: ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Activists Feel the ‘Vibe’ Graeme McMillan is a reporter at TIME.
It’s the classic good news/bad news situation for Twitter. The good news: It’s looking less likely that the company is going to face accusations that its platform is being used by activists such as the “Occupy Wall Street” protesters to organize, and therefore face legal action as a result. The bad news: It’s because activists seem to be moving onto an entirely new messaging system altogether. The new system in question is called Vibe, according to the New York Daily News, and it was built as an intentionally-anonymous alternative to Twitter by developer Hazem Sayed. The app allows users to share messages with users within certain distances—160 feet to worldwide—that will be automatically deleted within a set amount of time that they control, from 15 minutes to 30 days. (PHOTOS: Occupy Wall Street) According to Sayed, Vibe may be perfect for activists and protesters, but it came from a very different intent: “It seems to have a use case in a gathering like this, but initially it was designed for students and colleges, for people at outdoor events at the park [or other events where you could post] the kind of things you wouldn’t post on Twitter, because it wouldn’t make sense to your followers – it’s very local.” The anonymity is important, he says, as a reaction to other social media: “The Internet, when it started, had this promise of anonymity. That’s largely lost because almost everything is now connected to Facebook or Twitter – even magazines and newspapers and websites use that as a mechanism to sign-in in order to leave comments.” That anonymity is perfect for protesters, of course; the Daily News quotes an Occupy Wall Street activist, Drew Hornbein, as saying “Let’s say you’re protesting and someone up ahead sees that the cops are getting ready to kettle people, they can set out this vibe that only lasts a few minutes that says, ‘Cops are kettling’… It’s anonymous too, so not only are you able to send out relevant information to a small radius, but it
