My TIME.com column this week is about the tenth anniversary of Windows XP—and how it’s managed, against all odds, to remain the world’s most popular operating system, and why that makes some people unhappy. It’s true, of course, that XP’s dominance is degrading. Some numbers are starting to show Windows 7 overtaking it, although more sources still have XP on top. (And in the corporate world, it’s still utterly pervasive.) Someday, using Windows XP will be unusual. (MORE: Why Windows XP Just Won’t Go Away) But will XP ever just go away, period? Maybe, but it’ll take eons. Once companies install Microsoft operating systems, some of them do everything in their power to stick with what they’ve got. And there’s no version of Windows so ancient that it’s not running on some computer, somewhere. XP will be alive in 2020, the year that Microsoft says it’ll stop letting corporate customers “downgrade” to it. Over at my site, Technologizer, the stats for this year to date show that 52 percent of visitors who use Windows arrived at the site using a Windows 7 PC. Thirty-three percent of them used XP. Fourteen percent, Vista. That adds up to 99 percent of the visits to the site that have come from Windows PCs–almost all of them, but not all of them. Under one percent of Windows-using visitors have run another version of the OS. Here’s the breakdown: More than 11,000 people arrived via PCs running Windows Server 2003. About two thousand ran Windows 2000, a version I still miss. A hundred and forty used Windows 98. Thirty-one poor souls used Windows Me. Three have ran Windows 95. And one guy or gal–I’d love to meet this person, shake his or her hand, and then ask “WHY?”–was using Windows 3.1, a version that theoretically became obsolete in 1995. For some people, any version of Windows remains too newfangled a product to trust. Earlier this week, I parked at a garage in San Francisco, and when I returned to pay and retrieve my car, I

First there was the iPhone. Then came Android. And everyone was like, “Android’s great but it’s no iPhone!” Now everyone’s like, “Android’s great, look out iPhone!” Then David Wang cut the fluff and made it so you can install Android on your iPhone. The previously covered Android-to-iPhone hack now has a how-to writeup and code download over at PC World. And if you think it’s as simple as downloading an app to your phone and hitting the pretty little icon, you’re in for a bit of disappointment. It’s “not for the faint of heart” as they say. You’ll need: “A first-generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G with firmware versions between 2.0 and 3.1.2, jailbroken with Redsn0w, Blacksn0w, or PwnageTool. If you already updated your handset to 3.1.3 or to a 4.0 beta, you must use PwnageTool to create a jailbroken 3.1.2 .ipsw file to restore down to.” It’s also recommended that you familiarize yourself with how to get your iPhone into recovery mode and DFU mode, you’ll have to use the command-line interface, and there’s a whole bunch of other jibber jabber that makes this look like a weekend project. And to be clear, it doesn’t work on the iPhone 3GS, iPad, or iPod Touch models—just the iPhone and iPhone 3G. If you meet all the prerequisites, though, you can whip yourself up a dual-booting iPhone with some Android goodness. via Engadget More on Techland: Android Running On The iPhone A Practical Guide To Android [Update] Verizon Working With Google On Android Tablet

Though HP has confirmed that it’ll load Palm’s webOS on tablet PCs and even printers, Monty Wong of HP Taiwan has said that the company’s netbooks will not be running the mobile-friendly operating system “since netbooks are more similar in functions with traditional computers,” according to DigiTimes. Also, the HP Slate that we were all expecting to see in June apparently may not show up until October now, presumably so HP can rework it with webOS instead of Windows 7. I’m still hoping that HP will load both webOS and Windows 7 on the Slate, personally, but we’ll see what happens. HP hasn’t set an actual date for the revamped Slate beyond saying it’ll be available before the end of its fiscal year, which is October 31st. So maybe tomorrow, maybe October 31st—sometime in between.
VentureBeat is reporting that “Acer will launch Chrome OS devices at the Computex Taipei show, which will be held from June 1 to June 5.” That’s according to “multiple sources,” though it’s not to say that the “launch” will mean that the devices will be available for purchase in June. I have a feeling Acer won’t be the only one showing off Chrome OS machines at the show. Chrome OS, you’ll recall, is Google’s upcoming browser-based operating system for netbooks and smartbooks. It’s been widely reported that consumer devices running Chrome OS wouldn’t make it into consumers’ hands until the 2010 holiday season, but if Acer’s somehow able to start shipping portable computers running the operating system sooner than that, it’ll give the company a decent head start. That’s assuming consumers take to Chrome OS, of course. There’s been some fence-sitting about whether having all your data stored online and no ability to install and run programs directly from Chrome OS machines will be acceptable to potential customers. However if the computers are priced low enough, say $200 or less, and pitched as portable web browsing appliances, your average Facebook-loving, e-mail-checking consumers might not mind.
