I don’t know for a fact that Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch director Ken Motomura or writer Akihiro Hino ever fooled with the Ultima computer roleplaying games, but if I had to guess, I’d bet they did. Or someone at Level 5 did, because man, the collector’s edition is like hopping into a time-machine and rolling back to the days roleplaying games actually came with stuff. No, I don’t mean the sort of post-Todd McFarlane toy porn you get with today’s crazy-priced, limited game editions: monster-sized boxes harboring ornate polymer statues no one has room to display or probably much desire to explain to passerby. “This one is of Alduin the world eater perched on a word wall!” sounds like something 40-year-old Andy Stitzer might say, because it is. I’m talking about the Wizard Edition of Ni no Kuni, which sold out so fast (the “in stock” disclaimer on the official sale page has been wrong for months) I paid close to three times the asking price to land a copy. It arrived in an unassuming box with a suspiciously Yoshitaka Amano/Final Fantasy-like box logo — an embossed version of the one on the PS3 case sleeve; I was more than a little concerned, prying the cardboard flaps open. I blew my rainy day fund on this? But stuffed inside was something I hadn’t come across in ages: a suspiciously Ultima-like tome. And I mean tome: I’m talking about a novel-length book, clocking in at over 300 pages (beating even Ultima by a mile) that details the game’s elaborate world, its bestiary (replete with lovely little color sketches), its alchemic and magical systems and so forth. Those of you playing the game (or who’ve long since finished it) know this as the Wizard’s Companion, because the developers were kind of enough to fold it into the actual game and gameplay, where you can unlock pages as you go; find them all, and I’m pretty sure there’s a trophy involved. GOG.com Richard Garriott has a thing about this. Those of you who’ve not only

Last week Sony released a surprise three-quel PlayStation 3 -- an even slimmer, lighter rendition of its six-year-old games console. It then dropped that into a new bundle, raised the price by $20 and declared it “the ultimate gaming and entertainment system choice for those of you looking for the best value this holiday season.” So is it?

If you woke to the news yesterday morning wondering why Sony chose the Tokyo Game Show to out a new slimmer-than-slim PlayStation 3, well, just do the math: The PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 in Japan roughly six to one, whereas Sony’s set-top lags behind Microsoft's Xbox 360 in unit sales by around 15 million units this side of the pond.

Effective immediately, Sony’s PlayStation 3 is $50 cheaper. The home game system now costs $249 for a 160 GB model, or $299 for a 320 GB model. As far as price cuts go, the PS3′s is pretty straightforward. Sony is offering a limited edition 320 GB console with Infamous 2 for $299, but otherwise there’s no additional effort to pack in a PlayStation Move or to hook people into 3D gaming. (Sony will, however, offer a standalone Move and game bundle later this year, and plans to bundle a PS3, a game and small 3D TV with PlayStation branding this fall, as announced at E3in June.) (MORE: PS Vita Bumped to 2012—Your Move, Nintendo) All eyes will now be on Microsoft to cut the price of its Xbox 360, which currently costs $200 for a basic 4 GB console or $300 when bundled with either the Kinect motion sensing camera or a 250 GB hard drive. However, Microsoft is dominating the U.S. console market right now, and may not feel the pressure to make a price cut right away. It’s safe to guess, at least, that Microsoft will do something to sell more Kinect units as it prepares a major Kinect software pushfor the holidays. Nintendo, you’ll recall, already cut the Wii’s price to $150 after retooling its pack-in software. But I wouldn’t rule out some bigger bundles or lower prices as the holiday season approaches — especially with the Wii U scheduled to launch in 2012. Sony probably knows that the holidays will bring good deals from Nintendo and Microsoft, and is cutting the PS3′s price now to get a jump on sales. Last time the PS3 got a price cut in 2009, retailers added free games to their PS3 bundles during the holiday shopping season. If you’re in the market for a game console but can hold off for a few months, you’ll likely get more for your money. This article originally appeared on Technologizer...
The closest thing gamers have to a holy pilgrimage comes in the form of the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. E3 takes over the Los Angeles Convention Center for only three days every year, but entire weeks leading up to the show are filled with hype and rumors about what games and hardware will be shown and announced. This year’s no different. In fact, the stakes feel higher in 2011 than they have in some time. New hardware from Nintendo and Sony will make its debut, and top-secret unannounced titles will step out from the shadows. On top of all that, a number of existing franchises will either have ambitious sequels or aggressive reboots jockeying for gamers’ attention. While our coverage doesn’t really begin in earnest until next week, here’s a rundown of things that we’re already excited about. Mass Effect 3 What We Know Already: The last part of BioWare’s epic space trilogy was supposed to come out later this year, but got pushed back to 2012. Commander Shepard’s ongoing battle to stop the Reapers–an evil machine race bent on destroying all organic life–moves to Earth in a final desperate bid to save the universe. For all the action they provide, the Mass Effect games are really one big space opera where relationships carry over from each game. In a move many fans applauded, BioWare announced that ME3 will offer same-sex relationships for male and female characters for the first time. So assuming your Commander Shepard saves the universe, she or he will get a victory kiss from whomever you want that to be. The Big Mystery: It’s long been rumored that the threequel will add some sort of multiplayer to the Mass Effect series for the first time. While the structure of the main storyline doesn’t appear to be capable of supporting multiplayer, the sure-to-be-bigger scale of the battles in Mass Effect 3 offer plenty of opportunities for multiplayer. I think we’ll wind up seeing co-op and competitive multiplayer modes in the style of Gears of

Adding to Sony’s ongoing hack-attack tribulations, Microsoft’s taking a victory lap today, claiming its Xbox 360 games console outsold Sony’s PlayStation 3 during the first four months of 2011. Microsoft claims that, life-to-date, it’s sold 55 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide (out of 38 countries) and that “sales are accelerating.” In an almost exultant press statement, the company said the Xbox 360 was still the top selling U.S. console for 2011 (the numbers jibe with NPD Group data) as well as “ten of the past eleven months,” before delivering the coup de grace: In the first four months of 2011, Xbox 360 has seen a 29 percent year over year increase in sales, which is more than triple the growth of PlayStation 3 and the largest growth of any console on the market. 2010 was the Xbox 360′s best year ever, says Microsoft, claiming 2011 “will be another record year,” and adding—it seems accurately, if a bit smugly—that “no other console in history can make that claim six years into their lifecycle.” What else. There’s Xbox LIVE, which Microsoft says can lay claim to nearly 35 million “active” members, spending “an average of 60 hours a month on the service” (the company embellishes by noting that amounts to “2.1 billion entertainment hours a month”). And for streaming media biz enthusiasts, the company says users are today sucking down three times as many videos today as they were a year ago. Sounding a bit Apple-ish, the company celebrates the Xbox 360′s diversity by referring to “the magic of Kinect.” Forget the magical thinking part: Microsoft says it’s sold over 10 million Kinect sensors as well as “more than 10 million standalone Kinect games” globally. That’s actually a bit of a dismal figure, since it indicates an attach rate of 1-to-1—an industry low as console-game attach rates go. See the chart up top for Microsoft’s back-of-the-envelope-inside-a-spreadsheet breakdown. The company’s “normalized” console sales to show how the Xbox 360′s broken away from the pack in the U.S. to approach Nintendo’s Wii and, surprisingly,

You just picked up Codemasters’ grit-flinging, gravel-grinding rally racer DiRT 3 for PlayStation 3, and let me guess—you can’t play online or swap YouTube video replays with pals. Bummer. You’re not alone. It’s because the PS3 version requires a special piece of downloadable code to put its online mode in gear. And since that code’s technically a slice of online store-based DLC, you need access to the PlayStation Store to grab it. But the PlayStation Store’s still on the fritz, despite Sony’s restoration of basic PlayStation Network services. Long story short, you’re stuff-outta-luck if you pick up the PS3 version with online aspirations, your only alternatives being to grab the Xbox 360 or PC version, or you know, wait. How long? Sony’s last word on the matter was “we’re still targeting restoration of all services by the end of this month.” So with any luck, by the close of Memorial Day Weekend. For the record, it’s not a matter of flipping switches to remove the DLC gate, claims Codemasters. The DiRT 3 publisher/developer told CVG that “it’s technically not possible, as it’s hard-coded into the game.” Translation: it is technically possible, but if the PS Store’s up in a few more days, it’d take the company notably longer to get a patch ready, approved, and deployed. DiRT 3 rolled off shelves yesterday to rave reviews. Edge calls it “[a] vast, almost encyclopedic look at the united nations of rally,” VideoGamer says “[it's] got the looks, the style, the superb sense of speed, and spot-on handling model that blurs the line between sim and arcade,” and Digital Chumps writes “[more] races, more cars, better controls and a huge Gymkhana [obstacle-riddled, timed motorsport courses] presence means that you’re in for a truly great experience.” DiRT 3‘s DLC activation code is part of Codemasters’ attempt to work around the used games issue. The code’s free for first-time users, but costs $10 for anyone attempting to activate a used copy. Codemasters isn’t alone in crafting this sort of “you shall not pass” tech.
Your worldwide network hacked, your online service in shambles, over 75 million user accounts compromised, US Senators writing letters scolding you for keeping mum longer than you should’ve–if Sony’s had worse weeks, I couldn’t name one. (More on TIME.com: Watch 9 crazy people go all “Office Space” on their PlayStations) That’s right, today marks the one-week anniversary of the PlayStation Network outage, and to celebrate, we’ve pulled together a list of everything we know so far about what’s quickly become the most piled-on tech story of 2011 to date. What Happened Last Wednesday, April 20th, the PlayStation Network as well as Sony’s Qriocity media streaming service mysteriously ceased to work. Late in the day, Sony said it was “aware certain functions of PlayStation Network [were] down” and that it would report back “soon” with more information. On Thursday, April 21st, Sony noted it was “investigating the cause of the Network outage” and that it might be “a full day or two” before service would resume. On Friday, April 22nd, Sony revealed an “external intrusion” had “affected” its PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, and that it voluntarily “turned off” both to “conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation” of its network services rolling forward. On Saturday, April 23rd, Sony said the fix involved “re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure,” and that while the task was “time-consuming,” it was “worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.” Skipping to Monday, April 25th, Sony said it had nothing new to say about the outage, and no “timeframe to share at this point in time.” On Tuesday, April 26th, the proverbial you-know-what hit the fan, as Sony surprised over 75 million PSN users (and the world watching) by admitting “a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on [its] systems.” Sony said the compromise occurred between April 17th and 19th, and that it involved personal information (names, addresses, birthdates, etc.), PSN/Qriocity account login names and passwords, and user transactional histories (purchases, billing addresses, etc.). The company cautioned that credit card information might have

Welcome to day six of Sony’s PlayStation Network debacle, as Sony’s original suggestion of “a full day or two” offline stretches to nearly a week. We’re no closer to an explanation than we were six days ago, though the company’s intimated in a handful of laconic PlayStation blog updates that the trouble began with an “external intrusion,” and that it preemptively took the service offline with intent to “rebuild” something less susceptible to hacking. [UPDATE: Sony Admits Personal Info at Risk, Claims PSN Back Up In a Week] While we wait, let’s talk a little about firmware. When speaking of the PlayStation 3, “firmware” refers to its brain-center–the software that dictates what the console’s capable of doing each time you boot up. Both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable allow users to manually install firmware, in the event they’re not able to pull the update down over the Internet. That option’s also made it possible over the years for hackers to install customized firmware, essentially unlocking features Sony reserves for developers. A user claiming to be a moderator for a popular PS3 downloads forum has an intriguing (if highly speculative) theory up on Reddit about why the PSN went down. This user notes the outage corresponds loosely with the release of Rebug, a firmware tool that unlocks development features in a retail PS3. According to the theory, Rebug PS3 users may have gained access to Sony’s private developer network (the so-called “external intrusion”), entered fake credit card information (unchecked against an authentication service, this user reasons, since the network is private), and were thus able to pull down PSN content like gluttons feeding at trough. Now again, we’re talking about highly–as in looking down at the clouds from the tip-top of Mt. Everest highly–speculative theorizing here. If we just take Sony at its word, all we know for sure is that the trigger was someone (or a group of someones) gaining illicit access to the PlayStation Network. We don’t know which aspect of the PSN Sony’s referring to, or whether the

A holiday weekend without Portal 2 or Mortal Kombat matchups, a five-day grand total of uninterrupted void, and yes, Sony’s PlayStation Network remains in the fetal position as we pull into Monday, April 25. [UPDATE: Sony Admits Personal Info at Risk, Claims PSN Back Up In a Week] We still know virtually nothing about what happened, or why. Sony says the outage is its own fault, that it shut the PlayStation Network down preemptively after an “external intrusion.” The implication is thus that the PSN might have continued to run otherwise. Sony shut things down voluntarily to ensure things were smooth “going forward.” That’s as dramatic a move as they come. It’s Sony admitting the PlayStation Network had fatal security and performance holes. What else would prompt the world’s fifth largest media monolith to–without warning last Wednesday, April 20–cut off over 70 million PSN customers, then keep them offline for going on a week? Sony’s latest informational update, posted on Saturday, reiterates that both the PlayStation Network and Qriocity (Sony’s media streaming service) have been “suspended”: Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security. My bet is that Sony was aware, well before this outage, that the PlayStation Network had certain innate and terminal vulnerabilities. The network was brought low recently due to attacks by hacktivist group Anonymous. No doubt Sony’s network and systems engineers had their plates full poring over router and server logs, identifying holes, applying band-aids, and positing long-term solutions. Those solutions likely involved re-architecting the system to bolster its defenses. In fact I’d wager Sony’s info-tech elite already put it in the form of an ultimatum to Sony corporate, something like “Either do this, or we’re operating with a target on our backs.” This latest “intrusion” (Anonymous claims it wasn’t involved) simply served as an “opportunity” to implement those changes. I called the outage a “disaster” for Sony last
