Something funny’s going on with Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld. As Joystiq reports, several Sony stores around the United States are selling the 3G Vita for $200, which is $50 less than the Wi-Fi-only model. Some other stores told Joystiq that Sony is discontinuing the 3G model altogether. Meanwhile, Sony’s online store has dropped the price of the 3G PS Vita down to $250 — same as its Wi-Fi counterpart. That 3G bundle also comes with an 8 GB memory card and a free PSN game. It gets weirder. If you go to GameStop’s PS Vita landing page right now, the retailer only lists refurbished units and a $300 bundle of games and hardware. If you want to buy a new, standalone Vita from GameStop, you can’t; the full list of Vita hardware on GameStop’s website shows that all models are out of stock, both Wi-Fi and 3G, with the exception of that $300 bundle. Best Buy is still selling the 3G Vita for $300, but only for in-store pickups. I’ve reached out to Sony to find out what’s going on, and will update if I get a response. (Update: ”The reduction in price is the result of a limited time sales promotion through retail,” says Sony.) In the meantime, consider that Sony recently dropped the price of the PS Vita in Japan — a move that reportedly quadrupled sales. It’s not crazy to think that a U.S. price cut for the PS Vita is imminent, despite the insistence to the contrary by Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida. The other possibility is that Sony is preparing a 4G LTE version of the Vita, which would of course greatly improve data speeds on the handheld. But the only evidence I can find on that front is one pretty sketchy rumor. As my colleague Matt Peckham wrote back in August, the Vita’s $250-and-up price tag is just too high compared to what people expect for a handheld, and sales have been predictably slow. This creates a vicious cycle where software makers become afraid

The Tokyo Game Show is home turf for Sony and Nintendo, the Japanese companies still regarded as heavyweights in the video game business. While Nintendo held their own 3DS-centric event just preceding the annual game gathering, Sony’s press conference marked the official kick-off of TGS and details about the new Vita handheld took center stage at the PlayStation presser. When the new portable Playstation hits on 12/17/2011, there’ll be a launch library of 26 games accompanying it. Among the most notable new announcements are HD remakes of Metal Gear Sold and Final Fantasy X (marking its 10th anniversary), a Vita version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and an all-new Katamari Damacy game. As previously reported, Japanese cellular provider NTT Docomo will be providing 3G wireless connectivity for the Vita; its tiered pricing plans were detailed last night as well. (MORE: NGP vs. 3DS vs. iOS vs. Android: Which Gaming Platform Will Earn Your Love?) A 20-hour plan for ¥980 ($13) offers 20 hours of gaming and, at ¥4,980 ($65) the 100-hour plan will offer 100 hours of gaming as a little extra bonus. There doesn’t appear to be any rollover and you’ll lose whatever hours you don’t use during the 30-day or 180-day windows, for the 20- and 100-hour plans, respectively. Whether this price structure and plan is indicative of what AT&T will do when Vita launches in U.S. wasn’t elaborated on. Sony also introduced a place-shifting feature called “Transfarring” with some of the HD remakes, where you’ll be able to start playing Metal Gear Solid and Zone of the Enders on the PS3 and continue those games on the Vita. So far, only those two games are confirmed to use the terribly-named gimmick. While Vita will use a new proprietary storage format for games, most of the downloadable PSP catalog will work on the device, with certain titles making use of the dual analog sticks. The big question for backwards compatibility, though, is UMD support since the last specialized media used for the previous Sony gaming handheld won’t be

Exhaustion’s the only appropriate response after the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo. Even if you’re only watching at home, it’s dizzying trying to keep up with all the news, hype and announcements that emanate from the Los Angeles Convention Center. Hundreds of games jockey for attention, and inevitably, some garner more buzz than others. While this year’s conversations were dominated by Nintendo’s announcement of the Wii U and Sony’s official naming of the PlayStation Vita (the portable device formerly known as the NGP), other developments of import popped up as well. In no particular order, here’s the best of the new from this year’s E3:

You’ve got to hand it to Sony. In the face of a humiliating security breach and three-week-long PlayStation Network outage, they didn’t go for the “these aren’t the hacks you’re looking for” Jedi mind trick. They addressed the issue straight on, acknowledging that the outage happened, admitting that they may have lost some of their customers and thanking the ones that stayed for their loyalty. SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said that PS Network activity is at 90% of what it was before the outage. Still, there was an air of finality about their infrastructure woes that’s probably a misnomer, as they’re apparently going to be dealing with threats across various corporate divisions for a while yet. Nevertheless, it’s been an otherwise promising year for PlayStation and they unveiled the slate for the next year with a lot of enthusiasm. First up was an Uncharted 3 live gameplay demo. Series hero Nathan Drake stands on the deck of a decrepit cruise ship, getting his sea legs. A Naughty Dog developer played the demo and initiated stealth attacks on some armed thugs in rapid succession. But, Drake wound up trapped by a merc captain in a dead end hold of the ship. He then grabs the grenade from the merc leader’s belt and blows a hole open in the wall. Water rushes in, creating wet chaos. A gunfight ensues, and we get to see one of the hero’s new melee moves, a painful disarm that leaves an enemy’s weapon in Drake’s hands. The boat capsizes, and a few gorgeous swimming sequences later, Drake winds up on solid ground thinking he’s safe. Suddenly, a torrent of water crashes through a door behind him and throws him violently at the camera, with a fade to black ending the demo. Uncharted 3 looks like it’s ramping up everything about the franchise to ridiculous degrees. Massive bodies of water, sand and fire, burlier combat and an added layer of narrative mystery should make Naughty Dog’s latest effort nearly impossible to wait for. For what it’s worth,
