Like people, companies are also capable of improving themselves, as long as they're self-aware enough to understand their own weaknesses. With that in mind--and with New Year's Day almost upon us--I'd like to politely suggest a few resolutions that would make great tech companies even better. (Judging from the behavior of some pretty big outfits in 2011, they could use the advice.)

RIM Launches BBM Music, and It’s Doomed Already

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is forging ahead with its BBM Music offering, an attempt at creating a viral music service that will probably fall flat. BBM Music launches today with a free 60-day trial, and costs $5 per month thereafter. Here’s how it works: You pick 50 songs for your music library. If you know anyone who’s also a subscriber, their 50 songs become part of your library as well. You can make playlists from these songs and cache them for offline listening. Every month, you can swap out up to half of those songs for 25 others, and your friends can do the same. (MORE: The Future of Blackberry is “BBX”) I get what RIM is trying to do. The company is trying to create a music service that spreads among many BlackBerry users. If it’s successful, it’ll provide RIM with some extra revenue while encouraging users to stick with their BlackBerry phones instead of going with the iPhone, Android or Windows Phones. But I’m guessing it won’t be successful, for several reasons: First, think of how many people you know who own a BlackBerry, and whose phones aren’t tied to some corporate account that most certainly isn’t participating in BBM Music. Unless you’re willing to go online and share your BBM information with meet random people who want to share their music tastes with you, your potential music pool probably isn’t that big, especially considering the $5 per month requirement. And for that price, the default number of songs you get is laughably small. If you assume an average song length of four minutes, you’re getting a little less than three-and-a-half hours of music. You’re going to get tired of those songs, but you can only switch half of them for new music every month. Besides, if you’re going to pay for a monthly subscription music service, you might as well pay $10 a month for Spotify, Rhapsody, MOG or Rdio, all of which give you millions of songs with no restrictions, social or otherwise. And unlike BBM

Research in Motion’s tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, has been overshadowed of late, which may be the reason behind the company’s latest promotion: Buy two PlayBook tablets, get one free. Yes, that’s right, tablets have now become so ubiquitous that we’re buying them in bulk. The deal, which applies to the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, will run through the end of 2011 for its business customers. It could be that RIM is admitting defeat in the retail space and going back to its bread and butter business. The company is definitely in a tough spot. (WATCH: How the BlackBerry Tablet Is Different) The 16GB PlayBook is the same price ($499) as the much more popular 16GB iPad 2. Sure, they could try making it cheaper, but they’re probably never going to be able to compete with the Kindle Fire on price, seeing as Amazon cares more about making money off content than losing money on the Kindle Fire’s $199 price tag. Eyebrows were raised a month ago when it looked like Best Buy was selling the PlayBook for only $299. A visit to Best Buy’s website now reveals that prices have returned to normal. So, how do you market a tablet that our own Harry McCracken called “tremendously disappointing“? Apparently by trying to get businesses to snap up PlayBooks for their employees. The one edge that BlackBerry devices do have is that IT departments love them; the PlayBook is no different, working with restrictive corporate email systems. Of course, plenty of business already have smaller, more convenient devices that already do that: BlackBerry smartphones.
I don’t mean to be painfully Pollyannaish, but I’m almost glad that RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis didn’t announce any new products or other major news at the keynote during its DevCon conference in San Francisco, which I attended on Tuesday morning. A year ago, at the 2010 edition of the event, he unveiled the PlayBook tablet. I got all excited. When it finally shipped months later, it was tremendously disappointing. This year, the upcoming products that matter for RIM are the first BlackBerry phones based on the company’s new QNX-based operating system–which Lazaridis did say will be called BBX, and which will presumably come out next year. If RIM had provided a sneak peak at them at DevCon, it wouldn’t have helped matters and might have hurt. All that really matters is that they’re great when they finally come out. Who cares how unfinished versions look in a controlled demo? (MORE: The BlackBerry PlayBook: Another Interesting Unfinished Product) DevCon 2011, which continues today, has been mostly devoted to brass-tacks information aimed at people who write software for RIM devices. That’s fine; that’s what developer conferences are for. But I do wish that Lazaridis, or somebody, had laid out RIM’s vision as a company and as a maker of technology products. Instead, he began his keynote by briefly apologizing for last week’s outage and trumpeting some impressive-sounding sales stats. Then he dived right into technical stuff. It’s pretty apparent what kind of devices Apple wants to make. I get what’s important to Google’s Android folks. Even though Microsoft’s Windows Phone isn’t catching on with consumers, the company has a strategy. But RIM? I don’t have a clue about what it’s trying to do. That wasn’t always the case: For years, it thrived in part because it had such clarity of vision. It wanted to build excellent phones centered around reliable e-mail and calendaring that delivered features that businesses cared about. It did. And then the world changed, and RIM failed to change with it. (MORE: The Tragic Decline of BlackBerry) I

BlackBerry owners frustrated by last week’s service outage—the longest in RIM’s history—will have access to “a selection of premium apps worth a total value of more than US $100,” according to a company press release. The apps will become available starting on Wednesday, with additional titles added to the list over the next four weeks. The first round of apps include the following: • SIMS 3 – Electronic Arts • Bejeweled – Electronic Arts • N.O.V.A. – Gameloft • Texas Hold’em Poker 2 – Gameloft • Bubble Bash 2 – Gameloft • Photo Editor Ultimate – Ice Cold Apps • DriveSafe.ly Pro – iSpeech.org • iSpeech Translator Pro – iSpeech.org • Drive Safe.ly Enterprise – iSpeech.org • Nobex Radio Premium – Nobex • Shazam Encore – Shazam • Vlingo Plus: Virtual Assistant – Vlingo They’ll be available as free downloads until the end of the year and, again, additional titles will be added over the coming weeks. As for RIM’s enterprise customers, they’ll also get a free month of technical support. This make-good offer from RIM is obviously not the monetary reimbursement some users had hoped for. As our own Harry McCracken points out on his Technologizer blog, “As I read that list, I suffer from pangs of cognitive dissonance. Corporate E-mail is important stuff, and delivering it reliably is utterly core to RIM’s mission and reputation. Free poker games feel like an off-topic way of making up for an e-mail outage. What would be more appropriate? Well, how about cash?” RIM’s developer conference takes place this week, so it’ll be interesting to see if the recent outage overshadows the company’s announcements about new products and future plans.
Research in Motion co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie held a phone-in press conference this morning to announce that BlackBerry services have been "fully restored" around the world. "On Monday we had a hardware failure," began Lazaridis, who went on to explain that one of the company’s data switches failed in Europe, at which point "the backup switch didn’t function as intended." (MORE: RIM Apologizes: ‘Not Even Close’ on BlackBerry Uptime This Week) The hardware failure resulted in a backlog of BlackBerry messages and emails, which created a cascade effect that ultimately overloaded RIM’s data centers elsewhere around the world. Lazaridis said RIM would be auditing its infrastructure to determine the cause of the failure and working with its hardware vendors to fix the problem with the switch. He wouldn’t say which company provided RIM with the switch—only commenting that several parts from different vendors comprise the system in question and that it’d be "premature" to name a particular vendor. "We don’t know why the switch failed in the particular way it did," said Lazaridis. This week’s BlackBerry outage is the largest in its 12-year history, a fact that was confirmed by both Lazaridis and Balsillie. As for questions about compensating customers for downtime, the co-CEOs mentioned that their focus was to get the system back online, and they’ll now be focusing on how they’ll make up for the outage with BlackBerry owners. The question also arose about whether RIM was worried that some customers would defect to the iPhone or Android platforms. "We’ve worked 12 years since the launch of BlackBerry to win the trust of our users, and we’re going to work hard to win that trust back," said Lazaridis. BlackBerry services have been fully restored as of "early this morning," according to Lazaridis, who continued on to say that they’re now "flushing through the queue" of backlogged messages. Any delays right now are purely the backlog of messages that have built up. Certain BlackBerry devices may have lost synchronization with servers, which Lazaridis said can be remedied

FOLLOW-UP: RIM: BlackBerry Service ‘Has Been Fully Restored’ "Since launching BlackBerry in 1999, it’s been my goal to provide reliable, real-time communications around the world," begins RIM founder an Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis’ apology video, "We did not deliver on that goal this week." "Not even close." Lazaridis goes on to say that BlackBerry customers expect better, he expects better, they’re working tirelessly, but it’s too soon to say the issue is fully resolved yet. "I’d like to give you an estimated time of full recovery around the world," says Lazaridis, "but I cannot do this with certainty at this time." Aside from the above video, the latest entry on RIM’s update page reads: "In Europe, Middle East, India and Africa, we are seeing a significant increase in service levels. Service levels are also progressing well in the U.S., Canada and Latin America and we are seeing increased traffic throughput on most services, although there are still some delays and services levels may still vary amongst customers. Our global teams are continuing to work as quickly as possible to restore full and consistent service across all regions." That update was left at 11:30pm Central last night.
BlackBerry service interruptions have been making their way across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India and parts of South America over the past couple of days, with reports now surfacing that customers in the U.S. and Canada are experiencing problems as well. Research in Motion, makers of the BlackBerry devices, took to the BlackBerry Facebook page yesterday with the following statement: “The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated, and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience, and we will continue to keep you informed.” We’re seeing numerous outages at TIME headquarters in New York this morning. Anyone else in the U.S. or Canada having problems?
BlackBerry PlayBook price, come on down, you’re the next—or actually, first—contestant on The Price Wasn’t Right, But We’ll Fix That, in view of the Android-based Kindle Fire, which Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled Wednesday for just $199. RIM’s PlayBook had been going for between $299 and $499, depending on model, but retailer Best Buy just slashed the price on all three models (16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB) by $200 each. If that sounds like a desperate, reactionary move to you, you wouldn’t be alone: Analysts are saying as much in the Kindle Fire’s wake left and right. (MORE: Could Amazon’s Kindle Fire Dethrone Apple’s iPad?) “We believe RIM has stopped production of its PlayBook and is actively considering exiting the tablet market,” said Collins Stewart tech analyst John Vinh (via Barron’s), noting that PlayBook manufacturer Quanta has let go of a “significant number” of employees. According to Vinh: While Quanta last week acknowledged that it had laid off a significant number of production workers from a factory focused on producing the PlayBook, our research indicates that the ODM has essentially halted production of the tablet. Additionally, our due diligence indicates that RIMM has canceled development of additional tablet projects. And DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim adds fuel to that fire, claiming DisplaySearch’s supply chain research “indicates they [Quanta] don’t have production plans for PlayBooks beyond this year.” But don’t tell RIM. The company quickly shrugged off Vinh’s take, calling it “pure fiction,” and stating that RIM “remains highly committed to the tablet market.” Some in the media are claiming Staples and Office Depot have also dropped the PlayBook’s price, though a quick scan of Staples’ website shows the cheapest model (16GB) still selling for $499. Office Depot’s site shows the PlayBook discounted across all models, but by $100 each instead of Best Buy’s $200. Given the disparity in retailer PlayBook discounting (and analyst supply chain speculation notwithstanding), it’s possible we’re looking at a one-off product dump. Best Buy’s probably hoping to offload its PlayBook inventory for its own reasons, some of

Feeling pretty right-on about your Android phone these days? So do plenty of your fellow Americans, it sounds like, according to another one of Nielsen’s monthly surveys. This one, conducted in August, found that 43% of all U.S. smartphone owners have an Android device. Not bad, but change up the question and timeframe, and you find that—of those that snagged a new smartphone in the past three months—over half (56%) say they selected an Android phone. Nielsen adds, albeit superfluously, that “[the] preferences of these so-called ‘recent acquirers’ are important as they are often a leading indicator of where the market is going.” No kidding. (LIST: Top 20 Must-Have Android Apps) In second place, Apple’s iOS, with 28% of the smartphone subscriber total, on par with its slice of the “three month recent acquirers” pie, which indicates iOS sales aren’t increasing but holding steady. Expect that to change (you know, on the order of an atomic explosion) when the iPhone 5 goes live, as it’s rumored to, sometime next month.

So much for RIM’s brief PlayBook sales “surge” to “4.9% of the tablet market”: The company’s losing market share “much faster than expected to rivals Apple and Google,” reports Reuters this morning. RIM took another bath in red ink yesterday, when it revealed its quarterly profits had plummeted, sending the company’s shares tumbling in after hours trading. The disappointing quarterly earnings report was RIM’s third in a row, too, bottoming out the company’s already downgraded yearlong outlook. (MORE: IDC: iPad 2, PlayBook Gobbled Android Market Share Last Quarter) Analysts paint a bleak picture for RIM, telling Reuters the company’s hemorrhaging has spread internationally (referencing slowdown in the U.K.), accusing RIM of being in “blatant denial” and claiming that RIM’s already very pessimistic full year outlook isn’t pessimistic enough. “The co-CEOs do not recognize the failure of the Playbook and continue to sell its merits in terms of security,” said Sanders Bernstein analyst Pierre Feragu, pointing to a heart-stopping decline in PlayBook shipments—from half a million to just 200,000 in a single quarter. Then there’s National Bank Financial, one of whose analyst’s calls the PlayBook “nothing short of a disaster.” “Our view is the company is garnering lower profitability on its service revenue, which is the monthly infrastructure fee charged to carriers based on the number of active BlackBerry subscribers,” said National Bank analysts, downgrading RIM’s stock from “sector perform” to a stinging “underperform.” But don’t tell that to RIM co-CEO’s Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie. In a conference call after RIM’s earnings results were released, Balsillie spoke of a PlayBook software update dubbed “PlayBook 2.0,” and Lazaridis claimed the company would be back in the black by the third quarter and going forward.
It looks like both Apple’s iPad 2 and RIM’s PlayBook took a fairly big bite out of Android OS’s tablet market share in the second quarter of 2011. Market intelligence firm International Data Corporation reports that iPad 2 market share rose in Q2 2011, while Android’s collective tablet market share fell precipitously. RIM’s PlayBook debuted in the second quarter, snatching 4.9% of the tablet market, and Apple’s iPad 2 rose from 65.7% during the first quarter to 68.3% during the second. Android-based tablets fell from 34% during the first quarter to 26.8% during the second. (MORE: Apple’s iPad Poised to Dominate Through 2020?) Around the world, tablet shipments were up nearly 90% year-to-date and nearly 304% year-on-year, topping out at 13.6 million units, says IDC. The greater-than-expected growth prompted the intelligence provider to boost its global tablet sales projections for the second half of 2011 to 62.5 million units, up from 53.5 million units. IDC attributes surging global tablet sales to “robust demand” for the iPad 2 (no surprise), noting the iPad 2 shipped 9.3 million units in Q2 2011. What’s next? Expect further erosion of Android’s tablet market share (IDC says it’ll drop to just 23%), but that things should pick up in the fourth quarter, allowing Android to regain a few points and land near 26%. Complicating matters: HP’s orphaned TouchPad, which customers scooped up in droves when HP dropped the price to just $99 on August 18, less than seven weeks after the webOS-based tablet debuted. IDC says it expects “close to a million TouchPads to ship into the channel before the end of the year,” raising webOS’s market share to a respectable 4.7% in 3Q 2011 (though IDC says it’ll be back to zero by early next year). “Media tablet shipments grew at a solid pace in the second quarter, led by continued strong demand for Apple products,” said Tom Mainelli, a research director for Mobile Connected Devices. “We expect shipment totals to continue to grow in the third and fourth quarter, as additional vendors introduce more price-competitive Android

Make no mistake about it: The Bold 9900 is the best BlackBerry smartphone to date. But even with a handsome redesign highlighted by a new capacitive touchscreen (plus all the familiar features that make a BlackBerry a Blackberry) will it be enough to close the gap between Apple or Android? Maybe a little? Take my hand. Let’s find out. (MORE: T-Mobile’s 4G BlackBerry Bold Costs a Cool $300) The Outside On the surface it’s beautifully designed with a surprising amount of professional-grade heft. Unlike the flimsy Curve (or even previous versions of the Bold before it) it doesn’t feel like a toy, thanks in no small part to the rubbery, carbon-fiber backing joined by a metal rim that eases roundedly into the bezel. Smooth, curved edges make it especially comfortable to grip, while the hallmark physical keyboard that BlackBerry fanatics swear by is as good as ever. Actually, scratch that: It’s one of the best physical keyboards I’ve ever used on a smartphone (including sliders like the Droid line). The buttons are large and well-separated, with a discernible amount of pressure on push-back. That affirmative *click* you get with each button press? Very satisfying. Here’s a size comparison with the iPhone 4:
