Earlier, Rovio released a few hints of what to expect from Angry Birds Space. We knew that it would take place in... well, space, and that it would include some new birds and new physics. Today, the company revealed some enticing gameplay footage not from its headquarters in Finland, but from the International Space Station

Move over McDonald’s, Angry Birds has you beat by a factor of eight: Developer Rovio says the popular bird-flinging, pig-pummeling mobile game for iPhone and Android mobiles has been downloaded over 500 million times across all platforms since it launched not quite two years ago. Popping up my iPhone 4′s App Store, there it is, holding the number two spot with 34,681 ratings (the number one “paid” game at the moment is Zombieville USA 2). Just below it, in fourth place, Angry Birds Seasons, and you only need drop to 12th place to find Angry Birds Rio. The free version of Angry Birds is ranked 20th (under “free” games), with only 19,424 ratings, suggesting more players are downloading the paid than freebie version. (LIST: Top 10 Must-Have iPhone Games) Angry Birds costs just $0.99, but even if we guesstimate something like half of those 500 million downloads were paid, you’d be talking $250 million in revenue for a game that cost an estimated €100,000 ($137,690 USD) to make. Rovio claims Angry Birds is now “one of the most downloaded games in the history of gaming.” That sounds about right—I can’t think of another, from any genre or gaming era, that comes close. More Rovio fun facts: Angry Birds has been played for a total of 200,000 years globally, and clocks in at 300 million minutes of play time daily. More than 266 billion levels have been played, 400 billion birds launched and upwards of 44 billion stars collected (I have no idea how Rovio comes up with this data). Next up: Angry Birds for the Nokia Asha 300 and 303 S40 “feature phones,” which Rovio says “will bring Angry Birds entertainment to completely new emerging mobile markets.” Rovio’s also poised to launch the world’s first Angry Birds retail shop in Helsinki. Indeed, the company’s merchandizing arm has grown long—Rovio says it’s shipped over 10 million Angry Birds toys worldwide. Yep, honest-to-goodness plush toys, too. I mean, just look at that silly apoplectic bird in the shot up top.
With cookbooks, toys and a rumored movie spinning off from their successful Angry Birds app, some have thought of Rovio as a wannabe Disney. But if rumors are true, Disney might actually be looking at the app maker with a view to helping it on its way to world domination. (More: Moichendising! ‘Angry Birds’ Cookbook Coming Soon) Bloomberg is reporting that Rovio is in talks to receive funding that would push the value of the company to $1.2 billion, although just who the company is talking to remains a mystery; all that’s been disclosed is that it’s an entertainment company, and apparently, one so impressive that Rovio is listening, despite turning down similar offers in the past. Disney—which has a history of partnering with synergistic media companies with exploitable IP (Muppets, Pixar, Marvel)—isn’t the only potentially interested party, however; other names being thrown around include Electronic Arts, News Corp. and, oddly enough, Farmville owners Zynga. Unsurprisingly, all named parties declined to comment when asked about any possible negotiations. Personally, I’m holding out for a Disney deal, just so my dream “Angry Birds team up with the Angel to fight Spider-Ham” movie can finally become a reality.
Interesting. See that thing up there? That’s Roku. It’s a nice, inexpensive, internet-connected box that you hook up to your TV. Once it’s set up, you can use it to stream movies and TV shows from the likes of Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Amazon, plus music and photos from Pandora and Flickr, respectively. But the company has just announced a partnership with Rovio to bring the wildly popular series of Angry Birds games to Roku boxes. “Angry Birds is the most popular and fastest growing casual game yet it has been trapped on mobile devices. We believe there’s a huge market for games like these on the TV,” said Roku founder Anthony Wood. I won’t argue with you, Mr. Wood. Now it’s not exactly rocket science to get a game like Angry Birds working on a box that’s powerful enough to stream high-definition video from the internet, but it’ll be interesting to see how the control scheme gets worked out. For the mobile versions of the game, you’ve got a touchscreen—pretty straightforward—and for the desktop versions, you click and hold your mouse button, drag your bird back in the slingshot doodad, and then release. How will that be translated to work with Roku’s remote control? One possible option is that Roku could work out a feature that’d allow you to control the box with your smartphone. Those remote-over-Wi-Fi apps are commonplace with TV boxes nowadays, but not everyone has a smartphone. The other option might be to use the remote’s 4-way control pad to shimmy your bird into position and, once it’s there, hit the OK button to let it fly. Then maybe you’d hit the OK button again once the bird’s in the air to perform those special tricks. There we go. Problem solved. Additional details of the partnership will be made available in the next few weeks, but Roku has said it “will offer Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio video games; launch an Angry Birds video channel featuring Angry Birds animated shorts; and sell

For Angry Birds aficionados, there’s some good and some bad news. The good: You’ll soon have a new opportunity to fling our feathered friends at piles of smirking pigs courtesy a new edition of the game dubbed “Angry Birds Magic.” And the bad: It’s only available for Nokia’s C7 Smartphone, which employs near field communication technology. Ready for the twist? C7 owners can’t unlock all of the 20 levels on their own. According to the Nokia blog: Five of the levels are as normal. But at that point you need to find a friend with an NFC-enabled phone, as the remaining levels are inter-spliced with ones that can only be unlocked when you touch phones with someone else. Finding one friend will unlock five more levels. A second friend will unlock another five, and a third the remaining five. But since there’s only a handful of phones that incorporate the technology – which allows contactless data collection between devices – how will you find someone else with a C7 to help you exact revenge on the pigs? Nokia has a solution, of course: a second way to unlock levels is tapping the phone against NFC tags, which could be placed in various locations. But hold on tight before you start searching. The company said, “We understand clues as to their locations will be forthcoming.” Is that a marketing ploy? Probably. The Magic edition will come preinstalled on the Nokia C7 as part of the Symbian Anna update and will also be included on all Nokia NFC-enabled devices in 2011. Even hardcore Angry Birds wonks may find switching phones to get their fingers on the new version distasteful, but props to developer Rovio for adding another dimension to the game.
Angry Birds Rio has been downloaded 10 million times in less than two weeks. If you can’t do the relatively simple math, that’s ohhhh, about one million downloads for every day since it’s been out. Rovio, the developer, didn’t say how many people downloaded the free or paid version of the game. The day that the Amazon app store debuted, Angry Birds Rio was offered as a free download. The original game showed up two years ago, and since then has been downloaded more than 100 million times. Angry Birds Rio achieved about a tenth of that in a much, much shorter time period. Not a bad showing, if you ask me. The game, if you’re unfamiliar, involves… well, let’s just say it involves birds (angry ones) and pigs. The pigs are also not your friends. Only because, um, the Rooster Teeth video spoof is actually directed by Michael Bay. Besides, given how I’m bombarded by Angry Birds advertisements even just sitting on the bus, it’s only a matter of time before Rovio cashes in. Then, I’ll just have to resort throwing birds at movie theaters to get them off my screen.
A little angry when you booted up your Angry Birds? Well, if you have the HD version, you’ll be able to see why if you updated the iPad app last night. In addition to 15 new levels, and a new golden egg, advertisements have snuck their way in. And they’re not the nice kind. Sometimes its fine if they’re tucked away in a place that can be ignored – but these ads pop up as soon as the game is paused. A “news” section pops up, and players have to wait for the animation to finish before they go back to the game. (So take this as a word of warning to you Angry Birds HD users out there, if you haven’t updated the game yet.) Blog 9to5Mac stated that a riled user complained bitterly, “I buy apps to get rid of ads not to get bombarded with more.” The game, which has been downloaded more than 100 million times, originally debuted in December 2009. Wired UK has pointed out that 20 million of the Android downloads have advertisements, but there seems to be little complaint there. Maybe users can funnel their anger, thinking they’re launching angry birds at Rovio, the developer of the game. If anything, it might lead to a better score?
They’re birds, and they’re angry, and now they’re flush with $42 million investment cash, thanks to a couple of bullish venture capital firms. Which means? A whole lot more Angry Birds, obviously. Call it the next step in a series of improbable victories for the out-of-nowhere game about a bunch of surly (but cartoon-cute) avians angling to demolish the destructible domiciles of smirking pigs. Players use their fingers to tease the birds back in slingshots, releasing them to arc across the screen like feathered bombs in hopes of pulverizing complex constructs of wood, glass, and stone, inside which their eggs–and throngs of tittering pigs–hunker. Rovio, the game’s Finnish developer, told Reuters the $42 million capital investment is all part of their tiny 40-employee company’s grand scheme to convert Angry Birds into an entertainment brand with fingers (or feathers) in every market. Think Facebook, then think even bigger, from a host of alternative platforms to Disney-like tie-in merchandizing to full-blown movies. “This investment will give Rovio wings,” said Niklas Zennström, a Skype and Kazaa co-founder Rovio just named to its board. “Angry Birds is one of the fastest-growing online products I’ve seen, growing even faster than Skype, and the company has done a brilliant job of extending it across different platforms and merchandise.” Angry Birds continues to dominate mobile sales charts, played by an estimated 40 million active monthly users (though on Apple’s iPhone App Store, it’s recently been dethroned by a new game called Tiny Wings). At last week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Rovio bragged the physics-based puzzler would soon pass the 100 million downloads mark across both paid ($0.99) and ad-supported versions. Up next? Fifteen new Angry Birds St. Patrick’s Day levels (think shamrocks and brimmed leprechaun hats), including two new golden eggs and an option to dispatch holiday-themed greetings to friends. In fact it’s available now for just $0.99. More on TIME.com Angry Birds Coming to Facebook, Pigs to Get Revenge?
Even though Angry Birds boasts more than 75 million downloads on nearly every mobile platform imaginable (and, with the PlayStation Network version on PS3, at least one home console), you’d figure that Rovio’s battling animals mega-hit would have reached everyone who wanted it. At GDC this weekend, Rovio’s “Mighty Eagle” Peter Vesterbecka said that developers need to make games that can be sold for no higher than 99 cents to find success in today’s gaming marketplace. It’s a bold statement but no one can argue with the success of Angry Birds. But, the Birds still have more territory to conquer, and they’re planning to hit the most populous virtual landscape later this year. An article in Wired Magazine’s UK edition indicates that Angry Birds will hit Facebook, looking to add to its legion of fans. On Facebook, “there will be completely new aspects to it that just haven’t been experienced in any other platform,” said studio boss Mikael Hed, who confirms that due to the social site’s ‘collaborative nature’, “the pigs will have a more prominent role”. The article also confirms that Wii and Xbox 360 versions are still under way. However, the move to Facebook may be the final frontier for Angry Birds. You won’t need to whip out a smartphone or tablet to get your catapulting on; all you’ll need is a new tab browser on a browser window. So, what do you think Angry Birds enthusiasts? Do you prefer playing the game with fingers and touchscreen or will mouse controls of a Facebook version lure you away?

Funny story: When Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7 back in the fall, the splash page on its website featured a bunch of icons for apps that’d be available in the Windows Phone Marketplace. One of those icons was the Angry Birds logo. Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds, swiftly responded via Twitter: “We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version. Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission.” There’s been plenty of talk about the game heading to Windows Phone 7 over the past few months but the latest update comes from Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka, who told Pocket-lint.com quite simply, “We’re working on it.” As for the unlawful use of the Angry Birds logo on the Windows Phone 7 splash page, Vesterbacka “swears that’s now water under the bridge and that there’s no bad blood between the two companies,” says Pocket-lint. Vesterbacka also told the site that we can expect to see 3D versions of Angry Birds in the future, though he wouldn’t discuss which platforms the game would be on. We’ll see a handful of 3D-capable phones this year and the Nintendo 3DS stands out as a likely option as well. There aren’t any confirmed dates for the 3D versions or the Windows Phone 7 version of Angry Birds yet.
Rovio and 20th Century Fox are taking fans of the Angry Bird franchise to Rio for the next installment. According to PC Mag, Angry Birds Rio will be a little different from the original game and related to RIO, 20th Century Fox’s new bird-themed animated movie. After the angry birds are kidnapped by an evil white parrot and taken to Rio De Janeiro, they find hundreds of other birds suffering in cages including the stars of RIO. We can expect the new developments in gameplay to be related to the movie. The game will have 45 levels, but Rovio said there will be app upgrades. No word on how much it will cost (or how the pesky pigs and eggs are going to be central to this game), but it is expected to be released on all mobile platforms. Angry Birds Rio will be out some time in March. Angry Birds Rio joins a list of franchise products currently being developed. There’s the Valentine’s Day edition which will be out this month, toys being produced and, if those were not enough, an animated television series in the works. So for those of you complaining that there’s no replay value in Angry Birds, relax: There’s going to be plenty more new games and media for you to try to beat and consume.
The inevitable is upon us: Angry Birds is going to be released on the Playstation Network this week marking the game’s first foray into the console world, according to the Playstation blog. With Rovio admitting to the BBC that they are developing a specific version of the title for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii to be released sometime this year, it’s only a matter of time before the birds take over our smartphones and our homes. Pigs everywhere, beware. I’m kind of disappointed that we won’t be able to use the touch screen capabilities when playing the games on PSP or PS3. That’s part of what made Angry Birds so fun. However with a different way to play the game and 63 levels to get three stars in again, it’s something new to do.
Happy one year anniversary, Angry Birds! To kick things off – the actual date is tomorrow – developer Rovio is currently going through an all-day Angry Birds press conference/extravaganza featuring Finnish tribute bands, lots and lots of stats and some very interesting news for you Android and PC gamers. - The Mighty Eagle is Coming Out Really Soon For Everyone Although, I still think this is a really cheap (as in lame not inexpensive – each use will set you back 99 cents) way to beat the game. The good news: You can now automatically get three-stars in every level and beat those levels you can’t seem to finish. You can only use it once an hour to limit the madness. - Bad Piggy Bank Coming Out for Android Users The Bad Piggy Bank will give Android users an in game option to make purchases such as the Mighty Eagle or upgrades to get rid of those annoying ads. The Finnish operator Eliza will be in charge of the payments, and the billing will go straight to your mobile phone bill. “Angry Birds has become the benchmark in casual mobile gaming, and a huge part of the whole game experience is convenience,” the CEO of Rovio Mikael Hed said in a press release. “With the help of Elisa and Bad Piggy Bank, we can introduce the same high level of convenience to purchasing our products and services.” - The PC Game is coming soon There’s no official launch date yet, but the Angry Birds PC version that we’ve all been waiting for – okay that I’ve been waiting for – is supposedly going to launch today according to The Next Web. What I really want to know though is why those pigs are stealing the eggs and what they are doing with them? And, also, where they got those Angry Birds hoodies they’re all rocking for the streaming video. Can I use the Bad Piggy Bank to get one of those?
