If you absolutely must send a text message while driving, you may be no better off using Siri or other voice software than you would typing the message by hand. That’s the conclusion from Texas A&M’s Transportation Institute, which measured voice-to-text programs’ effect on distracted driving. Although drivers in Texas A&M’s study felt safer when using a program like Siri, they still reacted as slowly as they did when texting manually, and were just as likely to take their eyes off the road ahead. The study’s findings were based on a closed-course driving test with 43 participants, both male and female, of all ages. Most of the participants said they already text while driving, which isn’t a surprise considering that almost half of commuters admitted to the habit in a recent AT&T survey. Each participant drove the course four times: once without texting, once while typing text messages, once with Siri on an iPhone and once with Vlingo on a Samsung Android phone. The texting test included sending new messages as well as reading and replying to incoming messages. Drivers were roughly twice as slow to respond to events while texting, regardless of whether they were texting by voice or by typing, the study found. Compared to when they weren’t texting, the drivers also spent close to ten seconds less time with their eyes forward. The drivers did manage to stay in their lanes in all cases, at least. “You’re still using your mind to try to think of what you’re trying to say, and that by proxy causes some driving impairment, and that decreases your response time,” Christine Yager, who headed the study, told Reuters. Here’s the kicker: not only were voice-to-text applications just as distracting, they were also slower, due to the time it takes to activate voice commands and, in the case of Siri, have the message read back. However, Siri did prove more accurate than trying to type out a message from behind the wheel. In the study, Yager cautions that these results are just part

Google’s search app for iPhone just got a big upgrade, with improved voice search that supports natural-language questions, just like Apple’s Siri. I tried it on my iPhone 5, and it’s pretty slick. When I asked, “What movies are playing tonight?” the app almost immediately spit back a search-results page with local movie listings on top. Siri stuttered on the same question, first digesting the words, then showing some text that said it was looking into it, then finally showing a neatly formatted list of films. Google’s app can answer a healthy range of questions too. It can tell you the weather, flight status, sports scores and stocks. It knows trivia, translates languages, does math and performs unit conversions. It can suggest places to eat and give the dates of upcoming events. In terms of answering questions, it’s a pretty close rival to Siri, and it’s often faster to respond. Yet I don’t see myself using it on the iPhone 5. That’s partly due to the nature of Apple’s iOS software. On the iPhone, you can’t add widgets or otherwise tell third-party apps to do things directly from the home screen. That means you can’t run a Google voice search without opening the app and then tapping the search button. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s an extra step or two compared with using Siri, which can launch from anywhere. The bigger issue is that Google’s app doesn’t do everything that Siri does. While the app can look up information using Google’s Knowledge Graph, it can’t set reminders, make restaurant reservations, create calendar appointments or pen messages in Gmail. It can’t remind me of upcoming appointments or events or warn me about traffic. And for directions — the one thing I use voice search for the most — Google’s app doesn’t lead to Apple Maps but to its own Web app, which doesn’t do turn-by-turn voice guidance. (And for all the griping about Apple Maps, it works fine in my neck of the woods.) So yes, essentially I’d love

Look at that iPhone 4S, all sleek and new and, well, pretty much identical to the iPhone 4 on the outside. It’s what’s inside that counts, from the 4S’s superior camera and faster all-in-one processor to a voice assistant named Siri you can’t find anywhere else—anywhere else that’s not an Apple phone, anyway. It sounds like a Siri port to Apple’s older iPhone 4 is in the offing. Apple is, according to jailbreak news-watcher JBN, testing Siri on devices “other than the iPhone 4S.” The claim’s origin? “A source close to Apple,” writes JBN. Grab your salt shakers, everyone, because here we go… (MORE: What the Heck Happened to Siri?) JBN’s hearing the iPhone 4, specifically, but since the source claims “phones,” plural, JBN reasons we’ll see Siri running on older devices, too. While I’m assuming for performance reasons that wouldn’t include anything with the number ’3′ in its moniker, there’s always the iPad and iPad 2. The test, claims JBN’s source, involves a special version of Siri developed by Apple to work on “older devices” and handed out to select employees. Happy as I’d be to see an iPhone 4 port of Siri, speaking as an iPhone 4 owner looking at a late 2012 upgrade timeframe, I’m not sure this rumor passes the smell test. The iPhone 4S is a nominal update to the iPhone 4. The camera’s better, true, but not spectacularly so, and the faster A5 processor’s arguably overkill for a device with a tiny 3.5-inch display (to say nothing of its impact on the phone’s battery life). Siri remains one of the 4S’s key distinctions. Why, assuming the company was toying with giving Siri away to iPhone 4 users as a freebie upgrade, would Apple eliminate that distinction? Siri’s arrival on the iPad family is all but guaranteed, on the other hand, and it’s possible that’s what the scuttlebutt’s really about, say an iPad 2 version, perhaps to accompany the rumored iPad 2 update—not a full-on iPad 3—rumored to be in production now and shipping early next

Open mouth, insert foot: Siri apparently did something like that yesterday, responding to iPhone 4S owners’ questions with decidedly un-savvy answers. Answers like: “Sorry, I’m having trouble connecting to the network” and “Sorry I’m not able to connect right now” and “Sorry, I don’t have a network connection.” But users actually did have a network connection—it turns out Siri didn’t, because Siri needs one, right back to Apple HQ, in order to figure out what you’re talking about and deliver a helpful (or occasionally witty) reply, whether what you’re asking about pertains to local content or no. Because her brain’s part-online. Because…you know, the cloud. (MORE: Catfight! Siri, Meet Iris, Your 8-Hour-Old Android Rival) No one’s sure exactly what happened, and Apple hasn’t offered an official explanation. Some users called into Apple for assistance and mentioned on Apple’s official support forums that customer support representatives were stating Apple was having “server issues,” that the service had been “overloaded” and that Apple was working on a remedy. The recommended solution at the time: “Try later,” and if that doesn’t work, “call back tomorrow.” Word this morning is that Siri’s back, but without Apple’s official word on the apparent outage, it’s hard to say what’s going on. In a much longer complaint thread, users have been unloading on Apple for what they view as a gap between Siri’s promise and execution. “I swore up and down that I would never get an IPhone, but when they came out with Siri I just had to get one,” writes one user. “Now it never works and I’m kicking myself for switching over. I spent a lot of money on this phone just for Siri and it has been very disappointing so far.” “Normally I’ve had very few problems using Siri. She’s usually there and eager to assist me,” writes another. “Today, however, I think she’s joined the ‘OCCUPY’ movement and has joined the General Strike…cuz I’m getting no cooperation or work out of here any of the number of times I’ve tried throughout the day.” “Anyone
