The long-awaited HP Slate is finally here. And it’s not that it’s being announced now and will be out in a few months—it’s here, here.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs was on his company’s fourth quarter earnings call last night. It was a rare appearance but Jobs said, “I just couldn’t help dropping by for our first $20 billion quarter.” He also couldn’t help taking a few shots at the competition—specifically RIM, (makers of the BlackBerry handsets) and Google’s Android platform.
As flavors of Linux go, Ubuntu has been pretty popular over the years. The open source operating system can be installed on a wide range of computer hardware, and there’s even a version called Ubuntu Netbook that’s specially made to optimize the relatively tight 1024×600 screen resolution found on many of today’s netbooks.
Reuters reports that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told a crowd at the London School of Economics yesterday, "You’ll see new slates with Windows on them. You’ll see them this Christmas."
Dell will be launching a 7-inch Android tablet "very, very soon—within the next few weeks," according to Dell Greater China President Amit Midha. The company will follow the 7-inch version up with a 10-inch version, but we won’t see that one for at least six months according to the Wall Street Journal.
It’s official. ViewSonic’s 10-inch tablet will be called the ViewPad 100, and a preproduction model has been shown off at the IFA show in Germany running both Android and Windows 7.

On a company earnings call yesterday, Hewlett Packard’s Todd Bradley made it official that we can expect both Microsoft tablets and webOS (Palm’s mobile operating system) tablets to hit the market.
Samsung hasn’t necessarily been coy about its plans to develop a tablet, and it appears that the company is preparing to officially unveil it in early September at the Berlin-based IFA consumer electronics show.
At Microsoft’s Financial Analysts Meeting yesterday, CEO Steve Ballmer took the stage to talk about the company’s consumer initiatives. The entire video of the presentation is available here. He spent a portion of the time talking about slates and tablets, saying the following:
