The one thing nobody wants to do after a long day of work is schlep to the supermarket and fight the crowds grabbing groceries for dinner. Commuters in Seoul, however, now have a different option—shopping by smartphone in the virtual grocery store in the Seolleung underground station. It works like this: Photos of hundreds of virtual groceries line the walls. Shoppers simply step up, take a photo of the QR code listed under each product and go about their day. If they order by 1pm, their groceries should be delivered to them by dinnertime. (MORE: Health Checkup: Who Needs Organic Food?) The company behind the virtual supermarket, Tesco-affiliate Homeplus, is thinking of rolling this technology out to other subway stations and eventually to other countries. Kwon Ki-Duk of the Samsung Economic Research Institute tells BBC News that this might only work in South Korea, one of the world’s most wired countries with 10 million smartphone subscribers and an Internet use rate of around 80%. Could this work here in the United States? We certainly has enough smartphone subscribers at 45 million. A poll back in April found that half of all shoppers with a smartphone consulted it while shopping, although that probably doesn’t pertain to picking up bananas and cereal at the grocery store. FreshDirect, which allows New Yorkers to order groceries online and have them delivered to their homes, already has a mobile app, which, really, isn’t that different from the experience offered by Homeplus. I’d make a bet on mobile apps, not QR codes (which seem to be getting less popular), as being the future of grocery shopping.
Video-on-demand apps allow users to stream movie and TV content to their smartphones or other mobile devices wherever they may be… So why do most people end up using them when they could just as easily watch television? All Things D points out a new study showing that most VoD app users watch streamed video at home (74% of smartphone users, 76% of iPod Touch users, and 78% of tablet users), which makes sense on one hand—it’s where users are most likely to have both the Wi-Fi and the time to watch video, after all—but seems confusing on the other, because, well, why not watch the larger screen called television in that case? (MORE: Analysts: Pay $30 for Premium VoD Movie Rentals? No Way!) Interestingly enough, the study—carried out by the Cable and Telecommunications Association for Marketing—suggests that app-watching doesn’t actually reduce television viewing any: It just adds more screen time to a user’s life. Besides home, the most popular locations for mobile video viewing are in a car (hopefully as passengers), and the euphemistic “other indoor locations.” Oddly enough, “on a plane” ranks at the bottom on the list of locations, which has to be because of the lack of fast-and-free Wi-Fi, I’m assuming. Given my recent plane history, I thought that everyone watched movies on their devices on flights these days.
Americans were using their smartphones a lot more last year, with usage up an amazing 60%. But it’s only really good news for Apple and Google, as ComScore figures suggest that iOS and Android were the only mobile platforms to see any increase, with RIM, Microsoft and Palm all dropping in the last months of the year. Google’s Android is by far the winner of the data released on activity between September and December 2010; it gained 7.3% in terms of subscriber base, against a 0.7% gain for Apple’s iOS and losses from everyone else. Overall service usage saw a rise in every activity, with the most popular continuing to be text messaging, although the largest gain came from usage of social networking sites or games, up 1.5%, followed by browser use and app downloads, both of which showed a 1.3% gain. Overall, according to ComScore, 63.2 million people used smartphones in the US for the three month period ending last year.
Not to be left behind in the scuffle, but T-Mobile is entering the Verizon vs. AT&T fight with a great offer of their own: free phones. While the coveted iPhone won’t be included in the promotion, all phones – including 4G-capable phones – will be gratis on February 11 and 12. The last time the company attempted this on Father’s Day 2010, they added 110,000 new customers according to Tmo News, breaking all kinds of sales records. “Smartphones offer people incredible flexibility to stay connected and express their love to the people that matter most,” T-Mobile USA senior vice president of marketing John Clelland said. “T-Mobile’s Valentine’s promotion makes it easier for anyone to get their favorite smartphone and keep connected on America’s largest 4G network.” It might be a Valentine’s Day promotion, but putting it the same day as the Verizon iPhone release is a bit sneaky – and could be a lucrative offer.
We talked a little bit about the rumors of Best Buy’s Buy Back program. Well, it’s official: Best Buy is launching a resale program creatively called Buy Back for your old electronic products. Starting with three categories (smartphones, computing solutions which includes computers and tablets, and televisions), Best Buy hopes to appeal to tech happy individuals who constantly want to upgrade to the latest item. If all goes well, they may expand to different products depending on demand. (I’m crossing my fingers for a camera program.) “It is for the the early adopter,” Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn said in an interview with Techland. “It’s for the the technology enthusiast… The person for whom the latest and greatest technology seems to be really, really important.” The three programs are a little investment, but they won’t set you back that much, especially if you’re the kind of person who likes to upgrade constantly and get your money’s worth. The plans are as follows: - All Laptops, Netbooks, Tablets: $69.99 - Post-Paid Mobile Phones With a Retail price Under $350: $39.99; With a Retail Price Over $350: $59.99 - Televisions With a Retail Price Under $500, $59.99; From $500 – $1199.99, $99.99; From $1200 – $2499.99, $179.99; From $2500 – $5000, $349.99 If you trade in your product six months within the purchase date, you get up to 50 percent back of the paid price. Six to 12 months after, you get up to 40 percent. Twelve to 18 months after, 30 percent. Finally, if you Redeem your Buy Back after 18 months to 24 months you get 20 percent. (There’s no plans after two years, but with any smartphone service provider you’re probably up for an upgrade by now anyway.) Just for TVs, the plan gets extended to 48 months, and you can get up to 10 percent back, which is better than nothing. Of course, the device has to be in working condition, but Dunn assures that normal wear and tear for the age of the product will still result in money back. That means no cracked screens, but

There’s no denying that the folks behind Android technology are extremely busy. Today, they previewed the newest operation platform the Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Now with 3D technology best seen when using Google Maps 5 and an easier to use interface, the new design looks sleek and sophisticated – at least according to the video they released. It’s designed specifically larger interfaces, so to get the full experience you need to get a tablet. “Many of Android’s existing features will really shine on Honeycomb: refined multi-tasking, elegant notifications, access to over 100,000 apps on Android Market, home screen customization with a new 3D experience and redesigned widgets that are richer and more interactive,” VP of Engineering Andy Rubin said on the Google blog. “We’ve also made some powerful upgrades to the web browser, including tabbed browsing, form auto-fill, syncing with your Google Chrome bookmarks, and incognito mode for private browsing.” It’s great that they’re actually listening to user concerns about privacy issues and taking advantage of their Google relationship. While it’s all exciting, there wasn’t really any specs or if they’re upgrading things like the Android Market so we’ll have to wait for details on that and the release date. Until then, enjoy the video.
Boy Genius Report is saying that they have exclusive news that Best Buy will be starting a smartphone buy back program in 2011. According to their sources, the company hopes to attract customers who always want to upgrade their phones, and they’re hoping that Best Buys “Buy Back” is a lucrative deal will help people chose the companies when it comes to getting the latest equipment. The plan, which costs $59.99, seems to be for people who like to always have the latest in smartphone technology. The screenshot below from BGR has more details. It seems that “Buy Back” program members will get 50 percent of the full retail value back between one and six months of owning the phone. Between months 6 and 12 the device can be turned in for 30 percent of the original price and so on and so forth. It’s important to note that although the report seems legitimate and BGR has been correct in reporting rumors in the past, Best Buy hasn’t confirmed anything. Is an extra $59.99 worth it to be able to get more value out of your smartphone or should you just save the money and wait two years before getting a new one?
Love social media? Great. But what about social reality? You might feel the need to tweet about having dinner “W/ my bestest” but consider the potential animosity that may be silently shooting your way from across the table. Face it: Our attachment to our mobile devices has hit an extreme, so much so that a Pew survey revealed that 75% of us consider it okay to use a smartphone from inside a public bathroom. A bathroom? Really? Is our need for digital down time that low? (More on Techland: New Year’s Resolution: Clean Up Your Search Results) When it comes to technology etiquette (techiquette, if you will), it seems as though we’re in two camps: 1) The habitual users, and 2) The frequently annoyed by camp number one. Etiquette expert Anna Post explained to Discovery News in September that what may be rude to some is absolutely fine behavior to others. “It’s just so funny sometimes the difference in mentality between generations,” she said. “I might be a little annoyed if my boyfriend took a call at the table, whereas for a younger generation, this is a normal action. Its considerate to answer the phone because it might be important, and to me that’s just a fascinating distinction.” So courtesy is generational? I’m sorry, but I don’t buy that. I’ll never forget my first iPhone toting friend and her abrupt decent from our semi-serious conversation at dinner one night as she thumbed through her latest apps. I felt boring and put out, and since then, fiddling with a phone while I’m speaking has become my top gripe with humanity. (Really. I even hate this more than people who cut in line.) “When the technology almost changes before the society can adapt, it can be confusing for people,” Post said. “We don’t want to be offensive to others, but we have to be using the technology to even start to figure out what can be offensive.” No offense to Ms. Post, but I think the jury is REAL IN.
A unnamed Samsung official said that they hope to move 330 million handsets next year, an 18 percent increase from 2010, according to Reuters. It’s a bold number to state, especially because Samsung only sold 195 million units by the end of the third quarter of 2010. They’re expected to close out the year with a solid 280 million, and are currently the world’s second largest mobile phone producer. It’s also Asia’s most valuable stock, with $125 billion in market capitalization. Analysts have only projected a moderate 7 percent increase for the company, Android Guys points out, even though the company have been quite successful with their recent releases Galaxy S phones and Galaxy Tabs especially since there will still be stiff competition from other smartphones like the iPhone and the Android. (More on Time.com: Two Minute Video: Samsung Netbook Tops 10-inchers) The Samsung official told Electronista lower end smartphones would be a focus in 2011, accounting for about 30 million phones. The Samsung Galaxy Tab, especially the 10-inch model, would account for about 20 million units of sales.
Radio Shack is slashing $50 off the price of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS now through December 11. The iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (16GB) and iPhone 4 (32GB) will drop to $49.99, $149.99 and $249.99 respectively. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade, the time is now especially since Radio Shack is also offering to pay $75 credit for a 3G phone and $125 credit for 3GS. You can only use up to $50 of your credit toward a new phone, but the rest can be spent on accessories. You do have to sign a 2-year-contract though, so if you’re willing to commit, this is possibly the best deal you’ll ever get. To be eligible, your old phone must turn on, cannot be PIN locked and has to be in fully working condition without anything broken. (So if your display cracked when you dropped it, sorry you’re out of luck.) In addition, the cell phone housing or casing cannot be cracked or broken, and neither the display nor the housing can exhibit any signs of liquid damage. (More on Time.com: Apple’s Hits and Misses So Far) If you don’t have an iPhone, you can get at least a $10 credit for trading in another brand of phone if it is in working condition as well. It also seems that you can use your credit toward any other phone if you’re just not an iPhone. See Radio Shack’s Trade In and Save program for details.
Chances are if you have a kid between the ages of 6-12, he or she wants an iPad this December. A survey conducted by Nielsen found out that the Apple device was the most requested tech “toy” of the holiday season. (More on TIME.com: Study: Teenage Girls Play Dumb, Act Mean Online) Nielsen asked children what device they wanted in the next six months. Younger kids also wanted a computer, smartphone (though one can only wonder if it’s to be just like their older siblings and parents) and iPod touch in that order. The Nintendo DS is high on the list, but the Play Station Portable is near the bottom. (More on TIME.com: First-Grade Girl Bullied for Loving “Star Wars,” Internet Responds) Interestingly enough, children over 13 decided to go on a more practical route and want a computer above all things closely followed by a tie for a television and a smartphone. Though the iPad comes at number four on the list, it’s still a popular request. Last place for the teen crowd are the portable video game consoles, Nintendo DS and its variations and the Play Station Portable. They barely edge out the Kinect for Xbox 360 and Play Station Move as least requested. And in last place for the younger generation? It’s e-readers. Kids these days just have no interest in reading.
Sharp, the one time maker of the now defunct KIN and Sidekick brands, has declared it will bring to market a smartphone with a 3D panel that doesn’t require glasses by year’s end. It will likely have a 3D camera in tow, too. But will it be any better than the display on the Nintendo 3DS? And will it be any better than the faux 3D smartphone from Samsung that my uncle was carrying around more than two years ago? It’s unclear if Sharp actually told Reuters that it plans to combat the iPhone with said 3D smartphone but I can’t imagine they didn’t say it, either. *foreheadslap*

T-Mobile launched a teaser site for a mysterious HSPA+ smartphone and rumors suggest this will be the long awaited HTC G1 upgrade most every Android fan has been waiting for. Or maybe not. A quick look at the source code and its server suggests it could be a new Sidekick. Beyond that the site simply says, “The Revolution Continues” followed by “Later this year, the first HSPA+ smartphone from T-Mobile will shape the next generation. Yours.” All of that implies that it could be a Sidekick-like device. T-Mobile halted all sales of existing Sidekick devices earlier this month to “further innovate and raise the bar for the next iteration” of the popular franchise and this just might be it. I just wonder what that protrusion on the lower left corner is. Any ideas?
Wow. This just in from CES: AT&T just announced its very first Android phone, as well as its plan for five new phones, a massive upgrade of its 3G network, and a plan to offer mobile apps to non-smartphone users. AT&T is the last of the major wireless companies to offer a phone operating with the Android OS. The first will likely be from Dell, who is only reporting that the smartphone will be “from the Mini 3 Android-based lineup” as well as an AT&T exclusive. Also among the new devices is the HTC smartphone also based on the Android platform and the new Motorola device, powered by MOTOBLUR. Head of Consumer Services Ralph de la Vega also said that the company will sell phones using Palm’s WebOS during the first half of this year. Among its other goals, AT&T announced it will offer app stores for all major operating systems, begin app development for the new devices immediately and create an easy-to-distribute plan for app developers along with a new AT&T Virtual Innovation Lab. And finally, comes a face lift for the 3G Network, which AT&T says will provide better connectivity, speed and increase its network efficiency. The company says they’ll do this by enhancing its cell site backhaul connections over the next two years and by “adding capacity from cell sites to the AT&T backbone network.”
