Break the law and Apple may follow up by breaking into your iPhone, reports CNET, though if you represent the long arm of the law asking Cupertino to give you a hand (or would the proper term be demanding?), it sounds like you’ll have to wait in line: up to seven weeks, in seems. Why? Because requests from law enforcement officials to hack into someone’s iPhone have been so overwhelming that Apple’s had to create a waiting list to manage them all. Using a highly secure password on your phone (think long and completely random) should keep just about everyone at bay — but not someone with backdoor access. You knew there were rumors of a backdoor on the iPhone, right? Still, even if those rumors haven’t been wildly exaggerated, it sounds like there’s a significant waiting period to enlist Apple’s help. Cnet unearthed court documents revealing that an agent at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (the ATF) tried for three months last summer to find someone “with the forensic capabilities to unlock” an iPhone 4S. Failing that, the agent turned to Apple for help in a case involving a Kentucky man accused of distributing crack cocaine. But according to case opinion filed by U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell, the ATF was “placed on a waiting list” by Cupertino — a waiting list with an up to seven-week delay, says the ATF agent, claiming he was told this by someone in Apple’s legal department. Cnet isn’t sure how long the process ultimately took, but notes it “appears to have been at least four months.” As Ars Technica notes, it’s not clear how much information Apple can access by hacking an iPhone (it’s much easier to get at data replicated to the cloud), but the ATF agent claimed in a sworn statement that Apple “has the capabilities to bypass the security software” on the iPhone, and could “download the contents of the phone to an external memory device” (like a USB key). Apple, as you’d expect, isn’t commenting on the matter, but it’s interesting

Admit it, you’ve squeezed your smartphone ungently at one time or another, if only to keep it from slipping out of your grip and going all Humpty Dumpty on the floor. Not exactly malleable, is it? But what if it could be? Meet “Morphees,” mobile devices capable of changing shape on demand, sort of like the prototype flexible display technology in stuff like “plastic electronic newspaper” only much more functionally versatile. Morphees are the work of researchers at the University of Bristol, U.K. and the German Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Saarbrücken, Germany. Their goal: to introduce what they call “shape resolution” as a metric that we’d use alongside screen and touch resolution, only in this case, to capture the shifting physical geometric capabilities of a bona fide shape-changing device. Imagine devices made of electro-active polymers (that is, materials activated or manipulated by electricity) as well as alloys with “shape memory.” The research team proposes building these as “self-actuated flexible mobile devices adapting their shapes on their own to the context of use in order to offer better affordances.” (The latter’s just a somewhat fancy way of describing devices that can turn into whatever you need for the task at hand.) Take gaming. If you’re playing something like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, for instance, you’re holding the smartphone’s screen sideways and gripping either end like a gamepad. That’s hardly ideal, since smartphones lack the ergonomic depth of game controllers. With an exoskeletal Morphee shell, the ends might curl around to create gamepad-style handlebars, giving you a much better grip. To make their case, the researchers created six prototypes to illustrate how Morphees might be used. They point out that the proliferation of shape-changing prototypes is creating a need for more specific metrics defining how these devices differ from one another, just as we today routinely differentiate between display types according to physical screen size, pixel count and density, refresh rate and so forth. Where do you start with something as hypothetically polymorphous as general geometry? The team chose 10 features

Life with an almost 9-month-old is like a revolving door — everything that’s old is new: Sophie the rubber giraffe, a crinkly piece of yellow cloth-wrapped plastic, a strange plush-toy thingamajig with half a dozen waggling appendages. But these pale in comparison with the family smartphones, tablets and laptops, which gleaming screens our little boy would probably sit for hours watching if we allowed it, mesmerized by computer-generated images of owls trampolining off cloud tops or beaming stars which closeups conjure smiles and sometimes shrieks of delight. Every time I whip out my smartphone in his vicinity, I feel like Frodo donning the One Ring. It’s as if my child can sense its presence (that, or he’s associated “crack-cocaine-supertoy-appear!” with the zombie faces we probably make as we’re tapping away). If we face the screen toward him, whoa, Nellie: up come both hands, mouth popping wide, arms reaching out like Superman about to take flight. I always thought little kids were drawn to backlit screens because of repetition and acclimation, as in the case of parents who drop them in front of cartoons and use the screens as babysitters, the addiction inculcated — but it has to be more than that. Our little boy was hypnotized the first time he noticed the TV screen, just a few months old, craning his neck in ways we’d not yet seen, desperately trying to keep the screen (an episode of Breaking Bad, if memory serves) in view from his vantage on the floor as we worked to face him away from it. The American Academy of Pediatrics has repeatedly warned that screen time for children under the age of 2 is a no-no. Why? Research suggests it delays language development and can disrupt sleep. Generally speaking, we know that interacting directly and routinely with your child is paramount when it comes to hitting established developmental milestones. In fact, a recent story in the New York Times referenced research by academics Betty Hart and Todd Risley (published in the 1995 book Meaningful Differences in the Everyday

Roger Martin, the dean of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, is also a board member of BlackBerry maker RIM. And in an interview with the Globe and Mail’s Gordon Pitts, he’s anything but sheepish about the challenges that RIM currently faces. Let’s see. Martin says that people who argued for ousting longtime co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie believed RIM should turn itself over “to children, or morons from the outside who will destroy the company.” He mocks outsiders who argue that RIM should split up its hardware and software business as “geniuses.” Okay, he thinks that pundits are dopes. We get that. If I worked at RIM, I’d probably be prickly myself. But Martin also seems to say that the customers who have opted for iPhones over BlackBerries over the past half-decade are clueless: People were saying we can’t make powerful phones like Apple. Yes, we can, but we couldn’t believe consumers would put up with that kind of battery inefficiency and that kind of network inefficiency. Bad consumers! Bad, bad consumers! Martin’s stance appears to confirm the conventional wisdom that RIM simply didn’t understand the iPhone after Steve Jobs announced it in January 2007. Rather than ensuring a bright future, the company’s enormous success and obvious competence in the smartphone world left it unable to identify a sea change when it saw one. That’s a powerful case study for an institution such as the Rotman School of Management right there. Martin does acknowledge some mistakes on RIM’s part, but like other company execs, he seems to think that weak marketing, rather than weak products, has hobbled the company in recent years–as if better ads would have made the BlackBerry PlayBook a winner. Which is yet another instance of RIM being unable to face the possibility that it’s lost its ability to build devices that the savviest businessfolk and consumers will crave. Along with Lazaridis, Balsillie, and new CEO Thorsten Heins, Martin is a RIM insider whose public pronouncements don’t provide much evidence that he understands

I don't buy the notion that the Consumer Electronics Show is dead or dying, if only because the Samsungs, Sonys and LGs of the world need a place where they can peacock on a grand stage — and Las Vegas is ideal. But over my last three years of covering the show, I've realized these gadget makers can't do much to make CES exciting. That responsibility falls to Apple, Google and Microsoft, regardless of whether or not they pay for a booth or deliver a keynote.

It's a familiar refrain among parents of young children: Kids don't want to play with toys anymore because they'd rather play games on an iPad or a smartphone. Now, some toy makers are trying to adapt by fusing phone and tablet apps with store-bought toys. One of these companies, WowWee Toys, recently showed me some of their prototypes as part of a toy line they're calling "App Gear."

The Techland crew presses on with our favorite gadgets and holiday gift ideas of 2011. On Tuesday, Graeme likened this feature series to a procession of reindeer, but as the group's token Jewish guy, I'm considering it a set of candles in the Hanukkah menorah, of which my list is the third. The presence of eight favorite gadgets on this list is totally coincidental. I digress.
