Ever wanted to get the benefits of communal television viewing without having to actually spend time around other people? Well in that case, the iPhone and Android app “SocialGuide” is the app you’ve been dreaming of. SocialGuide is based around what CEO Sean Casey calls the “two-screen experience”: “More and more, TV watching is becoming a two-screen experience, where viewers are engaging with another device while watching TV. SocialGuide and its apps make it easier for TV viewers to decide which shows to watch, while also allowing them to interact with friends, fellow fans, cast members and athletes as they watch their favorite programming.” Described as “the first real-time social guide and TV companion,” the app lists current programming ranked by the amount of conversation each show is generating on social media—you can limit that search to your personal social media contacts, in case you don’t want to be overwhelmed with American Idol spoilers—and offers the chance for users to add to the conversation via Twitter or Facebook. SocialGuide as a company has actually been around for a while, and partnered with database company Tribune Media Services back in May to enhance its listing and programming guides, presumably in preparation for the launch of the free app. Now, you can have friends telling you what you should watch on television no matter where you go—which is potentially a good thing… right?
It’s the kind of news you can use next time concerned parents bring up the idea that the internet is making people more withdrawn and closed off from the rest of humanity: A new study from the Pew Research Center has found that online social networks actually seem to make people more social. Pew polled 2,255 Americans during October and November last year, and of the 1,787 internet users in that group, 47% used social networking sites. Facebook was used by 92% of the 975 people that used social networks, with MySpace in second place, with 29%. Linkedin and Twitter trailed behind, with 18% and 13% respectively. (PHOTOS: Life Inside Facebook Headquarters) That’s almost twice as many as in 2008, when the survey was last held. But more interestingly, there’s also been a rise in the number of close friendships people are reporting when compared with 2008—2.16 close friends on average, compared with 2008′s 1.93—with that increase being lead by those online, who reported an average of 2.26 close friends to the offline respondents’ 1.75. It gets even better when you look at those using social networks, who reported 2.45 close friends on average. The study even looked into the number of social ties internet users and non-internet users have, and found that online Americans tend to have 664 ties on average, compared with an offline average of around 506. That number goes crazy when you start to plug in different social networks, however: Facebook users average 648 social ties, but Twitter users have an average of 838. So, the next time someone says that they think the internet is bad for society, the answer is clear: Sign them up for Twitter, and see how they feel a couple of weeks later.

Wouldn’t it be grand if every time you opened a beer, Facebook automatically created an event and invited all your friends over? I know that every time I sit down to enjoy a series of smooth draws from a delicious craft IPA after a long day of work, I’m thinking, “Hey, I wish everyone I knew on Facebook could be here to watch me drink this thing.” Heineken has theoretically answered my prayers (please note: these aren’t actually my prayers—I don’t want people coming over) with a connected bottle opener concept created by two students in Germany. You initially link the bottle opener up with your Facebook account, and then the magic happens: “When a beer is opened, it directly creates a Facebook event at your location, inviting friends from your city.” There’s a potential Heineken-sponsored upside to having everyone you know show up at your house, too: “Get as many people to RSVP as possible and whoever has the most friends attending gets a free Heineken case for next weekend!” You might want to check how much a case of Heineken costs in your neck of the woods to decide if it’s really worth all the trouble. Thankfully (or unfortunately), this is all still just a concept at the moment. Check out the above video to see how it’d all shake out in theory.
It doesn’t need to be reiterated but if you’re thinking of starting a business, make sure it has “social” in the name somewhere. Social is so very, very white hot right now. Even Pepsi’s getting in on the social action with its new “Social Vending System” machines. They’re just ordinary vending machines, right? Right?! Let’s ask Pepsi: “Using digital technology, PepsiCo’s Social Vending System enables any user to gift a friend by selecting a beverage and entering the recipient’s name, mobile number and a personalized text message. There’s also the option to further personalize the gift with a short video recorded right at the machine. The gift is delivered with a system code and instructions to redeem it at any PepsiCo Social Vending system. When the recipient redeems their gift, they’re given the option of either thanking the original sender with a gift of their own or paying it forward and gifting a beverage to another friend.” Aw, see now I feel bad for being so sarcastic about the whole thing. This is actually kind of cool. For the time being, there will be only one Social Vending System in existence and it’ll be found “at the National Automatic Merchandising Association’s One Show in Chicago, April 27-29,” according to Pepsi’s press release. That’s like a who’s who in the automatic merchandising game, so it ought to be quite a scene–all those movers and shakers gifting Pepsis to each other. Livin’ large, as they say. They still say that, right? More on TIME.com: Social Shopping Is Big Business, but What’s So ‘Social’ About It?
Starting today, Facebook Deals will begin kicking off in five cities, according to the New York Times. The hotly anticipated Facebook Deals taps into the social online coupon market along with heavyweights Groupon and LivingSocial in offering discounts for shared activities. The feature will initially only be offered in five cities: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco. Facebook plans to test out it in there before it rolls Deals out to other cities around the nation. Facebook users can begin receiving Deals through email or NewsFeed. Last month, users who wanted to opt in to the email service could subscribe to the service. In addition to presenting local offerings, users will also have the chance to comment on individual deals. The discounts will focus primarily on local activities and local businesses. Facebook Deals will be the first among the major companies to truly integrate social networking with the online couponing business. Deals can be shared with friends, and users will be able see what their friends have bought. In addition, you’ll be able to view what kind of deals your friends are interested in – making it ideal for group outings, concerts and events. Want to head out to that SXSW festival together next year? You’ll be able to easily organize who’s coming on Facebook. The deals can be purchased by way of Facebook Credits or through a credit card. Credits already can be used to buy some virtual goods inside the social networking site, but it’s the first time the service can be used to purchase vouchers for cold, hard goods. According to the New York Times, Facebook has high hopes that its Credits system will become a major force in the world of online payments. The company hopes that it will distinguish itself from its competitors because Deals taps straight into the social network Facebook users themselves have already built up. That’s instant access to 600 million and counting users. It is a major disadvantage for competitors like Groupon and LivingSocial, which are built around the

It’s the end of Google co-founder Larry Page’s first week back at the helm as company CEO, and it appears the game plan is still looking aggressive. In a memo apparently sent out to Google employees, everyone’s 2011 bonus will grow or shrink based on how well the company does with its social efforts. Let’s just call this the Facebook Fulcrum, for lack of a better term. Googlers’ bonuses have historically been “multiplied against some figure correlated to the overall company’s performance,” according to Business Insider but that multiplier will now shrink or grow based on Google’s ability to successfully “integrate relationships, sharing and identity across our products,” according to the memo. The memo goes on to say: “If we’re successful, your bonus could be up to 25% bigger. If not, your bonus could be as much as 25% less than target. We all have a stake in the success of this effort and this multiplier is designed to reflect that.” Google has rolled out several social products over the years—Orkut, Wave, Buzz, and now +1, to name a few—but the company’s had a hard time gaining traction against a behemoth like Facebook. And with Facebook slowly but surely branching out from more than just simple social networking into areas that Google’s already staked claims—open computing, shopping, mobile, advertising, e-mail, location-based services, and even search—it’s no stretch to imagine that Page might want to kick Google’s social efforts into high gear in an attempt to keep people from using Facebook for everything. More on TIME.com: Google with Larry Page as CEO Could Look More Aggressive Social Shopping Is Big Business, but What’s So ‘Social’ About It? That’s still quite a bit short of Groupon, which “is said to be pursuing a public offering at a valuation near $25 billion,” according to the Times, but for two companies that have each only been around for a few years, things are looking pretty good so far. But have these companies been able to raise so much money because of innovative social features? Or are they simply peddling good deals that people naturally share with one another? This whole “social” thing has been growing steadily hotter for a while now, spurned on by the success of sites like Facebook and Twitter, which I’d argue are truly social products. They facilitate communication between people and serve as meeting places—though not physical locations—for people to gather and exchange ideas. People use them to socialize. Then there’s “social shopping” from the likes of Groupon and LivingSocial. What’s social about Groupon? You could argue that since the site’s daily deals need to be purchased by a minimum number of users in order to be valid, there’s some impetus to get your friends to buy into the same deal you’re buying into. But my guess is that more often than not, people wait for strangers to scoop up the rest of the deals. That doesn’t seem too social. And some of the better deals are often e-mailed to friends and shared on Facebook or Twitter, but that behavior isn’t specific to social shopping sites. You can comment on deals too, which, again, isn’t a feature that can’t be found on plenty of other sites—social or otherwise. Then there’s LivingSocial, which functions very similarly to Groupon, but is actually slightly more social in that if you get three of your friends to buy the same deal you’ve just purchased, you

Google is taking another step towards its own social network without actually building its own social network (the company insists it’s only building social layers on top of the web) with the “+1″ button. If you’re down with Facebook’s “Like” button, then Google’s hoping you’ll use the new +1 button, too. Simply put, here’s how Google explains +1: “Use +1 to give something your public stamp of approval, so friends, contacts, and others can find the best stuff when they search. Get recommendations for the things that interest you, right when you want them, in your search results.” The “others” part that comes after friends and contacts is important, as “others” means everybody: “Your +1′s are public. They can appear in Google search results, on ads, and sites across the web. You’ll always be able to see your own +1′s in a new tab on your Google Profile, and if you want, you can share this tab with the world.” So you’ll have some control over items you’ve +1′d and you’ll be able to share a page with all your +1′d items on it, but remember that anything you’ve +1′d can show up in Google’s search results for all to see. Results from people you actually know and are connected to via your Google Profile will be presented more explicitly, while items that have been +1′d by strangers may simply appear with the sum total of +1s. Says Google: “Say, for example, you’re planning a winter trip to Tahoe, Calif. When you do a search, you may now see a +1 from your slalom-skiing aunt next to the result for a lodge in the area. Or if you’re looking for a new pasta recipe, we’ll show you +1’s from your culinary genius college roommate. And even if none of your friends are baristas or caffeine addicts, we may still show you how many people across the web have +1’d your local coffee shop.” You’ll be able to +1 Google ads and search results right away, and it won’t be long

The cloud? Good. No girlfriend? Bad. A cloud-based girlfriend? Better than no girlfriend, apparently. The idea behind Cloud Girlfriend is simple: You pay a yet-to-be-determined price to have your ideal (yet not for real) girlfriend leave you loving messages on your Facebook Wall for all to see. It’s an easy four-step process, says the site: “Step 1: Define your perfect girlfriend. Step 2: We bring her into existence. Step 3: Connect and interact with her publicly on your favorite social network Step 4: Enjoy a public long distance relationship with your perfect girl.” Step two sounds… odd. Are we talking about the fun Weird Science existence or the creepy, goopy Battlestar Galactica kind? And what about those pesky terms of service Facebook has in place forbidding the creation of fake accounts? Company co-founder David Fuhriman said, “The girlfriend is operated by a real girl. It is not a sex chat or pornography service,” according to PCMag. She’ll apparently hit you up on Twitter, too. I can’t imagine anyone being remotely interested in this serv—whup, the site says, “Due to high demand we are only able to accommodate a limited number of users to the site. Register early to get in line.” I stand corrected. Some questions remain: Cost? Actually a girl? What about Cloud Boyfriends? English as your primary language? Did I remember to pick up ground turkey for turkey burgers? Weren’t you going to do that? I don’t even like turkey burgers. How the hell are we even arguing about this? You don’t exist! Oh and keep in mind that April Fools’ Day is right around the corner, so any dumb tech news you hear between now and then could either be fake or just plain dumb. Sometimes both. More on TIME.com: Will You Webcast Your Funeral? Radio Toaster: Ultimate Convergence Device? Vacation With Your 12-Year-Old Virtual Girlfriend!?
What’s better than having one farm on Farmville? Having two farms –- and subsequently no social life –- of course! Last week, Zynga slowly rolled out Farmville English Countryside, the biggest expansion to Farmville since the launch of the game. English Countryside gives players level 20 and above an additional farm to tend to. “We’re hoping to get players who used to play Farmville back into the game,” Farmville general manager Todd Arnold told Techland. “It’s really something to keep our best fans engaged. They’ve been waiting for something big.” Let’s be clear: This is not a separate entity, but an expansion of the original game. In the English Countryside, you have unique items like a sheep pen and new crops including barley and hops to work with. The game addition also integrates features used in newer Zynga games like Cityville. You’ll finally get a coherent storyline, which is something Farmville has always been missing, and in-game missions. By now, if you’re a hardcore farmer, you’ve probably zipped through the mini-goals and are on your second farm in England. However, the majority of players are still fixing their zeppelin to the U.K. Arnold estimates it will take most players a couple of weeks before they’ll touch English soil. “We need to do that to make sure we aren’t releasing a buggy experience,” he explains. “When you have a user base daily of 14 million people playing the game, you have to roll it out in a controlled fashion.” Okay, but what’s the real reason Zynga doesn’t want to make it that easy to get to the English Countryside? It’s all part of their master plan to get old players who have abandoned their farms back on the plow. Getting to the England involves a lot of additional help from other gamers, and Zynga is hoping that if you annoy your friends who have fallen by the wayside to help you on your U.K. mission they’ll get suckered into playing the game again. In fact, it’s impossible to play the new

Given the prevalence of advanced mobile devices in Japan, there’s been no shortage of citizen-broadcast videos and imagery from the recent earthquake. Here are some of the better places to follow along online. VIDEOS YouTube’s CitizenTube channel has established a playlist of videos related to the disaster, with footage rolling in pretty regularly. Popular Japanese video sharing site Nico Nico Douga is streaming live on-the-ground coverage. See also here and here. Google’s video section culls clips from a bunch of different video sites—both user-generated and major news sites—so it’s got plenty of footage. Bing Videos has over 60 clips already, some from on the ground and some from news reports. Live video site Ustream has a few feeds going on in real-time, and plenty of previously-recorded footage from earlier coverage. Livestream will be hit or miss for coverage, but there’s been some live video from various places recently. Check under the Featured Live Channels on the main page of the Livestream website. Vimeo has some sporadic videos coming in, too. There seem to be more news reports here than citizen videos, though there’s still a handful of on-the-ground videos being uploaded. Video site Dailymotion has almost 200 videos so far, though most of them seem to be news footage. PHOTOS Photo sharing service Flickr has images pouring in. You can use the “Japan” tag to see the most recent photos that have been uploaded. Popular Twitter photo sharing service TwitPic has been experiencing an influx of images as well, though the site’s stability has been a bit shaky. Google’s Picasa has over 200,000 Japan-related images which, if ordered by most recent, contain some images of the recent events. There’s a fair amount of images that aren’t related to the event to sift through, though. MIXED MEDIA You can follow trending topics #japan and #tsunami directly on Twitter for a mix of text, images and videos. Google’s Realtime Results pulls in updates from all over the place as well. You can follow all the updates or choose only updates with images.

FriendShuffle takes the idea that you share similar interests with your Facebook friends and runs with it. You go to FriendShuffle.com and sign in with your Facebook credentials, and then any web address—article, video, blog post, whatever—that one of your friends has tagged using Facebook’s "like" button will show up chronologically in your FriendShuffle feed. You can "like" whatever one of your friends has liked or click the Shuffle button in the web-based bar that FriendShuffle inserts at the top of your browser to move on to the next site. ReadWriteWeb likens FriendShuffle to "StumbleUpon for Facebook Likes" which is pretty accurate. I took FriendShuffle for a spin and found it to be a dead-simple way to cruise through all the stuff that my Facebook friends have found interesting. It’d be nice to have some sort of adjustable settings area where I could see random pages from the past day, week, or month instead of seeing sites in the order of which they were tagged—or perhaps seeing sites that have been liked by multiple friends in order of popularity. The application insists on being able to e-mail you when you activate it inside Facebook, too, which is a bit concerning, though it indicates that you can unsubscribe from the first e-mail you get. It might be helpful to get a daily or weekly digest of the sites your friends have liked, I suppose, but so help me God if I get any spam, I will burn… this place… to the ground.
Apple’s special event next week will be pegged to music – that much we already know. There’s speculation that the Lala acquisition could come about next week but two separate outlets have reported that Apple won’t be bringing cloud-based streaming to iTunes, at least not yet. Boy Genius was tipped off social integration into iTunes 9 a couple weeks back. • The social networking integration that we reported iTunes 9 would have seems to be part of a bigger social networking push by Apple. We’ve been informed that Apple has plans to tie iTunes 9 into a “Social” application that they plan to release in the future. It was said that the application (separate from iTunes) will be similar to Yahoo’s OneConnect offering and consolidate all your social networking services. (iPhone application? Desktop app? Wasn’t clarified to us). • The application will allow you to broadcast what music you’re currently listening to, allow you to share your music with people on your network, connect with your friend’s friends (no clue on that one), and update all of your statuses at the same time. ITunes 9 will let you broadcast music statuses as well. • As far as the iTunes application organization feature, we’ve been told it allow you to sort your applications alphabetically, by genre, date added, and of course, custom arrangement. And today, Media Memo is reporting that iTunes will, in fact, see a facelift next week centered on social. Music industry executives commented that Steve Jobs and co. have not approached the major labels to rework their existing license deals that would allow cloud-based streaming. Media Memo’s sources fall in line with what BGR reported earlier this month. And rumors of a web-based iTunes gained a bit more momentum today, as well. There isn’t much meat to Kafka’s story on what the social aspect would entail but we won’t really know until next week anyway.
