May the force be with Electronic Arts. It’ll surely need all the help it can get to pull a Jedi-rabbit out of this sarlacc pit of a hat. In case you missed it, the world’s third-largest video game conglomerate just swooped down, presumably with dump trucks full of cash, and scooped up the exclusive multi-year rights to make new Star Wars games for a “core gaming audience.” Disney, which bought LucasFilm and Star Wars from George Lucas for about $4 billion last October, will retain the rights to design games for mobile, social and online audiences. This, after Disney shuttered historic game developer LucasArts last month. The AP apparently (and amusingly) read that as Disney possibly “giving up” on Star Wars video games. As if. That was just Disney winding up a developer that hadn’t made or published a really memorable Star Wars game — The Force Unleashed included — in over a decade. Now the license falls to the company Trip Hawkins built, one of gaming’s behemoths and a player that already has skin in the game: EA subsidiary BioWare put together Star Wars: The Old Republic, the second Star Wars MMO (after Sony’s defunct Star Wars: Galaxies), and by most accounts a reasonably successful one, even if it transitioned to free-to-play much more quickly (and worryingly) than expected. And yet EA has a spotty track record when it comes to franchise tie-ins. Whereas handing a major property off to a smaller, more creatively flexible studio can yield the occasional (and completely unexpected) Batman: Arkham Asylum, LEGO Star Wars, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay or Star Trek: Bridge Commander, the challenge when you ritualize conceptuality, then attempt to wring creativity from individuals on exacting timelines complicated by multi-platform demands and implacable shareholders is…well, it’s all but insurmountable. The result, more often than not, is mediocrity, and that’s typically your best-case scenario. With that in mind, here’s why I think the EA-Star Wars deal can’t possibly work…or, you know, maybe could, given the stars and planets aligning. EA’s initial trip down Star Wars lane was confused and

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Disney is not giving up on “Star Wars” video games after all. A month after shutting down game production at Lucasfilm subsidiary LucasArts, The Walt Disney Co. said Monday that it had entered multi-year deal with Electronic Arts Inc. to develop new “Star Wars” video games. According to a statement, EA will develop games for a “core gaming audience” while Disney will retain the right to develop titles for mobile devices, social platforms and online. Terms were not disclosed. Disney is aiming to make its money-losing interactive unit profitable this year and shifting some game development costs elsewhere should help. Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.06 billion in December. The company said last month that it will release a new “Star Wars” movie every year starting in 2015.

For some reason it’s not just news but front page headline news that Disney just shuttered LucasArts, a video game developer and publisher that used to make terrific video games. You might consider that in itself news of sorts, if — no spite intended, because a bunch of people just lost their jobs, and that’s never a happy thing — you agree with me that LucasArts hasn’t made a really great (or even all that good) game in ages. Disney, you’ve probably heard, snatched LucasFilm (and Star Wars) from George Lucas for about $4 billion last October — that purchase included LucasArts. That’s a lot of cash. Disney no doubt pored over the balance sheets, and, for whatever reason(s), at some point decided it was time for LucasArts’ 150 employees to go away. Here’s what Disney wrote in its press statement: After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles. My strongest memories of playing a LucasArts game (not my first) are of X-Wing during the summer of 1993. I was in Boston at the Berklee School of Music, studying jazz piano. Between lessons and jam sessions and my first harrowing attempts at transcribing a bunch of Oscar Peterson solos, I’d sit in front of a brand new DEC (as in Digital Equipment Corporation — yep, they briefly made personal computers, too) 486DX 66 MHz with a CH Products Flightstick Pro. I’d fiddled with other flight sims, including Microsoft’s (then up to v4.0), but nothing like X-Wing‘s epic space battles — the first game, in my view, to capture the grandeur of George Lucas’ still un-messed-with Star Wars universe. Zipping around in lithe A-Wings, battling crafty Imperial computer opponents with tactical flair — it was heady stuff for 1993, one of

This just in: a breaking report from The Galactic Empire Times is stating, per a press conference called by Lord Vader himself, that Obi-Wan Kenobi — the universe’s most wanted terrorist — is dead. Vader’s speech was stern yet brimming with optimism: “For over two decades, Kenobi has been the Jedi rebellion’s leader and symbol,” the Lord of the Sith said in a statement broadcast across the galaxy via HoloNet. “The death of Kenobi marks the most significant achievement to date in our empire’s effort to defeat the rebel alliance. But his death does not mark the end of our effort. There’s no doubt that the rebellion will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must and we will remain vigilant at home and abroad.” Sources indicate the intel used to confirm the whereabouts of the “high-value target” dates back as far as last summer. Curiously, the announcement comes at a time when the authenticity of Lord Vader’s birth certificate has been challenged, calling into question the validity of his status as Emperor Palpatine’s right-hand man per Galactic Republic Laws. The report concludes: “No Stormtroopers were seriously harmed,” Lord Vader said. “They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, I defeated my former master and took custody of his body.” Jedi tradition requires burial within 24 hours, but by doing it in deep space, Imperial authorities presumably were trying to avoid creating a shrine for his followers. Joshing aside, the GET’s new layout is eerily similar to the New York Times’, and much funnier than a final-issue parody laid out by Slate yesterday.
The next iPhone case you purchase will surely be this $35 Steve Jobs in Carbonite masterpiece found over on Society6.com’s website. “But Doug, $35 is far too expensive for a plastic iPhone case,” you say. Remember the part about how it’s Steve Jobs in Carbonite, though. While it’ll almost certainly be your next iPhone case, Wired points out that it may be Apple’s next legal case, too. And that’s assuming George Lucas doesn’t want a piece of the action as well. The case is available in both iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G(S) models—for now.
What do you get when you spend $1.2 billion on triple laser laboratories in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania? Try: The building blocks for a mind-boggling super laser that’s almost “didn’t I see that in a Keanu Reeves flick?” powerful. How much power are we talking? Probably not enough, say, to take out a planet with one ominous electric-green burst, but how about twice the total power output of all human civilization? Czech Position reports the European Commission just green-lit funding to spend about $400 million a piece on three “dedicated ultrafast laser laboratories” in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania. It’s called the Extreme Light Infrastructure project, and it will itself yield lasers more powerful than anything the world’s yet seen. Some comparison figures: The world’s most powerful operational laser fires at 1.1 petawatts, or 1.1 x 1015 watts–that’s a 10 with 15 zeroes after it (a drop in the bucket next to the super laser). The new lasers designed as part of the ELI project will fire at 10 petawatts each (though still paddling in the kiddie pool, power-wise). The total power received by the Earth from the sun is a whopping 174 petawatts (getting closer, but still shy of the mark). The total power of the super-laser? Try a staggering 200 petawatts, equivalent to twice the estimated power output of a Type I Kardashev scale civilization (a Type I civilization, at between 10 and 100 petawatts, has mastered the resources of its home planet, a Type II of its solar system, and a Type III of its galaxy). What’s the point of all that concentrated power? The possibilities are manifold and include both scientific and medical research, but it sounds like project coordinator Gerard Mourou hopes it might be enough to “trigger the breakdown of the vacuum, the fabric of space-time itself.” Sounds appropriately awe-inspiring (and perhaps a trifle terrifying). Just as long as it’s not making any of those more-than-short-lived micro black holes.
America is great for an endless number of reasons. But the freedom to spend outlandish amounts of money on nerd-ish pursuits that hold no greater meaning other than they’d be ridiculously, freakishly awesome? Our founding fathers smile down. Which is why we have to get behind this project to build a life-sized, fully operational AT-AT from The Empire Strikes Back. We have to. It’s more than civic duty; it’s our destiny. AT-AT for America was started by one Mike Koehlner, by all accounts a normal, honest man with no discerinble money and no mechanical expertise. But Mike’s dream to replicate — piece by piece, helping hand by helping hand — the quadrupedal death machines unleashed on Hoth’s rebel forces by Palpatine’s evil empire? That’s our dream too. Folks, let’s make this happen. How, you say? A KickStarter page is in the works (we’ll keep you posted), but you can donate at AT-AT for America and follow the project on Twitter. Then watch this and try not to pump your fist: More on TIME.com: Growing Up Star Wars: Rated M for Mawkish Wookies Aren’t From Star Wars?
Many people might say that Legoland is just for kids, but there’s often awesome exhibits that people of all ages can enjoy. The new Star Wars feature, opening on March 31 in Legoland California, is something that your whole family can peruse. Featuring animated scenes from the movies and the Clone Wars series, the exhibit took eight model makers and two animators as well as some of the staff at Lucasfilm about 1.5 million legos and about a year to make 1:20 scale versions of the scenes. You can also take pictures with brick-built versions of Chewbacca, R2-D2 and Darth Vader. Sadly, my homemade lego versions of the Millenium Falcon were never as cool or detailed as this. The seven scenes are, according to the LA Times: Episode I: Naboo Battle scenes at the royal palace and a flight hangar feature a duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul. Episode II: Geonosis Obi-Wan, Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker battle creatures in the Geonosis arena while nearby a battle unfolds between a droid army and Republic fighters. Episode III: Kashyyyk and Mustafar A battle rages on the Wookiee planet of Kashyyyk while Obi-Wan and Anakin engage in a fateful duel on the volcanic planet of Mustafar. Episode IV: Tatooine Obi-Wan, C-3PO and R2-D2 appear at Luke Skywalker’s childhood home in addition to scenes featuring the Mos Eisley Cantina band and Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon. Episode V: Hoth Imperial AT-ATs as well as Rebel snow speeders and X-wing fighters can be found on the icy planet of Hoth along with Luke, Han, Darth Vader and Princess Leia. Episode VI: Endor The Rebel Alliance defeats the evil Empire on the Ewok’s forest moon of Endor. Clone Wars: Christophis In a scene that chronologically takes place between Episodes II and III, Jedi Knights Anakin and Obi-Wan appear amid an 8-foot-tall Crystal City building. Similar exhibits in Legoland Denmark and Legoland Germany are also expected to open later in 2011.
We all knew it was coming, but now we have a tentative release date: Expect the entire Star Wars six-movie blu-ray set to be out in September. Check out the fans eagerly anticipating the Star Wars blu-ray announcement at CES (when they were probably supposed to be reporting on important news stories): You have three options (according to The Hollywood Reporter). Amazon is offering $50 off the preorder of the whole set and $25 off the smaller sets. The suggested MSRP is $139.99 and $69.99 for the other two respectively: – For The Completists: Star Wars: The Complete Saga will feature all six live-action features, along with three additional discs and more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes and an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives. - For Those Who Like Expensive Doorstops: A Prequel Trilogy will include Episodes I through III (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith) - For Those In Denial: Original Blu-ray Trilogy set will include Episodes IV-VI (1977′s A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Backand Return of the Jedi). Normally I would protest and complain about how George Lucas is just extorting more money from me. I mean, come on, haven’t I bought enough memorabilia and licensed merchandise from the expanded universe already? But then again, the picture is so crisp and shiny… More on TIME.com: How George Lucas Changed Special Effects in Filmmaking Forever Darth Vader: “Luke, I Knew I Was Your Father Two Years Early Gaming Tip Sheet: “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II”

Normally I would scoff at anyone who decided to review movies years after they were released when there’s no new material about the title coming out. However, when the review comes from Mike Stoklasa, aka Harry Plinkett, his long-winded, extremely detailed and completely accurate reviews are always a welcome opinion. Six years after Star Wars Episode III : Revenge of the Sith was released, Plinkett finally got around to watching the latest and not-so-greatest installment of the space opera, and, well he’s got a few words to say – more accurately, over an hour and 40 minutes worth of material. To summarize what Plinkett thought of Revenge of the Sith, I offer you this quote from his review: “The first thing we knew was the title, which of course you thought the obvious thing. If you simply rearrange the letters in the word sith, you could spell out a different word which could predict what this movie was going to be.” Part one is up above for you to enjoy, but if you want to get the whole experience here’s parts two and three. It might be longer than the movie he’s reviewing, but at least it’s is entertaining and doesn’t make you cringe and cry out for the days before George Lucas ruined your childhood.
As we close the door on 2010, you might find yourself wondering, “What was that year all about?” Well, finally you can find out, thanks to Hitwise listing the most searched-for terms on the internet over the last fifty-two weeks. For example, Facebook owned the year. Not only was “facebook” the most searched-for term of the year (with “facebook login,” “facebook.com” and “www.facebook.com” also in the top 10 – and, please, internet, I think those last two show that you need to learn the difference between the address bar and a search engine – and Facebook-related searches accounting for 3.48% of the top 50 web searches in 2010), but Facebook also took over the role of the most visited website of the year with Google dethroned… at least until you factor in Google-owned YouTube, which was the fifth most visited site of the year; adding those two together gives Google a totaly of 9.85% of all US web visits against Facebook’s 8.12%. The most searched-for movies of the year? Surprisingly, Star Wars leads the way, with Paranormal Activity 2, Avatar, Transformers 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailing behind. Television suffered more, though, with Dancing With The Stars, American Idol and The Young And The Restless taking top spots for specific programs, although “Hulu” was the top television-related search for the year. Lady Gaga topped the list of most searched-for musical artist, narrowly ahead of Justin Beiber (of course), but in terms of celebrities, it was all about Kim Kardashian, Oprah, Rush Limbaugh, Miley Cyrus and Glenn Beck. So, there you have it: 2010 was the year when Kim Kardashian and Oprah Facebooked each other about watching Star Wars on YouTube after catching up with Dancing With The Stars on Hulu. With that as its legacy, there’s no way that 2011 could fail to be an improvement.
