Google Maps’ Street View is becoming less and less about photographing the road to grandma’s house and more about getting you off the road entirely. The tech giant’s latest project, unveiled today, takes mapping initiatives to new and extreme heights by offering interactive galleries of some of the world’s tallest mountains. The views include four famous peaks from across the globe: the snow-capped Everest Base Camp in Asia’s Himalayas, dormant volcano Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Elbrus in Europe and Aconcagua in Pope Francis’ home country of Argentina. Users can drop into various camps and viewing locations along the mountains to explore 360-degree panoramas and trace the paths of some mountains’ trails with just a few clicks. “It feels like you’re walking through the gates of hell because there are mule skeletons sticking out of the ground,” Dan Fredinburg, one of the Google team members who photographed all four peaks, says about his experience at Aconcagua. “It was this out-of-world experience of entering into an environment where not many people go and knowing we were going to bring back that experience for others to see.” (VIDEO: Google Street View Lets You Explore the Grand Canyon) Fredinburg is a Google Adventurer. That’s not his normal title — he’s a technical program manager who works on Google’s privacy and security team — but his love of the extreme outdoors led him and his colleagues to start organizing visits to the highest mountains throughout the past year and a half. As they planned, another colleague suggested using their trip as an opportunity to collaborate with the Google Maps team, and their modern-day cartography mission was born. Google Maps uses a variety of devices besides cars to capture footage from all over the world, including pushcart trolleys, trikes and, on occasion, snowmobiles. Cliffside hiking, however, required a different strategy. The Trekker — the backpack camera apparatus Google used to photograph its Grand Canyon collection, which debuted in February — had yet to be invented when Fredinburg and friends set their sights on some summits.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Google and its street-view cameras already have taken users to narrow cobblestone alleys in Spain using a tricycle, inside the Smithsonian with a push cart and to British Columbia’s snow-covered slopes by snowmobile. The search giant now has brought its all-seeing eyes – mounted for the first time on a backpack – down into the Grand Canyon, showcasing the attraction’s most popular hiking trails on the South Rim and other walkways. It’s the latest evolution in mapping technology for the Mountain View, Calif., company, which has used a rosette of cameras to photograph thousands of cities and towns in dozens of countries for its Street View feature. With a click of the mouse, Internet users are transported virtually for a 360-degree view of locales they may have read about only in tourist books and seen in flat, 2-D images. “Any of these sort of iconic, cultural, historical locations that are not accessible by road is where we want to go,” said Ryan Falor, product manager at Google. Google announced the trekker earlier this year but made its first official collection of data this week at the Grand Canyon. The backpacks aren’t ready for volunteer use, but Google has said it wants to deploy them at national forests, to the narrow streets of Venice, Mount Everest and to ancient ruins and castles. The move to capture the Grand Canyon comes after Apple chose to drop Google Maps from its mobile operating systems and opted to use its own mapping program that was derided for, among other things, poor directions and missing towns. Steve Silverman, operations manager for Google didn’t directly address the competition in saying: “Just trying to document a trail, it’s going to be hard to beat this.” Google launched its Street View feature in 2007 and has expanded from five U.S. cities to more than 3,000 in 43 countries. Google teams and volunteers have covered more than 5 million miles with the Street View vehicles on a scale that other companies haven’t

flâneur – noun; idler or lounger Everyone loves mooching around the streets of a strange city via the wonderful Street View feature on Google Maps. But even so, there’s a lot of tedious clicking and mousing to be done if you really want to get the feel of a place. What we need is a more relaxing way to explore. London-based writer, publisher, and coder James Bridle thought the same, and decided to do something about it. The result is Robot Flâneur, a site designed to put the awe back in exploration. Pick a city (a selection of some of the world’s biggest and most interesting is on offer), hit the full screen button, and sit back with the cool drink of your choice to enjoy the ride. The Robot will load up random street views from that city, cycling through them slowly so you have plenty of time to take it all in. If you don’t like what you’re seeing, it’s easy to skip onto the next thing. If you do, it’s just as easy to pause. Techland got in touch to ask Bridle what it was all about. He said: “I like cities a lot. I’m currently reshooting Patrick Keiller’s film London and working on an actual book about maps, and I’ve also got an ongoing project called the New Aesthetic which is in part concerned with the way that machines see, and Robot Flaneur is very much a product of those interests.” But it was also for the geolulz too? “Yeah, for the geolulz too, obviously.” More on TIME.com: Google Pedals Street View Trike Through Roman Colosseum, Other Touristy Sites Google in Germany: Houses Egged, Sidewalk Birth Hoaxed Google Maps Now Open for Editing in U.S.

Auf wiedersehen, Google Street View. There’s going to be no more new street view pictures in Germany, says the search engine company. Google isn’t taking any of the old Street View pictures down, but they’re not adding or updating any either. Street View was just launched in Germany last summer, but was scrutinized for its privacy after pictures showed up of random people picking their nose, taking a dump behind a tree, or any other types of incriminating shots. Thanks to the country’s privacy laws, Google gave German residents to option to have their homes blurred out if they wanted. A recent court decision has made street photography legal, so Google has no current reason to pull away. The company says their new, “business priority is to use our Google cars to collect data such as street names and road signs to improve our basic maps for our users in a similar way that other mapping companies do.” Still given the difficulties Google has faced in Germany, it’s also possible the company has just decided to give up dealing with the hundreds of thousands of citizens that have decided to have their home, property, or business blurred out. Just keep in mind that you might want to double-check the address of your hotel on vacation in Germany. It might be a restaurant in the future.
Planning a vacation around Europe? Don’t bother. Google has captured all of it on Street View by now. All of it. These newfangled Street View trikes let Google go where no car can, joining hoards of black-socks-with-sandals tourists inside the Roman Colosseum, the Baths of Diocletian, the Cupola in Florence and Chateau de Fontainebleau in France. I saw all these same places right after I graduated from college. Had Google Street View been around at the time, I could have avoided the gang of sticky-fingered children who tried (but failed) to pickpocket me outside the Colosseum (Who’s laughing at my fanny pack with the combination lock now?!), the McDonalds outside Fontainebleau (no free refills), and the overweight family from the deep south who all bought mesh hats with fans built into the brims along the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. Although seeing that was almost worth the entire trip alone. Man, they loved those hats. I don’t actually advocate Googling your way through Europe instead of going there yourself, of course. You’ll see some breathtaking historical sites, beautiful architecture and, if you’re lucky, several three-wheeled bicycles with panoramic cameras ding-ding-dinging their bells as they weave their way through the crowded, narrow side streets.
After unveiling its lovably dinky trike a few weeks ago, Google Street View has updated its homepage to give users a behind-the-scenes peek at how the Street View team operates. This added transparency is not without reason, as Google Street View continues to be mired in controversies around the globe concerning privacy. The new site makes it easier to see where Google’s team has taken to the streets, and also features a section on the team’s methods and how they address privacy concerns. But all the legal stuff aside, the best part about the new site is the neatly organized gallery of notable places on Street View. It’s an addictive and easy way to explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Versailles or remote places like Half Moon Island in Antarctica. So if you excuse me, I’m going to go back to exploring Manana Island, Hawaii.
Oh, Germany. You’ve given us plenty to think about today when it comes to Google’s controversial Street View service. A supposed Street View-captured birth made the rounds earlier and even though Google’s team in Germany confirmed it to be fake, you have to hand it to whomever took the time to either stage the photo in magnificent detail or whip up a little bit of Photoshop magic. Here’s the photo (full resolution here): Notice the haphazardly-parked car, the man on the right calling for help, the man on the left gawking, and the man on the far left that’s like, "I really don’t have time to get involved with whatever’s going on here." Well crafted. And then there’s this gem. With all the uproar in Germany about Google being forced to let homeowners opt out of having their houses pictured in Street View photos, you’d think the Google-mobiles that capture the 360-degree snapshots would be the targets of many an egging. Not so. It appears that Google fans have resorted to egging houses that have opted out of Street View. The BBC reports that some homes "have been pelted with eggs and had ‘Google’s cool’ notices pinned to their doors." Google says that they "by no means consider this to be acceptable behaviour," likely while trying not to smirk at the thought of someone writing "Google’s cool" on a post-it note and sticking it to an egg-covered door.
