It’s the saga no one knew or cared much about until David Fincher’s The Social Network turned up the volume: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg hoodwinks fellow Harvard students (and twins) Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss out of millions in Facebook profits. The twins sue and win some of those millions in a settlement. But it turns out those multimillions aren’t enough (translation: Facebook “misrepresented” the stock value at time of settlement), and so the twins appeal to have the settlement “undone” so they can go after mo’ money. So much for try-try-again. A federal appeals court ruled today that a settlement’s a settlement–no do-overs for the Winklevoss twins, who the court said knew what they were getting into when they buried the hatchet with Facebook in 2008. That settlement for $8.88 a share brought them an estimated $20 million and partial ownership of Facebook itself, a deal estimated to be worth $65 million. Not bad for roughly four years’ litigation. But not good enough for the Winklevoss twins, who claim they wouldn’t have settled if they’d known the “true” stock value, allegedly four times higher. Next up: A possible Supreme Court appeal, though I can’t imagine the country’s highest court would deign to bother. Interestingly, with Facebook now valued at $50 billion, the Winklevoss’s settlement clocks in at upwards of $160 million. I realize from a legal standpoint it’s all relative, but try telling that to the rest of us, who’ll be lucky to make just one or two million over the full course of our working lives.

Mark Zuckerberg came face-to-face with not just one, but two evil twins Saturday. (Yes, Andy. “Awkward” is right.) The Facebook CEO joined actors Jesse Eisenberg and Andy Samberg on stage for Saturday Night Live’s opening monologue after arguing that he was, in fact, the real Mark Zuckerberg. “That guy’s like my evil twin, and that’s just Andy Samberg,” he said. “Those guys are such nerds. Come on, I invented poking.” (More on Techland: The Social Network Filmmakers Thank Zuckerberg During Golden Globes) Eisenberg, who is nominated for an Oscar for his role as Zuckerberg in 2010’s The Social Network, first traded Zuck techniques with SNL funnyman Samberg, who also dons a hoodie for his own Zuckerberg character. While Samberg confessed that all it took to get him into character was donning Zuck’s signature monochromatic wardrobe scheme, Eisenberg admitted his “fictionalized character” was achieved by speaking in short, clipped sentences while not moving his head. “Of course,” he said just before his real-life counterpart came on stage, “I wasn’t playing the real Mark Zuckerberg.” While the relationship between Zuckerberg and filmmakers behind The Social Network, now an Academy Awards’ Best Picture nominee, was undeniably tense around the time of the film’s release, both sides seem to have lightened up. While accepting the awards, both producer Scott Rudin and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin thanked Zuckerberg personally. “I wanted to say to Mark Zuckerberg, if you’re watching tonight, Rooney Mara’s character makes a prediction at the beginning of the movie, she was wrong,” Sorkin said while accepting his award for Best Screenplay. “You turned out to be a great entrepreneur, a visionary and an altruist.” But that was nothing next to the Eisenberg-Zuckerberg team up NBC managed to produce Saturday. (More on Techland: Five Tips For A Savvier Facebook Profile) After finally coming face-to-face, a visually nervous Eisenberg and surprisingly calm Zuckerberg were alone together while the world gawked in anticipation. “I really liked you on 60 Minutes,” Eisenberg squeaked, before acknowledging the Oscar nominated elephant in the room. “Did you ever end up

As The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg (an Oscar nominee for his role as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg) takes the reigns of Saturday Night Live tomorrow night, his real life counterpart could join him on stage. (More on Techland: The Social Network Filmmakers Thank Zuckerberg During Acceptance Speech) The New York Post is reporting that Zuckerberg might make a cameo appearance on the show “to show he has a sense of humor” about the film that portrayed, or “misportrayed” as he claims, his creation of Facebook. All together, The Social Network is up for eight Oscars this year including Best Picture, Best Director (David Fincher), Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), Original Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), Achievement in Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Mixing and Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg.) The awards will air on Feb. 27.
The Hollywood-types behind cultural juggernaut The Social Network want you to know they really do “Like” Mark Zuckerberg, even if his film counterpart is something of an unflattering shadow. The film picked up trophies for Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Score and Best Picture at Sunday’s Golden Globes, and while acceptance speeches featured the usual thank yous, Zuckerberg also found himself onto those pocketed sheets of paper. “I want to thank everybody at Facebook; Mark Zuckerberg for his willingness to allow us to use his life and work as a metaphor through which to tell a story about communication and the way we relate to each other,” producer Scott Rudin said while accepting the award for Best Picture, while screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s remarks seemed much more personal. “I wanted to say to Mark Zuckerberg, if you’re watching tonight, Rooney Mara’s character makes a prediction at the beginning of the movie, she was wrong. You turned out to be a great entrepreneur, a visionary and an altruist.” Has the “Sorry We Made You Out To Be Something Of An Ass” speech finally come? Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of Zuckerberg is unforgiving and at times almost scathing, fueled by Sorkin’s quick-witted script byway of Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires. Zuckerberg had absolutely nothing to do with the film or the book it’s based on, leaving The Social Network a very much unauthorized tale of Facebook creationism, with Zuck speaking out against the story’s inaccuracies before finally giving up and taking the entire company to see the film on opening day. (A classy move, in my opinion.) Still, having real-life inspiration in attendance at big award shows is commonplace and while Temple Grandin, Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund were all Globes attendees Sunday night, Zuckerberg certainly wasn’t swapping wardrobe notes with Eisenberg. I doubt even an shot at Oscar attendance could lure him into marketing something that displayed a fictionalized version of every mistake his 19-year-old self made, but the beauty is that he doesn’t have to. Everything Facebook seems to touch this year

In the first full-length trailer, we get the first look at footage of David Fincher’s The Social Network, and the film’s portrayal of Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg. Backed by choral rendition of Radiohead’s Creep, we get our first look at Jesse Eisenberg’s Zuckerberg as the song settles in on the lyrics “But I’m a creep. I’m a weirdo,” hinting that the film’s depiction of him may be anything but flattering. We also get our first looks at Andrew Garfiled (Hey there, new Spidey!) as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and Justin Timberlake as ex-Facebook president Sean Parker.
The downside to producing a film about the most-used social networking system of all time? Being blacklisted by said social network. David Fincher’s upcoming The Social Network, an unauthorized story about the creation of Facebook, is unable to market the film on the site itself. According to a Slash Film post, the film violates Facebook’s marketing terms of use, which stipulate that ad copy must not reference Facebook without permission. Given that both teaser trailers have painted Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg in a not-so gracious light, we can only guess that Facebook may not go along with the film’s desire to advertise. Still, the decision not to pursue Facebook marketing was ultimately Sony’s. “My understanding is that they asked us for our ad guidelines and decided not to advertise on us after receiving them,” head of PR for Facebook, Elliot Schrage, told All Things Digital. “I don’t think they ever submitted ad copy for us to review.” More on Techland: The Social Network Teaser Trailer #2 Features Status Updates!
Like the first trailer, the second teaser trailer for The Social Network is void of any actual footage from the film about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook, but it’s ripe with drama and suspense. I can’t wait to find out what happens! Did Zuckerberg steal the idea for Facebook?! October can’t come soon enough!!! Sidenote: I can’t believe they’re making a movie about Facebook. Are they going to make one about Twitter, too? FourSquare?

This first teaser trailer is just that – a tease. Void of any actual footage of upcoming film The Social Network, the trailer gives the impression that David Fincher’s Facebook origin film is more Kramer vs. Kramer than Ivy League go get ‘em flick. Look at those descriptors: Punk, Genius, Prophet, Traitor, Billionaire? Where I’d give them genius (maybe) and billionaire (definitely), I’m seriously questioning the rest. Prophet? Really? (More on Techland: Only Hot Chicks Care About Facebook Privacy) Still, given that Facebook hit more than 500 million users this year, The Social Network (starring Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake) is rightfully creating a good amount of buzz, but is it buzz they can cling to until October 1st? The merits of those involved with the film make me believe it’s possible, but only if the next time they release something described as, “a trailer,” it really is one.
