A tablet designed for young children, like the one Toys "R" Us just announced, seems like a good idea in theory. Instead of giving up your precious iPad, Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire, why not give kids a tablet of their own, pre-loaded with child-friendly apps and flexible parental controls? The idea doesn't work, though, if the tablet's hardware can't cut it.

The impending re-release — and revamping — of the iconic Furby electronic toy from the 1990s certainly tickled the area of our brains associated with nostalgia. Ever since it was announced, we've been thinking of other classic playthings that have either fallen by the wayside or still exist but are in dire need of a refresh. Join us on a tour of favorites from our youth and how we think they could be improved — with technology!

Could tablets like the iPad ever replace toys like LEGOs, Erector Sets and crayons? Probably not, but startup Launchpad Toys thinks the iPad (and presumably tablets in general) has the potential to. Okay, so the iPad’s already fairly toy-like. If you have one and kids, or you’re just a big kid (like me), you’ve probably goofed around with toy-like apps. Take iBrite, which is basically Light Brite for tablets (or just take Hasbro’s official Light Brite app). Also: Battleship, Crayolas, Simon, Barbie something-or-other, Army Men, Play-Doh, LEGOs, Etch-A-Sketch and Weeble Wobbles, all with App Store versions for Apple’s storied tablet. Okay, a few of those are technically games, but you get the point. The toy-ification of the tablet-verse is happening. (LIST: 15 Fantastic Gadgets for Father’s Day) But happening at a relatively glacial pace. Where’s Mr. Potato Head? Slinky? G.I. Joe? The Transformers? My Little Pony? Silly Putty? Tinker Toys? A few cheap knockoffs and “mature” parodies notwithstanding, the toy community’s just scratching the surface of the tablet market, to say nothing of all the completely original toy-like tablet apps still unrealized. Enter Launchpad Toys, a startup looking to build piles of toy-like iPad apps aimed at actually educating kids. According to TechCrunch, they’re aiming to be “the Lego of digital play” and not just figuratively. They’re looking to bring in classic toys like Play-Doh, Crayola and Erector Sets, but in ways that hew to the National Education Assocation‘s educational standards. Take the company’s premiere iPad app, Toontastic. It lets kids create stories using virtual characters and record audio to give them voices, then run the whole thing back as a kind of virtual puppet show. TechCrunch reports the app was just added to Apple’s App Store Hall of Fame, and that it’s managed to snag 40,000 paid downloads. I’m not sure where, specifically, the NEA links come in, but it certainly sounds like a step in that direction. Hold up, you may be saying.
Only a weirdo would use a thirty-year-old word processor to get real work done. (I know what I’m talking about: I used word processors back then, and don’t want to go back.) There’s nothing particularly strange, however, about playing thirty-year-old electronic games. Such as Ms. Pac-Man, for instance, a game that’s still beloved and available on a bevy of modern platforms. Liking to play Ms. Pac-Man, in fact, is probably a good sign that you’re perfectly normal. (LIST: Top 10 Tech Toys for 2011) I thought about this week as I wrote about Sifteo Cubes for my new Technologizer column on TIME.com. Cubes are 1.5″ squares with color screens and a sense of the world around them—they know if you’ve tilted them, flipped them, or held two of them together. And they run a bunch of clever games, with more on the way. I started my column by noting that the history of electronic playthings is rife with failures—including some pretty high-profile products that looked neat but weren’t interesting enough over the long haul to justify their sometimes lofty prices. (Yes, AIBO, I’m looking at you.) But there are some electronic toys that’ll live forever, or close enough. Ms. Pac-Man and her spouse are two of them. So is one I mentioned in the Sifteo story: Milton Bradley’s Simon. I don’t think that Simon in its original 1978 form is available at the moment, but I’m sure it’ll come back—and Hasbro offers Simon Flash, a version that’s basically Simon crossed with a dirt-cheap version of Sifteo’s Cubes. These games don’t offer rich gameplay. They’re not flashy. (Ms. Pac-Man might have been in 1981, but by 1984 or so it looked retro.) They’re just very, very simple, but still challenging. That’s the key to their success. It’s also why some modern-day games, such as Bejeweled, just keep going and going. Is Sifteo’s creation simple enough to succeed? Well, it’s not one simple game—it’s a gaming platform, and so in some ways it’s the simplicity of the apps that’ll determine its chances.

You’ve got your Toys “R” Us Geoffrey Giraffe umbrella, your Buzz Lightyear talking action figure, and your Sassy ring-o-links, but wait–aren’t you forgetting something? Your know, like an Apple iPad 2? If you’d rather grab your toys and totable tech all at once, it looks like you’ll soon have the option: According to ModMyi.com, Toys “R” Us will add Apple’s fast-selling slate to its catalogue in May this year. (More on TIME.com: Apple’s iPad 2: It’s Still the One) If true, it would make Toy “R” Us the latest brick-and-mortar coup for Apple in a series of nontraditional retail maneuvers, from adding iPad resellers like Best Buy and Walmart to Radio Shack and Target. ModMyi says it was able to substantiate the rumor with pictures plucked from an employee training session. One shot is of a knowledge quiz offering points for answering questions about the iPad 2 correctly, while the other appears to be a “product knowledge sheet” with the company’s trademark backwards-”R” emblazoned at top left. Does Apple really have stock to supply another retailer in view of supply-chain worries and high product demand? It seems so. The question now is, will Toys “R” Us categorize it as a “Boy’s Toy,” “Girl’s Toy,” “Video Game Console,” “Movies and Electronics” item, or all of the above?

It sounds a little silly to think of “tech toys” as a side category these days. Once an expensive minority, toy makers are adopting newer technologies every year – it seems like almost everything needs a battery or power source now. This year’s Toy Fair was no different. Combing the aisles, I found the ten toys with new or interesting technology that’ll make your kid say “gimme.”

If a mobile game featuring birds with special powers that destroy the elaborate dwellings of their pig-like enemies has gotten too complicated for you, perhaps you’d like to try your hand at the analog version. This May, Mattel will see how the masses take to the $15 Angry Birds “Knock on Wood” play set. As iLounge reports, the getup consists of red, yellow and black birds, a slingshot launcher, and several green pigs and wooden blocks to wreak havoc upon. If that sounds too barbaric, Mattel will also apparently be launching “a card-based Angry Birds game,” according to iLounge.
Remember the View-Master? Imagine replacing those little round plastic disks with an iPhone and you’ve basically nailed down what Hasbro’s trying to do with the My3D iPhone accessory. Due out next spring, the My3D kit will pair an iPhone-mountable viewing apparatus that costs $30 with—you guessed it—apps available from the iPhone’s app store. Some will be free, some will cost money. (More on Time.com: Gallery: Hits and Misses from Apple So Far) Apps will be in 3D and span “gaming, virtual travel experience, and entertainment content,” according to the Associated Press. It’s interesting to note that the View-Master, made by Fisher-Price, still exists and the company still sells new photo reels for around $4 apiece. (More on Time.com: Photos: The iPhone 3G Hits Stores) Can we expect an iPhone-versus-Android style platform war to break out between Hasbro lovers and Fisher-Price apologists? Who will have the most apps?! View-Master or My3D?!! Which side will you choose?!!!
NERF’s Blast-a-Ball system was about as advanced as I got when it came to foam-based childhood gun fights. This $50 NERF Longstrike Sniper Rifle would have rendered my shotgun-like Blast-a-Ball shooter utterly useless. The three-foot Longstrike is capable of picking off targets from up to 35 feet away and can be broken down into two pieces for easy transport. Oh, and it’s got a flip-up sight, quick-reload clip, and six darts. Of course it does. My Blast-a-Ball had two balls and close to zero accuracy. It sure sounded cool, though.
Hot damn. This remote control Mario Kart set not only lets you race your favorite characters around on your kitchen floor, but the controllers feature built-in virtual projectiles and power-ups in the form of shells, banana peels, mushrooms, stars, and more. The karts apparently have built-in sensors, so when you get hit from another player’s shell, for instance, your kart will vibrate and slow down. I’d guess that activating a mushroom or star would give you a little speed boost, too, but hard as I try, I just can’t seem to be able to read Japanese. They’ll be available from Amazon’s Japan site on June 19th for around $30 each. Hopefully they’ll make their way stateside sooner or later. Better start working on that real-life replica of Rainbow Road just to be on the safe side. via Newlaunches More on Techland: Mario Kart Meets Call of Duty: Hands-On with Blur

I don’t know about you folks, but I couldn’t be happier to put May to bed. Summer is literally just around the corner, which means we’ll be retreating into air-conditioned theaters for those so-called blockbusters, among other things. But before we jump into what the Hive Mind is looking forward to in June, let’s take a minute to quickly recap May. Culture: LOST finally ended and we’re still just as confused as we were during the first season. If you haven’t read Lev’s review of the finale then you haven’t lived. Do so now. Megan Fox was booted from Transformers 3, which we’re all sad about but she’s being replaced by the lovely English Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Megan who? Allie began her Trekkie in Training. Let’s hope she doesn’t run away. The great Frank Frazetta passed away. RIP. The Comic Book Club is on a roll. Won’t you join? The Cape? Really? No Ordinary Family? Rip-off? Gadgets: Google aka Cybernet will soon invade your TV with the aptly named Google TV that launches this fall. They even made translation easier with Goggles Translate. Even though the deal hasn’t been finalized, HP announced that a webOS tablet and webOS printer were in the pipeline. Joy. Games: Steam finally launched for Mac. Finally. Little Big Planet 2 was officially announced for the fall. Squee. Will Red Dead Redemption topple Alan Wake as game of the year? Miscellany: Wil Wheaton decided to join the Hive Mind! Hooray! Has anyone reached the kill screen on Google’s Pac-Man? What was your geekiest moment? Without further ado, here’s what the Hive Mind is looking forward to in June.
Allie alluded to our Toy Fair adventures yesterday in the Daily Dose and today we bring you Techland’s Best of Toy Fair 2010. Selections were made for kids ranging in age from 6-90. Some are motorized and interactive while others need to be under lock and key, but mostly, they’re fun and enjoyable for all. So, without further ado, here’s the list in no particular order.
