Nicely done, Bethesda. You got us to pay attention to something we otherwise might have tossed in the “yay, press release” bin. If you’re just joining, meet The Evil Within, a survival-horror game that’s no relation to the 1970 film starring Bollywood actress Zeenat Aman, the 1993 film starring Drew Barrymore, or the fifth episode of Blade: The Series. Bethesda confirmed the game’s existence this morning after teasing two oblique looping VINE clips — one juxtaposing barbed wire and Bach, the other depicting a mysterious figure and combusting sunflowers. Why such a pedestrian title? Who knows. Maybe it’ll be ironic. More likely it won’t, because, well, “Dead Space,” “Resident Evil,” “Deadly Premonition” and all that. Not that titles need be profound; “BioShock Infinite” isn’t exactly lyric poetry. Bethesda says the game’s in development at Tango Gameworks — a newish game studio founded in 2010 by Resident Evil series creator Shinji Mikami — with a projected 2014 release (for both current and next-gen consoles). I’m no great fan of the early Resident Evil games, but Mikami wrote and directed Resident Evil 4, which is where the series got interesting. Plus: God Hand and Vanquish, both games you might not have played, but should. Let’s talk about the trailer, which despite wallowing in cliché, actually manages to be scary. First, the stuff you’ve seen before… The sublime against the disturbing: the vinyl LP of Bach’s “Air on the G String” played on a harpsichord. Recall the scene in The Silence of the Lambs where Anthony Hopkins pounds the life, literally, out of his captors, as Glenn Gould’s 1955 performance of the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations plays. Poor Bach, relegated to backgrounding shock video. The psyche ward from hell: shots of darkened hallways in a grubby institutional facility with rogue wheelchairs, jaundiced cage-lights and scuffed doors with tiny square windows (cribbed from a ScrapeTV image of a “mental hospital door”?). With a bit of luck, this’ll just be backstory and we won’t have to slog through another building with padded cells, hellish boiler rooms and sepulchral torture

You realize figuring out what Bethesda’s up to is basically impossible. That’s by design. No way the publisher of The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and Fallout 3 and Dishonored is going to tell you what they’re really doing, not when they can send us all off chasing our tails, obsessing over flickering minutia in a teaser video for an upcoming project – said tease authenticated by Bethesda’s Jason Bergman as a tease – like good little post-Lost‘ies. Before we dive in, let’s get the official “What it’s not” out of the way: a new Fallout game, or probably anything to do with Fallout. There. Bethesda’s Pete Hines confirmed as much in response to presumptions that the VINE-based clip of music and barbed wire somehow referenced the retro-post-apocalyptic setting. Fallout 3 arrived over four years ago, and Hines has said the company intends to make further games in the series, but whatever this is, it’s not that (if you want to get technical, I suppose it could still be something Fallout-related, say a spinoff series in the same ‘verse that doesn’t use the Fallout name, but I’d bet not, though hey, a Fallout pre-apocalypse-quel?). Here’s the four-second clip, and yes, the scattershot editing and flashing is there to torture puzzle-lovers: You’re looking at rotating barbed wire, obviously — in fact blue-lit barbed wire, which if we pull out our snobby symbology guides and page to “blue,” suggests the ocean, calm and serenity, which — juxtaposed with oppression, denial of freedom — suggest…okay, I’ll stop. After the barbed wire, you’re looking at a rotating vinyl record referring to The Moonbeam Trio, a musical group (apparently a vocal male sometime trio, sometime quartet) that actually existed back in the 1930s, directed by George Shackley. The record refers to “Planned program service program no. 416,” which Polygon noticed includes songs like “Chanson de Florian” (originally written by Charles Ives) and “Grandfather’s Clock” (a traditional folk song) referring to a real 13-minute, 10-second 33-1/3 LP by “The Moonbeam Trio with organ and violin,” according to WorldCat. Wildly confused? Mission accomplished, Bethesda! That’s

The new Mists of Pandaria trailer shows the expansion's nearly four minute long opening. It's quintessentially Blizzard with every ridiculous detail rendered down to the cracked, blackened grooves in someone's battle-torn fingernails. Think of it as a more bearded version of something Dreamworks might do (and with actual beards, too).

Who or what are the Dawnguard, you ask? Bethesda’s finally answered, earlier than expected, in a surprise 1:37 long trailer for the eponymous forthcoming Skyrim expansion pack. Think vampire hunters in heavy plate, like a medieval version of Sergey Lukyanenko’s Day Watch. It looks like you’ll be doing some work for a vampire lord, whose initial voice-over teases a morality play: “You have found our fortress. You have returned my daughter. But what is it you seek? Is it to be one of us? To make the darkness your own? To feast on the souls of the living?” In other words: Will you scratch your sanguinary itch with the vampires and stand against the Dawnguard? Or make like Dudley Do-Right and skewer the vamps? You’ll be able to purchase and download Dawnguard this summer, exclusive to the Xbox 360 for 30 days, for 1600 MS Points, or $20. Bethesda calls it a “game add-on” in the trailer, as opposed to “downloadable content.” I imagine it’ll be substantial, considering Skyrim creative lead Todd Howard said in February that the company wanted to take more time with the game’s followup content (than it did with Fallout 3‘s) and that the add-ons would “feel closer to an expansion pack.” MORE: The 10 Best New Skyrim Mods for May 2012

As expected, Bethesda just released a teaser trailer for The Elder Scrolls Online, dropping it dead center of the official website for the forthcoming online roleplaying game. There’s not much to see yet, just a minute and ten seconds of brooding voiceover as someone holds forth about the state of the realm, e.g. the imperial throne “sits empty,” chaos rules, ancient enemies “band together,” salvation “cannot come from one hero alone” and so forth. Sure, we already know how things turn out, story-wise, since the game takes place a thousand years before Skyrim, but there’s that whole journey versus destination thing. (PHOTOS: This Is What The Elder Scrolls Online Looks Like: 17 Leaked Screens) Bethesda calls yesterday’s reveal by Game Informer of the game’s existence “long awaited” in the YouTube trailer’s description. I’m not sure all the series’ fans would agree: Reactions have been mixed, if we’re talking about what folks are saying on the official Bethesda message board for the game. “This is a horrible idea,” reads one thread’s title. Another calls it “the death of roleplaying.” And a third advises fans to simply ignore it entirely. My advice: Don’t sweat it. Whether the MMO turns out to be awful, mediocre or brilliant, Bethesda’s made it clear the studio developing TESO – ZeniMax Online Studios — is independent from the folks making the solo games (like Skyrim), and that the latter should continue indefinitely.
While the cosplay memories of the 2011 Penny Arcade Expo may fade, the glimpses of great games to come will keep gamers warm for many nights. Coming right at the cusp of the end-of-year holiday rush, PAX Prime seems to be serving as a last peek into the crazy months of September and December, as well as planting seeds of awareness for games that might impress in the next calendar year. (PHOTOS: Who Are You Supposed to Be?: Cosplay at PAX Prime 2011) Here are five games—most of them from small independent development teams—that excited me at this year’s fanfest. Quantum Conundrum Maybe the biggest surprise at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo was the announcement of this new game from Kim Swift, the co-creator of Portal. Developed by Airtight Games, Quantum Conundrum‘s a physics-based first-person puzzle game to rescue quirky inventor uncle Professor Fitz Quadwrangle. This uncle’s a famous scientist who’s disappeared and you’ll need to visit rooms in his sprawling mansion and shift them into various dimensions, like the Fluffy Dimension where heavy things become much lighter. QC‘s going to be a downloadable title that’s out early next year for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Video game grudge matches rarely come this perfectly designed. This fall, Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 come out within weeks of each other, trying to capture the free time of millions of gamers worldwide. But, it’s not just the fact that both titles are realistically styled war games set in what’s pretty much the present-day. There’s an intense rivalry between publishers EA and Activision, one that’s seen creative leaders go from one company to the other and back again, with courtroom salvos fired along the way. Call of Duty‘s been the leading shooter franchise for the last few years running, with last year’s Black Ops breaking sales records as Modern Warfare 2 did before that. EA’s not been shy about saying that they want to knock COD off of the top of the mountain, with both execs and developers taking shots at Activision’s big money-maker. This is going to be a heavyweight bout. So, seeing both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 at this year’s E3 amounted to a pre-fight weigh-in. Though reps for EA and Activision didn’t mention their counterpart’s big war game, the presence of the impeding competition hung in the air. (PHOTOS: A Brief History of Halo) I saw enough of each game to come away with opinions on both, and even predictions on where each game will win out this fall.

Though Sony’s been under lots of heat for continually flubbing their still-not-working PlayStation Network, I have to say: this new trailer for SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs — especially in light of all the SEALS-related newsmaking this week — is pretty compelling. Watch it down below and note some of the (I’m sure) carefully selected rhetoric: “We are in and out before the world even knows there was a problem,” or “You don’t know our faces, but you know our seal.” A tad overt, especially when held against the more action-oriented script chosen for the older trailer. Regardless, it’s interesting stuff, and the gameplay looks promising enough to give Call of Duty head’s a bit of competition (once they can get online, anyway). The game and its “Full Deployment Edition” are available starting today.
A free trailer for the new Buffy The Vampire Slayer motion comic series is available on iTunes. (Can’t embed, sorry.) The series, the first episode of which is rumored to debut sometime later today, follows the Season 8 Buffy comic from Dark Horse which continues where the series finale of the show left off. The series will chronicle the first 19 issues of the comic, according to Comic Book Resources. Here’s iTunes’ official description: Proving once and for all that you can’t keep a good Slayer down, Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight picks up where the smash-hit TV show left off! Based on the award-winning Dark Horse comic book series, these eye-popping motion comic adventures breathe new life into the Buffyverse for longtime fans and new “watchers” alike. The Hellmouth may have been destroyed, but the world still needs saving, and Buffy Summers is back at her butt-kicking, demon-slaying best to do the job. She’s relocated her base of operations to a castle in Scotland to lead the Scooby Gang, including hundreds of newly activated Slayers scattered around the world to battle the supernatural forces of evil. But in the wake of Sunnydale’s destruction, the U.S. government thinks Buffy and her legions of followers have grown too powerful and are now terrorist threats. Meanwhile, a seemingly unstoppable group of Japanese vampires hatch a nefarious plot, while the biggest, baddest Big Bad of them all, Twilight, is on a mission to destroy every Slayer on Earth!

The international trailer for Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) Let Me In dropped this week, giving us a glimpse into the film, a remake of the 2008 Swedish film Let The Right One In. The original being as adored as it was, Reeves’ remake has been met with hostility by some fans. (Understandable, considering Hollywood produces so little original material anymore.) That said, the trailer looks gritty and artful, and if the trailer can’t reel you in, Kick-Ass‘ Chloe Moretz just might. As vampire-child Abby, (I wish they would have at least stuck with the name Eli) Moretz is the most promising thing about the film. My desire to see the film is completely shadowed by my desire to see another amazing performance from this little girl. The Road‘s Kodi Smit-McPhee also stars in the film as Owen, the young boy mercilessly tortured by boys from school. Let Me In hits theaters Oct,. 1.

Yesterday, we posted about Tron‘s 25-city wild goose chase via the site FlynnLives.com. Secret locations were revealed throughout the day and the first fans to arrive received a phone (still not sure why) wallets stuffed with Tron goodies and codes. (Read about the experience of Miss Selector, one Tron fan who got the goods in Paris.) When entered into the site, the codes revealed a piece of the puzzle. Flip them over and you’ve got a chuck of a movie poster. (A let down? Yes.) (More on Techland: Tron’s Binary Countdown Begins) Now for the big light at the end of Tron‘s tunnel: Special screening events held in five cities this weekend. Tickets will go on sale (for registered Flynn Lives members only) today for the IMAX theater screenings to be held in New York, Los Angeles, London, Sydney and Toronto. Our bet: They’ll be showing the original Tron and unveil the first trailer in the process. Was it worth all of the lame scavenging? You tell us.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves may have won the top kudos of the night at Spike’s annual video game award show over the weekend, but the televised event also had a lot of buzz surrounding all the new game trailers and announcements. Since we couldn’t make it over to Los Angeles for the geek-filled gala, we decided to give out our own awards… based on the awards show. (More on Techland: Best of the Decade: Video Games) The nominees (trailer debuts): Batman Arkham Asylum 2, Crackdown 2, Green Day Rock Band, Halo Reach, Medal of Honor, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Spec Ops: The Line, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Tron: Evolution, UFC 2010 Undisputed. Here goes… Best Trailer: Halo Reach Halo Reach is one of the most anticipated games of 2010. The trailer for the next title in the Halo franchise showed the first-ever in-game footage, which featured a squad and a “Lone Wolf” lieutenant about to embark on a mission to rescue fellow soldiers. It’s nearly three minutes long… and it’s glorious. Best Trailer… With Reservations: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II The trailer for the first Force Unleashed was awesome. I mean, it had the Sith apprentice taking down a Star Destroyer. But if you played the game, you know how that really went down (yeah). And while this trailer shows the awesomeness of fighting a monster that eats Rancors for breakfast, I have to go with the “wait-and-see” attitude or face heartbreak again. Like when I saw Episode I and III in the theaters. Least Surprising Trailer: Batman Arkham Asylum 2 Oh hey, Joker’s back? And they’re making a sequel to what is known as the best video game based on a comic book character to date? Shocking.
