If you’ve just purchased an Android phone, congratulations. By going Android, you’ve opted for raw functionality over simplicity, for customization over absolute user-friendliness. Android is a powerful platform, but only for those who take full advantage of all its tricks. To help get you started, here’s a guide to tricking out your Android phone, whether you just bought a Samsung Galaxy S 4, HTC One or a budget Android handset from your local prepaid carrier: 1. Get Some Widgets, Organize Your Home Screen Widgets are an easy to way to put information and quick commands front-and-center on your phone. Here’s my most recent list of favorites, and here’s another list for good measure. On most newer phones, you can add widgets by going to the main app launcher, then swiping over to the widgets section. Some phones let you add widgets by holding your finger down on a blank part of the home screen. Once you’ve got a solid collection, try to organize them in a logical way. For example, my main screen has just the weather, favorite apps and a fast way to reach my wife (more on that next). Then I have one screen for quick actions like note-taking, bookmarks and navigation shortcuts, one for news and information and another for phone settings. 2. Give Yourself a Spouse/Significant Other/BFF Button I want to give special attention to Android’s built-in 1-by-1 Contact widget (or the “wife button,” as I call it), which serves as a command center for talking to that special someone in your life. Add it to your home screen, and with two taps you’ll be able to call, send a text message or write an e-mail. (Update: Some HTC phones, such as the HTC One, only include a 4-by-4 Contact widget. But there is another way: Press and hold down on your home screen, and you should see a drop-down list with “Widgets” as the default option. Change this to “Shortcuts,” then select “Person,” and select the contact you want to add.) 3. Set Up Google Play to

In a phone with lots of evolutionary qualities, Siri is the iPhone 4S’s most revolutionary feature. Simply by speaking to this virtual assistant, you can set reminders, send text messages, look up information and schedule meetings. But with a bit of extra effort, Siri can do even more. Here are some tricks and tips for getting the most out of Siri on the iPhone 4S: Post to Twitter, Facebook or Google+ With Siri Although Siri doesn’t offer a built-in way to update your Twitter or Facebook status by voice, Siri does send text messages, so all you have to do is set up your phone to send status updates by text and Siri will cooperate. Of course, text messaging rates may apply depending on your plan. For Facebook, text “Hello” to 32665 in the United States (or the short code for whatever country you’re in), then follow the link in the reply to finish the setup process. Add the short code to your Contacts, and name it “Facebook.” That way, you can tell Siri to “send a text to Facebook saying …” For Twitter, text “START” to 40404 in the United States (or the short code for other countries), then respond with your username, then your password. Add the short code to your Contacts with the name “Twitter.” For Google+, visit your settings page and scroll down to “Set delivery preferences.” Add your cell phone number, but be sure to click “don’t notify me” if you don’t want incoming Google+ messages by text. Verify your number with the code you receive by phone, then add the short code “33669″ (in the U.S.) to your contacts as “Google Plus.” Updates are shared with everyone in your circles. (MORE: Apple Announces iPhone 4S: Old Design, New Specs, Siri Assistant) Use Remember the Milk for Siri Reminders The iPhone 4S includes its own reminders app, but you may prefer Remember the Milk for its advanced features, such as the ability to sync online and share tasks with others. I’ll just copy and paste the instructions directly from

If you find yourself running low on storage space inside Gmail, Lifehacker has a good piece on a service called Find Big Mail. The service basically hooks into your Gmail account and creates three new folders in your inbox: My Big Mail, My Really Big Mail, and My Ultra Big Mail. You can then scour the messages in those folders and delete the ones you don’t need. It’s free to use while in its alpha testing stage, but the site’s servers were overloaded when I tried to use it just now. That’s okay, though, because I’ll show you some other ways to clean out your Gmail account without using a third-party service. Roll up your sleeves, ladies and gents. Search for Attachments E-mail messages with attachments are the number one cause of inbox overload since attachments are often each exponentially larger than the actual message inside which they’re attached. Gmail features several special search filters, one of which we’ll use to display only the messages in our inbox that contain attachments. In Gmail’s search bar, simply type “has:attachment” without the quotes. You will be returned a list not only of messages that actually have files attached to them, but messages that have images embedded inside the body of the messages themselves. The messages with the paper clip icon next to them have actual attachments—no paper clip means embedded images. Now that you have a list of all your large-sized messages, you can go through and delete the ones you don’t need. But that can be a bit cumbersome, especially if you’ve been using Gmail for a long time. In that case, we have some other tricks to try. Search for Older Messages Do you really need that Evite from New Year’s Eve 2002? Or all those dancing baby forwards? If you’re a live-in-the-now type of person, you could probably stand to clear out a bunch of e-mails from the past. Same basic idea as the previous tip. In Gmail’s search bar, we’re going to type “before:2005/01/01″ without the quotes.
