To me, the most tantalizing thing about Aereo — the startup, backed by Barry Diller’s IAC, which let you watch live and time-shifted broadcast TV over the Internet on a TV or iOS device — isn’t the fact that the big TV networks are suing it. Nor is it the company’s technology, which involves pulling in TV signals using arrays of dime-sized microantennae on the roofs of data centers, with each antenna delivering broadcasts across the Net to a particular Aereo subscriber. No, I’m most intrigued by the way Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia keeps predicting that Aereo and services like it will help bring on the demise of the cable bundle, which has so many of us paying well over $100 a month for vast quantities of channels we’ll never, ever watch. To pick a self-referential metaphor, it’s as if you had to subscribe to an entire newsstand’s worth of magazines simply to get TIME delivered to your home. If that business model ever gives way to a more à la carte approach, I’ll be thrilled. Harry McCracken / TIME.com Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia at SXSW Interactive At South by Southwest Interactive in Austin, I checked in with Kanojia to talk about Aereo and the future of TV. I started by asking him when his service, currently available only in parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, might reach my home in the Bay Area so I could try it out for myself; he chuckled and said that he hopes it might happen in the first half of this year — but for now, the company is focusing on the 22 cities it plans to add by the spring, none of which are on the West Coast. So far, according to Kanojia, half of Aereo subscribers are cable subscribers, most often using the service on their second or third TV sets. (You can watch it on TV via a Roku box, or by using an iOS device with AirPlay.) The other half don’t have cable at all — in many

You’ve read many stories by now about Google TV, but none like this. The internet giant is apparently weighing the idea of offering cable TV services directly to customers in Kansas City as an experiment that could radically change the future of the company. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is considering offering video and phone services in addition to a planned high-speed internet service already announced for Kansas City, and has gone so far as to discuss the idea with representatives from Time Warner, Walt Disney Corp. and Discovery Communications, each of which may be a possible partner in the venture should it move forward. (MORE: Google TV May Soon Be Able to Sidestep Blocked Content) This isn’t the first time Google has considered adding a more traditional cable package to its offerings; the WSJ quotes former Google product director Keval Desai as saying that the company has been thinking about such a move for years, in part in preparation for the convergence between television and the web. In addition to the Kansas City location, a similar plan in Palo Alto, CA, was apparently also under consideration. According to the report, the Kansas City project could be up and running by early 2012, although price points and availability are still undecided. Google declined to comment when contacted on the subject. MORE: Google TV to Launch in Europe ‘Early 2012′ Graeme McMillan is a reporter at TIME.
Now you’ll never have to miss an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, wherever you are and whatever device you’re using, as Disney and ABC not only extended their existing deal with Netflix, but also expanded their agreement with Amazon, meaning that Kindle Fire users have even more shows to stream on their new devices. The expansion of the Amazon deal announced this morning means that Amazon Prime members will be able instantly stream content from ABC Studios, Disney Channel, ABC Family and Marvel Entertainment, including all episodes of Lost, early JJ Abrams’ hit Felicity and ABC Family’s cult Greek, as well as previous seasons of current shows like The Secret Life of the American Teenager and, yes, Grey’s Anatomy. (MORE: Nextflix: Who Could Take the Streaming Video Crown?) Amazon’s director of video content acquisition, Brad Beale, said that the company was “excited to add some of the very best content available from Disney-ABC to Prime instant video,” adding that Amazon is “working hard to add even more selection for Kindle Fire customers and Prime members leading up to the holidays, and expect to have nearly 13,000 titles available in Prime instant video by early next year.” At the same time, Disney-ABC has also expanded its deal with Netflix, not only extending it in terms of timing, but also adding new shows to those available for instant streaming, including all episodes of JJ Abrams’ Alias. According to Netflix’ Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, “Disney and ABC have been and continue to be an innovative and supportive partner for Netflix. The diverse but always excellent programming from the different channels and networks are favorites of our members and we are thrilled to broaden the scope and extend the terms or our relationship.” MORE: Cheat Sheet: How Bad Are Things for Netflix?
Google has finally brought apps to Google TV, along with a revamped interface that makes it easier to search for shows and movies. YouTube playback has been updated as well, with HD videos being played by default and automatic playlist creation based on the types of videos you’re watching. Perhaps the biggest news here is the inclusion of third-party apps downloadable from the Android Market. You’ll only see apps specifically created for Google TV—Google says that 50 developers will have new apps ready at launch—but Rishi Chandra, director of product management for Google TV told me, “It’s actually not that much work to take an existing app and bring it to TV. A lot of it is enabling D-pad functionality” for apps that normally respond to touch input. And then there’s the elephant in the room: certain big TV networks’ and websites’ insistence on blocking streaming video from being played on Google TV. This update in and of itself doesn’t bring about any new deals with the likes of CBS and Hulu, but the inclusion of apps may make that a moot point anyway. I asked Chandra what would stop a developer from making a Google TV web browser that would present itself as a normal web browser, effectively enabling the playback of content that’s normally blocked. My question: “If I’m a developer, can I create a web browser—since the browser’s based on Chrome anyway—that spoofs itself as a normal desktop Chrome browser, or is that something that you guys would have to weed out of the Android Market?” Chandra’s response: “The Android Market’s an open market so unless you’re breaking the terms of service, we don’t weed you out. So I think there will be a whole bunch of innovation from developers. For me, the more interesting innovation will be content that you don’t get on TV and the new experiences. You may find developers doing exactly what you’re suggesting but my feeling is that if it’s not hitting the real user problem, which is, in my mind, how

Well, that’s certainly one way to complain about news coverage. Hackers claiming to represent Anonymous have announced plans to take down Fox News’ website on November 5 in protest over the network’s coverage of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. Calling the Fox coverage “continued right-wing, conservative propaganda against the occupations,” the hackers explained in a new video that “since [Fox] will not stop belittling the occupiers, we will simply shut them down.” Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and former Fox News personality Glenn Beck are named as “primary targets” for the attack, according to a caption. (MORE: ‘Anonymous’ Forces 40+ Child Pornography Sites Offline) The attack is planned for November 5th, the same day as a previously announced (and potentially fake) Facebook takedown is scheduled to occur. More importantly, it’s also Guy Fawkes’ Day in the U.K., in honor of the terrorist who tried to blow up parliament in the 17th century, and whose likeness has been adopted via the comic and movie V For Vendetta, by Anonymous and its supporters in public appearances. Fox News has not officially responded to the threat but, let’s face it, it’s only a matter of time before the issue is raised on air.
It looks like all of those people scooping up new iPhones and Androids are embracing video in a big way—a new Nielsen poll reports that 36% more mobile subscribers watched video on their phones this year than last year. Also popular: watching TV without commercials, which would explain the 31% jump in DVR usage over the last two years. Not even growing services like Hulu and Netflix can compare with the mighty DVR: Americans spent four times as much time watching recorded shows on their DVRs than they did watching videos online. Overall, Americans are watching 2 hours and 43 minutes more television every month, which is good because it’s not like this country has an obesity problem or anything. (PHOTOS: A Brief History of Sex on TV) What does this all mean? That, despite the fact that almost half of Americans say they watch video online, the big television networks shouldn’t freak out; just because people are watching video content on their phones and computers doesn’t mean they’re not tuning in to the ol’ boob tube to catch episodes of Dancing With The Stars. Here’s how the info breaks down by region. Most of those people watching video on their phones? They’re in Los Angeles, presumably killing time while sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Dallas residents are the biggest fans of DVR, while those in California, Oregon and Washington spent the most time watching streaming video on their computers. For those looking to kick it old school, Minneapolis is the place to be. The city boasts the highest percentage of people watching only broadcast television.
Good news, Neil deGrasse Tyson fans: Your favorite astrophysicist and company will soon be coming to Amazon. The company announced today that it has struck a deal with PBS Distribution to bring more than 1,000 episodes of PBS shows such as NOVA, Antique Roadshow and Frontline to its Amazon Prime service. Yes, you’ll also get the chance to learn/be lulled to sleep by Ken Burns’ many documentaries, including his excellent new one on Prohibition. PBS fans will get to go retro with 200 episodes of Julia Child’s The French Chef. (PHOTOS: Ken Burns, American Filmmaker) This shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody who’s been watching the migration of programming from television to the Internet, including Hulu and Netflix’s battle to produce the long-awaited new season of Arrested Development and YouTube’s rumored move to commit $150 million to 25 channels of original content. Amazon’s recent move will put its Prime instant video offerings at 12,000, which, while no threat to Netflix, is formidable considering subscribers also get perks like no minimum for free shipping on Amazon purchases. It also promises to entice more customers towards its recently released Kindle Fire, the $199 Android tablet that serves as Amazon’s conduit for pushing books, magazines, movies and TV shows a la Apple’s strategy with the iPad. Non-Prime subscribers can still watch shows online by paying per episode on Amazon’s Instant Video service. While the PBS deal may lure the coveted totebag demographic, it’s hard to say how many people will cough up $79 a year for Amazon Prime. It’s certainly cheaper than Netflix’s stream-only plan, which rings in at $17 more per year, but the quality of its offerings is considerably less enticing (Amazon Prime’s most popular movie right now? Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious.) Never, however, underestimate the cosmic powers of Neil deGrasse Tyson.
