Before you bash your friends who go online to flirt with their crushes or those who send love notes to their significant other via social networking, a new study from Euro RSCG Wordwide is showing that online communication can actually help your relationship. “We used to meet in bars, and restaurants, we now meet on Facebook and Twitter,” Havas Worldwide and Euro RSCG Worldwide global CEO David Jones said in the press release. ”Social media hasn’t replaced but has enhanced real world relationships making them faster, more transparent and more authentic.” The survey asked 1000 people in the U.S. about their romantic interactions online. Surprisingly, though most people said that matchmaking sites like OkCupid and Match.com can help, they found that basic social networking sites like Facebook are the easiest places to make a connection, especially with the younger people surveyed. Ladies, if you’re confused why that guy seems much nicer online and shy in real life it’s because 39 percent of men say they flirt online compared to only 23 percent of women admitting to the digital deed. One third of Americans believe that online only relationships can work out and about the same amount believe that online relationships are less pressure. However, more women require face-to-face time, instead of just social media interactions, for a couple to stay together. The downside: About half of the respondents believe that the Internet has made it easier to cheat, with one third saying they know at least one person whose relationship ended because of something their acquaintance or that person’s significant other did online. The majority of the responders agree that having a sexual relationship even if it’s just online still counts as cheating. We’re not going so far to say that Facebook stalking is just like speed dating or tweeting @ someone with a coy message is equal to approaching a random person at the bar, but it’s nice to know especially on Valentine’s Day that there’s more people finding happiness thanks to technology. For those of you who are

Plenty of us spend hours using our laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and other gadgets. They come with us everywhere, and when they malfunction or break, it’s often hard to go on without replacing them immediately. But can you actually be in love with a possession? Researchers at Arizona State University say it’s possible. It’s normal for people to become attached to objects that they believe convey their sense of self. But after conducting interviews with car owners, gun owners and computer owners, the researchers described a phenomenon they dubbed “material possession love,” in which a person “becomes emotionally attached to possessions as real substitutes in what resembles a human relationship.” The researchers found that those who exhibited this kind of love for their material possessions spent significantly more time and money nurturing and lavishing them with add-ons and extra services. In fact, they found that gun owners on average spent six times more money on their weapons than on others, while computer owners spent about twice as much on their gadgets as they did on others. But the study did more than just equate love with the amount of money spent on a person or thing. Extensive interviews with participants at a car show revealed that many of them treated their cars like people and fashioned real, emotional relationships with them. For example, one car show participant named his car “Maybelline” and said he spends more time with the car than with people. Another participant knew everything about his beloved car–he knew by heart her date and place of manufacturing, vehicle identification number and a timeline of all her previous owners. Another car owner described the day he bought it in “love-at-first-sight terms”– he spent all the money he had on the car and even asked to borrow money from his dad. But what makes the study so interesting is that this kind of possession love spanned a variety of interests. “We went into this just looking at automobiles, but found it was a generalizable phenomenon,” said John Lastovicka, the

Naming the best videogame romances has been done has been done to death, so we decided to put on our matchmaking hats and focus on the best cross-title hookups that haven’t happened yet (and barring any imaginative fanfic, never will). 1) Master Chief (Halo) & Samus (Metroid) This couple would need to ditch their armor to consummate the relationship, but their respective hi-tech suits are so sophisticated, maybe they wouldn’t. 2) Princess Peach (Super Mario Bros.) & Dr. Robotnik (Sonic the Hedgehog) Sorry Mario: it’s clear that Princess Peach has a bad boy complex (why else would she allow herself to be “kidnapped” by Bowser all the time?) so something tells us she’d really hit it off another game mascot’s arch nemesis. (More on Techland: Sci-Fi Sexy Time: The All-Time Hottest Hookups) 3) Nathan Drake (Uncharted) & Jade (Beyond Good & Evil) Although Nathan and Lara Croft seem like a perfect match, a better fit for Uncharted’s hero would be the BG&E’s photojournalist/heroine since he had such great chemistry with TV reporter Elena in his own game. 4) Kratos (God of War) & Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) As seen in God of War II, Kratos can get a bit kinky. We’re not sure if Lara is that adventurous, but she would find it hard to resist Kratos’ roots in Greek mythology. (More on Techland: Love At First Byte: Your Nerdy Valentine’s Day Guide) 5) Yuna (Final Fantasy X) & Niko Bellic (Grand Theft Auto IV) Yuna sees the good in everyone: a quality that will help get past Niko’s temperamental nature and see his softer side.

Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 Today in Techland: Valentine’s Day sucks, but if you must, here are some things to do that won’t. Peter gave Bio Shock 2 an 8/10 in his review and found himself needing a night light. Steve delivered his diagnosis of the terminally ill Spider-Man franchise if Peter Parker turns into just another pretty face, and Hey! Lev’s back! Here’s what else going on in nerd news around the Web: Who ya gonna call? More on Ghostbusters 3: MTV confirms that Bill Murray WILL return as a ghost in the third film. Says the ‘buster: “I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel,’” he said. “So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.” Excited? Oh, I can’t wait to hear this. Google announced that it’s working on voice-activated translating software for mobile devices. The company is hoping roll out the tech sometime in the next few years, and says that it’s shooting for 6,000-some language reference base. Though I’m sure it will be such a step forward, I can’t wait to hear the ridiculous things it generates. Think the misnomers of online translators, but vocal. Who? Sci-fi scribe Neil Gaiman (Stardust, Coraline) will pen an episode of the British show Doctor Who in 2011, he tells SFX Magazine. Too bad we’ll have to wait 14 months… Wait, what? On Amazon, it costs more to buy the digital download of O.A.R.’s latest album then it does to purchase a physical copy. Does anyone listen to O.A.R. anymore aside from aging frat boys?
Valentine’s Day is stupid. It’s for saps who find value in the fact that they can brag to friends/co-workers/the Facebook universe all about the stupid hoops they forced their significant other to jump through just to prove their love is true, Hallmark style. Barf. (More on Techland: The All-Time Hottest Sci-Fi Romances) Still, I’ll never cross a holiday off as a total loss, except maybe Columbus Day, so if you’re bound to the stupid Cupid festivities, maybe we can help make it a bit more bearable. So look your nerdy sweetie in the eyes, tell them, “You had me at Halo” and embrace the silliness. Besides, any excuse for chocolate is okay by me. Talk Nerdy To Me: The Top Five Sci-Fi Date Movies 1. Goonies Not every sci-fi enthusiast will submit themselves to a film unworthy of Sundance, geeky or not. If you must meld the two, Eternal Sunshine is as poetic as it is quirky and romantic. Jim Carey and Kate Winslet produce beautiful performances and the film just oozes with the meaning of love, once the complexities are stripped away.
