Enjoy your right to buy and sell used video games now, because Microsoft’s next Xbox may not allow it, according to yet another report. Edge, a well-respected gaming magazine and website, cites “sources with first-hand experience” of Microsoft’s next console, who say game discs will only work for the original purchaser. Microsoft may require users to enter an activation code, the sources say, which would presumably tie the game to a single user or system. The next Xbox may also have a persistent online connection. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that Microsoft might nix used games in its next Xbox. A year ago, Kotaku wrote that the console would have some sort of anti-used game system, citing “one reliable industry source.” VG247 floated the idea of an always-on Internet requirement last April. Microsoft may not even be the only one planning such a system. Last March, Kotaku reported that Sony’s next PlayStation would have a way to cut off the used game business. People who tried to play a previously-owned game, sources said, would be limited in what they could do with the game. Sony has already applied for a patent on a type of RF tagging that would match a game disc with a single console. At this point, I’ve seen enough reports to believe that something is happening beyond the “Online Pass” concept of existing consoles. Publishers have griped about the used game business for a long time; it looks like they’ll finally get some more tools to shut it down. How exactly it’ll work remains unclear, but here are a few hypothetical issues that come to mind: If the used game trade goes away, a fairly-priced digital market must replace it. No one complains about how you can’t buy or sell used games on a PC, an Android phone or an iPad. That’s because people are still getting good deals. Sale prices or even giveaways are common for older games on phones and tablets, and prices are much lower in general. On PC distribution services

While perusing the Windows Store for new tablet apps last night, I came across a surprising find: Microsoft had recently let in a Super Nintendo emulator, dubbed Snes8x, for Windows 8 and Windows RT devices. The free app lets you play the classics from Nintendo’s 16-bit game console, such as Super Mario World and Street Fighter II, though you have to supply the games yourself in the form of SNES ROM files. Snes8x has touch screen controls, and it also supports keyboard input. It’s not the only classic game emulator in the Windows Store, either. After searching some more, I also found EMU7800, an emulator for the Atari 7800 ProSystem, which itself was backwards compatible with the Atari 2600. EMU7800 is free as well, and though you can supply your own ROMs, it also includes a built-in selection of games, such as Ballblazer and Joust. Of course, emulators aren’t a new thing. If you have a Windows PC, you can get emulators for consoles dating as far back as the Magnavox Odyssey. Snes8x and EMU7800 are noteworthy because they’ve landed inside the Windows Store, Microsoft’s new semi-walled garden for apps. If you have a Windows RT device like Microsoft’s Surface, you can only install new software through this Store, and even on a Windows 8 machine, it’s the only place to get modern-style apps that offer new features like fast app switching and Snap view. I wasn’t sure whether emulators would be welcome. Jared Newman / TIME.com Emulators lie in legally murky territory. While a U.S. appeals court has held up emulation as fair use, it’s still illegal to download bootleg copies of the actual game files, known as ROMs. Nonetheless, there are dozens of websites that distribute both emulators and ROMs for classic consoles, and the games industry generally leaves them alone. Occasionally, some sites will remove their copies of popular games, such as Donkey Kong or Pac-Man, in response to copyright complaints, but for the most part, the same sites have been up and running for years. With the rise of

Just so we’re all on the same page, I’m part of the cult that really liked Far Cry 2. So while I’d like to review Far Cry 3 as a separate entity, the reality is that I can’t separate my feelings about these two very different games. Far Cry 2 was like cinéma vérité in video game form. Guns broke down over time. Fast travel was not an option, so traversing the African landscape meant battling through roadside checkpoints or sneaking around them in the tall brush. Just to keep players even further on edge, the game stretched save points apart by dangerous distances, and threw in an occasional bout of malaria. By most video game standards, these were inconveniences. But what emerged was a feeling of being in a dog-eat-dog world, where everyone was implicated in the moral quagmire–even the player, as game critic Iroquois Pliskin once noted. Far Cry 2 felt real, but it was not always entertaining, so it polarized critics. No wonder its sequel takes a much different path. Far Cry 3 is a virtual playground for hunting, climbing, shooting, stabbing and looting. In contrast to its predecessor, the nuisances of realism do not apply in Far Cry 3. All that matters is whether you have fun. And chances are, you will. The game puts players behind the eyes of Jason Brody, an initially wimpy and spoiled twentysomething whose island vacation is ruined by slave-selling bandits, who take Brody and his crew for ransom. A hair-raising escape sets the stage for Brody’s re-awakening as a sort of island warrior, who becomes one with the jungle and at ease with spilling bandit blood. The plot is not very good, but let’s set that aside for a minute. The main attractions in Far Cry 3 are its gorgeous island setting and its clever approach to combat. Seeing as this is the jungle, the game encourages players to skulk around in the bushes, marking their prey and silently taking out enemies one-by-one. If you can get close enough to

Not long ago, serious gamers were practically obligated to turn their noses up at smartphones and tablets. These simple devices, with their touchscreen controls and endless Angry Birds spin-offs, were an affront to the weightier endeavor of shooting aliens and zombies in the face–or so the thinking went. That’s not really true any more. Sophisticated mobile processors have enabled exactly the kind of games that once seemed only fit for dedicated gaming handhelds, including quick-reflex platformers, third-person adventures and first-person shooters. Because many of these games don’t feel right without real thumbsticks and buttons, a handful of peripheral makers have stepped up with their own Bluetooth game controllers, effectively turning smartphones and tablets into portable video game systems. I’ve been spending some quality gaming time with four of these phone and tablet game controllers: PowerA’s Moga Mobile Gaming System, SteelSeries’ Free and Nyko’s PlayPad and PlayPad Pro. They’re all aimed primarily at users of Android devices, but all except the Moga have a limited amount of iPhone and iPad support, and can work with Macs or Windows PCs as well. Here’s what I thought of each one: Jared Newman / TIME.com Moga Mobile Gaming System ($50) PowerA’s Moga has a built-in stand that grips your smartphone in place, adding more of a portable gaming device vibe than the other controllers on this list. It connects via Bluetooth to devices running Android 2.3 or higher, and it has its own app that guides you through the setup process and directs you to supported games. Android tablets are supported as well, but you can’t attach them directly to the controller. The good: The setup process is easy, and the grip is a clever way to combine the phone and controller into a single unit. The bad: The controller can block access to your phone’s volume controls. The dual sliding analog nubs, while comfortable to grip, aren’t as accurate as proper thumbsticks, and the left nub doesn’t support full 360-degree motion in some games. Also, there’s no D-Pad, and the device relies on
