A brisk walk around the show floor at CES last week was all it took to confirm that the 3D TV craze is over. Vendors such as Samsung and Sony no longer thrust 3D glasses in everyone’s faces; most of their television sets weren’t showing 3D video at all. Instead, TV makers fixated on 4K displays, and how wonderful they looked without the assistance of eyewear. In fairness, 3D TV hasn’t gone away. As Sony Electronics President Phil Molyneux told my colleague Harry McCracken, it’s simply become a default feature embedded in all of the company’s new televisions. (The other way to look at it, of course, is that consumers are getting 3D TV whether they want it or not.) Now that 3D is a standard feature, TV makers are turning their attention to 4K as the next big thing. I wondered, then, what that meant for glasses-free 3D. At one point it seemed like the next natural step for televisions, but that was while 3D was still in vogue. Does the bursting of the 3D TV hype bubble spell doom for a glasses-free version? Not quite. I did see a couple of glasses-free 3D technologies at CES this year, and they both looked better than anything I’d seen before. Even so, they’re a long way off from becoming actual products that the average person can afford. The most impressive effort was a 55-inch, 4K glasses-free 3D TV prototype from Vizio, developed with Dolby and other undisclosed partners. Unlike other glasses-free panels I’ve seen in previous years (like the Toshiba model pictured above), Vizio’s set was comfortable to look at from anywhere, not just from a few specific angles. The TV did have several 3D sweet spots, and apparently the best place to watch was from about five to six feet away, but the effect simply became less pronounced or non-existent at other angles. The video itself remained crisp enough to watch. Although the 3D effect was somewhat mild in my demo, Vizio said users would be able to adjust the

Apparently Vizio didn’t get the memo that Android tablets aren’t worth making anymore. It’s planning to release two of them — one with a 10.1-inch display, the other with a 7-inch display. Vizio’s 10.1-inch Android tablet is one of the first devices we’ve seen with an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, with the extra graphics oomph helping to power a 2560-by-1600 resolution display. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see what else Tegra 4 can do; Vizio’s prototype was short on software to check out, and the software hadn’t been optimized at all yet, so it was a bit choppy in its pre-launch state. Jared Newman / TIME.com Other specs for Vizio’s 10.1-inch tablet include 32 GB of storage with a MicroSD slot for added capacity, a 5-megapixel camera in back, a 1.3-megapixel camera up front, Micro-USB and Micro-HDMI output. Although the tablet on display was clad in plastic, with sharp edges reminiscent of its thin-and-light PCs, Vizio is debating whether to use aluminum instead. The 7-inch tablet is like a slimmer, lighter Nexus 7, with sharper edges. Its specs are nearly identical to Google‘s own Android tablet, with a 1280-by-800 resolution display, Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 16 GB of storage and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. Although Vizio hasn’t announced a final weight and thickness for its 7-inch tablet, as a Nexus 7 user I can say that Vizio’s tablet felt noticeably airier. (MORE: What’s in the Bag, Wuss? Gearing Up for the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show) Both tablets run an unmodified version of Android 4.1. Eagle-eyed Android fans may notice, however, that the tablets use an older style of Android tablet interface, without the app dock found in Google’s Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Vizio Chief Technical Officer Matt McRae told me the company is still deciding whether to switch to the newer interface style. Of course, the main problem for Vizio is the same one that’s scared off other companies, who’ve basically stopped releasing high-end tablets based on Google’s operating system: It’s not clear why you’d buy an Android tablet —

The cheapening of Android tablets continues, as Vizio’s 8-inch slate is expected to launch for $350 next month, according to Engadget. Aside from its price, which is less than most high-end Android tablets on the market, the simply-named “Vizio Tablet” includes one notable trick: It uses a built-in infrared controller to communicate with televisions, DVD players and other home entertainment devices from many manufacturers, not just Vizio. Some companies sell infrared dongles for this purpose, but this is the first time I’ve seen the capability built into a tablet. (MORE: Infrared: Just Kill It, Already!) Vizio’s riffing on the basic Android experience with a custom user interface, meant to resemble the look and feel of the company’s “VIA” connected TV platform. Underneath the UI is an unspecified version of Android, able to run the full range of Android Market apps. For now, Vizio isn’t saying which Android version the tablet will run at launch, but hopes to upgrade the software to Honeycomb once it’s deemed sufficiently stable. The tablet hardware is somewhat unique, with an 8-inch screen at 1024-by-768 resolution — same as an iPad — whereas most other Android tablets to date have used a widescreen format. There’s also a 1 GHz processor, 2 GB of built-in storage, a MicroSD slot, a front-facing camera for video chat and HDMI out for mirroring on big screens. Three speakers provide stereo audio in either portrait or landscape orientations. NBA star Blake Griffin is endorsing the Vizio Tablet before launch, appearing in a YouTube video that shows off his all-Vizio home entertainment center. It’s not the best demo — the tablet software seems laggy at times — which makes me wonder whether Vizio should’ve just saved the endorsement money and made the tablet even cheaper. Or at least they could’ve paid him to involve the tablet in some sort of elaborate dunk.
Hulu Plus is continuing its slow journey towards being available everywhere, with the announcement that the paid streaming television on demand service is now available on Vizio Internet-connected HDTVs, and will soon be available on Vizio Blu-Ray players and select Android phones. Hulu CEO Jason Kilar announced the partnerships at CES yesterday, giving audiences a sneak peek at the Android app while remaining mum on the issue of a release date (Hulu promises more information “as soon as we have an official launch date and complete list of Hulu Plus-enabled Android phones”; all that’s known currently is that phones must be running Android OS 2.2, and the subscription cost is expected to be $7.99 a month). Hulu Plus is currently already available for iOS mobile devices, as well as Sony PS3s, Bravia TVs and Blu-Ray players, and TiVo Premiere and Roku boxes. Microsoft has also announced plans to add the service to Xbox Live and Kinect this Spring.
Vizio wants to be the ultimate home entertainment package, and they’re counting on OnLive, the cloud-based gaming system, to help them reach that status. At CES in Las Vegas today, the companies announced that the OnLive Game service will be included on new Vizio HDTVs, the new VIA Tablet and VIA Phone and Blu-ray players. People who opt to buy one of the mentioned Vizio products will not need to buy an additional OnLive gaming console, which means the company has integrated viewing, the internet and the gaming experience into one product. The OnLive service will also be a part of the upcoming Vizio internet apps, helping the player share stats and information by keeping them always connected. “Today’s OnLive/VIZIO announcement marks a major milestone: for the first time in the history of video games, consumers will be able to enjoy premium video games directly on a TV, no console or computer needed,” Founder and CEO of OnLive Steve Perlman said in the press release. ”VIZIO’s innovative and cutting-edge technologies are ideally aligned to complement OnLive’s vision for the future of entertainment and together we look forward to providing a wealth of rich-media, interactive content to consumers this year.” Customers will be able to access games at any time on any of the devices. Rentals range from $2.99 to $49.99 which are digitally streamed to your device, with a recent $9.99 a month all-you-can-play plan announced. Consoles normally cost $99 (not including an optional $29.99 video adapter), but are discounted 33 percent to $66 right now because of CES.
First come the fancy 3D TVs, then the fancy 3D eye ware. From CES: VIZIO unveiled its new line of XVT HD3D TVs: Three sets – a 72-in. for $3,499, a 55-in. for $2,499 and a 47-in. for $1,999 – that will ship in August and couple with Bluetooth-equipped active shutter 3D glasses from XpanD (along with 3D tech company SENSIO). In fact, you’ll have to buy the XpanD glasses to watch a 3D-ready VIZIO screen. (Competitors in the 3D specs market (like RealD) have teamed up with JVC, Samsung and Sony.) And, with rumors swirling that prices could be anywhere from $50 to $100 a pop, your average family movie night is sounding pretty pricey. (More on Techland: “Monsters Vs. Aliens” Becomes First 3D Blu-ray The glasses will communicate with the VIZIO TVs via Bluetooth (the first to do so) to activate the lenses that will then sync up to the image on the screen. If active shutter glasses were not synced with the TV, you would run the risk of seeing the wrong frame at the wrong instant, which would make for one weird picture.
