Web designers around the world, it’s time to celebrate: Last month, Internet Explorer’s share of global browser usage fell below 50% for the first time in more than a decade. Your long nightmare of having to make things work for people who still use IE6 is a little bit closer to coming to an end. Microsoft’s iconic browser can still claim desktop browser victory, with 52.63% of desktop users still using IE, but as desktop internet usage competes with mobile devices, the browser landscape is beginning to shift more quickly. In terms of all internet browsing, IE has fallen to 49.58%, its lowest share since 1999 and a significant drop from its 2004 high of 95%. (MORE: That ‘Internet Explorer Users Are Dumber’ Study? Bogus) The fall seems to be a result of Google’s Chrome browser, which rose to 17.62% of desktop browser share, with Firefox staying static at 22.51% and Apple’s Safari barely shifting towards 5.43%. Safari fares much better in mobile devices, leading the pack as it trends toward 65% share in mobile. Admittedly, a 49.58% share still makes IE the world’s dominant browser by any measure, but with IE adoption falling on a month-to-month basis, it’s safe to say that—barring any worldwide technological disaster that destroys technology created in the last six years—the internet is slowly becoming a safer place for those who still remember how horrible IE6 was.
Google has ever-so slightly updated its “Chrome” web browser to include the option to view a list of your installed apps or your most visited sites when opening a new tab, along with a redesigned Chrome Web Store that brings a handful of new apps and extensions. There are a slew of fixes going on under the hood as well, if you’re so inclined. To update your browser, click the little wrench icon in the upper right corner, choose “About Google Chrome” and it’ll install the update if you don’t already have it. If it says “Google Chrome is up to date,” then this is a good minute or two of your life that you’re unfortunately never going to get back. If that’s the case, feel free to leave work early. I’ll smooth it over with the suits.
In the future, Mozilla’s Firefox browser might look a bit more like Google Chrome. That’s my main takeaway from a series of early mockups for future versions of Firefox. Designer Stephen Horlander shared the renderings on Mozilla’s website (via TechCrunch), with the disclaimer that they were created “for discussion purposes” and that some renderings may already be out of date. But if this is the way Firefox is going, it’s hard to ignore the resemblance to Google’s browser. In many of the renderings, active tabs take on a curved shape, options have been relocated to the right side of the screen, and search and address bars have been merged into a single text field. (Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 uses a Chrome-like omnibar, making Firefox the last of the three biggest browsers to resist.) (MORE: Mozilla Admits Building ‘Boot to Gecko’ iOS, Android Competitor) That’s not to say everything in these renderings are Chrome rip-offs. Mozilla is seen experimenting with a customizable “functionality” menu that uses big, bubbly icons to list popular commands such as “new window” and copy/paste along with apps and extensions. Inactive tabs blend into the background so it’s easier to tell which tab is currently open. And some of the mockups look more like Internet Explorer 9, with the URL bar and tabs squished onto a single line. Over the last year or so, Mozilla has lost market share while Chrome has gained. While Firefox still has nearly double Chrome’s share worldwide, web metric firm Statcounter reported yesterday that Chrome has overtaken Firefox in the United Kingdom. As such, we’ve seen Mozilla take some drastic steps to spruce its browser, including a major redesign for Firefox 4 and a new development cycle that should result in faster implementation of new features. If the changes pictured here ever materialize, I’ll be interested to see how other browsers react and tweak their own interfaces.
Opera’s littlest web browser, Opera Mini, just got a big update for iOS, with optimization for the iPad. This free browser underdog provides a great experience on Apple’s tablet, but it has too many frustrations to fully replace the iPad’s default Safari browser. There’s a lot to like about Opera Mini on the iPad. The browser’s signature “speed dial” — a customizable grid of your favorite websites — looks quite inviting on the big screen, and tabs are handled through a drop-down box, which is faster to use than the clunky tab window in iPad Safari. Webpages scroll and zoom with ease, and using the forward and back buttons creates a slick-looking swipe effect across the screen. There’s also a share button for quick linking on Facebook and Twitter. The hallmark feature of Opera Mini is server-side compression, which squishes web pages by about 90 percent. This cuts down on data use and loads pages faster when there’s not a lot of bandwidth to go around. In other words, it’s a handy browser when you’ve got a slow internet connection. But on the iPad, Opera Mini’s zeal for speed is also its greatest weakness. In addition to compressing pages, Opera Mini loads the mobile versions of websites when available. As a result, you get feature-limited versions of Google Search, Gmail, Bing and countless other sites that are optimized for weak feature phones. That may fly on an iPhone, but on the iPad, it just looks silly. I’ve got other nitpicks as well: Speed Dial is limited to nine slots when the iPad’s large screen should afford more; there are no suggested searches, like the kind offered on Safari and other alternative iPad browsers; and there’s no print utility, if you’re into that sort of thing. But basically, I’m pining for an iPad version of Opera Mobile, the big brother to Opera Mini that’s already available on Android phones and tablets. This may not be possible, because Opera Mobile renders webpages in ways that Apple does not allow for third-party developers,

Just settling in with Firefox 4? Don’t get too comfortable, because Firefox 5 is expected to arrive on June 21. Mozilla, which creates the Firefox browser, has moved to an 18-week development cycle, promising new versions of Firefox at a rapid pace. But Firefox 5 will actually be developed on a shortened 13-week cycle, putting it on track for late June, PC Mag reports. Firefox 5 won’t be a drastic redesign like the minimalist Firefox 4. Instead, you’ll see a handful of key features on top of the existing interface. The next Firefox could include tabs with drop-down shortcut menus (kind of like Jumplists in Internet Explorer 9), IE9-style desktop apps, social sharing features, multiple account sign-ins and the ability to select several tabs at once. Firefox 5 features aren’t set in stone, however, and under Mozilla’s new approach, features that aren’t ready to roll will simply be pushed back to the next version. This will allow Mozilla to release new versions without delay, giving users faster access to the features that work. The approach is similar to that of Google Chrome, which is in its 10th stable version after two and a half years. Of course, the faster development cycle means that future versions will be available in short order as well. Firefox 5, 6 and 7 should all be available by the end of the year. To get a sense of the changes Mozilla wants to make, check out this list of user interface priorities on the Mozilla wiki.

Firefox 4 may have just dropped, but Firefox 5 is already on its way. According to ConceivablyTech, Firefox 5 may be here in a matter of weeks with a whole gamut of new features. So much for that long anticipated launch last month. Mozilla’s development crew is said to be considering to add nine features to the next version. Reports abound that even if some of these changes don’t become implemented in the next browser iteration, they could very well come later. Said to be specific to Firefox 5, it will become easier to share items online. Webpages will be able to be shared directly from the browser bar. The feature, which looks like a little paper plane, is assumed to support Facebook, Twitter and maybe similar social aggregators like Digg and Reddit. The next version will also reportedly let each tab be fully customized as a menu, letting you explore the sections you most often visit. Firefox 5 is also said to better identity management, allowing you to sign in from multiple accounts. Among some of the other considered changes include a tab multi-select option, which will let users select more than one tab. This feature enables web surfers to close or move several tabs at once. In addition to adding a file upload indicator, add-ons could also get standardized toolbar support. The blog’s sources also say Mozilla is experimenting with getting rid of the “Home” button, without sacrificing functionality. The developers might be taking a hint from Google Chrome as well by adding an integrated PDF viewer: it’s not sure if this will expand to other file formats as well. Mozilla is attempting to stick closely to a release schedule that could have users seeing new versions of the browser every 16 to 18 weeks. The second stage of development of Firefox 5 is slated to start later this month.
The final version of Mozilla’s Firefox browser is en route to the Android Market on Tuesday morning, but for now it’s giving the cold shoulder to Adobe Flash. Mozilla confirmed to Computerworld that Flash won’t be part of mobile Firefox, at least for now. “For us, HTML5 and the open Web video standards are most important right now,” Thomas Arend, Mozilla’s principal product manager, said. “Flash is a reality, though — I’m aware that it’s there and it’s going to be around for a while — so we’re definitely looking into it and will look into enabling Flash plugins in a future version.” If you’re impatient for the final release, you can try mobile Firefox’s release candidate right now. Some bugs may be fixed in the final version, but all the big features are intact. The browser aims to make tabbed browsing easy with a menu of open tabs that slides out from the side of the screen when you swipe to the right. It also syncs with the desktop version of Firefox, so you can transfer tabs, bookmarks and passwords between devices. And just like the desktop browser, mobile Firefox has a library of add-ons. I like most of those concepts, but when I tried mobile Firefox a several months ago, I was turned off by the swipe-based menus for tabs and bookmarks. Some user reviews in the Android Market also complain of sluggishness, but I haven’t had a chance to try the latest version for myself. Fortunately, mobile Firefox is free, so you can check it out without worry. Just be sure to keep the stock Android browser handy for any Flash content that pops up.

This article has been cross-posted from our partner site, Technologizer. There’s misguided analysis out there this week (see here, here, and to some extent here for examples) on how supposedly Firefox is dead or in trouble. Better stop the presses: it sure isn’t happening yet. In the first 24 hours following the browser’s official release, consumers have downloaded it more than 4.7 million times, double the rate for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 debut last week. Downloads continue at a fairly torrid pace — you can follow here. Firefox 4′s success is evidence of the fact that consumers are still looking past Microsoft when it comes to browsers. According to NetApplications, Internet Explorer’s market share is now down to 57 percent. IE has been on a consistent decline for the past several years, and the upstart success of Chrome (which now has 11 percent of the market), and Firefox (at about 22 percent), show that consumers are ready for life post-Microsoft. IE9 won’t turn Microsoft’s fortunes around in browsers, and neither Microsoft’s woes nor Mozilla’s alleged certain death have anything to do with Web app support (reading the Firefox roadmap answers that critique, which I covered here, and check out Jared’s story on the Mozilla Web Apps platform). The challenge is called tablets. While some of us in the tech blogosphere have poked a little fun at Steve Jobs’ “post-PC” comments, he’s on to something. With tablets now a legitimate force, it is only a matter of time before these devices begin to affect market share. How else do you think Safari has been able to grow its market share so quickly? I highly doubt that many are downloading Safari for Windows, frankly. These devices will help either Chrome (for Android devices) or Safari (for iOS). As people increase their web use through tablets, it will come at the further expense of Internet Explorer and even Firefox too. Microsoft has no real plans in tablets for at least another year, and that’s going to hurt.
My TIME.com column this week is about the golden age of Web browsers we’re currently living in–and especially the release this week of Internet Explorer 9. The browser, which debuted on Monday at the South by Southwest Interactive geekfest in Austin, is the best new Microsoft browser in eons. It’s on a par with other major browsers in most respects that matter and ahead of them in some, and has plenty of stuff to appeal to serious browser fans. (One notable exception: It’s not as ambitious a platform for third-party add-ins as Firefox, Chrome, or Safari.) I’m still not sure, though, whether serious browser fans–the sort who defected from IE years ago for Firefox, and who may have moved on to Chrome more recently–have any interest in coming back to IE. For one thing, they may be content with the browser they’ve got. For another, I get the sense that the reputation of the Internet Explorer name has been so poor for so long that some folks who might like the new version if they tried it are instinctively resistant to the notion. If former IE users give the new version a fair shake, the long slide in Microsoft’s share of the browser market might reverse itself. If they don’t, IE could continue being what it’s been for years–the most popular browser choice among people who don’t care enough about browsers to choose one. I make no predictions, but it’s going to be fun to watch what happens. Back in 2008, Microsoft ran a strange experiment in which it showed the much-maligned Windows Vista to clueless PC users–but told them that it was a secret upcoming version of Windows known as “Mojave.” They loved it. I wonder how savvy browser users would respond to Internet Explorer 9 if they didn’t know it was IE–or that it was from Microsoft, period?

After numerous stories of our trusted sites sharing our precious, precious information with third parties, web security has become a major concern for most users. Yes, you can opt out of everything, but does that really keep you safe? In response to user’s concerns, Google Chrome 10, Mozilla Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9 recently updated their security features. Herewith, a list of the new additions: Google Chrome 10 Congrats to Google Chrome: The web browser went unhacked at PWN2OWN for the third consecutive year. And when it was discovered that Chrome’s webkit is the same that was used for the latest Blackberry hack, Google almost immediately released an update that fixes the Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame for IE. They’ve been consistently reliable when it comes to your web privacy, as evidenced by some of the privacy goodies in Google Chrome 10. - The Sandbox has been extended to include the integrated Flash player. - Chrome Sync, which shares your auto fill, browsing history, passwords, etc. across browsers, can now be encrypted with a passcode. - The web browser has updated malware reporting. - Out-of-date versions of plugins are automatically disabled to prevent hacking. Firefox 4 Firefox 4 joined Google Chrome for the first time as one of the survivors of PWN2OWN. The browser adds a host of features – represented by a smattering of acronyms – that provide a level of protection never been seen before in Firefox. To wit: - HSTS: In simple terms, Firefox will turn all the HTTP sites you designate to HTTPS. Mozilla discovered that the easiest way to get someone’s information was through non-encrypted login pages. This way, you can opt into turning that page into an HTTPS page even if the company has neglected to do so. - CSP: Firefox will now block any malicious scripts from running. (You can whitelist certain pages and companies.) - Visited links change to a different color, which is knowledge a hacker can use to see which companies and services you use. While the links will stay the

Not to be left out of the browser wars, Internet Explorer is launching their latest version of their web browser today at 2 pm ET. The release candidate can be found here – or you could just wait a few hours. PC World got a sneak peek at SXSW: It seems that the focus of IE9 is to make sure the browser takes a back seat to the content, so that bar of icons and tools on top have shrunk down to a small strip with just the address bar which doubles as a Bing search bar. Reducing the browser is a move that both Firefox and Chrome have followed Safari in doing, so it’s about time for Internet Explorer to follow suit. The bottom of the screen is an electronic pin board of sorts. If you like a web page, you can drag the content to the bottom and “pin” it there for easier access. The pinned pages also update with new content. They’ll blink if a download is completed, and a number will appear over the icon to tell you how many new emails or tweet you have. When you scroll over the pins it will show you a list of different parts within the website so you can navigate it faster. Another new feature includes accelerated graphics rendering. The site supposedly works in HTML 5 – which makes it easier for developers since they only have to design one site for mobile, Mac and PC browsers with this language – but Niels Leenheer’s HTML 5 test, which Mozilla Firefox uses, says otherwise. It gives IE 9 a 130 out of a possible 400. Microsoft claims that the site works best with the HTML 5 that is almost fully developed since the full version (which Leenheer supposedly tests) will only be finalized in 2014.
With new versions scheduled to be released for these two popular web browsers, many of us are rethinking where our loyalties lie. Should we go with the Google Chrome (Beta) or Mozilla Firefox 4.0? Is it worth the upgrade, or is it time to try something new? Here’s a list of the new and upgraded features to make your decision easier. Release Date: Google Chrome (Beta): Beta version available; Those using Chrome will be updated soon. Mozilla Firefox 4.0: Web and mobile browser expected mid-to-late March. Point Goes To: Chrome. It’s available now, and we all know what happens with tentative dates. Speed: Google Chrome (Beta): The new browser is 66 percent faster than the previous version using the V8 Benchmark Suite tests. Mozilla Firefox 4.0: Firefox counters with a six times faster browser than their previous iteration, meaning a 6oo percent faster speed using the V8 Benchmark Suite tests. Point Goes To: Firefox. Just look at the stats. User Interface: Google Chrome (Beta): The browser has been revamped to help the user customize their experience and get to what they need faster. This means: - The settings interface is a tab in the browser. This makes it look cleaner. - A search box so you can quickly find whatever you’re trying to fix/manage. Finally, you can search for your settings instead of clicking through and reading through each option. - Each option page has a URL so you can help others find the same setting. Mozilla Firefox 4.0: Lots of new stuff here including: - Top navigation buttons have disappeared, making it look very similar to Chrome. Tabs are right on top now. Bookmarks are now a button on the top right of the page. - Introducing App Tabs: If you’re someone who uses the same websites (such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.), you might want to try this option. You have the option to make a frequently used website an app tab, which appears as a small square to the left of your normal tabs. The app tabs light up when there is updated content.
