Intel has joined the club of tech companies who want to revolutionize television, but unsurprisingly it’s meeting some resistance in Hollywood. According to Forbes, Intel wants to launch an Internet-based TV service that would do away with the typical big bundle of channels that you get with cable or satellite TV. Instead, subscribers would have an à la carte selection of only the channels they actually want, streaming to any device with an Internet connection. A beta could roll out as early as March, the report claims. However, a later story by the Wall Street Journal dumps some cold water on Forbes‘ report, saying that content providers aren’t all eager to disrupt the lucrative cable and satellite TV business. Hollywood companies would want a lot more money than they get through those services, and it’s not clear how many content deals Intel has landed so far. The Journal described launch timing as “uncertain,” citing one source who guessed at a mid-2013 launch, and another who said it could happen by the fourth quarter of this year. Intel is reportedly trying to solve an age-old gripe with cable TV: With the typical subscription, companies like Viacom and Disney earn anywhere from a few cents to several dollars per subscriber for each channel they offer, regardless of whether you watch them or not. In a way, this system works, because popular channels help to buoy more obscure stuff. But if you’re not someone who watches, say, a lot of sports, you’re probably getting ripped off, as The Atlantic recently noted. Paying by the channel could be a better alternative than relying on a patchwork of web video services like Netflix and Hulu. Still, if you follow the tech industry, this all might seem familiar, and not in a good way. Apple has also reportedly tried to break up the bundled cable business, but seems to face rejection at every turn from an industry that would rather not rock the boat. It’s hard to see exactly why Intel would be more successful. Forbes‘ report says Intel is

MacBook Air style with a more PC-like pricetag: That’s the promise of Acer’s new S3 ultrabook. At $900, it beats Apple’s lowest-priced 13-inch MacBook Air by a full $400 while measuring up almost identically in weight and thickness. So what’s the catch? No catch! Okay, there’s a catch. But first, the specs! Dual-core Intel Core i5 processor running at 1.6GHz 4GB of memory 320GB hard drive for file storage, plus a second 20GB solid state drive that houses the operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium) and maintains the computer’s state for resuming from standby in less than two seconds Card reader, two USB ports, HDMI output Just over half an inch thick, just under three pounds, measures about 12.5 inches wide and about 8.5 inches long. So what do you get for $900? It’s fast. It’s very portable. The keyboard’s pretty good. The resume-from-standby time is amazing, and it looks great. (MORE: Eight New Tablets and Ultrabooks You Should Know About) What’s missing? Battery life leaves a bit to be desired: You’ll get around four hours if you’re really pushing it, maybe four and a half if you’re moseying. Gaming? Meh. Serious gaming? No! The screen doesn’t get all that bright, either. And if you’re comparing this to a MacBook Air, you also lose the backlit keyboard and the Acer’s screen resolution is 1366×768 versus 1440×900 with the MacBook Air. All things considered, the Acer S3 makes a good choice for a 13-inch notebook thanks in large part to its form factor and its nimble performance. The biggest strike against it is its somewhat lackluster battery life. Other than that, you’re getting a lot for well shy of a grand. Want more videos like this?
Heard about any good hacks lately? It’s high time we went over some password rules: 1. The longer the better. Six characters? No. Eight? Meh. Twelve? Yes. 2. Use a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. 3. Create a different password for each site. It’s a total pain, I know, but consider one of the following methods: Luigi Montanez’s “password recipe” for websites - Take the number of letters in the site name, times the number of letters in the part after the dot. Google.com = 6 x 3, for instance. - Choose a phrase you can remember—like “All’s well that ends well”—and grab the first letter of each word in that phrase: awtew. - Take the site name, strip out the vowels, then capitalize: GGL. - Use the number of letters after the dot again: 3. Final password: 18awtewGGL3. Yahoo.com would be: 15awtewYH2, for instance. or… Incorporate cryptic language from a device you always have with you As an example, use your cell phone’s serial number, then add a symbol like an exclamation point, then add the site’s name onto the end—capitalized but minus the vowels. If I use the model number of my phone’s battery, for instance, which is easily found by removing the back plate, I get gb/t18287. So my Best Buy password would be gb/t18287!BSTBY—pretty strong, huh? The best part is that since you change phones every so often, it’d force you to change your password as well. The bad part is that if someone gets ahold of one of these passwords, it’s not impossible to figure out the pattern. Also, don’t lose your phone. Password management services You can also use password management services like 1Password or LastPass. That may be the path of least resistance, although some of these services are susceptible to security issues themselves. More Techland password tips: Who ARE These People?
The iPad makes a nice digital cookbook, huh? But using it around messy ingredients can get downright ugly and trying to use the touchscreen when your hands are covered in whatever it is that people who know how to cook have their hands covered in is a bad, bad idea.
