Ever since Nokia debuted its first Windows Phone, the Lumia 800, the company has eschewed slim designs and opted for distinct, if clunkier, constructions. That’s all about to change with the Lumia 925. Rather than use a solid slab of polycarbonate, as it has with previous flagship phones, Nokia wrapped the edges of the Lumia 925 in aluminum. Polycarbonate — a durable form of plastic — still makes an appearance on the phone’s back panel. Possibly as a result of the new materials, the Lumia 925 is much thinner and lighter than its predecessors, weighing 4.9 ounces and measuring 3.3 inches thick. Nokia’s Lumia 920, by comparison, weighs 6.5 ounces and runs 0.42 inches thick. Nokia has managed to shave all that bulk without compromising tech specs. Compared to the Lumia 920, the 925 has the same 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, an 8.7-megapixel camera and a 2,000 mAh battery. It also has the same 4.5-inch screen size and 1280-by-768 resolution as the Lumia 920, but with AMOLED display technology instead of LCD, promising deeper blacks. The only thing missing is built-in wireless charging. Users will have to strap on a separate case to get that feature. With so many of the same specs as the Lumia 920, the focus with the Lumia 925 was clearly on improving the design of the phone. (The phone has a few extra software features for the camera as well, such as a Smart Camera mode that takes 10 shots at once and can weave together the best elements from each photo.) The Lumia 925 even fares well against other high-end smartphones, as Gizmodo’s detailed spec comparison points out. It’s thinner than the HTC One, BlackBerry Z10 and Nexus 4; it’s also lighter than the HTC One, and it’s within an ounce of the Z10 and the Nexus 4. Now, you might argue that thinness and lightness don’t matter. There’s something to be said for a high-end phone with heft. But thin and light is what sells. Anecdotally, it’s

Nokia and Verizon Wireless began teasing the Lumia 928 earlier this week, but now it’s official. The flagship Windows Phone will launch on May 16 for $100, counting a $50 mail-in rebate. As expected, the Nokia Lumia 928 is similar to the Lumia 920 that launched on AT&T late last year. Both phones have 4.5-inch, 1280-by-768 resolution displays, 1.5 GHz dual core processors, 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, wireless charging and the ability to use the touch screen through gloved fingers. They also both have Nokia’s 8.7-megapixel PureView camera, which offers solid low-light performance and image stabilization. So what’s different? Verizon’s Lumia 928 is a little bit narrower, thinner and lighter than AT&T’s Lumia 920, but also it’s slightly taller. The look of Verizon’s phone is more traditional, with a tapered backside and only black or white color options, whereas AT&T’s model has five color choices and rounded edges. Although this isn’t the first high-end Windows Phone 8 handset Verizon has carried–that distinction goes to HTC’s Windows Phone 8X–the Lumia 928 does have the advantage of Nokia HERE Maps. Nokia’s mapping service is more useful than Microsoft’s built in software, because it can provide live turn-by-turn directions. (Correction: Since February, Nokia’s HERE Maps app has been available for all Windows Phone 8 devices, and its turn-by-turn navigation app is available in beta.) Nokia has some other unique software features as well, such as the Internet radio service Nokia Music and City Lens, which lets you look through the phone’s camera for nearby points of interest. Windows Phone fans who aren’t on Verizon should sit tight; Nokia is holding a press event in London next week, where the company may announce its first aluminum-clad Windows Phone.

Are tech pundits lending a hand in crushing Windows Phone 8? PCMag’s Sascha Segan thinks so. Segan argues that Windows Phone 8 is a solid mobile operating system that has a chance to compete with the iPhone and Android. The problem, in Segan’s view, is that pundits are all too eager to point out Windows Phone 8 ‘s app deficiency compared to other platforms, and that their negativity is killing the zeitgeist and scaring developers away: Windows Phone has a lot going for it. For people who like Xbox, for people who use Microsoft office software, for people whose friends don’t all have iPhones or even just for people who like the cool interface of live tiles. Before we bury it, let’s give the darn thing a chance. I agree with a lot of Segan’s points, including the idea that the iPhone-Android duopoly could use fresh competition. I also agree that the Windows Phone app situation isn’t as bad as some pundits make it out to be. Many of my essentials are present, including Twitter, ESPN ScoreCenter and TripIt. Third-party alternatives fill the void for many other services, like YouTube and Pocket. The free mobile version of Microsoft Office is a huge perk that no other platform has. And like Segan, I couldn’t care less about LetterPress. Still, after two years of iteration by Microsoft, I can’t get into Windows Phone, and the paucity of apps–real or perceived–has nothing to do with it. My troubles come down to the little things that Windows Phone 8 doesn’t do as well as other platforms, the very things I rely on from a mobile device. Here are some examples: GPS navigation is still a mess. To get directions on an iPhone or Android phone, all you have to do is hold down a button and say “directions to,” or “navigate to,” followed by the place you want to go. No such equivalent exists on Windows Phone. The closest alternative is to hold down the home button, then say where you want to go, then

After nearly six months of build-up, the big rebirth of Windows Phone is at hand. Microsoft has been trying to make a dent in the smartphone market for more than two years, with little success. This time around, the company is hoping that better hardware, broader wireless carrier support and an emphasis on personalized experiences will lead to wider adoption. But of course, none of that’s possible without the actual phones. On Friday, the first Windows Phone 8 handsets from Nokia and HTC will launch on AT&T. Soon after, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless will launch their own handsets. For more details on Windows Phone 8, check out my colleague Harry McCracken’s overview. Below, I’ll go over the phones and where to find them. The Phones Nokia’s Lumia 920 is an AT&T exclusive, with an emphasis on photography and special apps, such as Nokia Drive for navigation and Nokia Music for ad-free curated Internet radio. Specs include a 4.5-inch, 1280-by-768 resolution display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 32 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM and an 8.7-megapixel rear camera with low-light enhancements and image stabilization. Nokia also has a mid-range phone, called the Lumia 820. It has a 4.3-inch, 800-by-480 resolution display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, a MicroSD slot, an 8-megapixel camera and a VGA front-facing camera. The 820 will be available on AT&T, but T-Mobile will sell the Lumia 810, and Verizon will sell the Lumia 822, which have different designs and no wireless charging capabilities, but the same specs. (Correction: These variants do support wireless charging, just like the 820.) HTC’s Windows Phone 8X is another high-end handset with a 720p display and a slimmer, lighter design than the Lumia 920. Specs include a 4.3-inch, 1280-by-720 resolution display, a 1.5 dual-core GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1 GB RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. Verizon’s version has wireless charging as well. Finally there’s the Samsung ATIV S, which is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S III

The tech world always needs a good rumor to obsess over, and lately it’s been the idea of a Windows Phone made by Microsoft. A report from the Wall Street Journal claims that Microsoft is testing its own smartphone right now, in conjunction with component suppliers in Asia. In typical Journal fashion, the report cites “people familiar with the situation,” and is light on details. One source said the phone’s display will measure between four and five inches, which is just slightly more specific than saying “it will be a phone.” Whether the Microsoft Windows Phone will actually go into mass production remains uncertain. Other rumors have come before this one. The Verge has reported that Microsoft is considering its own phone as a “Plan B.” Boy Genius Report and WPCentral have also offered some scuttlebutt. (MORE: Windows Phone 8: This Time for Sure?) These reports give off a whiff of smoke from a probable fire, but perhaps the most solid hint of all comes from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, in a letter to company shareholders that laid out the company’s future: There will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes, as we have chosen to do with Xbox and the recently announced Microsoft Surface. In all our work with partners and on our own devices, we will focus relentlessly on delivering delightful, seamless experiences across hardware, software and services. It’s not crazy to think that Microsoft would build a phone to go along with its tablets and game console, if the situation called for it. Rumor has it that Microsoft only decided to sell the Surface after seeing what PC makers were doing. That makes sense; Surface, with its built-in kickstand and clever keyboard covers, is quite different from all the other Windows 8 and Windows RT hybrids on the market now. Dockable tablets and swiveling Ultrabooks have their own perks, but they’re not the same as the Surface, whose laptop-like elements practically disappear when you don’t need them. It executes Microsoft’s vision for a “no compromises” tablet in a way that
