Nokia hasn’t officially announced its Lumia 928 smartphone yet, but that hasn’t stopped the company from advertising the Verizon-bound flagship device. Engadget reports that the not-so-mysterious Windows Phone has popped up on a billboard (location unclear) and in a Vanity Fair magazine advertisement. Both ads focus on the Lumia 928′s photography features. Nokia’s “PureView” camera technology boosts low-light performance, while optical image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics help provide a clear picture. It sounds a lot like the Lumia 920 that AT&T sells, except this version could be a Verizon Wireless exclusive in the United States. The two phones certainly look similar, but a side-by-side comparison (pictured below) suggests that Nokia has trimmed some of the bezel. Rumors have suggested that the Lumia 928 will have the same 4.5-inch screen size as the 920, but a more compact design would be a welcome change. Nokia has since posted its own teaser online, but with the Verizon logos and camera details conveniently scrubbed away. Nokia’s having a press event on May 14 in London, where the company may reveal details on an international version. As for Verizon, the carrier is holding its own press event on May 22, and an official announcement of the Lumia 928 seems like a given.
How do you get people interested in an underdog mobile platform? In a new ad spotlighting the Lumia 920 Windows Phone — which I first saw as part of Tom Warren’s article over at The Verge — Microsoft tries to do it by making viewers laugh, and making fun of the competition. It’s a funny spot, albeit one which feels awfully close in style to Samsung’s Apple-mocking ads. (I’m not sure if that’s intentional or not.) And it doesn’t convey any virtues of Nokia’s Lumia 920 in particular or Windows Phone in general except that the Lumia looks nice, comes in pretty colors and is beloved by Engadget readers. If commercials of this sort were the only means by which Microsoft were trying to get phone shoppers interested in Windows Phone handsets, I’d be skeptical. For one thing, doesn’t the company need to address prospective customers who currently use an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy model? Will they find the ad to be a laff riot or an insult to their intelligence? After all, Windows Phone’s challenge isn’t that the iPhone and Galaxy phones are bad. The problem is that they’re good — so good that it’s tough to interest people in a non-iOS, non-Android platform. Even one as nicely done as Windows Phone, running on phones as nice as the Lumia 920. Then again, Microsoft is still struggling to get people to pay attention to Windows Phone at all, and maybe this approach will work as a supplement to more straightforward communications about Windows Phone’s virtues. (I recently went to a movie which was preceded by a more prosaic, informational Windows Phone ad starring Ben Rudolph, Microsoft’s Ben the PC Guy.) I do have one other question: Now that we have Samsung ads characterizing iPhone users as airheads, and Microsoft ads saying that both iPhone and Galaxy fans are doofuses, I wonder how long it’ll be until BlackBerry enters the no-you’re-the-moron fray?

Whether you prefer the iPhone, Android, Windows Phone or BlackBerry, it’s hard to deny that Apple‘s phones are the best-looking of the bunch. For years, it seemed like other phone makers weren’t even trying to compete on design. While competitors kept up with the iPhone in thinness and lightness, they relied almost exclusively on plastic, making their phones feel creaky and cheap. Lately, phone makers besides Apple have been coming around to the idea of premium designs. The HTC One is a gorgeous phone encased in a single slab of aluminum, and Nokia is reportedly working on an aluminum-clad Windows Phone. Although Samsung is using plastic for the Galaxy S 4, the company is rumored to be using metal for the next Galaxy Note. Aluminum isn’t the only material phone makers are turning to, either; Sony’s Xperia Z and Google’s Nexus 4 have glass panels on both the front and back of the phones — a nod, perhaps, to Apple’s iPhone 4 and 4S. What took Apple’s rivals so long? I asked Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities with solid supply chain sources, to shed some light on the matter. He shared a couple theories for why phone makers are suddenly interested in aluminum, in particular: Aluminum is now cheaper and easier to implement thanks to Apple itself, and its extensive use of the material in products like the iPhone 5 and iPad. “Apple is the first one to boost the demand for metal casing in the consumer electronics market and it drives the related suppliers of aluminum casing (e.g. equipment providers, casing makers) to invest more on capacity and technology,” Kuo wrote in an e-mail. High-end phones are facing tougher competition from cheaper ones, and using aluminum is one way for smartphone makers to differentiate their more expensive products. That makes sense to me; the difference between a high-end phone and a cheaper product isn’t as significant as it used to be, leading to the perception that the latest and greatest smartphones are kind of boring. If you’re

As phone makers push screen sizes ever-larger, it seems like just a matter of time before Windows Phone gets in on the phablet craze. Citing unnamed sources, Financial Times reports that Nokia is working on one such gargantuan phone. Details are scarce, but the report claims that Nokia’s phablet will outshine Samsung’s Galaxy Note in tech specs and will be the “most innovative” product in Nokia’s 2013 lineup. It’s just a rumor, and even if it’s true, Nokia’s plans could always change. But at this point, it seems pretty likely that some phone makers will give phablets a shot on the Windows Phone platform. (Phablets, if you’re not hip to the silly tech jargon, generally refers to phones with displays larger than five inches, but smaller than seven inches.) Why has it taken so long? Until about a year ago, it wasn’t clear whether people actually wanted oversized phones. But with Samsung selling well over 5 million Galaxy Note II handsets–at a faster rate than the original Note–the phablet is clearly here to stay. Other companies, like LG and Huawai, have since debuted their own gigantic phones. The problem with Windows Phone 8 is that it doesn’t support screen resolutions above 720p, and at this point phone makers would much rather use 1080p displays and market them as high-end handsets. That’s why HTC reportedly scrapped its plans for a Windows Phone phablet late last year. Limits on processing power may have also played a role, as current Windows Phones may only use dual-core chips. But with the next version of Windows Phone, Microsoft reportedly will support 1080p, and will specifically allow phones with five- to six-inch displays, according to both ZDNet and The Verge. It’s possible that the software will even adjust to these larger devices by showing an extra column of Live Tiles on the home screen. Support for quad-core processors may be added as well. In other words, the stage is set for jumbo Windows Phones. The challenge for Nokia, or for Microsoft, will be to offer software features

If smartwatches become the next big thing in tech, Microsoft apparently doesn’t want to be left out. Citing supply-chain executives, the Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft is working on designs for a touch-enabled watch. Microsoft reportedly asked suppliers in Asia to ship components for a potential device earlier this year. Still, it’s unclear if Microsoft will actually go ahead with the product. In lieu of any hard details, all we can do is think about the advantages Microsoft would have, and the hurdles it would face, if it wants to bring a smartwatch to market. Here are some strengths that come to mind, based on what we already know about Windows Phone: Modern Style Is Watch-Friendly The tile-based design of Windows Phone and Windows 8 seems tailor-made for a smartwatch. Users could set up a Live Tile or two that would show weather, time or other basic information. More tiles could fill the screen as notifications roll in. Some Third-Party Apps Are Ready Already One of the neatest features of Windows Phone is the way it lets you control third-party apps by voice. For instance, you can ask your tip-calculator app to crunch some numbers, or tell the Toggle app to control various phone settings. These types of commands would translate beautifully to a smartwatch, where touchscreen controls aren’t as feasible. Neither iOS nor Android support this level of voice commands for third-party apps, so Microsoft is ahead of the pack. No Fragmentation Here Compared with Google’s Android, Microsoft has tighter control over the software that goes onto Windows Phones. That means the company could guarantee a consistent smartwatch experience, whether your Windows Phone was made by HTC, Samsung or Nokia. You can’t say the same for Android, especially considering Samsung has plans to build its own smartwatch. Digital-Wallet Building Blocks Although adoption is slow-going, Microsoft’s Wallet for Windows Phone provides a way to pay with credit or debit by tapping your phone, and to store loyalty cards that can be scanned by bar code. This type of functionality

Are tech pundits lending a hand in crushing Windows Phone 8? PCMag’s Sascha Segan thinks so. Segan argues that Windows Phone 8 is a solid mobile operating system that has a chance to compete with the iPhone and Android. The problem, in Segan’s view, is that pundits are all too eager to point out Windows Phone 8 ‘s app deficiency compared to other platforms, and that their negativity is killing the zeitgeist and scaring developers away: Windows Phone has a lot going for it. For people who like Xbox, for people who use Microsoft office software, for people whose friends don’t all have iPhones or even just for people who like the cool interface of live tiles. Before we bury it, let’s give the darn thing a chance. I agree with a lot of Segan’s points, including the idea that the iPhone-Android duopoly could use fresh competition. I also agree that the Windows Phone app situation isn’t as bad as some pundits make it out to be. Many of my essentials are present, including Twitter, ESPN ScoreCenter and TripIt. Third-party alternatives fill the void for many other services, like YouTube and Pocket. The free mobile version of Microsoft Office is a huge perk that no other platform has. And like Segan, I couldn’t care less about LetterPress. Still, after two years of iteration by Microsoft, I can’t get into Windows Phone, and the paucity of apps–real or perceived–has nothing to do with it. My troubles come down to the little things that Windows Phone 8 doesn’t do as well as other platforms, the very things I rely on from a mobile device. Here are some examples: GPS navigation is still a mess. To get directions on an iPhone or Android phone, all you have to do is hold down a button and say “directions to,” or “navigate to,” followed by the place you want to go. No such equivalent exists on Windows Phone. The closest alternative is to hold down the home button, then say where you want to go, then

After nearly six months of build-up, the big rebirth of Windows Phone is at hand. Microsoft has been trying to make a dent in the smartphone market for more than two years, with little success. This time around, the company is hoping that better hardware, broader wireless carrier support and an emphasis on personalized experiences will lead to wider adoption. But of course, none of that’s possible without the actual phones. On Friday, the first Windows Phone 8 handsets from Nokia and HTC will launch on AT&T. Soon after, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless will launch their own handsets. For more details on Windows Phone 8, check out my colleague Harry McCracken’s overview. Below, I’ll go over the phones and where to find them. The Phones Nokia’s Lumia 920 is an AT&T exclusive, with an emphasis on photography and special apps, such as Nokia Drive for navigation and Nokia Music for ad-free curated Internet radio. Specs include a 4.5-inch, 1280-by-768 resolution display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 32 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM and an 8.7-megapixel rear camera with low-light enhancements and image stabilization. Nokia also has a mid-range phone, called the Lumia 820. It has a 4.3-inch, 800-by-480 resolution display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, a MicroSD slot, an 8-megapixel camera and a VGA front-facing camera. The 820 will be available on AT&T, but T-Mobile will sell the Lumia 810, and Verizon will sell the Lumia 822, which have different designs and no wireless charging capabilities, but the same specs. (Correction: These variants do support wireless charging, just like the 820.) HTC’s Windows Phone 8X is another high-end handset with a 720p display and a slimmer, lighter design than the Lumia 920. Specs include a 4.3-inch, 1280-by-720 resolution display, a 1.5 dual-core GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1 GB RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. Verizon’s version has wireless charging as well. Finally there’s the Samsung ATIV S, which is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S III

The tech world always needs a good rumor to obsess over, and lately it’s been the idea of a Windows Phone made by Microsoft. A report from the Wall Street Journal claims that Microsoft is testing its own smartphone right now, in conjunction with component suppliers in Asia. In typical Journal fashion, the report cites “people familiar with the situation,” and is light on details. One source said the phone’s display will measure between four and five inches, which is just slightly more specific than saying “it will be a phone.” Whether the Microsoft Windows Phone will actually go into mass production remains uncertain. Other rumors have come before this one. The Verge has reported that Microsoft is considering its own phone as a “Plan B.” Boy Genius Report and WPCentral have also offered some scuttlebutt. (MORE: Windows Phone 8: This Time for Sure?) These reports give off a whiff of smoke from a probable fire, but perhaps the most solid hint of all comes from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, in a letter to company shareholders that laid out the company’s future: There will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes, as we have chosen to do with Xbox and the recently announced Microsoft Surface. In all our work with partners and on our own devices, we will focus relentlessly on delivering delightful, seamless experiences across hardware, software and services. It’s not crazy to think that Microsoft would build a phone to go along with its tablets and game console, if the situation called for it. Rumor has it that Microsoft only decided to sell the Surface after seeing what PC makers were doing. That makes sense; Surface, with its built-in kickstand and clever keyboard covers, is quite different from all the other Windows 8 and Windows RT hybrids on the market now. Dockable tablets and swiveling Ultrabooks have their own perks, but they’re not the same as the Surface, whose laptop-like elements practically disappear when you don’t need them. It executes Microsoft’s vision for a “no compromises” tablet in a way that

Nokia's Lumia 900 has the makings of the ultimate tech comeback story: A once-proud mobile phone maker makes a desperate pact with Microsoft, which despite its own juggernaut status in the PC market is similarly downtrodden when it comes to smartphones. The pair find a willing wireless carrier in AT&T, and together, they spend a fortune--$100 million, by one estimate--to market what is supposed to be the first Windows Phone in the United States worth caring about.

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango is an impressive operating system. Nokia makes nifty hardware. So despite Windows Phone's tiny market share to date and Nokia's recent woes, I want to be optimistic about the Finnish phone maker's return to the U.S. market with slick new Windows Phone-powered handsets.
