Women in Combat Roles: Who Knew Video Games Were So Progressive?

When the Pentagon announced this week that the U.S. military will allow women to fight on the front lines within a few years, I was taken aback – but not because I have any problem with the policy change. To be honest, I just didn’t realize the military had a rule against women in combat roles to begin with. It’s probably because I spend too much time soaking up technology news, and not enough time reading about everything else. But maybe some of my dumbfoundedness comes from the fact that I play video games. In the virtual warzones of my favorite hobby, it’s totally normal for men and women to fight alongside one another. One of my favorite games of 2012 was XCom: Enemy Unknown, in which you command a small squad of super soldiers in a fight against alien invaders. The rank and file of your paramilitary group hail from both sexes, and on the battlefield, there’s no tactical difference between them. A female soldier can aim a sniper rifle or launch a rocket just as capably as any male squaddie. She’s entitled to the same promotions as well, and can rise through the ranks just as quickly. XCom is somewhat of an ideal example, but it’s not the only one. In the Mass Effect series, your protagonist can be male or female, and so can the characters who head into battle with you. In Halo 4, your Spartan soldier can be either gender with exactly the same abilities. Gears of War 3 added female squad members to the mix, where previous games had relegated them to support roles away from the action. The funny thing is that video games aren’t known for treating women fairly. A lot of times, women serve primarily as eye candy, or damsels in distress, or just glorified secretaries for men doing the real work. That’s assuming there are any women in the game at all. (And of course, not all war games include women. The Call of Duty series, for instance, is almost

With another E3 in the books, Peter and I took some time to compile a list of what surprised us the most at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. This year’s show boasted over 100 exhibitors and many more hundreds of titles to see and play, all split between the South and West halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center. After three days of non-stop walking, button-pressing and arm-waving, here are our 10 “Best of E3” picks for 2010. Be on the lookout next week for what made us go “meh” at E3; you might be surprised by our picks.
Announced a few months ago, 2K’s reimagining of the classic PC strategy game changes genres to become a first-person shooter. But the 2K Marin dev studio insists there’ll still be strategy involved. The game takes its title from an organization gathering disparate pieces of info regarding a secret alien invasion. The demo we saw started in aircraft hangar, the base of XCOM. You’ll play as William Carter, who discovered an alien artifact that led to forming of XCOM. Carter leads XCOM and in tat role, players will decide which missions to take on and which to reject. A tour around the base showed off Illyrium, an alien substance that powers the retro-futuristic tech and weapons the agents use to fight the aliens. The research you do in the field generates new equipment and weapons, so that’s another way the missions you choose can affect progression in the game. Your techician Mal is like a greaser, and you’ll get items like a Blobotov from him, which uses weaponized alien mass against them. The game has very limited ammo so you’ll need to be careful to conserve it in battle. The mission we saw had Carter investigating a emergency call in a suburban neighborhood. He got there get there to find a deserted street and followed a scream to a backyard with a trail of goo, with a dead body smothered in the gelatinous mess. Then we saw the first glimpse of the games’ extraterrestrials. The Blobs are amorphous tentacled creatures that crawl up walls and ceilings. They’ve got a black exterior that reveal a white central mass when you shoot ‘em up. If you don’t take them out completely, the black jello reforms around the white nugget and keeps on attacking. In short, they’re hella creepy. Carter pulled out a sci-fi energy weapon and dispatched the rest of the blobs after a while. You’ll be manage a team of agents in the field and as the mission continued, it turned in a slaughter in a mid-century modern split-level ranch.
Just after midnight, 2K announced that the folks behind BioShock 2, 2K Marin, are currently developing a “re-imagining” of the storied XCOM franchise. For those that don’t remember, the XCOM franchise was a hit in the mid to late 90s and 2K acquired the rights from Atari in 2005. When it was announced that Ken Levine and the crew at Irrational (formerly 2K Boston) were not tied to BioShock 2, the Internets freaked out and assumed they were behind the XCOM reboot. Clearly not the case. 2K promises a “unique first-person shooter experience” combined with the “suspense-filled narrative” and puppies. Okay, maybe not puppies. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world. No word on release date, but it will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC.
