Silent Running

Attached to the long, slender, prototypical spaceship design are those giant domes, housing the last of Earth’s vegetation. They are additions to the hull that look woefully out of place in the outer reaches of space, and that’s by design. This is a Noah’s Ark of sorts, for the last remaining vestiges of a green Earth, and this ship has been built with something larger than man at stake. While most spaceships put the focus on how the bridge, engineering and personnel quarters would look, here’s a ship that’s more about the cargo than the pilots, less interested in exploring the outer limits than in preserving the ailing artifacts of a damaged home base. It’s a lofty sentiment, with a design to match.

Trying to Be Optimistic About a Google Music-Streaming System

The Wall Street Journal’s Amir Efrati and Ethan Smith are reporting that Google is working on a consumer-electronics system designed to stream music–and, eventually, maybe video and other media–around the home. Their story doesn’t have much in the way of detail, but does say that Google’s brainchild might be akin to a lower-cost version of Sonos’s excellent-but-pricey music-streaming products. Absent more details, there are several ways to respond to this sketchy bit of news.
