DJ Hero was last year’s biggest surprise success in the music game genre. It had a lot going against it: it was largely a single-player affair, the game offered no vocal component and its controller were new and intimidating. Despite all of that, and a very high price tag, DJ Hero apparently sold enough units to warrant a sequel.
This time around, Activision and developer FreeStyle Games promise to create a more multiplayer-friendly experience. First up, DJ Hero 2 will support two turntables for head-to-head DJ battles. And then, for those who want to karaoke over the game’s thumping beats, you can use the included microphone to get your Gaga on.
Speaking of Her Highness, she’ll be featured on one of the 70 all-new tracks on the disc, including mixes with The Chemical Brothers, Kanye West, Metallica, Rihanna and more. DJH2 will also come in three different varieties: the Party Bundle with two turntable controllers and a mic, a Turntable Bundle with one fake record-player and just the disc itself. To get players hyped for the upcoming game, Activision’s releasing a new mix for DJ Hero owners that weaves together Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and Deadmau5”s “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff” as a free download today.
Will the impending Def Jam Rapstar/DJ Hero 2 battle become a video-game equivalent of old-school East Coast/West Coast beef?* We’ll see once E3 hits next week.
*Yes, I know I’m dating myself. No, I don’t care.
