Please, No: Fox Prepares To Rebirth Fantastic Four

It’s clearly time to retire any variation on the word “reborn” when it comes to geek marketing. I mean, at least DC Comics’ Green Lantern: Rebirth and The Flash: Rebirth were being semi-literal – the characters were dead, and now they’re not. And, I guess, Marvel Comics’ Captain America Reborn made sense because people thought he was dead…? But now, a day after I told you about Mortal Kombat‘s attempt at a Rebirth, comes the news that Fox is planning to officially title the next Fantastic Four movie Fantastic Four Reborn.

Firstly: No. Unless they spend the first ten minutes of the movie almost dying or something, I am not in favor of this melodramatic title for what’s, essentially, just repackaging the franchise with a new cast because, holy crap, Chris Evans has managed to price himself out of the budget, of all people (You can’t convince me that Ioan Gruffudd or Jessica Alba are too busy for a new one, and Michael Chiklis clearly loves the concept so much, he’s doing his own version for ABC this fall). Secondly, Fantastic Four Reborn isn’t even a good title. Thirdly, I get that, superhero movies, woo and everything, but unless Brad Bird or someone equally skillful is involved, I don’t think any amount of rebirthing will get people excited about a new Fantastic Four movie, reboot or no.

Expect Fantastic Four Reborn: Rebirth to be announced in 2013.
