Apple’s FaceTime Won’t Gobble Up Your Minutes

Turns out that Apple’s FaceTime video chat won’t eat away at your minutes or push you over the data cap brink.

Duh.

Am I the only one that understands how FaceTime works? It uses Wi-Fi so, you know, it wouldn’t eat away at your voice or data allotment. This straight from the horse’s mouth:

“The voice call ends as soon as the FaceTime call connects,” Apple tells us. “The FaceTime call is over Wi-Fi so does not use carrier minutes.”

Okay, fine, BI brings up a good point about Apple possibly keeping the voice call running in the background but that’s definitely not the case.

There’s some speculation that the next version of FaceTime could work over 3G but it’s highly unlikely given the current state of affairs in telecoms in this country. I doubt we’ll see an updated version that works over the cellular network until 4G/LTE networks are running full bore.
